(^.^) Can you count the quality of your stuff using hats and awards? I mean I have improved many articles (and I missed to count/list them somewhere) but many problems I have (for example) is that the rules of DYK are totally stupid: I have normally not the time to improve an article within 5 days or why exclude (software feature) lists?, etc. So not moving an article to GA/FA/DYK/ITN doesn't mean that you don't make good pages now. For me, some other metrics have proven as useful: when I expand an article, I normally try to improve related articles (leaving at least a link) and thus on the long scale(some months before vs. some month after) I can say that these pages got mostly doubled the page views! This works of course only for existing articles... mabdul 10:50, 1 July 2012 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (File:Garmin-Barracuda jersey.gif)

Resolved
 – Image was replaced with an up to date version. mabdul 10:54, 7 July 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Garmin-Barracuda jersey.gif. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:35, 7 July 2012 (UTC)

Template:redirect shortcut

Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Template:Redirect shortcut (edit | project page | history | links | watch | logs)

Hi, I think that Template:Redirect shortcut will be useful, because it will take less typing to create a redirect. If the submission is successful, maybe I could create redirects to the template so it would be much more easier to use. For example,
{{subst:ds|Foo}}
would probably take less work than
#REDIRECT [[Foo]] Koopatrev (talk) 12:54, 7 July 2012 (UTC)

But there is already a template ds, see: {{ds}}! So the template subst code is actually longer. mabdul 13:21, 7 July 2012 (UTC)

Frage

Admin backlogs

Regarding the admin backlogs comment at PERM/R, there are usually (in fact pretty much all the time) backlogs at RPP. You can sometimes wait a few days for CAT:CSD to be competely cleared (I've had a G3, wait there for more than a day). You can wait 6 hours (and sometimes a lot longer) for AIV to be completely cleared. The three primary admin areas (protection, deletion & blocks) are where the backlogs turn up. And I don't see (and quite rightly) non-admins being given user rights to work in these three places. Callanecc (talkcontribs) talkback (etc) template appreciated. 02:39, 15 July 2012 (UTC)

If I'm correct there wasn't any major change at CSD since 2005 (~7 years) and RPP is not really younger. If you reread the request, you will notice that we both were talking about new backlogs. Can you direct me to new ones? I know that we are heavily backlogged at all places, but new (admin) backlogs? Actually the group 'admins' have to do less work since more and more people doing NACs, getting more rights (ACC, edit notices, file mover, better tools, maybe an edit protected right next time, to name the big rights, but also move over rediect.) - The main problem is that the group of admins is actually shrinking although the admin actions are growing. mabdul 10:32, 15 July 2012 (UTC)
I was referring to the increasing number of jobs being an increasing number of requests at the usual places (CSD, RPP, AIV, etc) not more new places for admins to do stuff. Callanecc (talkcontribs) talkback (etc) template appreciated. 11:25, 15 July 2012 (UTC)
Are you really sure that there are increasing number of requests? Can you provide any stats for that? I mean that would be actually very interesting for some discussions like one of the last Signposts or WT:RFA discussions. (And I still doubt that there are more requests, except maybe UAA; always depends on the time frame; I assume something around ~2008) mabdul 12:05, 15 July 2012 (UTC)

AFCH suggestion - marking article as high quality for Wikipedia:WikiProject Abandoned Drafts

Hiyas there Mabdul,

Another suggestion right on your talk page rather then on the dev page (O well) for AFCH. I was thinking that it might be an idea to have an extra option in AFCH that allows one to mark a page as potentially high quality for Wikipedia:WikiProject Abandoned Drafts, just in case the creator abandons it. It would mean less sifting trough old stuff, and allow one to keep a backlog of promising pages. I was thinking about a template on the page, but it may be easier to let AFCH record it on some project subpage, just in case the editor replaces all the content in the article. Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 19:40, 16 July 2012 (UTC)

Interesting idea: I would like to see a discussion at WT:AFC and of the Abandoned Drafts projects page (on one page together!) on what basis an draft should be marked. As far as my reviewing standard is: if it includes three good sources: move it - so only drafts with unreliable and/or non-notable are left over. so which kind of drafts should be marked? The technical implementation is rather easy, independent of using a template, a cat, or a separated page like the /recent. mabdul 19:47, 16 July 2012 (UTC)
I'll try to create a section on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Articles for creation to discuss this this evening, and I'll transclude the section on the abandoned drafts talk page so that everyone can see and edit the same thing. A set of guidelines would be a good idea, to prevent clogging the process with useless article's (A few check boxes to mark common problems might be useful, since not every editor might like searching sources or Wikifying). Article about Radha Thomas

