Sorry :-(

[edit]

I can only say that I'm really sorry that my joke went so badly and that I let so many people down. It's actually making me feel quite depressed :-( I've since withdrawn my request for adminship. I'm now sending a personal apology to all those who've opposed the adminship because of my actions. - Ta bu shi da yu 02:27, 24 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

After my premature listing of David Helvarg on WP:FAC I moved it to WP:RFC. It has now been hugely rewritten and I would welcome your comments at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/David Helvarg/archive1. --Theo (Talk) 15:16, 24 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Soda

[edit]

Hey Meelar, do you drink a lot of soda?

Don't bother answering him. See my talk page if you want to know why. This user (aka Andrew Lin) is using talk pages as platforms to annoy and spread his odd anti-soda campaign since his articles about the same have all been deleted or are up for VFD. - Jersyko 17:38, May 25, 2005 (UTC)

I attributed the assertion re his politics in the lead to a named reporter. Any better? PedanticallySpeaking 18:47, May 26, 2005 (UTC)

User Pages

[edit]

Why can't I add mah Gangsta Walk award to people's user pages. Other people add their awards to other users pages and dont have them deleted so why should mine? Is it because you disagree with th e nature of my award? YOu got something against crunk and thug? Too bad, thats not your problem. You are discrimating. If you do not provide me with an adequate response or re-revert your deletions of my awards I will begin deleting every Barnstar Award I find and leaving a note that User: Meelar has decided it is against the rules to add awards to pages. -BrowardDawgg 22:47, 26 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

WHITE DAWG Gangsta Walk Award

[edit]

Meelar, if the individual users are not interested in the receiving the award, they can remove it from their pages on their own. Please refrain from editing other users' pages to remove awards. I restored it on my page and personally think that you might want to consider reverting your other edits. JMaxwell 02:27, 27 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Meelar, thank you for the message. Because I only know Mlorrey since yesterday, I choose to refrain from signing the RFC page. Although, I got a slight feeling that he tends to support the JPFO organization (as he seems to have the same mindset as this group, in supporting fascism claims against gun control advocates). It may be that I'm a culprit too because I - as a Swiss - am trying to give the articles a certain "European sense" by thinking "Wikipedia is not the USA". So I've written in Alexander (movie), that the depictions of homosexuality were very mild, which was later changed. Gee, everything I know about Mlorrey - before reading his RFC - is on Talk:Jews_for_the_Preservation_of_Firearms_Ownership. Regards, --Keimzelle 06:53, 27 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

What is this about a "test"? Kindly undo the block immediately. deeceevoice 09:04, 27 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Three times I got a "User is blocked" message which identified you as the culprit. When I checked your user contributions, I read something about a "test" being successful. It seemed to be fairly temporary, however. (Can't explain that.) Because I made an talk page edit, then moved to edit an article and couldn't do it. But a few minutes after e-mailing you, I could edit again. Weird? deeceevoice 19:12, 27 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

No nefarious intent -- yes, already understood. The system does have its perversities/glitches -- like the way sections sometimes are duplicated during edit conflicts. Confounding. Peace 2 u. deeceevoice 20:12, 27 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Mediation

[edit]

FYI I have hereby requested mediation against you and Firebug's edit-stalking.Mlorrey 21:08, 1 Jun 2005 (UTC)

You cannot move a case to arbitration until a mediator has accepted jurisidiction and ruled that resolution is unattainable. This is like appealing a case before it's been heard. You don't have standing. Mlorrey 04:49, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Furthermore, under the Hague Service Convention, I hereby serve you notice:

Objection

[edit]

Mlorrey challenges the reality of Firebug as a person independent of being a sockpuppet of Meelar.Mlorrey 04:12, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Objection 2

[edit]

Mlorrey also challenges Firebug's certification as a co-plaintiff, as Firebug intentionally initiated agression against my edits, AFTER this dispute began, which is a violation of dispute resolution protocol, in order gain this certification, and therefore is intentionally 'throwing himself in front of a bus'. This is fraud and his certification should be dismissed by whoever is ajudicating this court.Mlorrey 04:18, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Temporary Injunction/Restraining Order invoked against Meelar/Firebug

[edit]

