I'm sorry but to me Meregh seems rather like a locality of two-three buildings (tracing back to the italian colonialism -see 1925 section and and this photo of zaptié fortresses at Meregh) absolutely not a city.--Sweetcorn (msg) 09:38, 6 April 2011 (UTC)

Ok, but that first link to colonial-period material doesn't appear to refer to Mareeg/Meregh; it mentions "Belet Meregh Uen", presumably a reference to Beledweyne near the Ogaden. The second shows one picture frame of the town ca. 1989, not the entire town today. Mareeg seems to have grown a bit since it was first established as a coastal outpost of the various Harti Sultanates and later as a colonial outpost [1]; it's a small town. If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Puntland Post requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hang on}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion, or "db", tag; if no such tag exists, then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hang-on tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. The Elves Of Dunsimore (talk) 01:49, 7 April 2011 (UTC)

License tagging for File:Puntpostlog.gif

Thanks for uploading File:Puntpostlog.gif. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.

For help in choosing the correct tag, or for any other questions, leave a message on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 18:06, 7 April 2011 (UTC)

Invitation to take part in a pilot study

I am a Wikipedian, who is studying the phenomenon on Wikipedia. I need your help to conduct my research on about understanding "Motivation of Wikipedia contributors." I would like to invite you to a short survey. Please give me your valuable time, which estimates only 5 minutes. cooldenny (talk) 19:11, 14 April 2011 (UTC)

Sounds interesting; thanks for the link. Middayexpress (talk) 16:27, 15 April 2011 (UTC)

Somali diaspora

I noticed you removed the UAE link from the Somali diaspora template because it's not an article. I'm not sure if there's any sort of rule where topics have to have an article to be on diaspora templates. Also, the UAE had many ethnic group articles before but they were later all merged and unified under the the title Expatriates in the United Arab Emirates, so I thought adding Somalis in that page would probably be the best option. Mar4d (talk) 03:18, 15 April 2011 (UTC)

I see what you're saying, as I was not aware of any such merger. It would perhaps be better though to reserve such templates for actual articles since certain ethnic groups have large diasporas, not all of which have or require their own articles. Listing one such link opens the door to listing all such links, which makes for a messy template. Middayexpress (talk) 16:25, 15 April 2011 (UTC)

Omar Eno discusses different languages and cultures in Somalia

I thought this might be of interest. I filmed it in 2006. Please like, comment, etc. Thanks. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WAU9BQjobec —Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.51.84.181 (talk) 23:41, 21 April 2011 (UTC)

Hi Denver Babushka. Thanks for the link. I'm familiar with Mr. Eno's work; he's a Bantu scholar and activist who has written some interesting things on Somali history. However, in my opinion, some of this work is inaccurate or even misleading. For example, he states in the video that there are two major languages spoken in Somalia (what he refers to as "Maay Maay" and "Mahaa" or "Maxaa"), and that the Bantu predominantly speak Maay Maay. However, what he fails to mention is that Maay Maay, or "Af-Maay" as it is sometimes called, is an Afro-Asiatic language of the Cushitic branch, just like the closely related Somali language (which he labels "Maxaa", short for "Maxaa-tiri"; an alternate name used by Maay Maay speakers to refer to the dominant Somali language -- see Rahanweyn). He also neglects to mention that Maay Maay is not the Bantus' mother tongue. The latter would be Bantu languages from the separate Niger-Congo language family which dominates West, Central and Southeastern Africa. The Bantus' ancestors not that long ago adopted the Afro-Asiatic Maay Maay language from their Rahanweyn Somali patrons, who are the main speakers and originators of the language. Another thing Mr. Eno does not mention is that Maay Maay is viewed within Somalia (and has long been classified as) a dialect of the Somali language. In fact, this is legally enshrined in Article 7 of the country's Transitional Federal Charter [2]: "The official languages of the Somali Republic shall be Somali (Maay and Maxaatiri) and Arabic. The second languages of the Transitional Federal Government shall be English and Italian". It's only the Bantu languages that, for better or worse, are not part of the legal code. So when Mr. Eno dismisses the Somali language as the dominant "clan language" that was "imposed on every other Somali group", he is in effect inventing a dichotomy that does not and has never existed in reality. The primary division in Somali society has traditionally been between the Northern Somali pastoral groups (the Maxaa-tiri or Standard Somali speakers) and the Southern Somali agro-pastoral and artisanal groups (the Maay Maay speakers i.e. the Rahanweyn/Sab). Both of these peoples are Cushitic by language and ethnic origin, and collectively, they form what is referred to as the Somali ethnic group. This genealogical structure is represented metaphorically by the Somalis' traditions of descent involving two forefathers: Samaale (the ancestor of the Maxaa-tiri or Standard Somali speakers) and Sab (the ancestor of the Maay Maay speakers i.e. the Rahanweyn/Sab), both of whom ultimately descend from a common ancestor at a higher structural level (c.f [3]). As Bantus are not of Cushitic origin and are visible minorities, they do not figure into this dynamic at all and thus are not included in the Somali ethnic group. The true cleavage of society within Somalia on a global level, then, is actually between residents who are of Cushitic origin by blood (the Somali, in the broad sense) and those who are not (ethnic minority groups). The latter include Bantus, the Eyle and the Bajuni, among others. If the foregoing is somewhat confusing, I recommend reading pages 8-11 in this book [4] by the Somali linguist and historian Mohamed Diriye Abdullahi; it explains what I've attempted to describe above much more succinctly and elegantly. Best regards, Middayexpress (talk) 17:01, 22 April 2011 (UTC)