Wikipedia talk:Articles_for_creation/Radha_Thomas (edit | project page | history | links | watch | logs)

I am currently working on the Wiki page for Ms Radha Thomas. She is an Indian jazz singer and songwriter. In fact, she is known as a diva in the Indian jazz scene. She previously was with the band Human Bondage and has sung and performed globally. The article is still under development. I haven't completed it or submitted it for review yet. You can have a look at it at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/Radha_Thomas. I will be requesting your help and advice (as usual) in making it conform to all Wiki standards. If you do a Google Search for Radha (https://www.google.co.in/#hl=en&output=search&sclient=psy-ab&q=Radha+Thomas&oq=Radha+Thomas&gs_l=hp.3..0l2j0i30l2.1190.3159.0.3385.12.12.0.0.0.0.282.1949.0j11j1.12.0...0.0...1c.dYmnNUlMsQM&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.r_qf.,cf.osb&fp=f6ee012440c72a74&biw=1024&bih=509) you will find dozens of articles and links to her work. As of now, the article is still under development and I will come bug you for help soon! Varunr (talk) 06:47, 18 July 2012 (UTC)

I won't search, and neither should the reader have to search for the references. Please add them to your draft as described at WP:REFB.
Please remove the {{commonscat}} because at Wikimedia Commons is not such an category!
Please read WP:REFB, WP:42 and similar linked pages about the sourcing.
Please remove the 'Main article: List of Radha Thomas tours and concerts' and the 'See also'-section for now, since there isn't such an article!
Moreover you have to think about what you are writing. Whitney Houston or Radha Thomas? The 'Authority control' at the bottom is linked to Whiteney. So either remove it or correct it!
Regards, mabdul 15:25, 18 July 2012 (UTC)
Many thanks. I have made those changes. As mentioned, it's still under development. I haven't even submitted it to AFC yet. As I said, I will come back to bug you when it's ready for AFC. Thanks again for helping :-).Varunr (talk) 10:41, 23 July 2012 (UTC)

AFCH

What would you think about adding one more tool to the AFC Helper Script. Have a checkmark when approving an article for if it is a biography and another checkmark for if it is a BLP. If it is a BLP it will automatically append {{WikiProject Biography}} with living=yes as a parameter, if it is not, it would append the WikiProject with living=no. In addition, the script could allow you to fill out {{Persondata}} and {{L}} with the needed information. Ryan Vesey Review me! 13:18, 19 July 2012 (UTC)

Sounds good. I will add it in a few minutes to our development page. This should be achieved rather easy and helps to decrease (or better saying: not to increase) the backlogs even more. Thanks for the L-template, didn't know it! mabdul 14:54, 19 July 2012 (UTC)
The L template is the more difficult one I believe, it needs to be substituted; however, it's great because it should add two categories to every article. (Birth year and living or birth year and death year) I'm glad that it seems doable.. Ryan Vesey Review me! 14:58, 19 July 2012 (UTC)
No the tool can do simply substituted it as normal templates. The work is the testing. ;-) mabdul 15:00, 19 July 2012 (UTC)
How do you imagine it would work? Would the script ask you to input a birth and death year and defaultsort or would it create the blank template in append to page and request that the submitter fills it out? Ryan Vesey Review me! 15:02, 19 July 2012 (UTC)
At the moment I thought of doing it that way:
Create another checkbox at the 'accept' menu, if it is a biography.
if checked, another checkbox will be visible: living person?
and new "textboxes" similar to the textbox of 'Move submission to:'.
So the design is rather "easy". The (substituted) templates will be added to the talkpage/article page after the cleanup. mabdul 15:51, 19 July 2012 (UTC)
Cool! Thanks so much. Ryan Vesey Review me! 14:12, 20 July 2012 (UTC)
When will you finish coding the tool so it evaluates the submission by itself and chooses to accept or decline? Someguy1221 (talk) 06:03, 21 July 2012 (UTC)

Hello, Mabdul

I discovered that you made a couple of strange edits to K-Lite Codec Pack that broke the infobox versioning. So, please, before assuming that anything is wrong, verify the output to see whether it is actually wrong. (You had assumed that removal of |name parameter has broken the article whereas it did not.) Also, please preview your edits to see if they have desirable results. (They did not, in this case; the article displayed wrong version number.)

