Tuncay

The Telegraph, The Guardian, the BBC and ESPN all refer to him as "Tuncay Şanlı". In the first few pages of my Google search for "Tuncay", the only one to refer to him mononymously (other than his article here) was Soccerbase. If you're saying more sources refer to him just as "Tuncay", I'm honestly not seeing the same sources you are. – PeeJay 16:43, 22 July 2019 (UTC)

While the reports you link above do all give his full name of "Tuncay Şanlı" in the first instance, they do then go on to refer to him by just his first name of "Tuncay", as this is what he is generally known as.
See these Google News results: 1,510 results for "Tuncay" Middlesbrough -Şanlı, compared to 1,160 results for "Tuncay Şanlı" Middlesbrough; 2,060 results for "Tuncay" Stoke -Şanlı, compared to 1,630 results for "Tuncay Şanlı" Stoke; 21,400 results results for "Tuncay" Bursaspor -Şanlı, compared to 5,880 results for "Tuncay Şanlı" Bursaspor. Mattythewhite (talk) 17:05, 22 July 2019 (UTC)
That's just like us referring to Alan Shearer as just "Shearer" after the first mention though. Per Turkish name, Turkish people didn't really have surnames until 1934, so it would stand to reason that it is a custom in Turkey to refer to someone predominantly by their first name. The same applies to Tugay Kerimoğlu, Alpay Özalan, Nihat Kahveci, İlhan Mansız and Emre Belözoğlu. Also, Wales could be considered to have come third at Euro 2016 in the same way that Germany and Portugal were considered to have come third at Euro 2012 or Russia and Turkey were at Euro 2008. Just because UEFA's policy about awarding medals has changed doesn't mean those teams should be considered any less third-place finishers than the teams before or after that policy. Whereas they used to have a third-place play-off, now they just consider both losing semi-finalists to have come third. – PeeJay 18:02, 22 July 2019 (UTC)
Based on the above, don't you think it would be better to revert the Tuncay page move and open it up to an RM discussion? – PeeJay 10:43, 23 July 2019 (UTC)

Mariano

I don't know why you are calling my edit on Mariano Diaz "unsourced" as there is nothing i need to source. How am I supposed to source fixing a few grammar fixes? Do you want me to include a reference for fixing grammar? Matthewishere0 20:28, 23 July 2019 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Matthewishere0 (talkcontribs)

The addition of "He made 3 appearances in the 2018–19 season before returning to Real Madrid." was not a "grammar fix". Mattythewhite (talk) 20:34, 23 July 2019 (UTC)

User:BPL2007

From what I've noticed on the talk page, I would think the user would know better about the editorial behaviour to Chelsea related articles and some other football players. Iggy (Swan) 21:21, 25 July 2019 (UTC)

Everton squad template

Hi Matty, source for Lössl No. 49 shirt was on Twitter - here JMHamo (talk) 23:21, 25 July 2019 (UTC)

It hasn't been confirmed by his club yet. For all we know, that may have been a one-off for a friendly. Mattythewhite (talk) 23:22, 25 July 2019 (UTC)

Sancho Jadon

Hello. Why are you not accepting a change on Jadon Sancho? The award from GOAL is official, many players have these awards and are listed on the page.

My understanding is that we only include awards from official footballing bodies, e.g. FIFA, UEFA, Premier League etc, rather than websites, magazines etc. Mattythewhite (talk) 12:08, 26 July 2019 (UTC)

Daniel James

The two times I've noticed the copvio images, I've checked the free image tool both times, the latter has the image used by the other Wikipedia which was using the image. However, I was a bit foolish as I should have checked the images of the player first.[1] I was confident that the image was a free one until I found out a few minutes later (after the revert) that this is from a different website. Iggy (Swan) 18:04, 27 July 2019 (UTC)

I saw that edit on Paul Pogba's article earlier and thought it might actually be a useful link to help avoid confusion between Guinea, Guinea-Bissau and Equatorial Guinea, since the demonyms are similar. I think it says later that Pogba's brothers play for the Guinea national football team, so that might give greater weight to the WP:OVERLINK argument, but I do think it's useful here. – PeeJay 18:43, 29 July 2019 (UTC)

Might be an idea, I won't revert if you restore it. Mattythewhite (talk) 20:00, 29 July 2019 (UTC)

Trent-Alexndr Arnold [sic]

Hello. Why don't you accept my apologies with Trent Alexander Arnold? The record defenders on assists in the Premier League is a reward, the player handed it. On one of the 2 sites that were in the quote, there is a photo with this award.

It may be an achievement, but it isn't a formal award or honour. Mattythewhite (talk) 20:50, 29 July 2019 (UTC)
The award was given by the English Premier League, can it be included on the player's page?Or only in the record?
What's the name of the award? None of the sources you cite refer to any award. Mattythewhite (talk) 21:08, 29 July 2019 (UTC)
I do not know the names, but the prize was awarded for the record. Photo awards at sources present.
Which photo? Mattythewhite (talk) 21:39, 29 July 2019 (UTC)
https://img-s-msn-com.akamaized.net/tenant/amp/entityid/AAC4Ybs.img?h=245&w=300&m=6&q=60&o=f&l=f&x=1634&y=768
It could be something Liverpool did for him? I can't see anything to suggest that the Premier League have an award for defenders with most assists. Mattythewhite (talk) 22:24, 29 July 2019 (UTC)
Apparently so. So, do not change the player page?