Mlorrey has also previously requested that this be moved to mediation, but has not been notified of any mediator taking jurisdiction of this case via message or email. Therefore, this case cannot move forward, nor can the alleged co-plaintiffs take further action until mediation jurisdiction has been established. Under the Hague Service Convention, all parties are entitled to be served proper notice of any actions. As a website providing service in many Hague signatory nations (including the US, Canada, and Europe), wikipedia is bound by this treaty. Until such is done, Mlorrey hereby revokes Meelar/Firebug's further authority to initiate force against him or his edits in wikipedia. This is to be considered a temporary injunction/restraining order against further changes of his edits and all reversions committed by Meelar/Firebug since the date of this RFC must be reversed, until such time as an official Wikipedia mediator acceptable to both sides agrees to accept jurisdiction over this case. Arbitration case - final decision

[edit]

A decision has been reached in the arbitration case you requested. The account "User:LevelCheck" is to be blocked indefinitely as a disruptive potential sockpuppet. Please see Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/LevelCheck#Final decision for further details and the full decision. -- sannse (talk) 22:28, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I will add my name to the arbitration case against Mlorrey as soon as it appears on the WP:RFAr page. This user's behavior flagrantly violates NPOV, and he has recently become incoherent and abusive. Royal Assent

[edit]

As far as I know the Dutch Royal Assent is as follows:

  • Lower House is ratifing a proposal (e.g. proposal on Local Government Reform);
  • The Senate also ratifies the proposal;
  • The King or Queen signs the proposal, countersigned by the Minister of Justice and the Minister for Internal Affairs and Relation within the Realm (the latter is responsible for Local Government);
  • The proposal is made public in the Staatscourant (official paper of the Government of the Netherlands);
  • On the annunced date in the proposal, (usually the first day after publication) the proposal becomes an Act.

Hi Meelar.... yeh I did wonder about that.... it was only that so many people had said it could have been speedy deleted, that I thought I'd add the {{delete}} tags to see if someone would. I only listed it on VfD in the first place cos it wasn't total nonsense, but since people seemed to find it speedy deleteable, I thought I may as well try for it. Is there any purpose in voting Speedy Delete on VfD other than to show it could have met speedy del criteria in the past? Cheers, UkPaolo 07:35, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I would like to express my thanks to everybody helping in the nomination of Antarctic krill. I think 3 1/2 supports and a long long discussion are an unexpected and great outcome for a critter so remote and unknown - you should see how little and poor Antarctic krill is represented in Encarta and Britannica - this is the best reviewed and resourced general article of krill we know of - it is impossible to fullfill all wishes at the same time - this is what we did with our all product peer review stamp to qualify this stage of the article for academic exercises, especially for our dreams of a Virtual university within Wikiversity - good luck to you all Uwe Kils 21:48, Jun 14, 2005 (UTC)

Uwe wants to share this with you (from his talk page):

Hello Kils

[edit]

Just would like to state that i have very much enjoyed being involved in a project of this nature. To see the speed of co-operation between various people was (Uwe, Lupo and Salleman and all others) fantastic. It was a complete buzz to go off researching about a scientific subject and coming to some understanding and appreciation of a creature that i would have no knowledge or interest in otherwise. I would like to say that it takes a damn good teacher to get others interested in what they teach and i for one, if only in a rudimentary and general way have found the subject of Krill and sorrounding issues of ecology and environment fascinating. I think that says a lot about your willingness to let others participate in something which you obviously have great knowledge in and could easily have been a lot less humble with. At some point i will put up some informtion on my home page so at least people know a little more about me. Am going to try to extend the article on Ice-algae so any info you may have would be good. I hope the article on Antartic Krill gets featured as i think it is now very good.

Wikiversity sounds like a good idea but will need more time to go through the proposal (not too sure what help i could be).

Hello Meelar, quite by coincidence I run accross a text about the Maria Pia Bridge in the city of Porto wich was designed and constructed by Gustave Eiffel. The text, which I assume is the original, is found in: [2] the site of the Porto City Council. The description of the bridge in Eiffel's wikipedia article is verbatim the same as the text in the City of Porto site. Is this a copyright violation? If so what ought to be done? I have edited the entry with just about the same information but citing a source, different from the one I identify here. Could you please give some feedback on this? Copyrighted image?

[edit]

Can you tell me if this image: [3] is in the public domain or not? It's on the city of Norwalk, Connecticut's website but I'm not sure if it's in the public domain. I know that federal government pictures are in the public domain but what about Connecticut? --Nyr14 July 9, 2005 03:38 (UTC)

Thanks for the advice regarding the picture. Can you please look at the Politics section of the Austin, Texas page? A user wrote, "One consequence of this is that the central city has been gerrymandered by the Republican-controlled state legislature into several U.S. Congressional districts to dilute its influence vis a vis the suburbs. To a limited degree the division between Democratic and Republican precincts coincides with the aforementioned divisions between supporters of environmental regulations and supporters of unfettered urban growth."

