Are you doing the Traffic report?
[edit]because I'm getting questions, so if you can't or don't want to do it this week, please let me know. Serendipodous 20:15, 7 January 2015 (UTC)
- User:Serendipodous, I want to do it, and I know its my job this week, but I've been swamped. In about 1.5 hours I will get it started and hopefully can bang it out.--Milowent • hasspoken 20:48, 7 January 2015 (UTC)

Any reason why no 'Free Neotarf' picture?
[edit]I've just noticed your Free Carol picture. There may be background problems of which I'm unaware, but from what I read of the Arbcom discussions, I found the banning of Neotarf a great deal harder to understand than the banning of Carol. So is there any reason why you are not showing a 'Free Neotarf' picture on your home page? And any reason why I shouldn't at least think about adding one on my own? Tlhslobus (talk) 05:33, 14 January 2015 (UTC)
- Tlhslobus, to be honest I only followed that arbitration enough to know Carol's banning was absurd. She's wacky and can push buttons, but no ban was warranted. I'm not a member of GGTF and not sure they'd even want me; I happen to have written many articles about women simply because they were missing articles that we should have.--Milowent • hasspoken 05:42, 14 January 2015 (UTC)

[edit]Please do not create pages that attack, threaten, or disparage their subject. Attack pages and files are not tolerated by Wikipedia and are speedily deleted. Users who create or add such material may be blocked from editing Wikipedia. Thank you. McGeddon (talk) 23:17, 15 January 2015 (UTC)
- Looks like that was the default and deliberately oblique speedy-deletion message from Twinkle. I flagged the ViralNova redirect for deletion because you'd pointed it at link bait, a pejorative. Possibly it made more sense at the time and the target article had something to say, but it reads like a deliberate attack in the current context. --McGeddon (talk) 23:20, 15 January 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for the explanation, McGeddon. In December 2013 the link bait article did not describe it as a perjorative, and included click bait in its content.[1]. Indeed I created Clickbait to redirect to link bait at that time. The current Clickbait article notes that Upworthy has been described as clickbait, and ViralNova is a cheaper clone of Upworthy that suddenly became popular in December 2013.[2]. Indeed, ViralNova is clickbait and I have no clue why that is "perjorative". Its a business model, we don't delete patent medicine articles as pejorative.--Milowent • hasspoken 00:43, 16 January 2015 (UTC)
- Might just be my ear, but flatly describing a site as "link bait" sounds closer to calling a product "quack medicine" than "patent medicine". I've put up a stub at ViralNova, since it seems to have some sources out there. --McGeddon (talk) 09:22, 16 January 2015 (UTC)

2014 list
[edit]Draft done. Numbers are down 18% from last year. Can't say whether that's a trend. Serendipodous 23:53, 21 January 2015 (UTC)
- looks good! How can we popularize this? A separate traffic report piece? As for the numbers, i have no idea. Remember that this years data includes only some mobile data, and as more internet traffic shifts to mobile, who knows. Facebook dropped from 30 million views to 20 million, but i don't think Facebook is dying. But we can draw some neat 2013/2014 comparisons: The biggest death of each year: Nelson Mandela v. Robin Willliams. Biggest TV show: Breaking Bad v. Game of Thrones. Biggest female celebrity: Jennifer Lawrence v. Arianna Grande. --Milowent • hasspoken 00:34, 22 January 2015 (UTC)
- User:The ed17 says we can put in an article next week. Also we should link to it from the Top 25 report (something I didn't do last year). BTW, I hope you're not doing the Traffic Report; the delay this week means we missed the Signpost, so it's probably best to skip the week and get back up to date next week, rather than being a week behind for eternity. Serendipodous 12:46, 22 January 2015 (UTC)
- Whoa, the signpost published on time? Thanks for the heads up! I'll complete the Top 25 for this week, but likely without great detail. I can still do next week if you'd like.--Milowent • hasspoken 13:41, 22 January 2015 (UTC)