Ryan Giggs

You reverted my edit, fair enough, but your summary made no sense to me. "Comma shouldn't be part of wikilink"; what? I removed the comma but nothing else..? Remagoxer (talk) 08:42, 30 July 2019 (UTC) I understand now and will fix it, my mistake! Remagoxer (talk) 09:16, 30 July 2019 (UTC)

I've added a space after your recent edit, I presume that's what you were going for? Mattythewhite (talk) 13:06, 30 July 2019 (UTC)

Stuart Pearce

Hi Matty. The citation I need is from my own eyes as a Warrington fan. Stuart is often at games home & away, is identified on Sky Sports as a fan. I would appreciate it if you put my edit back up. Thanks Mark Zebbiedaddy (talk) 15:41, 1 August 2019 (UTC)

Original research is not acceptable; content needs to be verifiable. Mattythewhite (talk) 15:45, 1 August 2019 (UTC)
Would you like me to take a photo of him next time he parks next to me? Zebbiedaddy (talk) 15:48, 1 August 2019 (UTC)
No, that would be a bit weird. Mattythewhite (talk) 15:50, 1 August 2019 (UTC)
Exactly. So I don't see the problem
Content, especially that relating to living people, should be verified by reliable sources, and not by original research, i.e. one's own personal knowledge. Hence the problem, because the content you added falls into the latter category. Mattythewhite (talk) 15:54, 1 August 2019 (UTC)

Such a shame that when there's so much misinformation on Wikipedia, you feel the need to remove harmless, informative & interesting information.

Random own goals may not be intrinsically notable, but for an editor to claim they’re fixing a typo when they’re actually deleting sourced content is pretty objectionable. Also, I would say that own goal is pretty notable, at least as much so as anything else he did for Fulham. – PeeJay 23:35, 1 August 2019 (UTC)

Leroy Sane

Hey. Leroy Sana was included in the final bid for the 2017 Conference Cup. But the player missed the tournament due to injury. However, he was not removed from the official application. Reliable sources for citation

Hi is TalkSport considered as reliable source to use for a transfer being official, someone used in on the 2019-20 Leicester City F.C. season page for the Maguire transfer? Jimmy Skitz's Answer Machine 15:17, 2 August 2019 (UTC)

I would say it probably is, generally speaking, but I wouldn't use it to override other outlets with regards transfers, as happened at the article you've linked. Mattythewhite (talk) 16:32, 2 August 2019 (UTC)

Dominic Raab

Hi I updated Dominic Raabs page stating that by virtue of his appointment as First Secretary of State, he is de facto Deputy Prime Minister to Boris Johnson. You changed this and I'd like to put it back. Jamesjonespolitics (talk) 21:55, 2 August 2019 (UTC)

Can you support this claim with reliable sources? Mattythewhite (talk) 22:08, 2 August 2019 (UTC)

Keylor Navas

I know for sure that Navas was the best player in the UNCAF Cup 2009, but I did not find sources confirming this. If you write in Google "The best player of the UNCAF Cup 2009," he will show that it is Navas. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 176.214.128.4 (talk) 20:09, 3 August 2019 (UTC)

Knowing something "for sure" is not sufficient, see WP:OR. Content needs to be verifiable by reliable sources. Mattythewhite (talk) 20:16, 3 August 2019 (UTC)

Phil Foden

About Phil Foden, everybody knows he won FA Cup. There's so many sources out there prove that it existed. GiofanniRahman (talk) 01:39, 30 July 2019 (UTC)

Perhaps you could use some of those sources next time? Mattythewhite (talk) 12:34, 30 July 2019 (UTC)
@GiofanniRahman: I didn't know and I am a football fan. You can't consider it common knowledge. See WP:VERIFY. Robby.is.on (talk) 12:46, 30 July 2019 (UTC)

Can someone just fix the Phil Foden page? The statistics are on the page already, he played three FA Cup games and scored three games, so please update it. Evidence is already on the page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.184.102.163 (talk) 15:04, 31 July 2019 (UTC)

That doesn't prove anything. Mattythewhite (talk) 15:43, 31 July 2019 (UTC)
FA Cup medal is given to players declared for the finals. Foden was not declared — Preceding unsigned comment added by 176.214.128.4 (talk) 20:04, 3 August 2019 (UTC)
Wrong. Both clubs in the final receives 40 medals each, per the competition's rules. Mattythewhite (talk) 20:15, 3 August 2019 (UTC)
Why is it wrong? I mean, in order to get a medal, one must be declared in the final — Preceding unsigned comment added by 176.214.128.4 (talk) 20:37, 3 August 2019 (UTC)
Did you bother reading the second sentence? Mattythewhite (talk) 20:39, 3 August 2019 (UTC)

