Control copyright icon Hello Missclaireallen! Your additions to This Man... This Woman have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps described at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. See also Help:Translation#License requirements.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. DanCherek (talk) 14:11, 23 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for letting me know. My apologies - I didn’t realise I wasn’t allowed to copy a paragraph of text. I’ve just noticed though, that I’m now unable to make contributions to Wikipedia articles - is this permanent or just a temporary thing? And is it because of the above? What can I do to have this restriction lifted? Missclaireallen (talk) 16:48, 27 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that you've added some links pointing to disambiguation pages. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Stop

[edit]

Please stop changing the nationality of celebrities. You clearly do not understand what you are doing. Every change you made was wrong. WWGB (talk) 05:14, 18 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This is not true. And I understand exactly. As someone who works in the arts and is an expert on pop culture here in Australia, I can guarantee you some of these actors are either Australian or have dual nationalities. Americans are always trying to claim ours as their own the second they develop international renown. Can I kindly ask what makes you any more of an expert on pop culture than myself? Missclaireallen (talk) 05:18, 18 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Because I closely read the evidence in Wikipedia articles before making an edit. Saying Weaving, Gibson or Watts is Australian is patently false. None of them hold Australian citizenship. WWGB (talk)<

With the greatest respect, one doesn’t have to hold Australian citizenship to be considered an Australian. My parents have been here over 40 years and don’t hold citizenship but they are considered Australians in every regard except for that piece of paper. To not acknowledge fundamental links to Australia by actors who’ve grown up here from a very young age or learned and developed their craft here, is really unfortunate and quite misleading, There are many different definitions as to what makes someone a particular nationality. But in most cases I’ve left some of these actors’ nationalities as dual, rather than solely Australian, because of these nuances. To see Nicole Kidman for example, listed as solely American and not Australian or even Australian-American is preposterous. She herself would even be puzzled by that. Missclaireallen (talk) 05:33, 18 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The law us the law. It is the only consideration. If a migrant chooses not to become a citizen, as is their right, they can "feel" Australian, but they will never "be" Australian. Anyway, I have made my point, and will not accept any change to celebrity citizenship without appropriate legal status. Regards, WWGB (talk) 05:48, 18 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

That’s fine. Do whatever you like. So long as you know there’s not a person in the world who would consider Nicole Kidman an ‘American’ actress, including herself (check her ACTUAL bio)🤷‍♀️

Honestly, I’ve put in countless hours of work in my own free time to Wikipedia over the years (purely because pop culture is not only my area of expertise, but my passion), without a modicum of acknowledgement or thanks, and am only ever acknowledged (and rudely told ”STOP!), when considered ‘wrong’. Quite disheartening really. I’m sorry I bothered. Missclaireallen (talk) 06:01, 18 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

For what it's worth, the guideline is at this section of the Manual of Style for biographies. Also see these observations on Wikipedia behaviour, which talk about it being necessary to be indifferent to praise or blame to survive on Wikipedia ... but also say: "It's easier to burn down a dilapidated building than to fix it. The bigger the ego, the more pyromaniacal the impulse." Take your pick. Graham87 16:37, 19 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Graham87 - sorry I’m not sure whether your comment was towards myself or the other person in the thread? Is there somewhere else I can chat to you about this? Missclaireallen (talk) 16:59, 19 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The comment was towards yourself. Maybe I should've started a new section ... Graham87 07:33, 20 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah probably would’ve been better, as I really didn’t want to rehash this unpleasant conversation that left a sour taste. I’m usually a lot more amenable but I took exception to being spoken to by the user so rudely and abrasively for actually trying to do some helpful work. That was just poor form. As the message at the bottom of the talk box says: “Please be kind. Remember, we are all humans here” - which seems to be at odds with the subsequent underlying message of “if you can’t take criticism, maybe this isn’t the place for you”. I can indeed take criticism - but it’s the manner in which it’s delivered that makes or breaks an exchange. I choose to do Wiki edits as I have overwhelming PTSD, so this provides a way of me taking on a task that requires little chance if exacerbating that - kindness really does goes a long way. Missclaireallen (talk) 07:43, 20 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I would also iterate that It’s not entirely my onus of responsibility to be more resilient or thick skinned when someone is being abrasive. I’m not a troll or a vandal or a troublemaker. Just someone who’s trying to be helpful, so stern words are perhaps best directed elsewhere. Just really disappointed. Perhaps next time the user could offer advice or guidelines rather than unnecessarily yell at me in all caps. A good mentor should get a leader rather than a boss - less by example rather than boss around. I purely got my back up in defence at not being spoke to like a human. Hi Claire, thanks for your efforts there, but see my edit summaries ... Wikipedia is not a place for such detailed minutiae. A list of the most notable performances would be fine, but listing every single one is most certainly not. Graham87 16:29, 19 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Fostered content

[edit]

Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia, including your efforts to improve formatting.