[edit]Why did you remove the copyvio warnings from Jessica Dykstra? Deunanknute (talk) 05:42, 10 February 2015 (UTC)
- Deunanknute, for reason stated in my edit summary, "regardless of notability, those pages are variations or mirrors of the prior version of this article - remove speedy deletion template". This article has been deleted twice before I believe, but the other sites copied it.--Milowent • hasspoken 05:49, 10 February 2015 (UTC)

Presentation proposal for Wikimania 2015
[edit]How to pick up more women... | |
Hello! Victuallers and I have developed a proposal for a talk to be presented at Wikimania 2015. It's titled, How to pick up more women... -- as in more women editors and more women's biographies. Examples include the Edit-a-thon blitz during WikiWomen's History Month and the "new articles" work underway by WikiProject Women Writers. The Wikimania talk proposal review process has begun and there's no guarantee that this proposal will be accepted. That's where you come in. Please review our proposal and give us feedback. Ultimately, we hope you add your name to the signup at the bottom of the proposal which signifies you're interested in the talk (it does not signify you'll be attending the event). Thank you! That passport thing is odd to be that popular., apparently its been around awhile but only got viral enough this past week, though I don't see a reddit thread helping it get there yet. Odd that its #1 despite not being an culturally widespread as something like the Harlem Shake was.--Milowent • hasspoken 11:42, 29 March 2015 (UTC)
And the kiljoys killed the audio recording. I don't know why; everyone said to keep the original. Still, I suppose this is an abject lesson in why Wikipedia is such a poor meme generator. [edit]Hi there, hope you had a lovely weekend! Just in case you're swamped with pings for various things right now, I wanted to drop you a quick note here to say thank you again for your time in looking at my proposed updates for the Hill+Knowlton article and editing the article. In case you get a moment, I was able to get an image of John Hill released under CC-BY-3.0 and uploaded to Commons, would be great if you could add it to the article. Newspapers.com check-in
[edit]Hello Milowent,
You are receiving this message because you have a one-year subscription to Newspapers.com through the Wikipedia Library. This is a brief update, to remind you about that access:
- Please make sure that you can still log in to your Newspapers.com account. If you are having trouble let me know.
- Remember, if you find this source useful for your Wikipedia work, to include citations with links on Wikipedia. Links to partner resources are one of the few ways we can demonstrate usage and demand for accounts to our partners. The greater the linkage, the greater the likelihood a useful partnership will be renewed. Also, keep in mind that part of Newspapers.com is open access via the clipping function. Clippings allow you to identify particular articles, extract them from the original full sheet newspaper, and share them through unique URLs. Wikipedia users who click on a clipping link in your citation list will be able to access that particular article, and the full page of the paper if they come from the clipping, without needing to subscribe to Newspapers.com. For more information about how to use clippings, see http://www.newspapers.com/basics/#h-clips .
- Do you write unusual articles using this partner's sources? Did access to this source create new opportunities for you in the Wikipedia community? If you have a unique story to share about your contributions, let me know and we can set up an opportunity for you to write a blog post about your work with one of our partner's resources.
Finally, we would greatly appreciate it if you filled out this short survey. Your input will help us to facilitate this particular partnership, and to discover what other partnerships and services the Wikipedia Library can offer.
Thank you,
Wikipedia Library Newspapers.com account coordinator HazelAB (talk) 19:05, 13 April 2015 (UTC)