Best regards,
Codename Lisa (talk) 10:04, 20 July 2012 (UTC)

Uhhhm, it is broken! Do and click on the 9.0.8 on the actual version! Then you will get to an nonexistent page, which is fixed by the name parameter! The version numbering in [1] is not broken, it simply displays another template; I would use the correct one if you show me it... mabdul 11:40, 20 July 2012 (UTC)
Hi.
In all revisions of the article (yours and mine) clicking on "9.0.8" takes you to the wrong destination while clicking on [±] takes you to the right destination. This is obviously a problem with the underlying template.
Best regards,
Codename Lisa (talk) 14:09, 20 July 2012 (UTC)
I fixed the problem.... Regards, mabdul 15:25, 20 July 2012 (UTC)

Helper Script

I do use the helper script for accepting. What gave you the impression that I was not using it; and why would it matter?... Txcrossbow (talk) 06:16, 21 July 2012 (UTC)

If you look at Vidyard, it shows that you just moved the article rather than using the accept button on the script. The biggest reason that you should use the script is because it adds the AFC wikiproject template to the talk page. It is also important because it allows you to add other wikiprojects to a page. Consider Nabil Salameh which should have {{WikiProject Biography}} at a minimum. This is especially important for BLP's. Mabdul is actually enhancing the way AFCH works for biographies, allowing you to fill in {{Pesondata}} and {{L}} which should appear on every Biography. On another note, it would be great if you could add categories to the articles you approve or add {{uncategorized}}. Every article on Wikipedia should be in at least one category. Thanks for you work and sorry I won't be able to follow up on this for a couple of hours. Ryan Vesey Review me!

AFCH idea

I don't mean to burden you with another request for AFCH, so decline this if it's too much work or you just don't like it. I hate clicks. The fewer clicks to review a submission, the better. Do you think you could add a button to the interface to go to the next open submission in the category (or a random one?). Or instead, a checkbox that makes you autonavigate to another submission once the script is done running? This would save reviewers at least one, possibly two clicks, for every submission. Over time, that could mean over 100,000 clicks every year. At two accurate clicks per second, that is over 14 editor-hours per year that could be spent reviewing more submissions! Someguy1221 (talk) 19:41, 21 July 2012 (UTC)

To be clear: I won't! Open CAT:PEND and press CTRL (or Command if you are using a Mac) and click on a submission: it will be opened in a new tab (or window, depending on your configuration and browser) and after closing that tab/window you can restart at the pendings' list. mabdul 17:24, 22 July 2012 (UTC)

Feature request for AFCH: watch settings

I set up my profile to add edited pages to my watchlist by default. Still I don't want to watch talk pages of people I merely leave notices to, so I would ask if adding a checkbox "Watch submitter's talk page" could be added to the gadget in order to help me avoid unwatching the user talk page manually. — Dmitrij D. Czarkoff (talk) 01:04, 23 July 2012 (UTC)

Already mentioned at WP:AFCH/DEV. Please keep in mind: at the moment the watchlist changes depend on settings of your Special:Preferences. Regards, mabdul 08:22, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
I failed to notice it. Instead there is the only discussion matching "watch" search: about watching WT pages instead of WP (technically impossible). My request is an ability to override preferences in watching "user:Example" and to leave alone "WT:AFC/Example Submission". — Dmitrij D. Czarkoff (talk) 08:40, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
As I said: it is already requested and noted at WP:AFCH/DEV. Feel free to post there more ideas/improvements/bugs. mabdul 09:16, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
I checked once again on WP:AFCH/DEV, and I still don't see it. All I see regarding watchlist is "U+WP instead of UT+WT", which is completely unrelated thing. Can you please point me at the discussion? — Dmitrij D. Czarkoff (talk) 10:00, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
It's called: "individual configurations/preferences". I added explicit now the part related to the watchlist, although that was already developed. (but didn't worked and thus had to get rolled back!) mabdul 10:35, 24 July 2012 (UTC)

I've done a bit more testing regarding the AfC/R multi-redirect submission bug and it doesn't just occur in my script, it occurs in the stable build and the gadget build. Could you do some more digging to see if a recent update broke AfC/R? See you soon, Nathan2055talk - contribs 04:01, 8 July 2012 (UTC)

Examples? Your last example worked with all version except your build. Please add the not working example at WP:AFC/R/sandbox. mabdul 10:06, 9 July 2012 (UTC)
You fixed this in beta, so you can go ahead and archive it. --Nathan2055talk - contribs 23:16, 7 August 2012 (UTC)

What is a proper way to deal with self-promotional AFC submissions in sandboxes?

