Administrators' newsletter – April 2021

News and updates for administrators from the past month (March 2021).

Administrator changes

removed AlexandriaHappyme22RexxS

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, F7 (invalid fair-use claim) subcriterion a has been deprecated; it covered immediate deletion of non-free media with invalid fair-use tags.
  • Following a request for comment, page movers were granted the delete-redirect userright, which allows moving a page over a single-revision redirect, regardless of that redirect's target.

Technical news

  • When you move a page that many editors have on their watchlist the history can be split and it might also not be possible to move it again for a while. This is because of a job queue problem. (T278350)
  • Code to support some very old web browsers is being removed. This could cause issues in those browsers. (T277803)

Hi, nice bot. It's sent me a couple notifications telling me a Wikidata item has been linked to an article and helpfully giving me the id #. It would great if I could click on the id number and be taken to the Wikidata item in question, if possible. Cheers, -- Facts707 (talk) 06:21, 9 April 2021 (UTC)

@Facts707: Thanks! The notification is built in to MediaWiki, so I think it would need a Phabricator ticket to suggest it to WMF. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 16:06, 9 April 2021 (UTC)

Amateur Radio Astronomy

Hello, I would like to get into radio astronomy as an amateur. I have a general amateur radio license in the U.S. Any suggestions? Thank you. Prairie Astronomer Talk 15:45, 21 April 2021 (UTC)

@Prairie Astronomer: You don't need a license to do radio astronomy, since all you do is receive. :-) Depending on your interest, I'd recommend starting with something like a meteor detector, or neutral hydrogen detector, then maybe something like radio jove or a full dish. I'm afraid I don't get to do much amateur radio astronomy, though, mostly I use bigger dishes! Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 17:13, 21 April 2021 (UTC)