[edit]Hi Milowent,
Your application for a Newspapers.com account through the Wikipedia Library was approved last August, but we have no record of your having completed the process to claim your account. If you still want access, please let me know. If I don't hear from you, I'll assume you're not interested and the account will be given to another applicant. Thanks! HazelAB (talk) 16:46, 15 May 2015 (UTC)
- Since you haven't claimed your account, I'm removing your name from the list of Wikipedia Library Newspapers.com account holders. You are welcome to reapply if you want access in the future. All the best, HazelAB (talk) 14:21, 1 June 2015 (UTC)
Doomsday asteroids
[edit]Milowent, asteroids colliding with Earth are right up my alley. I wrote the wiki article about the Earth-impacting asteroid 2014 AA before even Peter Jenniskens knew about it. I assumed he had already been contacted. Oops. I was still the first to let him know after I had a wiki-page up about it. -- Kheider (talk) 15:52, 21 May 2015 (UTC)
- Fascinating stuff! I recently read A Short History of Nearly Everything and really enjoyed the section on asteroid impacts. As you commented on the notice board, few people are willing to wade into such debates unless they consider themselves experts. Or people like me who've been around long enough to know that subject matter expertise is not the same as procedural expertise.--Milowent • hasspoken 16:40, 21 May 2015 (UTC)
- Dude. You can make asteroids hit the Earth? I've gotta stop disagreeing with you in AfDs. Okay, keep already. I always wondered exactly what the limits of your willingness to include might be, and now I know: all the objects in the sky. At some point, can't we delete the very tiny ones? If I've misunderstood or mis-stated your position at ANI, please correct me here. BusterD (talk) 06:05, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
- BusterD, thanks for your kind and fair words at ANI. I really don't think every object in the sky is notable, I was primarily concerned at what I consider an ill-considered use of AfD. A few of these AfDs are even getting withdrawn because the objects are found to be notable. But even as to those articles which should be rightfully redirected, those articles have content which could be merged into more comprehensive list articles.--Milowent • hasspoken 23:02, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
- Will wonders never cease? You and I have finally seen an issue exactly the same way. If anything large enters the atmosphere, leave a message on my talk page first. Thanks. BusterD (talk) 23:47, 25 May 2015 (UTC)

They also tried to re-direct the mother ship because obviously any object that is 6 km in diameter, highly reflective, takes 418 hours to rotate, and has a rare asteroid type has sinister plans for us all. :) -- Kheider (talk) 20:29, 14 June 2015 (UTC)

No promises as I've not yet looked into your contribution history, but I do like that you are willing to put yourself forward as an admin, so I'm happy to give you support, honest opinion, and advice when you're ready. Regards SilkTork ✔Tea time 09:40, 10 September 2015 (UTC)
SilkTork, thanks for your follow-up note. I started to prepare a response to your first message and then sat back to consider it further. I think I have a lot going for me, but I'm a bit of an oddball as well.
- I've been a regular editor for 6 years now, and a significant content contributor. (Currently something like #1721 of all time article creators). I created WP:UBLPR which eliminated the backlog of unreferenced BLPs in 2010-2011, and created the WP:TOP25 report (though Serendipodous deserves primary credit for its continued existence). I've never been blocked, banned, etc. And I think I could help the project by doing admin tasks including resolving editor disputes, closing AfDs, deleting expired PRODS, handling REFUND requests, etc.
- But I've seen how RFAs go. Over the years, I occasionally have been dragged to ANI over disputes after appearing to go bonkers in connection to a content dispute. See, e.g., [3]. A primary example might be in 2013 where I intervened to strongly counteract the creation of "woman novelist" categories, e.g., Amanda_Filipacchi#Wikipedia_op-ed and Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/IncidentArchive795#User:Milowent_has_engaged_in_unsupported_personal_attacks.2C_insults_and_disruptive_emptying_of_categories_under_discussion. It was a black eye on Wikipedia and I among many other editors stemmed the tide; but even that serious issue could stand some silly humour. In the context of these debates, I have made ridiculous claims (such as that I was going to make an asteroid collide with earth to stop a mass AfD of asteriod articles instead of guidelines discussions to come up with basic rules), though often the complainer about me has been the one actually banned or disciplined because I merely elevated the attention given to the problem, see Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/IncidentArchive740#Harassing_messages_from_User:Milowent.
- These shenanigans would have to cease in an admin role; when an employee gets promoted into management that's no longer appropriate (though Wikipediocracy assumes otherwise [4] "I will be instructing my stockbroker to move a substantial share of my portfolio into Jiffy Pop"), and I really don't think I've done anything too bad. Especially considering some of the delusional folks who run for adminship, without a chance. I've gotten many thanks and barnstars for bringing humor into disputes, I like to think I'm a positive force for the good of the universe.
So should have a few spare minutes, I would appreciate your input and honest opinion into whether it is worthwhile to propose myself for adminship. I don't want to waste anyone's time, including my own or yours, on that endeavor if it doesn't make sense to try. (Also, talk page lurkers, you are free to add your comments or jokes.)Milowent • hasspoken 16:41, 10 September 2015 (UTC)