I've noticed quite a lot of them recently, and I am a bit puzzled: should I move them to AFC or just decline in place? — Dmitrij D. Czarkoff (talk) 22:48, 27 July 2012 (UTC)

I'm not sure what you mean: "User:Example/sandbox"? Move them to the WT:AFC space (see the link under reviewer tools) and give it a real name (see also an actual thread at WT:AFC); after that you can decline. And keep in mind: we don't expect GAs, we accept the article with the minimum standard. mabdul 17:56, 31 July 2012 (UTC)
OK. I thought it is impractical to move them (kinda per WP:SNOW). Note, that I'm speaking about the articles the users write about themselves, not simply promotional submissions. BTW, GA itself is quite basic standard, as it boils down to compliance with most general policies and guidelines; or in other words no severe violations of policies and guidelines. — Dmitrij D. Czarkoff (talk) 18:07, 31 July 2012 (UTC)
Although GA is just 'follows all policies', these articles are consistent in dates, do not link years (e.g. 2009) and so forth, this is clearly not our (in sense of the AFC project) mission! We only want to create and move articles which follows the ground policies and which are (indeed) notable. As noted at WP:AFCH/DEV: I will create a possibility to move userspace drafts automatically (either to mainspace or to WT:AFC space) if they are still listed in userspace. mabdul 08:37, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

A. Wilford Brimley

His first name is Anthony, not Allen. Requests to change it (including one from his wife) have been rejected, which is understandable, since she provided no source. It should at least be edited to A. instead of Allen, since there is no verifiable source for it as Allen. Look at his IMDB page. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000979/ It has it correct, as Anthony. 96.18.212.235 (talk) 04:54, 28 July 2012 (UTC)aschiess

Beta Malfunctioning

Resolved

Please tell me how to delete the beta script from my profile.Cheers! Stella BATPHONEGROOVES 21:28, 28 July 2012 (UTC)

Hello

4shared (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

Hello, I am in need of some assistance if you could please help me with the following matter that would be fantastic. As the situation arose that I had created a page for the company 4shared, and over night it has been deleted. And I had received the following message from Hairhorn stating:

"A tag has been placed on 4shared requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia, because it appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion process. If you can indicate how it is different from the previously posted material, contest the deletion by clicking on the button that looks like this: Speedy delete contest button.svg which appears inside of the speedy deletion ({{db-...}}) tag (if no such tag exists, the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate). Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's discussion directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Administrators will consider your reasoning before deciding what to do with the page. If you believe the original discussion was unjustified, please contact the administrator who deleted the page or use deletion review instead of recreating the page. Thank you. Hairhorn"

I would like to find a way, to get my page back and have it be of use on Wikipedia. As it is written above it states "because it appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion process. If you can indicate how it is different from the previously posted material, contest the deletion by clicking on the button that looks like this ect.." but the problem is that I do not know what the previous article has looked like and what material was presented, so would it be possible if I could some how take a look at the previous article? To give a proper reasoning on how the two articles are different and how I would like mine to still be available, if maybe you could assist me on this matter?

I am quit new to Wikipedia & I do not know how the functions work, and whom to contact. Thank you so much for your time, I appreciate it.

Hi,
if you click on 4shared you will notice that this article was deleted multiple times (and one time after a 'longer' deletion discussion). At the moment I don't believe that the page is notable, but feel free to change my opinion! First please read WP:NWEB - our notability criteria for web pages, and if you still believe that it is notable, then start a new draft at WP:WIZARD (our article wizard). Don't forget to include third part, reliable and independent references to show that it is notable: that means: newspaper articles, magazone articles, books, etc. about that web page. (forums, facebook, most blogs, wikis, press releases are not suiteable to show notability!)
Here some other links you should crefully read: WP:CHEATSHEET, WP:REFB, WP:42 (and links on that page)!
You might also ask one of the deleting admins on their talkpages to 'userfy' one/the best submission for you.
Regards, mabdul 19:19, 1 August 2012 (UTC)
Sorry for intervention, but this article has a long history of deletion of different incarnations; if you, Youngblood20, indeed want it there, please create a userspace draft and submit it for Articles for creation review, so that some prior validation happens before this article becomes free for speedy deletion once again. — Dmitrij D. Czarkoff (talk) 21:12, 1 August 2012 (UTC)

Ok, well thank you so much I will be sure to take a look at all of this criteria. But is there in any way that I can get the previous article, that was written about 4shared? So I can compare the two and write up a proper analysis and such. Or is that not necessary? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Youngblood20 (talkcontribs) 09:28, 2 August 2012 (UTC)

