Hi there! I see you have recently been editing Copyright law of Canada. I have been assigned to do some edits on Canadian copyright and related topics for a class on government information. Do you have any suggestions for areas that could use some attention? Any advice is appreciated! Edasi088 (talk) 00:23, 4 April 2019 (UTC)

  • There are certainly potential changes in legislation that need to be kept up to date -- I ended up editing the page because I was checking copyright status of a work and realized the page's information had fallen out of date and was somewhat misleading. I would recommend following Michael Geist who has a blog and discusses Canadian copyright review and legal issues. Unless he's one of your professors, his page could use some work too, converting external links in text into inline citations. If you're new to Wikipedia, I suggest starting by checking the existing sources cited, confirming that they support the statements made, and updating any dead links or bad information. Happy editing! Marie Ozanne

Marie Ozanne article was a contribution to aWomen in Red effort in March. I could not figure out to show it on the effort page. Should I have some indication of WIR on the talk page/

  • Hi Dave, I added {{WIR-00-2019}} on her talk page, and then clicked on the #1day1woman initiative hashtag that was displayed as a result, and added her to the list of new articles by adding #{{flagicon|Guernsey}} [[Marie Ozanne]] to April. I added a note to indicate that the article actually appeared in March, but was not added to list then. They can move it once they've responded to it, if they want to. Thanks for lending me the book! I am enjoying reading it. Mary Mark Ockerbloom (talk) 21:48, 16 April 2019 (UTC)

DYK for Walter Stanley Haines

The fact was ... that Walter Stanley Haines (pictured) testified about the Haymarket bombing of 1886, the disappearance of Louisa Luetgert in 1897, and the suspicious deaths in multimillionaire Thomas H. Swope's family in 1909? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Walter Stanley Haines. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Walter Stanley Haines), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. A bit of help?

Hi Mary,

Remember last week I was saying how I haven't succeeded in finding any women's bios to write? Well, I found 1 Sonja Hoel Perkins and think it is almost undelete-able. But I'll be out-of-touch for the weekend. A bit of help would go a long way. Smallbones(smalltalk) 03:59, 17 May 2019 (UTC)

@Smallbones: Delighted to help! If you get a chance, can you look over Mary C. Tanner and Frederick Frank (businessman)? Mary Mark Ockerbloom (talk) 14:46, 20 May 2019 (UTC)
Thanks. Both look good with the once over, but I'll be on it in detail tomorrow. Smallbones(smalltalk) 15:34, 20 May 2019 (UTC)

Hi there, thanks for creating the nice article Gao Xiaoxia! As you already saw, I've nominated it for DYK. Part of this series

This is part of the inventor series, and I might write this up, but he is not the person I was talking about. Smallbones(smalltalk) 18:14, 8 June 2019 (UTC)

This is what I was looking for. I'm certain that there are 3-4 sources that say similar things.

The entire series is here.

Smallbones(smalltalk) 21:38, 8 June 2019 (UTC)

  • Hi @Smallbones:, Some of the blog pages give a fairly extensive summary of her life. I would use one or two of those summaries as quick outlines for the structure of the article, but the citations I would rely on to establish notability would be the books. She is mentioned pretty frequently in discussions of patent history, and also gets mentioned in articles of her time in places like Scientific American. That only 77 patents were issued to women between 1790 and 1860 establishes an important context for her contributions given that she held what, 7? Given the breadth of possible published sources over time, I think a solid article could be put together about her. Great series on inventors, BTW, I will have to come back to it! Thanks for bringing it to my attention. Mary Mark Ockerbloom (talk) 13:45, 12 June 2019 (UTC)

Please see Yola Letellier

Probably the most over-referenced article I've ever put together. One of the most bizarre, in its own way. Those royals! One problem though - I can't stop calling her by her 1st name. Smallbones(smalltalk) 12:56, 19 August 2019 (UTC)

@Smallbones: Fun! The pronouns in the following sentence, however, leave me totally confused :-) "Mary Jayne Gold, a close friend she met skiing in Davos, introduced her to her lover Etienne de Horthy." Did Etienne love them both?
On vacation for a few more days, Mary Mark Ockerbloom (talk) 14:08, 19 August 2019 (UTC)
Just Yola and Istvan. I'll change it. Enjoy your vacation. Smallbones(smalltalk) 14:19, 19 August 2019 (UTC)
External images