EFL Championship

Hello, making my debut on Wikipedia. Thanks for your edit. I added a link to the BBC match report in the change box. Was this the incorrect place for links? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bullioner (talkcontribs) 22:19, 2 August 2019 (UTC)

References should be placed in the body of the article, beside the content it is citing. See H:FOOT for guidance. Mattythewhite (talk) 17:44, 4 August 2019 (UTC)

Riyad Mahrez

you are right, It should be placed source, but if he considered a winner of the title, although he was not in the squad. Thank you. Hichem algerino (talk) 21:03, 4 August 2019 (UTC)

How do you know that he is "considered a winner of the title"? Mattythewhite (talk) 19:04, 4 August 2019 (UTC)
Because he is a player in the team and was present in the stadium while receiving the title, But my question is he a winner or not although he was not in the squad. Hichem algerino (talk) 21:03, 4 August 2019 (UTC)
No, I don't think what you've detailed above is sufficient. Mattythewhite (talk) 19:20, 4 August 2019 (UTC)

Messi

Hello, why canceled my edits on Messi on the page of his career achievements? I did everything right — Preceding unsigned comment added by 176.214.128.4 (talk) 08:29, 4 August 2019 (UTC)

Because many of them aren't notable, e.g. pre-season tournaments, and many of them are unsourced. Mattythewhite (talk) 17:19, 4 August 2019 (UTC)
Firstly, on the Ronaldo page pre-season tournaments are indicated, secondly, I also indicated individual awards (with sources). And why did you remove awards even from official organizations? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 176.214.128.4 (talk) 22:08, 4 August 2019 (UTC)

User:DJDan18

Hi Matty, I've noticed that you have warned this user about editing Harry Maguire's Man Utd shirt number, he has once again done this without any official confirmation or reference. Matthew Chappell (talk) 15:31, 5 August 2019 (UTC)

Bury

Hello, Matty. Thanks for reverting the latest vandalism. I recently tried to have some kind of protection put onto the article, preferably pending change review given that I'm a reviewer myself but the request was refused. Is there any way we can protect it against IPs at least, if not actual members, while the current financial crisis is ongoing? Having said that, the culmination of the crisis will be the club folding and a new one starting up in the Northern Premier League or wherever (my belief based on inside information received). All the best. No Great Shaker (talk) 22:27, 5 August 2019 (UTC)

The last unconstructive edit before the one I recently reverted was on 1 August, so I don't think there's been enough activity to justify semi-protection. I hadn't realised the club was in quite so much trouble, I hope it doesn't have to come to that. Mattythewhite (talk) 01:09, 6 August 2019 (UTC)
Yes, you're right. It does seem that many people are watching it so the rubbish is quickly ejected. I hope I'm wrong about the club's situation but everything I've heard sounds ominous. We shall see. No Great Shaker (talk) 09:07, 6 August 2019 (UTC)

Álvaro Giménez

Hi Matty, could you please semi-protect Álvaro Giménez, maybe a revert is needed too. Thanks, JMHamo (talk) 17:53, 6 August 2019 (UTC)

Beaten to it. The transfer still needs adding to the prose with a source, though. Mattythewhite (talk) 18:42, 6 August 2019 (UTC)

Changes on İlkay Gündoğan

Hey, can you please explain what was wrong in my edit on İlkay Gündoğan? The stats of the player are wrong. He played 31 EPL games in 2018-19 season and also had 8 appearences in Champions League, which hasn't been updated on the page. I tried to do that twice however both of the times, my edit got reverted. Is it possible If I can know what thing am I doing wrong here? Will be very thankful to you!

(Also, I did make a mistake there, sorry for that. The player played 31 games not 32 league games...) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hassan Ashas (talkcontribs) 17:51, 6 August 2019 (UTC)

You didn't update the date above the table or the total cell in the season row. Mattythewhite (talk) 18:37, 6 August 2019 (UTC)
@Mattythewhite The date above the table was/is already updated to August 4 2019 and as for the season row, yes I didn't do that in my first edit but did make sure to correct those in the second edit which you undid. Hassan Ashas (talk) 13:58, 7 August 2019 (UTC)
Sorry, the date had indeed already been updated. I've now updated the figures in full. Mattythewhite (talk) 16:53, 7 August 2019 (UTC)

David Luiz

Hi Matty, wondering if you could help, we've got two users adding blatant vandalism about David Luiz going to Arsenal, without a reference. Just wondering if you could help in any way.. Cheers. Matthew Chappell (talk) 14:15, 8 August 2019 (UTC)

We've got a user: DomSaunders who is continuously adding that he has signed for Arsenal. I've warned him that this is blatant vandalism without a source. Matthew Chappell (talk) 14:21, 8 August 2019 (UTC)