Hi Mabdul, was planning on deleting this and moving Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Summa Metaphysica (2) in it's place. What did you want to do instead? --  :- ) Don 16:20, 5 August 2012 (UTC)

So why not leaving then Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Summa Metaphysica (2) where it is? I don't understad the need of moving anything in this case! mabdul 18:13, 5 August 2012 (UTC)
You're right as always. I keep forgetting nothing on the Wiki ever goes away, do no difference. Sorry to bother. --  :- ) Don 19:21, 5 August 2012 (UTC)
Wrong. TheIrishWarden tried to CDS'd the correct article. So there is a good reason to delete and move. I'm trying again to CSD the bad one. --  :- ) Don 15:16, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

Hello Don and Mabdul :) "Summa Metaphsyica" and "God and Evil" are two separate articles. Summa Metaphysica is the series of the two-book volume "God and Evil" and "God and Good". I will submit another article titled "God and Good" after this. All 3 should be separated as the books are very different in many aspects. Please don't merge the articles into one article under just one book title because each book is important in its field. I'd like to be able to explain what each book is about and sometimes we conduct an event for each book. Please let me know what my next step is. Thank you for your time and effort into building the knowledge into this world. I appreciate it very much :) DavidBirnbaum (talk) 21:57, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

AFC Backlog

Articles for Creation urgently needs YOUR help!

Articles for Creation is desperately short of reviewers! We are looking for urgent help, from experienced editors, in reviewing submissions in the pending submissions queue. Currently there are 1068 submissions waiting to be reviewed and many help requests at our Help Desk.

Do you have what it takes?
  1. Are you familiar with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines?
  2. Do you know what Wikipedia is and is not?
  3. Do you have a working knowledge of the Manual of Style, particularly article naming conventions?
  4. Are you autoconfirmed?
  5. Can you review submissions based on their individual merits?

If the answer to these questions is yes, then please read the reviewing instructions and donate a little of your time to helping tackle the backlog. You might wish to add {{AFC status}} or {{AfC Defcon}} to your userpage, which will alert you to the number of open submissions.

PS: we have a great AFC helper script at User:Timotheus Canens/afchelper4.js which helps in reviewing in just few edits easily!

We would greatly appreciate your help. Currently, only a small handful of users are reviewing articles. Any help, even if it's just 2 or 3 reviews, it would be extremely beneficial.
On behalf of the Articles for Creation project,
TheSpecialUser TSU

My RfA

Thank you for participating in my RfA. I appreciate your interest in my candidacy and hope that the experience can help me to better myself as a Wikipedian.

By the way, at some point in the future, you should file another RfA yourself. I remember last time around, I'd supported (see #9) and was previously under the impression that you were already an administrator. I think the concerns raised in the oppose section had some validity, but were not so serious as to preclude the possibility of ever passing at any point in the future. I suspect that if you submit an additional RfA sometime later this year (for an arbitrary timeframe, let's say after September), you'd pass pretty easily.

Take care. =) Kurtis (talk) 14:45, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

Thanks. I'm rather confused that many RfAs fail in the last time (especially Mlpearc's) although some candidates (who fails/will likely fail) have in my eyes some good chances to get the support of the community, although they might lack experience (in some areas). I'm really sorry that I had to !oppose you, but there are some stoppers/nogos which can't let me support. I have no problem in supporting youth and faithful contributors as long as they can handle criticism correctly and change their behavior if they get feedback. As I said (wanted to say) in my !oppose at your RfA, I have no problem supporting you next time if you get some a bit more experience in some of the license and address most of the raised problems. The web/internet is full of copyright violations and especially the WMF projects have to deal with copyright material correctly otherwise 'somebody' go to the curt and the consequences of such movements might result in heavy problems for all Wikipedias and other WMF project. (maybe something like a closed (or not so free) system like Citizendium) mabdul 14:59, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
Thank you for your quick response, I appreciate your sentiments and am glad you took the time to elaborate on your reasoning for opposing my RfA (although I already understood you quite well).
In your answer above, you mentioned that you have "no problem supporting youth" as long as they can "handle criticism correctly." Perhaps I'm reading too far into things, but do I give you the sense that I'm somewhat lacking in life experience or maturity, and did the manner in which I responsed to criticism at my RfA concern you somewhat? With regards to my first question, I can assure you for what it's worth that I am most definitely of the age of majority in my jurisdiction (not especially old, but certainly over the age of 18 - and that's the only hint I'm going to give you =P). That being said, I agree with you about supporting younger editors for adminship — in fact I've been intending to create a subpage about why Wikipedia should absolutely allow minors to edit. Whether it comes to fruition remains yet to be seen, but still.
In any case, take care, and good luck with whatever endeavours you pursue. =) Kurtis (talk) 15:18, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
Yes, you read too far. ;-) I meant it more on a general basis and not directly in your case. I don't expect that an admin has already reached the age of majority as long as he acts responsible and with CLUE. I know that some candidates get many !oppose simply because they are too young - but on the other hand I know many persons in real life I don't want to give the responsibility (for example) for my dog just for one day although they are old enough, but simply because they are acting /stupid/ most times. We are all humans and do mistakes, but the behavior after such mistakes should be the scale. Edit counts don't count in a similar way to the count of days on earth! I have no problem in supporting a magic kid being 14y old and acting like a 30y old (wo)man.
The major problem in the community is that the bars have risen to a level which will create us many problems in next time. mabdul 15:34, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
Oh, OK. Thanks. =)
I agree with you 100% there. Adminship criteria are generally way too high, at least in my opinion. We need more admins, and lots of trustworthy candidates have been shot down over trivial details. But I respect those who disagree all the same. Kurtis (talk) 15:36, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