Fostered content is a type of lint error that is triggered when some content is in a table structure but not where it can be visible. Specifically, content in tables can only be present in table cells, table headings, and captions. Content inserted elsewhere gets moved before the table. In some cases, this may be what the author intended, but it is still incorrect markup.

I just edited Andrew McKaige to fix three fostered content errors you created. Please look at the page history and see what I did, and fix the fostered content errors you recently introduced in Catherine Wilkin, Josh Lawson, Simone Buchanan and Helen Morse. Of course, it's possible that another editor will fix the errors before you do. —Anomalocaris (talk) 10:29, 22 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your help! Yes, there was definitely something strange that happened when I was editing yesterday, and couldn’t figure out how to fix it. I shall look into it. Missclaireallen (talk) 16:51, 22 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You edited Helen Morse without fixing the errors, which are caused by headings in heading markup right at the top of tables, not in a table cell. The problem would be fixed by moving the headings out of the tables. Simone Buchanan still needs fixing. Another editor fixed the other two. —Anomalocaris (talk) 21:00, 22 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ahhhi, I finally understand now.! Missclaireallen (talk) 22:41, 22 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

G'day

[edit]

Thanks for your additions to Steve Dodd. Your assistance there is greatly appreciated, but there are some matters that you should be aware of. Firstly, the article is a Featured Article, and needs to be updated and frankly, brought up to current FA standards, which is what I am trying to do. As an FA, only reliable sources may be used. Online pop culture sites aren't likely to be reliable, please see WP:IMDB for information on that one, but many online film listings are user-generated and therefore unreliable. Given the article is under renovation, I'd appreciate it if you discussed any major changes on the talk page. Please don't add anything unless you provide a citation to a reliable source. At FA, each significant film needs to be placed in context, and at least a sentence fragment describing what the film was about is needed. (I noticed that you deleted some of that, suggesting it was "superfluous guff"). Cheers, Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 05:18, 18 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, I appreciate your message. The tv show section I added was referencing the tv shows you added earlier in the article (which hadn't been added to the Filmography table), reiterating the exact same references you used. The remainder of the tv and film inclusions are directly from IMDB. I've previously been assured that IMDB edits are only accepted once reviewed and deemed accurate?
Regarding the 'superfluous guff', I was simply removing information about the films that I thought would be more relevant to the films' specific Wiki pages rather than the actor's page itself. But I totally understand the inclusion now that you've clarified that it's a Featured Article. Thanks for letting me know. Missclaireallen (talk) 05:27, 18 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Television films

Hi. This is just a quick note to say that television films should stay in the television table per WP:FILMOGRAPHY (a really great resource btw). - JuneGloom07 Talk 23:29, 26 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, thanks for your message. I took an existing synopsis and reworded it - is the amount I amended it not considered sufficient? Missclaireallen (talk) 14:54, 7 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I didn't notice that you'd paraphrased. Anyway, the answer is not really, there were still phrases and sentences that were almost or actually identical to the source (hence why I didn't notice). See Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing for more guidance on that. In my experience, you want to significantly modify both the vocabulary and sentence structure, as far as you are reasonably able. For example, the first sentence could say Wounded American marine Rebel, who is recovering in Australia, intends to desert; that would be an improvement over the more modest changes you had made. Invitation to participate in a research

[edit]

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

WMF Research Team

Ling-Hsueh Tang

[edit]

Hi

I see that you have been adding wikilinks to this actress, which is very helpful now that we know who she is, but as she seems to have been credited as Ling Cooper Tang almost exclusively since around 2016, I have created a redirect from that name. As it seems to be her current name, and the one that IMDb now uses, I intend to move the article over to that name tomorrow. There will still be a redirect from her old name, so the older links can stay, but if you could self-revert your recent changes where she has been credited with the new name, that would be helpful.

BTW, I see that you have a lot of DAB link notices on your page - these are automatically put there by a bot, so no need to respond, but if you want to reduce the number, there is a helpful gadget that works on web editing (not on the app though). If you want to set it up, have a look under Preferences at the top of the page, go to Gadgets, and tick the box next to "Display links to disambiguation pages in orange". It enables you to see DAB links as you edit on the web version. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 10:41, 10 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks so much 😊 Apologies - I had just re-reverted the previous one you changed before I got this message - would it be best to change the name on her actual profile to her updates name in that case? Missclaireallen (talk) 10:43, 10 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