@Matthew Chappell: Starting with a level 3 warning template as you did on the user's Talk page is WP:BITEy. Start with a level 1 warning template or a friendly message of your own. I see no reason to assume vandalism (WP:AGF), they might simply be unaware that we cannot update a page without official confirmation. Robby.is.on (talk) 14:34, 8 August 2019 (UTC)

Chelsea F.C. Other players under contract

I just wanted to know why what I did was so wrong. These players weren’t on the first team or youth team squads (excluding Jamal Blackman) and it would be useful to give people some indication that these players are still at the club and haven’t been taken out on loan, which can easily go down unnoticed for a team like Chelsea. Steam n Whistle (talk) 18:31, 11 August 2019 (UTC)

I explained quite clearly what the problem is on your talk page, that being that the content you are adding is unsourced. Mattythewhite (talk) 18:32, 11 August 2019 (UTC)

people would want to know about him, you’re bare ignorant YungSxmeer (talk) 23:32, 14 August 2019 (UTC)

Why don't you make a page on him, then? Mattythewhite (talk) 23:40, 14 August 2019 (UTC)

i don’t know how to, you’ve been doing this for a long time I assume considering how many things you’ve edited so I asked you YungSxmeer (talk) 23:51, 14 August 2019 (UTC)

That's fair enough, but when requesting help from other editors it's best not to make demands like "Make a page on him". It got my back up, as I suspect it would with most editors. Mattythewhite (talk) 13:41, 16 August 2019 (UTC)

Liga Champions

Hi Matthew. Which players receive medals of the winner of the Champions League, players who are declared for the final, or players of lists A and B? If the first, then how did Luca Zidane get the medal? He was not announced for the final. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 176.59.53.216 (talk) 09:40, 16 August 2019 (UTC)

Depends if we have sources to confirm that the player won the competition. Mattythewhite (talk) 13:33, 16 August 2019 (UTC)
Matthew, I found information that confirms that Coutinho received the Champions League silver medal 2017-18

Probably, I'm notorious around these parts. I don't think adding superfluous, repeated wikilinks makes the page look better. Mattythewhite (talk) 23:20, 16 August 2019 (UTC)
Put simply, we agree to disagree. The unfortunate thing for me is that someone gave you power on this website so I might as well accept your judgement at face value and move on instead of arguing a point of personal preference with no recourse. — Preceding unsigned comment added by EdmondCA (talkcontribs) 23:27, 16 August 2019 (UTC)

Did you even bother to compare the revisions before hitting undo? The article was quite messy and lacking some stats. There really is no need to list random trials or assists, so I cleaned it up a bit as well. Same goes for multiple refs stating the same. Fewer characters doesn't mean a poorer article. Tommi.1988 20:46, 22 August 2019 (UTC)

Yes, I did, and I saw that you removed multiple references, including those for the height and for stats. Mattythewhite (talk) 20:47, 22 August 2019 (UTC)

Great! Mattythewhite (talk) 15:38, 24 August 2019 (UTC)

The way you cite,

I noticed on Hugo Lloris that you are changing publisher or work to website, that seems to go against the documentation at {{Citation}}. The example there for URL's from the web insist on using the element work to be inline with; |work=BBC Sport and a number of other admins have told me to change publisher to work in the past. I had to do that before to help pass an article to GA, and to get History of Tottenham Hotspur F.C. to FA. so I am really curious why you are changing it all to be different. Govvy (talk) 13:34, 24 August 2019 (UTC)

I'm not sure how it goes against the documentation you link to? Mattythewhite (talk) 15:40, 24 August 2019 (UTC)
#8 TemplateData, work is the primary element, with secondary elements to match of that parameter. #4 Examples#Web I am just following that... Using =work for my primary point for BBC Sport, Sky Sports, even the newspapers. So I am not sure how your changes work. Govvy (talk) 16:03, 24 August 2019 (UTC)
I changed the above to |website=, which has the same output as |work=. Per {{Cite web}}, the former appears to be preferred. So my edit is in line with what you're saying, unless I'm missing something? Mattythewhite (talk) 16:10, 24 August 2019 (UTC)

Ok, I can understand why you keep locking this page, but if you are going to please don't be locking it for a year. That is ridiculously way too much time and you, nor does anyone, bother to make the edits it needs for improvement. I'm not trying to sound rude in my request, but just trying to get my point across. 2601:8C:C201:A2CF:D44A:9BA2:B5:A85 (talk) 01:56, 23 August 2019 (UTC)

First of all, the article isn't fully protected (only admins can edit), it's semi-protected (unregistered users can't edit). It's been protected for such a long time because of long-term vandalism that was taking place there. Mattythewhite (talk) 10:26, 23 August 2019 (UTC)\

IP nuisance

Hello there, and sorry to bother you again,

not telling you anything new, but this IP with which you have (so to speak) interacted many times in the recent past (see here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:185.6.33.83) continues to not add any updates whatsoever to stats. Much more seriously, in Sergio Escudero (footballer, born 1989), even though both BDFUTBOL.com and SOCCERWAY.com say he played nine matches for Getafe in the 2012/13 season, they continue to say "talk to the hand" and write ten.

