Releasing prepbio to bitbucket

Hi, even though prepbio leads to your bitbucket, the source code for it is not to be found there? Would you be willing to reveal it? Thank you, --Wesalius (talk) 10:07, 27 May 2020 (UTC)

Sorry - don't know how to use bitbucket. Is prepbio down or is it just me? I use it heavily (I love it thank you). If I type in the content it's fine but it's not doing anything when I input a Q number. ☕ Antiqueight chatter 13:08, 23 June 2020 (UTC)

wmflabs vs. toolforge what is comparable?

What changes have been made to Glamorous? What is a comparable for the old results?

Old wmflabs link https://tools.wmflabs.org/glamtools/glamorous.php returns 404.html

New link is https://glamtools.toolforge.org/glamorous/

Running a monthly report, for "Portraits, Science History Institute" I get some numbers from the toolforge version that I'm not sure how to interpret. Last month I released 16 new files in this category, but I also reviewed all 671 files, creating and adding to Wikidata items.

overall wikidata en.wikipedia de fr ar es
Last month's results (wmflabs): 1055 326(1) 445(2) 93 66 75 50(3)
Total file usages (toolforge this month) 1754 573 634 145 93 96 213
Pages using files (toolforge this month) 1281 510 406 103 57 88 117
Distinct files used (toolforge this month) 1302 516 396 99 78 74 139

(1) Wikidata usage substantially increases for all three toolforge columns, as expected, since I spent a lot of time adding existing portraits to wikidata items.

(2) However, English usage (445) either increased much more than I would expect (Total file usages, 634) or dropped (pages using files, 406, or Distinct files used, 396).

(3) Also, there's a huge increase for Spanish Wikipedia on all counts, from 50 last month to 213, 117, or 139.

I can't run the old version to see what it would have given me for the current data. What from this new version is comparable? Can you give me some insight about what is happening here? Many thanks, I appreciate that you have built a number of valuable tools which I use for tracking. Mary Mark Ockerbloom (talk) 20:12, 24 June 2020 (UTC)

Listeria bug during WLE

Hi Magnus, sorry disturbing as this, but could you check this issue: [1]? We are running the WLE, and this is kind important. Rodrigo Tetsuo Argenton (talk) 05:36, 1 July 2020 (UTC)

A goat for you!

I was checking something to see if the User:ListeriaBot would make an error in a list. It did not. Nicely done! Have a goat (instead of an error report).

Help with page publications

Dear Magnus Manske, I have attempted to create a page - Draft:Hopster - for Hopster, the preschool entertainment platform, however, it got rejected by you. I have requested help in order to be able to publish it and was advised to contact you directly. When creating the page, I believe I've met the guidelines. It has received the Kidscreen Awards, the most prestigious children's media awards in the US, 3 years in a row in 2020, 2019 and 2018. It is also listed on the Wikipedia list of Children's Interest Channels.

Please look at how the company is trending as opposed to Baraem, a similar page that has been granted a wiki page: https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?q=hopster,baraem

Please help me get this page live or advise me on the required edits. Thanks in advance. Agneslesti1 (talk) 15:22, 17 July 2020 (UTC)

Hello Magnus! Few days ago (evening of 28 July as I remember) I looked that Missing Topics works but not updated "red links list" for Category:Curling (number of new articles created days before it and yesterday and today, but MT "didn't see" that adds - and reported the same "Now checking links on 4400 pages" and "21846 missing pages found" as before this adds). Fix it please ASAP. MT is great tool for "watch how work goes on"! -- Alexey Gustow (talk) 17:41, 31 July 2020 (UTC)

Same error and same inability to use BitBucket.
I think the problem is that the actual link starts with https://glamtools.toolforge.org/glamorous.php? but the Do button produces a link to https://glamtools.toolforge.org/glamtools/glamorous.php which yields the 404 error.--Pere prlpz (talk) 17:52, 30 July 2020 (UTC)