Autopatrolling rights

Hello Mabdul.

I forgot to check my request for autopatrolling rights for a couple of weeks, and wondered what had happened with it. So I checked the history, and found this.

I just wanted to say that you're dead wrong. I couldn't care less about "hats". In fact, I don't even have a single one, as I am just a "PfC editor" (or possibly not even first class), and have no ambitions of ever being an admin or anything of that sort, as it just seems to be a lot of work. I don't even care about user boxes.

Fact is, that it seems you spent only seconds reviewing my request, as you just repeated the simple argument of having created "only 7 articles" (in the article space, that is). You seem not to have even noticed – as you're not mentioning it – my point that I've created somewhere around 550 to 700 templates and categories for the 2012 Summer Olympics only – all of which have had to pass through the patrol queue!

These templates and their categories - start here to learn more about them – are now in full use at the 2012 Olympics pages, and have saved hundreds, if not thousands, of edits. While doing that, it most certainly also saved hundreds (or more) of edit conflicts, along with saving thousands and thousands of kB on the wikipedia servers.

So I was just trying to relieve everyone from patrol work in the future, as there are more Olympics (Winter and Summer), Paralympics, Commonwealth Games and similar events to come, which can benefit from this concept. And I request you to believe that.

I couldn't care less about the autopatrolled rights now. In fact, I don't even want them anymore. That means that everyone will have to pore through the corresponding amount of templates and categories for future events, like the ones I mentioned above, when they are created. Serves you right. (And don't expect me to help out with any patrolling from now on.)

Cheers – and have a nice patrolling day.

You are flaming at mabdul for not recognizing your work. --Nathan2055talk - contribs 16:29, 22 August 2012 (UTC)
If I'm flaming, it's for his "hat collection" rant, and for his sloppy work, as it appears he didn't even notice the work in other article spaces, which also pass thru the patrolling queue. The question was: what's uncivil? HandsomeFella (talk) 16:44, 22 August 2012 (UTC)
WP:STICK: let it both. I also didn't see it. @HandsomeFella: to answer your question: did you know that NPP only check articles and not Templates, Cats, Talk pages, etc? The new page patrollers don't even get the new articles checked within the maximum time of 30 days. The user right autopatrolled is only given out to users who create new articles én mass. Moreover: Next time check the archives of the denied requests to recognize that I'm right. mabdul 16:51, 22 August 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the trouting. I just hate seeing NPA violations on people's talk pages. And yes, the only thing that feeds through NPP is mainspace pages. Sorry for the trouble, Nathan2055talk - contribs 21:56, 22 August 2012 (UTC)

@Mabdul: I'm afraid the archives don't show anything about "hat collection". Anyway, I accept your apology.
@Nathan: You have still to specify which personal attack you're referring to. The closest thing to that in this case is Mabdul's hat collection rant. Criticizing his poor choice of words, an insult per se, is not a personal attack, it's ... criticism.
HandsomeFella (talk) 08:43, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
You know what hat collecting is, or? This userright doesn't help you doing anything, it only helps NPPlers, nobody else. The referring to the archives was related to the fact that only mainspace articles are relevant. mabdul 10:08, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
Yes, I understand it perfectly, it's not exactly something that is hard to understand. I have also understood that it wouldn't help me doing anything at all, it would only help other editors by keeping the patrol queue down, as one can't patrol one's own created pages. In fact, the only one who doesn't understand here is you, as you still seem to believe, as it appears, that
  • it was a case of "hat collecting",
  • I have not understood what autopatrolling rights are.
In my first post above, I clearly explained that. The fact that you keep explaining something that doesn't need explaning (and never did) leads me to deduce that you have read my post above as sloppily as you did my autopatrol request.