Attentively --193.137.135.2 (talk) 07:50, 28 August 2019 (UTC)

I've warned them after their latest incomplete update. Mattythewhite (talk) 17:15, 28 August 2019 (UTC)

Thanks! But they continue at it, serious example at Pablo Sarabia, SOCCERWAY gives him 12 goals in the 2018/19 season, and the reference #13 in the prose also attests to that. BDFUTBOL is quite reliable as we all know, but here they have made a mistake (someone else credited with the goal, or it was an own goal).

Suggestions? --193.137.135.2 (talk) 12:09, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

Blocked for one week. Mattythewhite (talk) 12:15, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

Found this very reliable source (google searched for several minutes for more, but got tired; and maybe this one is enough to "lend" more strength), also gives Mr. Sarabia 12 goles as well as the described in the prose 13 assists (please see here https://www.espn.com/soccer/stats/_/league/ESP.1/season/2018). --81.193.141.118 (talk) 13:42, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

Alisson Becker

Hi there! Well, when a team wins a trophy, also all its members do too even if a player don't play or isn't in the matchday squad because of injury. According to soccer databases, Becker has won the Super Cup even if he isn't played that day. It's always been that way, that's why i made the edit. About wikis, for example french wikipedia follows it. But I see on en.wiki doesn't add that tittles, i don't know if there is a consensus about it here, but if you can cite it, i will love to see it. But thanks for your comment in the edit summary. Best regards.--Miaow 17:03, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

Your statement re players winning a trophy if they weren't involved isn't *necessarily* correct. Each competition has has its own rules and regulations that dictate the allocation of medals. Do we know what the case is with the UEFA Super Cup? Btw, you should be aware that Transfermarkt is not a reliable source and is avoided like the plague on football pages, and Soccerway, while generally reliable, are rather lenient with that they included in their honours sections. Thanks. Although I do have to say Soccerway shows the player has being a part of Mohun Bagan A.C., and you did remove/revert some valid expatriate categories. --81.193.141.118 (talk) 01:13, 1 September 2019 (UTC)
I reverted to what looked to be the last clean version, and that content was unsourced. Mattythewhite (talk) 01:17, 1 September 2019 (UTC)

Risking being discovered by the stalker (AGAIN, this could lead to them editing in an article they had zero interest in working on previously, only when i edit in X or Y page is this person interested), i came "out of hiding" for this one and reinstated the box and the categories, also adding the pertinent sourced wording. Reading Soccerway and his Spanish WP entry (sourced) i never doubted he plays/played for this Indian ballclub, i was only concerned by the sickening vandalism in name of club/player/stats, nothing else.

Infobox timestamps

In relation to the message left on my talk page, firstly if you had looked you would have seen I didn't just turn up here today, so I didn't need the standard welcome message. Secondly having looked through my previous edits (I had to go back through each one to find which one was the problem which to me suggests this isn't a recurring issue), I guess you must be referring to my edit at Leigh Griffiths. I'll admit it that I done all that editing to the page but forgot one minor thing, but sometimes when that happens and you notice it, you can just say "Oh that timestamp hasn't been changed, I'll just fix it myself." Or you can check to see if the user does this all the time and if not you just write it off as a mistake. Not everything needs pointed out to people. Thank you. Davinson Sanchez clarification

Sorry Matt, I forgot to put what was I referencing when I wrote here in june 22th the following:

"Hello, man

A tweet/video of the player, Davinson Sanchez himself, mentioning counts as a valid source? https://twitter.com/Spurs_ES/status/1050144442160742401?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1050144442160742401&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fligadeportiva.com%2Fdavinson-sanchez-confeso-porque-no-debuto-con-america-de-cali%2F"

I was talking about the correction you made reference in my talk page about the player Davinson Sanchez, when I wrote he was part of the youth team of America de Cali and Atletico Nacional in Colombia, as he says in the video. But you undid my changes as it wasn't properly cited. Thank you very much. Estepirobo(talk) 2 September 2019. —Preceding undated comment added 04:12, 3 September 2019 (UTC)

Grammatical doubt

Take this sentence for example: "Nadal then returned to his native Spain, to enjoy retirement and paella". Notice the ommission of "country" (instead of writing "native country (of) Spain"). I suppose the former is 100% correct, is it not?

With that in mind, isn't it equally correct to write (another example) "Sergi Roberto finished his youth career at local FC Barcelona", instead of "...youth career at local club FC Barcelona". I remember writing the former in several articles, and at least once it was not all that well accepted by an English-speaking user.