I would love to help with the Traffic report next week
[edit]Please let me know how best to help! EllenCT (talk) 00:18, 4 September 2015 (UTC)
- EllenCT, that would be great! Why don't you take a swing at drafting the next Top 25? The WP:5000 will be updated about 7 hours after midnight UTC on Sunday. Typically I copy the current Top 25 into my sandbox, and create the new report starting with that. Using the WP:5000, we make sure we exclude articles with very high mobile or very low mobile counts (its usually obvious, because the subjects are not anything popular in reality), and work our way through the top 25. I usually write my summary after doing the Top25, and then make a truncated version of the top 10 for the Signpost. I will plan to look at the WP:5000 when it is issued and make any comments of relevance on why some things might be popular (like a reddit thread, etc, you've been reading long enough to know the sort of stuff we see). Procedurally, when the new Top25 is ready, we copy the old one into an archive page, and replace the current one with the new one (updating links to next/last report). Let me know if you have any other questions-- you can also email me at milo_went at yahoo.com. Cheers!--Milowent • hasspoken 14:30, 4 September 2015 (UTC)
- Pinging Serendipodous for any additional comments he may have.--Milowent • hasspoken 14:31, 4 September 2015 (UTC)
- Thank you and Serendipodous both. I got as far as User:EllenCT/DraftTop10 but before I continue I would like to ask you both about how you choose themes in general and what themes in particular you see in that list. I'm also not exactly sure what needs to be done for the top 25 -- is there a top 25 list with commentary, too? EllenCT (talk) 15:18, 7 September 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks EllenCT. As for themes, just look at topics with multiple slots. Obviously, the running theme this week, as it has been for the last three weeks, is Straight Outta Compton. Another is the onset of video game season, with the releases of Until Dawn and Metal Gear Solid 5. A third is horror, with the release of Until Dawn coinciding with the death of Wes Craven. And obviously the popularity of Narcos is worth noting as well. BTW, We Are Your Friends is likely on this list because it is one of the biggest box office bombs in history. Boxofficemojo is one of the unsung arrows in our quiver. Serendipodous 17:27, 7 September 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks again! I added that We Are Your Friends link. EllenCT (talk) 18:32, 7 September 2015 (UTC)