speedy deletion of Adobe BrowserLab

Hi Mabdul,

You deleted the BrowserLab page that we created to describe an innovative and patented method to testing websites in browsers to accommodate users with handicaps such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, color blindness. I know this because I created this software for 2 years out of my little office and then was lucky enough to sell it to Adobe. The software (it was called MeerMeer before Adobe bought it) was very innovative at the time (2007) because it created virtual machines remotely and destroyed them very quickly. I didn't get wealthy from this software. Please undelete this page or help me understand how I can undelete it. I appreciate your help.

Hello Mabdul. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Wikipedia:Articles for creation/ECDL Foundation 2, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: R3 can no longer be used for redirects created as the result of a page move - the criterion changed back in May. Thank you. — Mr. Stradivarius (have a chat) 22:14, 22 August 2012 (UTC)

Mmmh, didn't know that... I blame the Signpost not informing me. ^^ mabdul 20:04, 1 September 2012 (UTC)

European University Sports Association

Hi, I have removed the CSD tag that you added from European University Sports Association as I don't believe it comes anywhere near A7. Feel free to list it for deletion discussion if you still believe it should be deleted. KTC (talk) 00:33, 24 August 2012 (UTC)

... because of? Sry, but only because it is a head organisation for multiple sport organisations doesn't sound for me in any kind of notable. mabdul 20:04, 1 September 2012 (UTC)

Wikidata weekly summary #20

Here's your quick overview of what has been happening around Wikidata over the last week.
  • Development
    • Pywikidata, developed by Joan Creus, was released \o/
    • Updated demo system
    • The repository part of the demo system had — believe it or not — too many entries from user and bot activity, apparently making it difficult to find a page to create. We truncated and filled it with about 100 chemical elements again
    • Started to implement new layout: this includes restructuring DOM and introducing an action column
    • Started refactoring of selenium tests layout
    • Finished most of the core of the phase 2 data model implementation
    • Created abstract storage interface for the repository
    • Started generalizing the secondary storage to work for all types of entities
    • Picked up work on the ContentHandler again, addressing concerns voiced by WMF staff and tying up loose ends
    • Started work on edit collision detection, will be changed as we observed unexpected side effects
    • The new API module for linking titles is live
    • Launched a demo client site in Hebrew
    • Various internationalization improvements and fixes
    • Revising the Special:ItemByTitle page on the repository
    • Special:ItemByLabel will become Special:ItemDisambiguation

Wikidata weekly summary #21

Here's your quick overview of what has been happening around Wikidata over the last week.
  • Development
    • Worked on version 2 of generic site handling in MediaWiki incorporating feedback from wikitech and mediawiki.org, as well as updating the WIkibase code to match
    • Rewrote SQLStore to accommodate phase 2 and phase 3 of Wikidata
    • Added maintenance script for rebuilding the store data
    • Implemented action column in user interface. All buttons for user-interaction are now aligned on the right side (for ltr-languages).
    • The language-code is now shown in a separate column in the site-links table
    • Started implementing sorting for site-link table columns
    • Lots of cleanup in JavaScript code
    • Edit conflict detection in a simple form is in place
    • Some minor changes to the API to support conflict detection, mostly “lastrevid” and “baserevid”
    • The configurable URL argument “usekeys” was removed. (Please check if your bots are still working.)
    • The special page “ItemByLabel” is about to be revitalized as a full “ItemDisambiguation” page

WP:FFU

Hi Mabdul. Did you ever hear anything back about uploading the video server-side at WP:FFU#Barack Obama and Google+? —JmaJeremy 19:03, 2 September 2012 (UTC)

Sry, that is my fault (more or less): I asked multiple users to try to upload that file and to fill the bug report (feel free to do it, otherwise leave it open and I will do it in a week) because I'm not able to do that at the moment. mabdul 19:50, 2 September 2012 (UTC)

AFCH v. Twinkle

Hello! Out of plain interest: did you consider making AFCH a Twinkle module? — Dmitrij D. Czarkoff (talktrack) 22:45, 4 September 2012 (UTC)