Riverside Plaza

Strange, I made some edits after you posted on my talk page yesterday but I didn't get the orange new messages until just now. I noticed that some of the accounts were from 2008 and they are too old for a checkuser to be able to do anything about. I've given them another warning and will keep an eye on it. CambridgeBayWeather (talk) 14:58, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

Left a response on your talk page. Middayexpress (talk) 19:08, 2 May 2011 (UTC)
I blocked both the IP and Jimjoneslives666 as they are obviously the same person. At the same time I semi-protected the article. Cheers. CambridgeBayWeather (talk) 19:14, 2 May 2011 (UTC)
I blocked them for a week and will semi-protect the article as well. If you want an banning that would need a discussion at WP:ANI. I might not be on too much after today. CambridgeBayWeather (talk) 16:29, 6 May 2011 (UTC)

Dahabshiil last edit

I see that you have reverted my changes to the first two sections; I have actually expanded the whole article to include much more detail on this company. The civil war is an integral part of its history, and remittances are and have always been far and away its biggest market. You should really have discussed these changes before simply reverting those two sections back to the previous edit. Today I will continue with the full edit, which is fully referenced and includes a thorough description of the company's operations, investments and media coverage. Please read it and let me know your thoughts. Thank you. Biggleswiki (talk) 08:38, 6 May 2011 (UTC)

Actually, it's you who should have discussed your changes and first sought consensus since they were quite substantial. The civil war is not an integral part of Dahabshiil's history; only the fact that it benefited from a larger Somali diaspora is, and that was already mentioned as was much of what you added, only without peacock terms. Please refer to the manual of style for how to write in a neutral encyclopedic register. Middayexpress (talk) 08:53, 6 May 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for your latest - on a basic level there was information lacking in the info box (which I updated), and a lot of detail on the company from which this article would clearly benefit. You can't just pick up on one or two sentences with which you disagree and take them as justification for removing my entire entry. Can you therefore please give me a list from my last revision of the amendments that you would consider acceptable, and continue this discussion on the article's discussion page? Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Biggleswiki (talkcontribs) 11:30, 6 May 2011 (UTC)
I already responded there. I'm waiting for your reply. Also, in future, please remember to sign your posts. Middayexpress (talk) 11:32, 6 May 2011 (UTC)

What's with the deletion war?

When did Darood and Hawiye decide to take the civil war to Wikipedia? Ingoman (talk) 22:47, 18 May 2011 (UTC)

I'm not sure if one unsuccessful WP:PROD nomination qualifies as a deletion war. It's also difficult to say which clan (if any) the nom belongs to. For what it's worth, he claims to be from Ethiopia. Middayexpress (talk) 05:57, 19 May 2011 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use File:Abd Al-Rahman Al-Jabarti.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Abd Al-Rahman Al-Jabarti.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Fut.Perf. 11:18, 19 May 2011 (UTC)
