Good to see you back
[edit]Hi Mirlen. Just a quick note to say it's good to see you back. Hope you have time to read up on some of the talk page activity over at the Middle-earth WikiProject. As I said there, I won't be away completely, but will be relatively inactive over the next few weeks. Carcharoth 08:08, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

Tolkien character templates
[edit]Do you mean Template:Tolkienchar? Yes, I did create that, mostly by copying from the existing character template. If you want to experiment with this one, rather than the one in existing articles, please feel free! Let me know what you come up with. Carcharoth 22:19, 2 September 2006 (UTC)
- Looks good. Well, I say that, but I can only tell from the Maedhros box on my user page. Can you point me to some examples of the infobox being used so I can see this wrapping of text? It is only being used on my user page and on the Frodo Baggins page at the moment. Carcharoth 09:27, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
Maedhros
[edit]Thanks much for the info, I was also unaware of Wiki Middle Earth practices. I would love to get this article to GA, since a lot of the material is there... Judgesurreal777 17:14, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
Thanks
[edit]I wanted to take a minute and thank you for the welcome to the project. I love Tolkien and can assure you that I will be taking a large role in the days and weeks to come. I am a stay at home dad, so I have a lot of free time to edit and create. - KaoBear(talk) 23:10, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

The Lord of the Rings
[edit]Thanks for contacting me about my {{in-universe}} edit to Lord of the Rings. In fact, it wasn't just the tense in that article that prompted me to tag it, but the fact that so much of the article is actually told in-universe, at least according to my interpretation of WP:WAF. It seems to me that virtually all of the wording in the Back story and Synopsis sections is in terms of the plot, and therefore in-universe. IMHO, little if any effort is made to formulate these sections to out-of-universe using the techniques suggested at WP:WAF#Prose examples. Of course, I admit I may be applying a bit too much absolutism in being bold, and I look to more experienced WPedians such as yourself to reign me in. After you contacted me I reviewed some of the examples of good out/in-universe mixes given in the manual of style, and I have to admit that some of them (Captain Marvel (DC Comics) and Jabba the Hutt) seem to employ a fairly high ratio of in- to out- wording, although (again IMHO) none so high as in LOTR. In :any case, if you judge that my tagging is not merited, I am more than happy to incorporate this view, and revise my somewhat zealous approach in applying this template to middle-earth articles. JordanSamuels 23:56, 10 September 2006 (UTC)
- Your response to mine makes a lot of sense, and I appreciate your taking the time to clarify further the important facet of verb tense. For my part, I agree that a completely OOU approach is wrong for WP articles on Tolkien's works, and I'm not advocating all-OOU, just as (I believe) you are not advocating all-IU. Rather, I'm hoping that it's possible to respect both verb tense and a healthy balance between OOU and IU that follows both general WP WAF standards, and ME-specific considerations. Whather it is actually possible to strike this balance without resorting to heavy-handed and verbose transformations is still to be determined. I myself would want to continue this question in-depth, and so I've taken the liberty of transforming our user-talk discussion into a more general discussion on the standards discussion page. Assessment and participation in Wikiproject Middle-earth
[edit]Hey, sorry for not replying to your message sooner. I'm glad you appreciated the addition of the assessment aspect to the template. It was just something I did on a wiki-whim, no real purpose or intention behind it, aside from generally improving the quality of the Middle-earth articles. I'd love to participate more in the discussion of Tolkien-related articles, but I tend to be rather gnomish and bold and my attempts at serious article content improvement are usually directed more towards roller coaster articles, which tend to be in rather worse condition than the Middle-earth ones. Let me know if there are any Silmarillion stuff that needs work though, 'cause I probably have more expertise in that area than most. Best, Irongargoyle 22:22, 20 September 2006 (UTC)
Headings for Character articles
[edit]I think the plan has merit. You are right in saying it should be a tad less wordy then {{mecanon}}, and the location sounds good. Combining the twotemplates might be possible now that I think about it. Less space taken on the page and a single template. Sound interesting? - KaoBear(talk) 02:22, 21 September 2006 (UTC)
- It ddefinately gets to the point a great deal quicker. it looks cleaner and should be an easy device for readers to look at, take in the information from, and move on witht heir research. I like the idea about the cannon ending tag as well, it shouldn't always be placed mind you, but there are a few pages where plot details are a bare percentage of the actual article. (Faramir) and the rest is informative in other ways. Speaking od Faramir, JordanSamuels and I have been putting a great deal of work into it as of late to try and get it to FA status. Could you take a look at it and give us any ideas, criticisms, inspiration? - KaoBear(talk) 11:35, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit]Ah, Mirlen! Long time no see. :D How've you been? Thanks a bunch for your lovely birthday wishes and that scrumptious Viennese cake. ;) Cheers, Sango123 22:03, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
- School's keeping me busy too; the days of living on four to five hours of sleep seem to be approaching again. :\ As for Wikipedia, I managed to get three DYK entries in before real life got too hectic, but all of my recent edits have been hastily squeezed in between homework assignments— like this one! And for missing your birthday about a month ago (if I recall correctly), here's a bowl of ice cream to go with that cake. :) Cheers, Sango123 20:51, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit]I have signed up and no doubt I'll be putting my knowledge in the LOTR trilogy (novels and movies), The Silmarillion, The Hobbit, and Unfinished Tales to good use.
The invitation means a lot, as I've found a permanent home. Previously, it was stints at 400-series highways, video games, Canadian politicians, soccer, but maybe I've found my niche with Tolkien. GoldDragon 03:12, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

