Tuncay
The Telegraph, The Guardian, the BBC and ESPN all refer to him as "Tuncay Şanlı". In the first few pages of my Google search for "Tuncay", the only one to refer to him mononymously (other than his article here) was Soccerbase. If you're saying more sources refer to him just as "Tuncay", I'm honestly not seeing the same sources you are. – PeeJay 16:43, 22 July 2019 (UTC)
- While the reports you link above do all give his full name of "Tuncay Şanlı" in the first instance, they do then go on to refer to him by just his first name of "Tuncay", as this is what he is generally known as.
- See these Google News results: 1,510 results for "Tuncay" Middlesbrough -Şanlı, compared to 1,160 results for "Tuncay Şanlı" Middlesbrough; 2,060 results for "Tuncay" Stoke -Şanlı, compared to 1,630 results for "Tuncay Şanlı" Stoke; 21,400 results results for "Tuncay" Bursaspor -Şanlı, compared to 5,880 results for "Tuncay Şanlı" Bursaspor. - That's just like us referring to Alan Shearer as just "Shearer" after the first mention though. Per Turkish name, Turkish people didn't really have surnames until 1934, so it would stand to reason that it is a custom in Turkey to refer to someone predominantly by their first name. The same applies to Tugay Kerimoğlu, Alpay Özalan, Nihat Kahveci, İlhan Mansız and Emre Belözoğlu. Also, Wales could be considered to have come third at Euro 2016 in the same way that Germany and Portugal were considered to have come third at Euro 2012 or Russia and Turkey were at Euro 2008. Just because UEFA's policy about awarding medals has changed doesn't mean those teams should be considered any less third-place finishers than the teams before or after that policy. Whereas they used to have a third-place play-off, now they just consider both losing semi-finalists to have come third. – PeeJay 18:02, 22 July 2019 (UTC)
- Based on the above, don't you think it would be better to revert the Tuncay page move and open it up to an RM discussion? – PeeJay 10:43, 23 July 2019 (UTC)

Mariano
I don't know why you are calling my edit on Mariano Diaz "unsourced" as there is nothing i need to source. How am I supposed to source fixing a few grammar fixes? Do you want me to include a reference for fixing grammar? Matthewishere0 20:28, 23 July 2019 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Matthewishere0 (talk • contribs)

Sancho Jadon
Hello. Why are you not accepting a change on Jadon Sancho? The award from GOAL is official, many players have these awards and are listed on the page.
- My understanding is that we only include awards from official footballing bodies, e.g. FIFA, UEFA, Premier League etc, rather than websites, magazines etc. Mattythewhite (talk) 12:08, 26 July 2019 (UTC)

The two times I've noticed the copvio images, I've checked the free image tool both times, the latter has the image used by the other Wikipedia which was using the image. However, I was a bit foolish as I should have checked the images of the player first.[1] I was confident that the image was a free one until I found out a few minutes later (after the revert) that this is from a different website. I saw that edit on Paul Pogba's article earlier and thought it might actually be a useful link to help avoid confusion between Guinea, Guinea-Bissau and Equatorial Guinea, since the demonyms are similar. I think it says later that Pogba's brothers play for the Guinea national football team, so that might give greater weight to the WP:OVERLINK argument, but I do think it's useful here. – PeeJay 18:43, 29 July 2019 (UTC)

Trent-Alexndr Arnold [sic]
Hello. Why don't you accept my apologies with Trent Alexander Arnold? The record defenders on assists in the Premier League is a reward, the player handed it. On one of the 2 sites that were in the quote, there is a photo with this award.
- It may be an achievement, but it isn't a formal award or honour. Mattythewhite (talk) 20:50, 29 July 2019 (UTC)

Random own goals may not be intrinsically notable, but for an editor to claim they’re fixing a typo when they’re actually deleting sourced content is pretty objectionable. Bury
Hello, Matty. Thanks for reverting the latest vandalism. I recently tried to have some kind of protection put onto the article, preferably pending change review given that I'm a reviewer myself but the request was refused. Is there any way we can protect it against IPs at least, if not actual members, while the current financial crisis is ongoing? Having said that, the culmination of the crisis will be the club folding and a new one starting up in the Northern Premier League or wherever (my belief based on inside information received). All the best. No Great Shaker (talk) 22:27, 5 August 2019 (UTC)
- The last unconstructive edit before the one I recently reverted was on 1 August, so I don't think there's been enough activity to justify semi-protection. I hadn't realised the club was in quite so much trouble, I hope it doesn't have to come to that. Mattythewhite (talk) 01:09, 6 August 2019 (UTC)
- Yes, you're right. It does seem that many people are watching it so the rubbish is quickly ejected. I hope I'm wrong about the club's situation but everything I've heard sounds ominous. We shall see. No Great Shaker (talk) 09:07, 6 August 2019 (UTC)