However, this is simply incorrect. Courts have ruled that there wasn't any gerrymandering. The Associated Press has reported, "The three-judge panel reconfirmed its original decision that the map does not unconstitutionally gerrymander Texas voting districts for partisan purposes[4]." I've discussed this on the talk page but the adamrice just keeps repeating an, as of now, unsourced allegation that the "GOP countered that it was done for political purposes". Please look at it. --Nyr14 July 9, 2005 16:15 (UTC)

Help with a small goofup

[edit]

Hello, Meelar, you were so kind to welcome me to Wiki recently. Perhaps you can help me.

Today, I contributed an article about the early African-American writer Pauline Hopkins. Before entering it, I checked that there was no article already about her here. To do that, I searched for "Pauline hopkins" (note I made a typo when entering her name and neglected to capitalize her surname, which I didn't discover until later). Wiki told me there was no article for her and invited me to submit one, which I did. However, the heading on that article now is listed as "Pauline hopkins -- From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia."

In that you're more Wiki-proficient than I am, and I don't know how to correct this, I thought I'd ask you: How can this error be corrected? Within the article itself, everything is capitalized correctly. But the header can't be changed. It should obviously be "Pauline Hopkins" and not "Pauline hopkins."

Now, links will only work to that article if it's inputted incorrectly, e.g. Pauline hopkins but not Pauline Hopkins.

Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to provide...

You wrote: (remove "System of the World, The"--how is this science fiction?)

The book is science fiction even though it does not take place in the future. The author (Neal Stephenson) claims it is science fiction because it is fiction about science and scientific thought. Also, it includes elements of science fantasy - the character Enoch Root is at least 300 years old. Finally, go to a book store or library, and you will find it in the science fiction section. Would you mind if I recategorized this book as Science Fiction? -Armaced 21:37, 12 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

NPOV question

[edit]

Hey there.

I heard you were interested in maintaining NPOV for articles, and I have one that I was hoping you might examine: Old Dominion University.

The second paragraph of this article seems to have a derogatory tone, but the author seems determined to defend this portion. Do you think it could be improved in any way?

The article in question has had information on the academic status of Old Dominion University defaced many times, most recently by the user at IP 68.96.193.153. The portion in question reads
Old Dominion is a tier 4 public university and primarily serves as a community and commuter college. While they have been endeavoring to change this reputation the Norfolk area's high crime statistics and a general failure to attract top quality faculty and students have hindered their efforts.
It has been determined several times in the past that this information is in fact NPOV, as it simply states facts. Old Dominion is indeed a tier 4 public university, and it indeed services the state primarily as a community college for Norfolk, Virginia servicing a population almost entirely of commuters students. Old Dominion has indeed been trying to change this reputation and has been attempting to compete on a broader level with other colleges in the state. It has often been cited that the reason for their failure in this regard, despite having attracted a large military based student body from local area military bases, is due to both the crime in Norfolk, making it less desireable of a place to live and go to school, and a below average faculty and student body as indicated by national tests. This is all consistant with their tier 4 ranking. Agriculture 04:12, 21 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Meelar. Sorry to bother you, but could you have a glance at this article and its Talk:Charles Taze Russell? Standard religious dispute: one editor asserting control of the article on grounds of unique insider knowledge, while everyone else sees it as NPOV breach. I hope it's just misunderstanding of how Wikipedia NPOV works. As you welcomed this editor, User:Pastorrussell, maybe you might be able to offer some ideas of how to break out of the deadlock? Thanks. Tearlach 12:12, 20 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks very much for your comment. My own view is that rigorously citing sources is a good approach; I've seen it work with other very similar disputes such as Iglesia ni Cristo. Unfortunately, it's escalated overnight to an RfC - eurgh - and as I raised it as an option, it'd be turncoat of me not to support it. Tearlach 14:39, 20 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Please could you sort your edits at the above article, as on my screen now there is a great white void and the pictures are all now out of sequence! thanks Giano | talk 22:12, 21 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I've put them back into order, is there still a problem with your page? I don't really understan images but they now appear OK to me Giano | talk 22:30, 21 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
  • Is there not a page somewhere for those like me, who are intellectually challenged, explaining how to place an image, (in words of one syllable) because I have only one format, and I just have to keep previewing, as I place it between paragraphs and sentences until it looks at least slightly on the correct place, yet other people seem to be able to do all sorts of strange and odd things including the use of odd words and symbols which seem to achieve amazing results. I would suggest that Meelar is fully capable of making his own decisions after reviewing the evidence collected.