Gandalf
[edit]The difference is that when Feanor named Melkor Morgoth, that's what most of the Eldar actually called him thereafter. Wormtongue called Gandalf Lathspell once, and we never heard it again. He was also called "Grey Fool" by Denethor, "Old fool" by the Witch-king, "that dratted wizard" by hobbits who disapproved of his visits to Frodo, and "wisest of counsellors, most welcome of wanderers, a lord of the Mark, a chieftain of the Eorlingas" by Theoden, and probably several other things that don't leap immediately to mind. None of them deserve mention as "names"; all of them are equally labels or epithets. He never "went by" any of them. For that matter, "the White Rider" is similar; it appeared maybe three times total (twice at the end of "King of the Golden Hall" and once by Pippin from the walls of Minas Tirith) and no one ever addressed him that way. TCC (talk) (contribs) 08:20, 20 October 2006 (UTC)
- Re Carcharoth's comment in the thread on my talk page: Yes, "Dúnadan" was a name by which Aragorn was sometimes called. It "took", so to speak. No one ever really called Gandalf "Láthspell". And I'm sorry, but there's a vast difference between the formal bestowing of a name on coronation (or ordination, or the taking of monastic vows, etc.) and Wormtongue's little "neener-neener" comment. By that standard, I could say to you, "Dingleberry, I name you!" and that would actually be a name of yours from now on. Obviously absurd. TCC (talk) (contribs) 23:25, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
- Positive, negative, or what-have-you.... It needs to be a real name. For example, "Longshanks" was clearly something Aragorn was actually called by Breelanders. "Stick-at-naught Strider" possibly not, since it was probably just Bill Ferny mouthing off. This is on the same level, but even moreso since we know for a positive fact that no one ever called Gandalf that. TCC (talk) (contribs) 00:07, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
- By the way, in case you didn't see the note on my talk page, please follow the trail starting at Morgoth and comment on the appropriate article talk page. TCC (talk) (contribs) 00:09, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
Orphaned fair use image (Image:Phial.jpg)
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Phial.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that the image is unlicensed for use on Wikipedia and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful.
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Assessing importance
[edit]I think we should tackle this from two ends. First, the unassessed importance articles need assessing. See Category:Unknown-importance Tolkien articles. Secondly, we need to give a coherent structure to the levels, which we could do at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Middle-earth/Assessment/Importance, the subpage I've set up for the two lists we've done so far. The unassessed articles include lots of redirects and stubby articles that should be merged. I've tended to try and bring out the major characters and events and overview and list articles, plus the "real life" stuff, while pushing the minor characters and places as far down as possible (ie. leave them unassessed, and then either merge into lists or assess as low-importance). The manual lists are probably easier to sort out and discuss. I'm going to carry on sifting out mid-importance stuff. Do you want to look at the manual lists and see what you think? Carcharoth 23:29, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