One has to be completely sure when inserting material to an encyclopedia, in this case from a grammatical standpoint, and that is why I come to you for "enlightment". If striving to be one of the best there is, its contents must be in total accordance :)

Let's continue to improve this rain or shine, thanks in advance --81.193.141.118 (talk) 18:24, 5 September 2019 (UTC)

I would say the former is fine, but would certainly include club in the latter. Mattythewhite (talk) 18:32, 5 September 2019 (UTC)

Thanks! And what would you say is the reason for this different approach (both "country" and "club" are nouns, but one is OK to render implicit whereas the other is not)? A bit confusing for a non-native... --81.193.141.118 (talk) 18:57, 11 September 2019 (UTC)

Nicky Marker

Hi, I just came across your last edit in Nicky Markers article. You are right claiming that he is not "well known" for the injury he caused on Ben Thornley. Is was also improper to place this information in the first paragraph of the lemma. But erasing it without replace, just because it was misplaced and improperly presented, is in my opinion not quite the Wikipedian manner of contribution. You could easily have just altered it: totally hiding a fact shouldn't be preferred versus poorly describing it. I'm sure that you as an administrator are fully aware of this. If you take a look on the talk page of the lemma, you can see that I might have the guilt of having inspired the anonyme user to make this change. I still fully support my former opinion and believe that this incidence has to be mentioned in Marker's lemma, as it already is in Thornley's. Not only did it have a significant impact to the victim, by ruining the career of a great talent, but also led finally to a legal fight between the two opposite sides. Don't you think it deserves to be mentioned in some way? --MedMan (talk) 04:05, 18 September 2019 (UTC)

PenguinsElite

I see that you've been involved with the block of many socks of PenguinsElite as I think that you've been confident about the edit patterns made by the socks. I have given a description on whether to do a WP:BAN on the user for not obeying the WP:SOCK rule. The discussion can be found at "Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard#WP:CBAN for PenguinsElite". Iggy (Swan) 21:41, 20 September 2019 (UTC)

Nice description, too. So the conclusion is that that they are effectively site banned already, as per WP:3X. Mattythewhite (talk) 22:44, 20 September 2019 (UTC)

User:Nzol12

Could you please block Nzol12 (talk · contribs) for block evasion (he's clearly Martimc123 (talk · contribs))? He re-uploaded the picture you deleted (File:João Félix.png) to Commons and has continued laundering licenses. SLBedit (talk) 11:38, 1 September 2019 (UTC)

He's also adding a copyvio to João Cancelo (just another zoom and crop). SLBedit (talk) 12:50, 1 September 2019 (UTC)

im not user:Martimc123 this images have the right license because im the author and i ask you to not blocking me and User:SLBedit doesn't have proof that im that user its just an accusation without proves. Nzol12 (talk) 12:55, 1 September 2019 (UTC)

Can you provide evidence that you are the author of this work? If so, please follow the instructions given at commons:File:Jcancelo.jpg in the warning box. Mattythewhite (talk) 15:16, 1 September 2019 (UTC)

SLBedit (talk) 19:16, 2 September 2019 (UTC)

This is getting tiresome. Someone (maybe Nzol12) registered an account at football.fandom.com (https://football.fandom.com/wiki/User:Team69Roll) and then uploaded the very same images that had been uploaded to Commons by Nzol12. Just check the license laundering (then removed by Fandom's User:SluzbowiKoledzy13): https://football.fandom.com/wiki/File:Jcancelo.jpg?oldid=258094 (you can even see the poor cropping at the bottom on this one), https://football.fandom.com/wiki/File:CasaT-SFX1.jpg?oldid=258096, https://football.fandom.com/wiki/File:PA7UEFA.jpg?oldid=258098. Pathetic. SLBedit (talk) 02:32, 3 September 2019 (UTC)

I think it's more than likely that the two are the same individual. Thankfully, I found the original versions of the images and they've been deleted from Commons. Mattythewhite (talk) 11:51, 3 September 2019 (UTC)
The sockpuppets won't stop adding cropped copyrighted images to João Félix. SLBedit (talk) 23:15, 10 September 2019 (UTC)
Another sock, Nxlo03qda (talk · contribs), added another copyright-infringing image to the article (now deleted from commons). I have requested extended protection to the article. SLBedit (talk) 15:31, 18 September 2019 (UTC)

Could you please warn Nxlo03qda to stop the disrupting editing at João Félix? SLBedit (talk) 23:29, 22 September 2019 (UTC)

Helping out

I'm as dumb as they come regarding these, so I come to you for assistance,

can you please arrange the statistical charts of José Sá and Bruno Gaspar? Greek user(s) with no clue consistently overlink the name of competitions, but that's not the most serious issue; in Mr. Sá, they (he/she?) erroneously wrote the 2011/12 season was spent in the LigaPro when it was not, it was spent in the Portuguese Second Division (third tier) - in fact, they also wrote that for FC Porto B, when in fact the team NEVER competed in the third tier after its recreation!

In Mr. Gaspar, they/he/she only wrote the seasons for Vitória S.C. B and forgot all regarding the first team. In Portugal, reserve sides are not allowed to compete in the Primeira Liga, so chart is as wrong as can be!