Hi Magnus, per the discussion at Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2020_June_28#Category:RTT, I am planning to close this discussion as a rename from Category:RTT to Category:Wikipedia medicine articles ready to translate and Category:RTT(full) to Category:Wikipedia medicine articles ready to translate (full). There's some consensus there to rename it to be less ambiguous. However, it appears that the category is related to a tool that you are involved with here. I wanted to notify you first so that you can fix the tool if necessary. Thanks, bibliomaniac15 21:49, 22 August 2020 (UTC)

Catfood died because of schema update

Hi! I tried to find CatFood’s source code on BitBucket, but I couldn’t. (Consequently I can’t open an issue there as requested at the top of this page.) So first of all, please publish it, or if it’s already there, please make it more discoverable. Second, it doesn’t work (example query). RSS has very strict rules, and if the page isn’t valid, newsreaders simply reject it. The output of your script is invalid: it contains

Notice: Undefined property: stdClass::$img_user_text in /data/project/catfood/public_html/catfood.php on line 308

multiple times (which is invalid RSS and should obviously not be there). Apparently you try to use the column image.img_user_text, which is deprecated since MW 1.31 and removed as of 1.34 (the last wmf version of 1.35 has just been deployed this week, so 1.34 appeared quite long ago on Wikimedia). I can try fixing it, but please publish the source code on BitBucket (or anywhere else) so that I can send a pull request. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 16:45, 16 July 2020 (UTC)

This is still broken, please do something about it. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 09:16, 17 August 2020 (UTC)

Fixed now. Sorry for the delay, I'm not often on enwiki these days...--Magnus Manske (talk) 18:12, 16 September 2020 (UTC)
Thanks! Do you plan to publish the source code? It would have been a lot faster to just create a pull request (or at least create an issue right where the code lives, instead of a random Wikipedia talk page). —Tacsipacsi (talk) 12:57, 17 September 2020 (UTC)

"Suggest articles from interwikis" is down

Hi Magnus. I notice that "Suggest articles from interwikis" is down for some time already. Although it is a tool with a long history, it is still very useful today, as it can sort the results by the number of site links, and can search the whole site when the "Inside category" field leaves blank. These features are not in PetScan at the moment, so PetScan still cannot replace that tool yet. --Kwgulden (talk) 01:01, 31 August 2020 (UTC)

Listeria-bot bugging on Wikipedia in Portuguese

Hello Magnus. How are you? I hope this message finds you well. There is a systemic bug going on with Listeria-bot on Wikipedia in Portuguese: most pages that rely on the bot to produce tables are including all sorts of errors. This is especially worrisome in our Wikipedia as Listeria-generated lists are available on the main space. Could you please take a look? I could not identify any local change, so I am assuming this is something happening at a different level. Thanks a lot! --Joalpe (talk) 11:08, 16 November 2020 (UTC)

ListeriaBot v2 in data namespace

Hi, in your blogpost you wrote Foundation to use the Commons Data namespace to store the lists, then display them on a wiki via Lua. This would allow lists to be updated without editing the wikitext of the page, and no part of the list is directly editable by users (thus, no possibility of the bot overwriting human edits, a reason given to disallow Listeria edits in main namespace). The code is actually pretty complete already (including the Lua), but it got bogged down a bit in details of encoding information like sections which is not “native” to tabular data. An example with both wiki and “tabbed” versions is here.

Is there already a way to configure what will be stored to Commons data? I was not able to find any configuration (=SPARQL query) for data-namespace list so is it currently hardcoded in server side? I would like to try out the feature with population data. --Zache (talk) 08:04, 4 December 2020 (UTC)

ListeriaBot issue in it.Wiki . Please check: [2]. --No2 (talk) 17:50, 6 December 2020 (UTC)

Not sure what you are trying to do, but you cant select the red linking based on decision if the topic is notable on wikipedia or not as there is no such data in Wikipedia. You can only choose between "link all" OR "link all with existing Wikipedia article" OR "without links". I changed it now so that it will link only items with existing wikipedia articles. [3]. --Zache (talk) 10:00, 7 December 2020 (UTC)
Ok. Now seems fine. The idea of such recurrent bot adding all links in a very long article is almost always wrong. Btw, does Listeriabot understand the nobots template? --No2 (talk) 13:13, 7 December 2020 (UTC)

Mix'n'Match sets variation for Wikisource articles?