These players weren’t on the first team or youth team squads (excluding Jamal Blackman) and it would be useful to give people some indication that these players are still at the club and haven’t been taken out on loan, which can easily go down unnoticed for a team like Chelsea. - I explained quite clearly what the problem is on your talk page, that being that the content you are adding is unsourced. Mattythewhite (talk) 18:32, 11 August 2019 (UTC)

Did you even bother to compare the revisions before hitting undo? The article was quite messy and lacking some stats. There really is no need to list random trials or assists, so I cleaned it up a bit as well. Same goes for multiple refs stating the same. Fewer characters doesn't mean a poorer article. The way you cite,
I noticed on Hugo Lloris that you are changing publisher or work to website, that seems to go against the documentation at {{Citation}}. The example there for URL's from the web insist on using the element work to be inline with; |work=BBC Sport
and a number of other admins have told me to change publisher to work in the past. I had to do that before to help pass an article to GA, and to get History of Tottenham Hotspur F.C. to FA. so I am really curious why you are changing it all to be different. Govvy (talk) 13:34, 24 August 2019 (UTC)

IP nuisance
Hello there, and sorry to bother you again,
not telling you anything new, but this IP with which you have (so to speak) interacted many times in the recent past (see here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:185.6.33.83) continues to not add any updates whatsoever to stats. Much more seriously, in Sergio Escudero (footballer, born 1989), even though both BDFUTBOL.com and SOCCERWAY.com say he played nine matches for Getafe in the 2012/13 season, they continue to say "talk to the hand" and write ten.
Attentively --193.137.135.2 (talk) 07:50, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
- I've warned them after their latest incomplete update. Mattythewhite (talk) 17:15, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
Thanks! But they continue at it, serious example at Pablo Sarabia, SOCCERWAY gives him 12 goals in the 2018/19 season, and the reference #13 in the prose also attests to that. BDFUTBOL is quite reliable as we all know, but here they have made a mistake (someone else credited with the goal, or it was an own goal).
Suggestions? --193.137.135.2 (talk) 12:09, 30 August 2019 (UTC)
- Blocked for one week. Mattythewhite (talk) 12:15, 30 August 2019 (UTC)
Found this very reliable source (google searched for several minutes for more, but got tired; and maybe this one is enough to "lend" more strength), also gives Mr. Sarabia 12 goles as well as the described in the prose 13 assists (please see here https://www.espn.com/soccer/stats/_/league/ESP.1/season/2018). --81.193.141.118 (talk) 13:42, 30 August 2019 (UTC)
Alisson Becker
Hi there! Well, when a team wins a trophy, also all its members do too even if a player don't play or isn't in the matchday squad because of injury. According to soccer databases, Becker has won the Super Cup even if he isn't played that day. It's always been that way, that's why i made the edit. About wikis, for example french wikipedia follows it. But I see on en.wiki doesn't add that tittles, i don't know if there is a consensus about it here, but if you can cite it, i will love to see it. But thanks for your comment in the edit summary. Best regards.--Miaow 17:03, 30 August 2019 (UTC)
- Your statement re players winning a trophy if they weren't involved isn't *necessarily* correct. Each competition has has its own rules and regulations that dictate the allocation of medals. Do we know what the case is with the UEFA Super Cup? Btw, you should be aware that Transfermarkt is not a reliable source and is avoided like the plague on football pages, and Soccerway, while generally reliable, are rather lenient with that they included in their honours sections. Risking being discovered by the stalker (AGAIN, this could lead to them editing in an article they had zero interest in working on previously, only when i edit in X or Y page is this person interested), i came "out of hiding" for this one and reinstated the box and the categories, also adding the pertinent sourced wording. Reading Soccerway and his Spanish WP entry (sourced) i never doubted he plays/played for this Indian ballclub, i was only concerned by the sickening vandalism in name of club/player/stats, nothing else.