Attentively, thanks in advance --193.137.135.2 (talk) 09:44, 23 September 2019 (UTC)

If you can't/won't do anything, can you please advise me on what to do (I think i never behaved unbecomingly towards you, but if you think so can you please point it out)? --81.193.141.118 (talk) 00:25, 24 September 2019 (UTC)

I would just revert them, or if it becomes too frequent raise it at WT:FOOTY. Mattythewhite (talk) 22:49, 24 September 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for the reply. I see what you mean, but the fact is that charts as the ones i mention are often updated so you know it's done in good faith, it's just a matter of unscrambling them. No worries, i'll ask elsewhere, cheers --81.193.141.118 (talk) 23:27, 24 September 2019 (UTC)

Divyali

Hi, I think you've made a mistake. I received an alert saying that I had made an edit on Walter John Downes' article but I have never even visited his article on Wikipedia. I did, however, recently(not sure of the date or time) made an edit on Menaka Guruswamy's article, wherein the year in which she had helped decriminalize homosexuality in India was wrong. As I had been researching about her for a project I noticed this error immediately. At the time i had no idea of the citation rules when it comes to making an edit on Wikipedia and did not link any sources to back my correction. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Divyali (talkcontribs) 13:46, 20 September 2019 (UTC)

Sevilla fan IP nuisance

As seen in Juan Soriano Oropesa, same old same old... When is a new block going to be implemented?

Attentively --81.193.141.118 (talk) 02:31, 26 September 2019 (UTC)

My persistence paid off! After several messages to User:Mega60 (veteran Spanish user, does not speak a lick of English (and that's not me belittling him, he admitted it to me) but is a great asset for this encyclopedia regarding Spanish football, in my humble opinion), they found a reliable source (Marca is one, no?) for the subject's Tercera División stats with Valencia CF Mestalla; thus, we will be able to take the pertinent category "from hiding".

I will now ask a fellow user to retrieve said source to Mr. Guaita's statistical chart, as I am glaringly incapable of doing it myself. Attentively --81.193.141.118 (talk) 19:27, 26 September 2019 (UTC)

Amy Jo Johnson

Can you somehow fix Amy Jo Johnson’s page? I have no idea what I did but I screwed it up! Mapd82 (talk) 01:29, 28 September 2019 (UTC)

It's been fixed by another editor. What change were you trying to make? Mattythewhite (talk) 15:01, 28 September 2019 (UTC)

Bits and pieces

1 - Sevilla IP nuisance, again taking Juan Soriano Oropesa as an example: they continue at it, that warning of yours resulted in nothing!

2 - Vicente Guaita, the user I asked to retrieve the ref to his chart, :@Robby.is.on:, says he cannot read the print in the source (please see here https://issuu.com/xaba74/docs/26_gu__a_marca_de_la_liga_2017-2018, Getafe's squad - where he played at the time - is in page 116 so you'll need to do some scrolling), thus he did not "acted upon". :@Mega60:, who sent that link to my talk, says it reads Mr. Guaita as having played 28 matches in the 2007–08 Tercera División; can you be a sport and add it yourself, please?

Attentively, thanks in advance --193.137.135.2 (talk) 09:58, 30 September 2019 (UTC)

Robby took care of (most of) it, many thanks to him! Matty, do you think this will be enough to keep the stats and the category? --81.193.141.118 (talk) 20:14, 30 September 2019 (UTC)

1. Of course, but I'm not inclined to block without giving fair warning.
2. All looks good with Mr Guaita to me. Mattythewhite (talk) 22:40, 30 September 2019 (UTC)

Page move

Tried to move to António Oliveira (footballer, born 1961) to "António Conceição" but was not allowed, can you please accommodate?

Another one of :@Ortizesp:'s DOZENS if not HUNDREDS of unwarranted page moves (this eventually led to a topic ban if i'm not mistaken), this subject's most important surname is "Conceição" and they remove it!

Attentively, thanks in advance (by the way, should Mr. Ortizesp ask i'm not :@MYS77: editing anonymously, just another concerned editor regarding this matter) --81.193.141.118 (talk) 19:40, 3 October 2019 (UTC)

Shouldn't it be moved to Toni Conceição, as this seems to be what he's mostly known as? Mattythewhite (talk) 22:59, 3 October 2019 (UTC)

Sorry for the belated reply, went for a "post-dinner walk" yesterday. Yes, "Toni Conceição" would also be perfect. --193.137.135.2 (talk) 08:01, 4 October 2019 (UTC)

Took a chance ("chance" here meaning being tracked down by my "monitor"), changed it myself per your suggestion. Cheers! --193.137.135.2 (talk) 08:16, 4 October 2019 (UTC)

More bits and pieces

1 - Sevilla fan IP nuisance, again taking Juan Soriano Oropesa as an example. Time for a (bigger) block or still not?

IP hails from Spain, so maybe this is utterly useless because the person does not understand one word of what is being said to them (not even that they are being blocked for disruption);

2 - would you say this constitutes WP:OVERDETAIL (please see here https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Mart%C3%ADn_Montoya&diff=919749104&oldid=919737460)? I would! I see that both you and :@GiantSnowman: have had issues with :@Beeney xx: in the past, last message from Snowman specifically addresses this matter. Do note, Mr. Montoya did not do anything of relevance in that match (no goals, no serious injury, no debut), he merely PLAYED!