Hi Magnus. With the reproduced works at enWS (and presumably the other WSes), I am trying to work out a reasonable means of matching biographical articles to subjects, to try and automate the process rather than straight manual matching. Is there a means to do this with your Mix'n'Match tool, especially where we have already created the items? I looked at the importer, though that just scared me away as potentially creating duplicates. What I am wanting to do is place a main subject (P921) property at the biographical article item linking to existing person-items, and looking for a better way to do it. — billinghurst sDrewth 04:54, 2 January 2021 (UTC)

Wrong behaviour with Orcidator ORCID metadata

Hi:

Seems to me the Orcidator (at https://sourcemd.toolforge.org/orcidator_old.php) author metadata importing is not working. The only thing it does is adding a wrong Twitter ID to the element, the ORCID Twitter indeed, as you can check. This Twitter value is the same for many actual elements.

Just reporting. Thanks.

Activating listeriabot on enwikiversity

Hi Magnus! What're the necessary steps to activate listeriabot on enwikiversity? I want to use it to replace the manual work on pages like:

T.Shafee(Evo&Evo)talk 10:08, 6 January 2021 (UTC)

I've made a post at the Wikiversity main discussion page, where it was indicated that all that is needed is to fill in this short form, which I'm happy to do if you can show me how to add wikiversity to the list of sites looked at by listeriabot for pages to edit. Minor fixes to userscripts

Hey Magnus, it looks like you've got some user scripts used by others that have bare javascript global wg-style variables. These are phab:T72470 deprecated, and while I don't think there's a timeline for their removal, it's been that way for a while. It's usually a straightforward fix, all uses need to use mw.config.get, such as converting wgTitle to mw.config.get('wgTitle'). There's some more info at mw:ResourceLoader/Migration guide (users)#Global wg variables. Some are quite old, not sure if you want to hold on to them. I can take care of cleaning them up for you if you like, or give you a full list if you want to handle it, just let me know! ~ Amory (utc) 12:22, 27 January 2021 (UTC)

Could you teach me how to activate a new listeriabot?

Hi Magnus!

Sorry to pester, but I want to try to progress this asap as it'll save a huge amount of manual copy-paste labour.

I'm really keen to get listeriabot activated for enwikiversity. Could you show me how to set it up if - or point me to the relevant documentation/readme (happy to videochat at a time of your choosing if that's easier). I've also left a note on the github repo in case that's a better place to reach you. T.Shafee(Evo&Evo)talk 03:40, 19 February 2021 (UTC)

I think I'm getting closer to finding the bug (documenting on listeria_rs/issues/54), but could still really use some help. The test on meta works fine, but the test on enwv results in the following message:
Done.
Last line: OK: User:Evolution_and_evolvability/sandbox not edited

So something must be going wrong with save_wikitext_to_page. It needs to submit to en.wikiversity.org/w/api.php. Is the wikitext being sent to the api incorrect? Does it need a token? T.Shafee(Evo&Evo)talk 04:47, 25 February 2021 (UTC)

Listeria "Killed by OS for overloading memory"

I'm not sure whether this issue is on the correct GitHub repo. If it's in the right place for Listeria issues and you just haven't gotten to it yet, I apologize for bugging you about it again here. Is there something we can do to avoid overloading memory when using Listeria to create lists on Wikidata? Or is it a bug that needs to be fixed? It seems that a number of users are having this problem and are not sure how to procceed. Thanks for all you do for Wikidata, --Clements.UWLib (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 00:06, 17 June 2021 (UTC)

Bout Not in the other language tool

Thanks for Not in the other language tool. Long time before exist an similar tool but the order was not alfabetical but the criteria "most interwiki" (most important!?). Trought this tool I find pages in 130 lenguages but not in Esperanto!!!! (mi home wiki).