I realize that I'm breaking every rule in the feminist book here, e.g. defining a famous woman by her relationships, but somehow this seems the way to go for this subject. See fr:Henri Tellier if you read French (Google translate is fine). And see "Monats" for some very nice pix, especially see her bathroom, you may not recognize it - it's the room that looks like a football field. Do you read German (Google translate doesn't work there). I'm thinking a double DYK for individual articles on Yola Letellier and Henri Letellier. Smallbones(smalltalk) 21:03, 20 August 2019 (UTC)
@Smallbones:, if you want to nominate both, do they both have to be created within a week of the nomination date? Yola is about to hit one week out -- if the date can be based on the newer article of the two, there's no problem. Otherwise you might want to nominate her now and make a note that you're working on the second article. Mary Mark Ockerbloom (talk) 19:18, 25 August 2019 (UTC)
Also, @Smallbones:, I just reviewed a DYK for Nora Houston, and found this 1907 self-portrait - am I right that it qualifies for commons as public domain by pre-1923 standards? Want to release it if so? Mary Mark Ockerbloom (talk) 18:52, 25 August 2019 (UTC)
My first question - is it really 1907? I just looks odd to me.
But the second set of questions would probably overcome any pre-1923 objection. Was it displayed before 1923? (likely) . Is there a copyright notice? (highly unlikely) Was it displayed publicly without a copyright notice before 1978? (almost certain from the information in the Richmond article). I'd say it's PD, but those Commons admins sometimes don't agree with me! BTW Yola is an interesting article to me and I could see a DYK, Henri doesn't interest me much, only the novelty of getting a double DYK. Smallbones(smalltalk) 19:38, 25 August 2019 (UTC)
@Smallbones: In that case, do you want me to start a DYK nomination for her? Mary Mark Ockerbloom (talk) 19:47, 25 August 2019 (UTC)
That would be wonderful! I know I should do it, but I'm supposed to be concentrating on the next Signpost and can't get around all the distractions. :) . Smallbones(smalltalk) 20:00, 25 August 2019 (UTC)

Pennsylvania is not an original, founding state.

According to an editor who says so. Please look at the last entry of my talk page for his challange to my revert. Look at it, and the history of Pennsylvania, and give me advice, right there.--Dthomsen8 (talk) 20:43, 7 September 2019 (UTC)

  • @Mary Mark Ockerbloom: My apologies for this conversation carrying over onto your User talk page; I had hoped @Dthomsen8: would simply begin a dialogue with me regarding his revert of my edit (which I had initiated on his talk page). I wasn't expecting that he would involve another editor on what should be a relatively simple matter to resolve. I did feel the need to respond here because Mr. Thomsen's comments phrasing above is not quite accurate. My good faith edit was made for the sake of accuracy of the article about the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (title: "Pennsylvania"). I changed the existing text in the first sentence of the lede's third paragraph from "The state is one of the 13 original founding states of the United States" to "The state is one of the original Thirteen Colonies of the United States." In hindsight, I probably should have refined the phrasing further so that the sentence more closely matches the Thirteen Colonies article, "It was one of the original Thirteen Colonies of Great Britain on the Atlantic coast of America which declared independence in 1776 and formed the United States of America." I'm not quite sure why a prior editor felt the need to change "Thirteen Colonies" to "13 original founding states" because it was that change which injected an unnecessary lack of clarity (and one might say error) into an important article. I was simply trying to correct it that so that the article no longer implies that Pennsylvania was a state when it was still a colony. Again, my apologies, Mary Mark Ockerbloom, if this is not the appropriate place to discuss this issue. If Dthomsen8 agrees to the new wording that I'm proposing, perhaps we can make the change and then let the matter drop? Kind Regards. 47thPennVols (talk) 21:57, 7 September 2019 (UTC)

New Wikimedian in Residence table

A new wikimedian in residence table should soon be implemented based on data from outreach:Wikimedian_in_residence (draft table). If there are any WiRs you know that are missing, please add them. In the meantime, see the map! T.Shafee(Evo&Evo)talk 08:48, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

RFPP Decline

Hi there :)

I just declined your page protection request, but thought I'd expand a little on my very short summary on the page.

Firstly, you mentioned you hadn't requested a block before, but I'm assuming you mean a page protection, or were you requesting one of the IP editors be blocked? Sorry if misinterpreted.

For articles, RFPP only protects them if they're currently or very recently going through disruption. Other than your own there haven't been any edits in 6 weeks or so, so the page seems to have settled a bit without more aggressive methods.

You're right about there being a couple of IP editor issues going on - one issue is the addition of some promotional edits, the other is some dispute about the primary thing Barbey is known for. If the former flared up then protection would be one way of dealing with it, though if it was just 1 editor asking an admin to have a look at blocking them would also be a possible method. For the edit war, an initial effort at nudging them to the Talk Page would probably be worthwhile, though if they got out of control then again page protection would be fine.

In terms of the formatting of the request (I don't know if you did it manually or with Twinkle) was fine.

Hopefully the page will stay reasonably controlled and you should be able to edit without issues - please feel free to drop me a line if something flares up and you'd like another pair of eyes.

ArbCom 2019 election voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2019 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 on Monday, 2 December 2019. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2019 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:07, 19 November 2019 (UTC)

DYK for Winifred Hallwachs

On 23 November 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Winifred Hallwachs, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that tropical ecologist Winifred Hallwachs helped develop and expand the Área de Conservación Guanacaste in Costa Rica, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Winifred Hallwachs. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Winifred Hallwachs), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.