Attentively --81.193.141.118 (talk) 14:14, 6 October 2019 (UTC)

Yep, @Beeney xx: is a fan who doesn't understand what Wikipedia is meant to show, he treats it like a sports almanac. I'm concerned by their competence. GiantSnowman 09:09, 7 October 2019 (UTC)

Asking for your help

Hi Mattythewhite, I'm here to ask for your help in updating an outdated football related page, as you seem to focus on this area. I don't know if you edit women's football pages or Simple English Wikipedia but the Simple English page of the England women's national football team is quite outdated and your help in updating it would be much appreciated. If you have not edited Simple English Wikipedia before the relevant page can be found in the languages list on the left hand side of the England women's national football team page, just click on the Simple English link. Helper201 (talk) 23:14, 4 November 2019 (UTC)

Maybe with your mediation this harrassment will stop. Account or no account, i'm not allowed to insert his spell at Everton in the intro career summary, really "classy"...

Attentively, thanks in advance --Quite A Character (talk) 20:44, 5 November 2019 (UTC)

  • One of these days, maybe you'll tell me what changed in our wiki-relation. For the moment, the promise that my interactions here stop (sick and tired of wasting your time and, most importantly to me, MINE) and i redirect you to the talkpage of the user with whom i interacted, maybe they'll be fortunate enough to merit some paltry words in return (their page here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:CurtNeiMeng). If i'm being hysterical again (good odds on that), then i apologise (but since you always replied, and now that has stopped...).

Attentively --Quite A Character (talk) 01:40, 6 November 2019 (UTC)

Broken my promise [of not posting here anymore] just to tip you of the following: seems the stalker has either left WP or desisted in their ways, so from now on i'll only edit with the account, to avoid such misunderstandings in the future. --Quite A Character (talk) 09:24, 6 November 2019 (UTC)

I apologise for my lack of communication, I've not had the time or inclination to get involved in heavier editing recently, including getting involved in disputes. But here I would say that the content you included was notable the player being at a club at for over a year is worthy of mention in a bit further detail, not just in the opening sentence as his current club. Mattythewhite (talk) 12:46, 6 November 2019 (UTC)

Thank you so much for the reply, again me with my "cry me a river" approach :( I will show this to the users who reverted me, but again I leave the promise to not reinstate anything in Mr. Gomes' intro, burden is theirs now. --Quite A Character (talk) 13:43, 6 November 2019 (UTC)

Hi Matty, how are you?

I had this thought today and I can't seem to decide whether it's right or wrong... Being a national cup top goalscorer (just like the Copa del Rey or the FA Cup) but never playing in a WP:FPL is worth a page through WP:GNG? A clear example: Migue was the top goalscorer of the 2007/08 edition of the Copa del Rey, but never played in a FPL. Can he be notable through GNG?

Cheers, MYS77 22:52, 6 November 2019 (UTC)

It's possible, it depends on whether the level of coverage the subject has received is sufficient. Mattythewhite (talk) 23:57, 6 November 2019 (UTC)

Hi Matty!

How are you. I'm a somewhat regular contributor to the Eden Hazard page. I hope you don't mind my re-edit and I think I gave a sound reason. The performances tab should be related to goals/assists. Normally, with so many "honours" , its usually best to segregate it as is the case with other pages like the Ronaldo, Neymar, Messi pages for the sake of ease of editing for future purposes. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Exxcalibur808 (talkcontribs) 13:57, 12 November 2019 (UTC)

Ukraine national football team player names

Hi, Mattythewhite. I noticed you undid patronymic information that I added to the pages of Andriy Yarmolenko and Oleksandr Zinchenko (and possibly others), specifying on the latter that Transfermarkt is not a reliable source. Fair enough, but you should know that on their Wikipedia pages in NEARLY ALL OTHER languages (including their native Ukrainian Wikipedia), their patronyms are provided. I believe that, at least for the sake of consistency, the English Wikipedia should do the same. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.166.139.53 (talk) 12:58, 17 November 2019 (UTC)

Good evening,

I just want to ask why you keep removing Willian's top assist honour. I already put it in the performances section which is right because I saw that many footballers article put the top assist in their performances section. Thank you.

N'Golo Kante career statistics formatting

I know I'm new here, but wouldn't it make sense to have a '—' instead of the '0|0' in the other section. Considering how when a team has not competed in European competition, the section is dashed off instead of filled in with zeros. I was just curious as to why you undid my edit, and am curious to know if I did anything incorrectly. (MG000000000 (talk) 17:31, 23 November 2019 (UTC))

I explained why in my edit summary. He was eligible to play in that season's FA Community Shield, hence having the zeroes, as the em dash would imply there wasn't an available competition. Mattythewhite (talk) 17:33, 23 November 2019 (UTC)

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!