Okay, Milowent, I'm pretty happy with the current state of User:EllenCT/DraftTop10. Please let me know your comments and how to do the top-25. EllenCT (talk) 18:57, 7 September 2015 (UTC)
- EllenCT, this looks great! For the top 25, simply extend what you've done through the Top 25 places. I do think we'll need to pull out the non-free images, or someone will pull them out for us, its not worth debating those folks. The Top 10 can be submitted to the signpost (if you are unsure how to do it, let me know, trial and error will work too!).--Milowent • hasspoken 12:42, 8 September 2015 (UTC)
Stub-class stubs
[edit]Hi. Some weeks ago, you removed a stub template from The Girl on the Train (novel) with the summary, “not really a stub!”
Unless I misunderstand the relationship between stub-class articles and article stubs, this article, assessed Stub-Class by WikiProject Novels (edit: by you—that’s surprising), is a stub. If I’m wrong, please point me to something that explains the difference, because I looked and didn’t find anything. Thanks. —67.14.236.50 (talk) 00:41, 9 September 2015 (UTC)
- Greetings! When I "assessed" the article, it was a very short one that I had created. Its at least a "start" by now, if not a "C". See Wikipedia:WikiProject_Novels/Assessment#Quality_scale, which I've also never looked at before. My rule of thumb is that an article with no subdivisions, simply a paragraph or so, is a stub. Once it is fleshed out with more sections, including plot and infobox, its at least a "start."--Milowent • hasspoken 11:29, 9 September 2015 (UTC)
- That seems a good rule of thumb. I’ll self-revert that stub template and change the article to Start-Class. Or does that need to be done by someone in the WikiProject? Oh well, someone will revert if it’s a problem. Thanks for clarifying! —67.14.236.50 (talk) 22:25, 9 September 2015 (UTC)
Hobbyists
[edit]Re: your remarks @ AfD Robot Dance. I'll improve my life by never coming near an edit to an urban dance article again. Too many hobbyists like yourself there. Cheers. Tapered (talk) 18:43, 15 September 2015 (UTC)
- And irony but no sarcasm, thanks for helping me define the issue for myself. Regards Tapered (talk) 18:45, 15 September 2015 (UTC)
- Haha, I am sure you are right, Tapered. I have no special interest in dance crazes; I'm a fan of significant pop culture of any century, whether it be a Sumerian schoolboy musings, the bestselling racist American novel of 1837, or a dance craze of 1974. I prefer Herodotus over Thucydides, and I suppose it affects how I approach notability. But without Herodotus, we'd never know that Phoenicians circumnavigated Africa. This may not be the same as Michael Jackson circumnavigating the Soul Train stage, I admit.--Milowent • hasspoken 19:31, 15 September 2015 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Hillary Dennis Rodman Clinton
[edit]Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. -- Tavix (talk) 01:02, 2 October 2015 (UTC)
Please do not create pages are blatant hoxes as you did with... that's funniest thing I've seen in a long time! Ok, let's start again. Please do not create pages are blatant hoxes as you did with... Hillary Dennis Rodman Clinton! No, wait, I can do this with a straight face. Please do not create pages are blatant hoxes as you did with... that was just brilliant satire. And I seem to have temporarily misplaced my WP:ADMIN hat. Look, can I get back to you about this some time later on?--Shirt58 (talk) 09:45, 2 October 2015 (UTC)
- Shirt58, I am duly admonished. For the viewing public, this was only a redirect, and arose during the insanely long debate over the proper naming of Hillary Clinton.--Milowent • hasspoken 17:32, 2 October 2015 (UTC)
I noticed there was no Top 25 this week
[edit]I would have done it but my computer has been offline for the last two weeks. Since doing one takes six hours minimum, I will probably focus on doing next week's when the data come out tomorrow. If you don't want to do this week's, that's fine, we'll just copy/paste the raw list like last time. Has Ellen explained her issue with exclusions yet? Serendipodous 17:50, 3 October 2015 (UTC)
- Serendipodous, egads thanks for the note. I had asked Ellen to do it, and she had indicated she would do it, so something must have prevented her. I am not sure what you mean about the exclusions, I saw some references to it a few weeks ago but did not know what the issue was. I will create last week's missing report in the next few days. Thanks.--Milowent • hasspoken 12:34, 5 October 2015 (UTC)

I have a Reddit gate on my userpage if you need it. Just type in "url:" and then the wikipedia URL, and it should take you to the TIL thread. I say "should", because even then it doesn't always work. A good alternative is to do a custom range time Google search of the two days of the Reddit spike for the article title, and you should find it within a few minutes. Serendipodous 11:56, 28 October 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks!. I was a bit lazy on the Samburu search and pleased that another editor was able to find it and willing to share it.--Milowent • hasspoken 12:24, 28 October 2015 (UTC)

Please explain your deletion of sourced content on Bellevue, Mississippi. The edits you reverted were sourced, and had removed unsourced edits. My edits were an attempt to position this proposed place within the context of Mississippi. It was an entirely good faith edit, yet you accused me in your edit summary the opposite. Please explain yourself. Magnolia677 (talk) 04:54, 5 November 2015 (UTC)
- Magnolia677, I saw your comment on John's page.[5] Why don't you write a letter to the Hattieburg American asking if Bellevue exists? It would make for a ton of fun if they've published it. You've argued again and again that the place doesn't exist, you lost the AFD in a landslide. Just take a break for a bit. I didn't intend to delete any new sourcing if I did so.--Milowent • hasspoken 05:10, 5 November 2015 (UTC)

- I'll look once you agree to stay away from the article for at least a week. I know that information was included in articles I found in researching the community, a community you contend does not exist.--Milowent • hasspoken 05:21, 5 November 2015 (UTC)

Top 25 report update