Could you do me a favor?
[edit]Hi Mirlen. I would like to ask you to do me a favor. I am trying to get the dc Talk article to Featured Article status. I have worked on it and I want some feedback on it. I don't want a formal article review, jut some feedback. I am asking you because you are an atheiest and dc Talk is a Christian band, thus, I though that you might be able to review without a biased eye. Please let me know if you can do this, or if you have any questions. Thanks!!--Chilifix 04:13, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
Dispute on Tifa Lockhart's talk page
[edit]Hello! As part of the issues with OR and POV in Tifa's and Aerith's articles, I was wondering if you could comment on an ongoing dispute on the Tifa Lockhart talk page. Re:Tifa Lockhart article
[edit]Hello. I don't actually possess the Reunion Files, so I can't check for the source. However, I believe RoseDincht previously uploaded a scan of the page in question. You could try asking them. Alternatively, scans of the Reunion Files can be downloaded here - but it's a 600-megabyte download. Good luck, and thanks for all the work you've done so far in resolving the dispute. -ryand 06:08, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
- I tried searching for the exact scan again on the AdventChildren.net forums, but it's like wading through a minefield in there, and I couldn't find the scan itself. However, I do remember the quote being located as a caption next to an image of Tifa... so I guess you could look at all the images of Tifa and search for the word "恋人". Good luck. (The 'd' used to link to my talk page - then I got fed-up looking at at Esperanza signatures. :P) -ryand 07:13, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
Admin coaching, etc.
[edit]Are you ready to get started?
The waiting time over at Admin coaching is long (some people have been waiting in line since July). I'm an admin coach with the project, and for my students I set up a group discussion page so that we could all learn from each other. The scope of this concept has expanded into the Virtual classroom, which is an open forum for the teaching and learning of advanced Wikipedia skills.
Anyone and everyone is welcome to participate, as a student, as a coach, or both. Every week or two a new major topic of discussion or classroom assignment is introduced, usually with a guest writer who presents his or her expertise on the current subject and who remains on hand to answer questions. Everyone is encouraged to participate in the discussions, such as sharing your expertise, asking and answering questions, etc.
The current topic of discussion is vandalism, and our guest writer is Budgiekiller.
All discussions are open-ended, so all previous discussion topics and classroom assignments are still there for viewing and further participation. There are also sections for posting miscellaneous topics and questions, requesting coaching assistance, etc.
In addition to inviting those who would like to learn, I routinely invite experts from all over Wikipedia to come and contribute for the benefit of all. The VC is rapidly turning into a clearing house of the best resources, methods, and techniques known for working on Wikipedia.
You are cordially invited to participate.
Here's an announcement box which you can place on your userpage or at the top of your talk page for keeping up to date with classroom assignments.
I hope to see you there. Sincerely, The Transhumanist 08:04, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Orphaned fair use image (Image:AragornNorth.jpg)
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:AragornNorth.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

I have added a "{{prod}}" template to the article Jenny Dolfen, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}}
notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Non-free use disputed for Image:Anakin s.jpg
[edit]This file may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading Image:Anakin s.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read carefully the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content and then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies.
If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 21:19, 31 May 2007 (UTC)
Image tagging for Image:Gippal.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Gippal.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the source and creator of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the source and creator of the image on the image's description page, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided source information for them as well.
For more information on using images, see the following pages:

Fair use rationale for Image:JacenTK.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:JacenTK.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. ShakespeareFan00 16:45, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

Blanking of sandboxes
[edit]Just a quick note to let you know that I blanked two of your sandboxes (User:Mirlen/sandbox and User:Mirlen/sandbox/article) as they were appearing in some categories I was tidying. Hope you don't mind, and I hope you are still around and will return one day. As CBD said above, with the barnstar, you really did get the Middle-earth WikiProject up and running.
