Writing about yourself
[edit]You are welcome to contribute to Wikipedia, but it is not a social media site like Facebook or LinkedIn for people to write about themselves. It is a quite different sort of site, a project to build an encyclopedia, so it is selective about subjects for articles. Writing about oneself is strongly discouraged, for reasons explained at Wikipedia is not about YOU and Wikipedia:Autobiography.
Wikipedia user pages are not like those at social networking sites. Their use is explained at WP:NOTWEBHOST:
"Wikipedians have individual user pages, but they should be used primarily to present information relevant to work on the encyclopedia. Limited autobiographical information is allowed, but user pages do not serve as personal webpages, blogs, or repositories for large amounts of material irrelevant to collaborating on Wikipedia. If you want to post your résumé or make a personal webpage, please use one of the many free providers on the Internet or any hosting included with your Internet account. The focus of user pages should not be social networking or amusement, but rather providing a foundation for effective collaboration. Humorous pages that refer to Wikipedia in some way may be created in an appropriate namespace. Personal web pages are often speedily deleted."
You can find out more about Wikipedia at the WP:Welcome page and the WP:Introduction, as well as Wikipedia's plain and simple conflict of interest guide. Thanks. --Drm310 🍁 (talk) 14:13, 30 November 2020 (UTC)
- Drm310, you are right to criticize attempts to use Wikipedia as a social network. However, I have examined the "deleted" user page that you had deleted. If Mfarabola was indeed writing about himself, then he was writing about a photographer who died almost exactly 37 years ago. This would be a most remarkable case of contribution from beyond the grave, one that would amply deserve a write-up in the Signpost. -- Hoary (talk) 00:50, 3 December 2020 (UTC)
- @Hoary: Well, I didn't delete the page (only nom'd it) as I'm not an admin and have no such privileges. As for the message, I probably saw the similarity between the subject and the username, and just went on autopilot.
{{uw-coi}}
was probably the more appropriate choice of template here. --Drm310 🍁 (talk) 06:13, 3 December 2020 (UTC)

- Drm310, yes, it's now obvious to me that my wording, "you had deleted", is ambiguous. (I'd meant "whose deletion you'd proposed".) Sorry about that. And of course this wasn't a suitable use of a user page. -- Hoary (talk) 06:24, 3 December 2020 (UTC)

Conflict of interest
[edit]It's clear that you are not Tullio Farabola, but you say that he was your father. You therefore have a conflict of interest when writing about him. Please read and digest the page "Conflict of interest". If this is dismayingly long, please read and digest the page "Plain and simple conflict of interest guide". Perhaps you prefer to read Italian: it is likely (although not certain) that the gist of the page "Contenuti promozionali o celebrativi" is very similar to that of "Conflict of interest". -- Hoary (talk) 06:45, 3 December 2020 (UTC)