Suggest articles from interwikis (https://joanjoc.toolforge.org/artniw.php?uselang=en) but joanjoc not read messages 😭😭😭. Its posible add this function to your tool?

Similar tool: https://cil2.toolforge.org/

It was powerfull tool for Editathons, list of recomends/Requested entries.

Deactivate Wikidata Distributed Game

Hi Magnus, Im trying to deactivate two bad duplicated wikidata games. Can you delete https://wikidata-game.toolforge.org/distributed/#game=76 and https://wikidata-game.toolforge.org/distributed/#game=77 ? The good one is already running in https://wikidata-game.toolforge.org/distributed/#game=78 The api games 76 and 77 are returning null, but wasnt deactivated automatically.

Killed by OS for overloading memory

Hallo Magnus, seit einiger Zeit meldet Listria "Killed by OS for overloading memory".

– Tacsipacsi (talk) 00:40, 4 October 2021 (UTC)

glamorous- some tracking problems

Hi Magnus Manske. I'm Alice Fontana, I'm preparing a thesis and I'm using your glam tools. I noticed a problem with glamours, can I tell you about it? (https://glamtools.toolforge.org/glamorous/?). I noticed that when I try to study a category, the visualizations of the images are always zero; but if I take a subcategory of this instead I can see the views. Thanks for your attention. Regards,

It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled

A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:06, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Duplicity

Hallo, Magnus Manske,
wir nutzen Duplicity gerne auf frrwiki. In den letzten Wochen werden jedoch zahlreiche falsch positive gelistet:

Killed by OS for overloading memory

Hello Magnus Manske, on the Dutch Wikipedia I have several pages that are sometimes updated by ListeriaBot with new information from Wikidata. That works very good, thanks. For one page, nl:Gebruiker:Robotje/TK-leden, the last update was more than half a year ago. Every time I try to manually trigger an update of that page I either get a time out or a "Killed by OS for overloading memory" message. Until August last year, updates were possible. I can imagine that a request can consume too much resources and therefore needs to be 'killed', but it was possible in the past to have that page updated. So it looks like the rules became more strict around August last year. Is there any indication those rules will be more relaxed in the near future? - Robotje (talk) 13:38, 28 March 2022 (UTC)

@Robotje: Not only stricter rules can explain it: it’s more likely that simply there’s more data – more items, more statements per item, more references etc. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 09:11, 29 March 2022 (UTC)
This really huge overview was last updated by ListeriaBot in August last year. More than 10 times bigger then 'my page' that was also for the last time updated in August. I cannot rule out that additional information in Wikidata is the root cause, but to me it seems more likely both have more to do with a change in the resources that ListeriaBot is allowed to use and/or a change in the software that ListeriaBot is using. Anyway, thanks for your reply, because the point you mentioned can certainly be one of the reasons that such an error message can occur now and didn't in the past. - Robotje (talk) 09:42, 29 March 2022 (UTC)

Duplicity improvements

Hello Magnus,

You asked to use bitbucket but I do not see duplicity there, so I am still posting you here. I have been using duplicity a lot the last few weeks, and I noticed some improvements that would make it more useful:

  1. It seems duplicity does not include disambiguation page entities on Wikidata, even if the page itself is a disambiguation page.
  2. The search results seem to be badly ordened, or not at all. Because of this the most likely result might be a few pages down, or even cut off completely if there are too many results
  3. Related to this, seeing the label in some language would be more useful than just showing the Q-number as it is now. That way, having to click all to see which if any is the right one can be reduced
  4. A more minor issue, but the stats graphic would probably be more useful if it only went back one or two years rather than many years as it is now. If you don't agree, then at least add years to the key on the x-axis - whether data is from 2015 or 2016 is more useful information than whether it is from 13 or 14 May.