Infobox timestamps
In relation to the message left on my talk page, firstly if you had looked you would have seen I didn't just turn up here today, so I didn't need the standard welcome message. Secondly having looked through my previous edits (I had to go back through each one to find which one was the problem which to me suggests this isn't a recurring issue), I guess you must be referring to my edit at Leigh Griffiths. I'll admit it that I done all that editing to the page but forgot one minor thing, but sometimes when that happens and you notice it, you can just say "Oh that timestamp hasn't been changed, I'll just fix it myself." Or you can check to see if the user does this all the time and if not you just write it off as a mistake. Not everything needs pointed out to people. Thank you. Sorry Matt, I forgot to put what was I referencing when I wrote here in june 22th the following:
"Hello, man
A tweet/video of the player, Davinson Sanchez himself, mentioning counts as a valid source? https://twitter.com/Spurs_ES/status/1050144442160742401?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1050144442160742401&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fligadeportiva.com%2Fdavinson-sanchez-confeso-porque-no-debuto-con-america-de-cali%2F"

Grammatical doubt
Take this sentence for example: "Nadal then returned to his native Spain, to enjoy retirement and paella". Notice the ommission of "country" (instead of writing "native country (of) Spain"). I suppose the former is 100% correct, is it not?
With that in mind, isn't it equally correct to write (another example) "Sergi Roberto finished his youth career at local FC Barcelona", instead of "...youth career at local club FC Barcelona". I remember writing the former in several articles, and at least once it was not all that well accepted by an English-speaking user.
One has to be completely sure when inserting material to an encyclopedia, in this case from a grammatical standpoint, and that is why I come to you for "enlightment". If striving to be one of the best there is, its contents must be in total accordance :)
Let's continue to improve this rain or shine, thanks in advance --81.193.141.118 (talk) 18:24, 5 September 2019 (UTC)
- I would say the former is fine, but would certainly include club in the latter. Mattythewhite (talk) 18:32, 5 September 2019 (UTC)
Thanks! And what would you say is the reason for this different approach (both "country" and "club" are nouns, but one is OK to render implicit whereas the other is not)? A bit confusing for a non-native... --81.193.141.118 (talk) 18:57, 11 September 2019 (UTC)

Nicky Marker
Hi, I just came across your last edit in Nicky Markers article. You are right claiming that he is not "well known" for the injury he caused on Ben Thornley. Is was also improper to place this information in the first paragraph of the lemma. But erasing it without replace, just because it was misplaced and improperly presented, is in my opinion not quite the Wikipedian manner of contribution. You could easily have just altered it: totally hiding a fact shouldn't be preferred versus poorly describing it. I'm sure that you as an administrator are fully aware of this. If you take a look on the talk page of the lemma, you can see that I might have the guilt of having inspired the anonyme user to make this change. I still fully support my former opinion and believe that this incidence has to be mentioned in Marker's lemma, as it already is in Thornley's. Not only did it have a significant impact to the victim, by ruining the career of a great talent, but also led finally to a legal fight between the two opposite sides. Don't you think it deserves to be mentioned in some way? --MedMan (talk) 04:05, 18 September 2019 (UTC)

I see that you've been involved with the block of many socks of PenguinsElite as I think that you've been confident about the edit patterns made by the socks. I have given a description on whether to do a WP:BAN on the user for not obeying the WP:SOCK rule. The discussion can be found at "Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard#WP:CBAN for PenguinsElite". Iggy (Swan) 21:41, 20 September 2019 (UTC)

Helping out
I'm as dumb as they come regarding these, so I come to you for assistance,
can you please arrange the statistical charts of José Sá and Bruno Gaspar? Greek user(s) with no clue consistently overlink the name of competitions, but that's not the most serious issue; in Mr. Sá, they (he/she?) erroneously wrote the 2011/12 season was spent in the LigaPro when it was not, it was spent in the Portuguese Second Division (third tier) - in fact, they also wrote that for FC Porto B, when in fact the team NEVER competed in the third tier after its recreation!
In Mr. Gaspar, they/he/she only wrote the seasons for Vitória S.C. B and forgot all regarding the first team. In Portugal, reserve sides are not allowed to compete in the Primeira Liga, so chart is as wrong as can be!