I was just on RC patrol when I encountered something I've never seen before. Windows Vista, which I edited only a few minutes ago now has this history, only two edits. It seems to me that SecretIondon did move the page, and although the content was returned the history has been lost along with Windows is gay!. As you are the admin who deleted Windows is gay! I decided to bring this to your attention. Hopefully there is a way to fix the problem. If I am misunderstanding the situation please let me know. Thanks. --Canderson7 20:53, July 22, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for your sympathetic message on my talk page, although I'm not really worried about my edit. All I did was revert some vandalism. The idea of a page vanishing into thin air really bother me though, and I'd appreciate it very much if you could just check one more thing. Before the Windows is gay! move SecretIondon moved Windows Vista to Windows on Wheels [5], which has also been deleted. Is it possible that that's where the page vanished to. Thanks for your help. --Canderson7 21:17, July 22, 2005 (UTC)

There is now a short plot summary on the Porgy and Bess article, and the racism section has also been lengthened. Any other changes that you would like to see on the article? (Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Porgy and Bess/archive1) Cheers. --BaronLarf 01:49, July 25, 2005 (UTC)

Sorry about the comment.

= Realize that a link is not an article,

[edit]
but when something is listed as an "official" want in Wikapedia and it is already available elsewhere, why not leave a link instead of plagarizing the original article. That way the needed subject is covered without using excessive disk space and band width.-

See your point

[edit]

However, many of the "wants" are kind of weak subjects and don't really warrant much more than a link. I will refrain from the "link only" approach.

Thanks For The Warm Welcome

I really appreciated the message. It was wholly unneccessary to expend so much effort on my part. I'll see you around. -Ytookay 22:31, 27 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hello

[edit]

You left a comment on my page and if you get a chance could you do so again? I don't really have many friends, so it would be nice if I could talk with you. --HistoricalPisces 18:10, 28 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi

[edit]

Taken me forever to realise how to leave a message. Hope I've not messed it up. Just want to say thanks for formatting my article - I've read the guidelines but there's so much to take in at once!

History of South Carolina

[edit]

I think met your objections at History of South Carolina. Did I? Ready to support? Toothpaste 02:01, 31 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

[edit]

Thank you for your vote of support on my recent RfA. I was quite surprised by the amount of support I received, and wish to extend my thanks to you for taking the time to support my nomination for adminship. -- Longhair | Talk 12:02, 1 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I took the picture, so I own the writes. Sorry, I thought the GPL was listed as a valid image license, I can change it to the GFDL. --Msci 18:09, 1 August 2005 (UTC) User talk:msci[reply]

Don't drink soda

[edit]

When you deleted an article titled "Don't Drink Soda", you said: "i believe this was deleted before--vandalism, at any rate." I don't know who created this article, but it seems like Andrew Lin, the "Stop drinking soda"-vandal, who is the subject of an RfC. Aecis 23:45, 1 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Modified Whisper Campaign again

[edit]

I've modified whisper campaign again. If the article can't be balanced with an example many political sides, it is definitely a problem with npov (as examples are abundant in both arenas). Consider revising with your own example from another party before re-adding the deleted example. Sleepnomore 03:38, August 2, 2005 (UTC)

    • No problem. Thanks for not taking it as a personal attack or political jab. Just trying to keep neutral pov. I'll definitely look around for more information to add to the article when I get back from vacation. Sleepnomore 03:43, August 2, 2005 (UTC)

Appointment to the Order of Canada FAC

[edit]

Ok, I did some searching. The Seal of the Order of Canada can only be found on Government websites, mainly the website of the Canada Gazette. The medal pictures I found were from the website of the Veteran Affairs Canada, another government agency. Other photos with the presentation of the Order by the Governor General can only be found at her site. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 03:54, 3 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry man, I could only find photos that are either Crown Copyright or a more restrictive copyright. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 23:27, 5 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

User:ComCat RFC

[edit]

I've opened an RFC for User:ComCat for his bulk and often spurious (IMHO) VfD's. I encourage you to weigh in at Wikipedia:Requests for comment/ComCat. -- Kaszeta 03:26, 4 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