Thank you for listening to me, and very special thank you for building and maintaining all those tools! - Andre Engels (talk) 10:17, 6 April 2022 (UTC)

New administrator activity requirement

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

Missing Topics Tool

Hallo Magnus, das Missing Topics Tool liefert die Fehlermeldung

There was an error running the query [Unknown column 'tl_title' in 'field list']

This seems to be fixed now, but a number of queries don't return all results. "photographs in Russia", "photographs in Iran", "photographs in Poland", "people of France", "people of Germany", for some examples where the query cuts out halfway. Safeguarding (talk) 09:23, 26 September 2022 (UTC)

Baglama for Wikisource

Hi Magnus, are you the maintainer for Baglama tool? I've just recently stumbled into it, and it's a wonderful tool. Would it be possible to add the pageviews on Wikisource as well, since GLAM-related projects are not only Wikipedia.

Example:

And while we're at it, couldl the pageview of the file itself in Commons get added too?

Thank you! Bennylin (talk) 08:06, 28 September 2022 (UTC)

Oh, apparently Wikisource has been included in another count request that I made:
So maybe it's because Balinese Wikisource hasn't been added to the Baglama code to check or something?
Also, I noticed some inconsistencies in the site names:
Site Pages Views
  • Indonesian Wikipedia Details 17 21,031
  • English Wikipedia Details 25 9,535
  • Wikisource Details 71 204 -> it should say which edition it is (i.e. Indonesian Wikisource)
  • Malay Wikipedia Details 8 94
  • Chinese Wikipedia Details 10 71
  • Italian Wikipedia Details 3 44
  • Wikidata Details 5 32
  • Spanish Wikipedia Details 2 13
  • Portuguese Wikipedia Details 3 11
  • French Wikipedia Details 1 2
  • Welsh Wikipedia Details 1 0
  • Meta Wikipedia Details 2 0
  • Wikipedia Details 2 0 -> This apparently refer to outreach:, which is not a Wikipedia; link to wrong site: https://outreach.wikipedia.org/
  • Wikipedia Details 42 0 -> This apparently refer to oldwikisource:, which is not a Wikipedia either. See other examples in here (Images from Tropenmuseum)
14 sites
And where can we help with the localization? We would like to show these stats to our GLAM partners.
Also, in addition to the number of pages and views, is it possible to count the number of images and unique images used in every project, the total images in the categories (main and subs), and the percentage of images in that category that being used, like in GLAMorous tool?
Thank you again! Bennylin (talk) 08:11, 28 September 2022 (UTC)

Renamed category stats on Baglama2

Hi @Magnus Manske, first of all thank you so much for all the awesome tools you have created that help the entire Wikimedia community. Secondly, I am having an issue with BaGLAMa 2 in which statistics for a certain category stopped being displayed after the category was renamed and now I am unable to add the new category as the renaming was just about capitalization of one letter. Wikipedia page Peter Thomas McGuigan

Hi @Magnus Manske: Thanks for your message regarding https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Thomas_McGuigan. Please help me out, A couple of days ago, I received an email from someone from Wikipedia telling me that Peter Thomas McGuigan photo doesn’t have “permission” and will be deleted, I wrote back saying I took the photo about 30 years ago and I own the copyright. And I filled out the form about it while I created the page. I haven’t heard any response since then, but received the message from you. I can’t find any record on the “talk” page. Should I prove I took the photo? I already put my legal name on the photo, but I don’t use my legal name for writing with Wikipedia just like most of the wiki volunteers except for my published fiction books. In this case, what should I do to keep Peter Thomas McGuigan's photo on the page? Many Thanks! ~~1001Bookworm~~ 1001Bookworm (talk) 12:55, 6 November 2022 (UTC)