As I had been researching about her for a project I noticed this error immediately. My persistence paid off! After several messages to User:Mega60 (veteran Spanish user, does not speak a lick of English (and that's not me belittling him, he admitted it to me) but is a great asset for this encyclopedia regarding Spanish football, in my humble opinion), they found a reliable source (Marca is one, no?) for the subject's Tercera División stats with Valencia CF Mestalla; thus, we will be able to take the pertinent category "from hiding".
I will now ask a fellow user to retrieve said source to Mr. Guaita's statistical chart, as I am glaringly incapable of doing it myself. Attentively --81.193.141.118 (talk) 19:27, 26 September 2019 (UTC)

1 - Sevilla IP nuisance, again taking Juan Soriano Oropesa as an example: they continue at it, that warning of yours resulted in nothing!
2 - Vicente Guaita, the user I asked to retrieve the ref to his chart, :@Robby.is.on:, says he cannot read the print in the source (please see here https://issuu.com/xaba74/docs/26_gu__a_marca_de_la_liga_2017-2018, Getafe's squad - where he played at the time - is in page 116 so you'll need to do some scrolling), thus he did not "acted upon". :@Mega60:, who sent that link to my talk, says it reads Mr. Guaita as having played 28 matches in the 2007–08 Tercera División; can you be a sport and add it yourself, please?

More bits and pieces
1 - Sevilla fan IP nuisance, again taking Juan Soriano Oropesa as an example. Time for a (bigger) block or still not?
IP hails from Spain, so maybe this is utterly useless because the person does not understand one word of what is being said to them (not even that they are being blocked for disruption);

I had this thought today and I can't seem to decide whether it's right or wrong... Being a national cup top goalscorer (just like the Copa del Rey or the FA Cup) but never playing in a WP:FPL is worth a page through WP:GNG? A clear example: Migue was the top goalscorer of the 2007/08 edition of the Copa del Rey, but never played in a FPL. Can he be notable through GNG?

Hi, Mattythewhite. - Yes, considering they haven't even got the dates of Hodgson's tenure right! Mattythewhite (talk) 22:34, 17 November 2019 (UTC)
- Soccerway have dates of October 1995 to June 1997. Ties in with Blackburn (following) and previous appointment at Swiss national team; no stats as far as I can see though. Eagleash (talk) 23:07, 17 November 2019 (UTC)

Hello, you noticed that I added/changed content in an article but I didn't provide a reliable source. It's been removed and archived in the page history for now. This article was about me and I am the source. How do I change it back successfully please? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.22.134.234 (talk) 14:21, 19 November 2019 (UTC)
N'Golo Kante career statistics formatting
I know I'm new here, but wouldn't it make sense to have a '—' instead of the '0|0' in the other section. Considering how when a team has not competed in European competition, the section is dashed off instead of filled in with zeros. I was just curious as to why you undid my edit, and am curious to know if I did anything incorrectly. (MG000000000 (talk) 17:31, 23 November 2019 (UTC))
- I explained why in my edit summary. He was eligible to play in that season's FA Community Shield, hence having the zeroes, as the em dash would imply there wasn't an available competition. Mattythewhite (talk) 17:33, 23 November 2019 (UTC)
Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!
Hello,
Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.
I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!
From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.
If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.
Thank you!

Humberside / East Riding of Yorkshire
Hi there, if you are looking to make a change to the MOS I would bring it up at WPRL, otherwise it would be Humberside as that would be the county when the players were born.Fleets (talk) 19:32, 28 November 2019 (UTC)
- I'm aware of that. If you look closely at my edits, I'm not replacing Humberside with East Riding of Yorkshire. But it's not common to include the county in the infobox when it's already in the prose. Mattythewhite (talk) 19:35, 28 November 2019 (UTC)
- It's consistent here.Fleets (talk) 19:43, 28 November 2019 (UTC)
- Where is "here"? Mattythewhite (talk) 23:53, 28 November 2019 (UTC)

Darren Kelly
Apologies, not done much editing on Wikipedia and can't for the life of me figure out how to cite my source for his appointment as Scarborough Athletic manager, which is here: https://www.thescarboroughnews.co.uk/sport/football/darren-kelly-confirmed-new-scarborough-athletic-manager-1324023
Assistance would be appreciated.