(at work) Not at the moment. I'm still learning JS and thus my skills are simply not good enough to add a hack. If I'm more familiar with the whole stuff (and finished the clean up work) I might reconsider to do this. But I doubt at the moment that this would be a good move: the AFC tool is only useful for people doing reviews in afc/userspace and TW is used by maaany persons doing NPP work, SPI stuff, article tagging and so on. The overlap of the "average" wikipedia contributor is not big enough to justify to "send the whole AFCH code" to every TW user. I might be wrong (because of the modules) and my to do list too long before I consider to proposing such a merge (say: not within a year until I might have "cleared" the list).
to my talkpagestalkers (and nathan): Although I don't have regular net access, I'm still developing in my spare time on my local machine. sadly I'm not really able to test the script, but the development is still ongoing, although rather slow... mabdul 12:20, 5 September 2012 (UTC)
Just for the record: Twinkle is modular, so one may enable Twinkle and AFCH (which may remain external module, out of Twinkle's code base) and disable everything else if desired so. — Dmitrij D. Czarkoff (talktrack) 12:49, 5 September 2012 (UTC)
I know, but as I said: I would love to do it, if we have a wide consensus with the AFC team, an "OK" of the TW devs and when/if my skills are better. I'm using this project only for learning and for fun. I got two good books of my university's library, but I simply have not enough time to read/learn it (house moving because of new job). mabdul 14:43, 5 September 2012 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) - I was going to respond to this last night but I had spent almost two hours finishing the release candidate... Anyway, any such a thing would require full consensus at WT:AFC, approval by the Twinkle team, plus we would have to have someone from Twinkle to help port the code (plus we want to empty the bug list first). As mabdul said, at least a year. I've found a great looking JavaScript course so I will take more time developing soon. @mabdul: I'm getting ready to create a public release candidate and move this update into ancient history. As stated above, I have merged all code from beta and my alpha into it. If there is anything from your alpha you want me to port, drop me a line and I'll work on it. Thanks, Nathan2055talk - contribs 20:05, 5 September 2012 (UTC)

I still want to draft a Twinkle rendition of the script. Where can I find the source code for AFCH? Is there a publicly-readable repository anywhere? — Dmitrij D. Czarkoff (talktrack) 10:47, 24 September 2012 (UTC)

Of course! The current live build (v4.1.15) is available at MediaWiki:Gadget-afchelper.js. As well, the latest beta build (v4.1.16rc1) is available at User:Nathan2055/afc releasecandidate.js. It's currently licensed under the Wikimedia Terms of Use, but we are working on a move to the GPL. Either way, feel free to hack on to it! --Nathan2055talk - contribs 20:12, 24 September 2012 (UTC)
Thanks! I hope I'll ultimately have some spare time to accomplish this... — Dmitrij D. Czarkoff (talktrack) 01:06, 25 September 2012 (UTC)
Cool! Good luck! --Nathan2055talk - contribs 19:18, 25 September 2012 (UTC)

Will you please help me with this article?

Hi Mabdul, I have created an article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Mulayrahul/sandbox. Will you pls take a look and let me know if this is okay? Thx RM (talk) 17:13, 7 September 2012 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) Looks like it has acquired good sourcing. Definitively recommend for launching. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 23:16, 11 September 2012 (UTC)

Houston (or Berlin in this case) we have a problem.

Resolved

A recent update to jQuery has altered jsMsg functionality, making the script distorted (see File:AFCH+MW=bad.PNG for an example). I am putting in the extra hours to try to get this working again, but it could delay the update for another week or more. As well, K7L (talk · contribs) has joined the project and has reported half a dozen script bugs in three days. I'll post them along with an updated changelog on the dev sheet. Finally, I am posting a section on WT:AFC about why the update is delayed as well as the bug fixes in it. I'll keep you posted, Nathan2055talk - contribs 00:51, 8 September 2012 (UTC)

It is already fixed by Timotheus Cananes, check the gadget code (the last update/diff). mabdul 14:59, 8 September 2012 (UTC)
._. Why doesn't anybody tell me these things? I'll see if I can find the time to write a patch to the release candidate today. Thanks, Nathan2055talk - contribs 15:39, 8 September 2012 (UTC)

Help!

Mabdul, I've had some computer issues and won't be able to code for a while. I have information on how to fix the comment bug here but I can't implement it. That along with the other bugs I've listed on the dev sheet need to be implemnted in the next release candidate. When you're done with that, have someone push over my old RC so K7L and the gang can test it. Thanks! --Nathan2055talk - contribs 18:22, 18 September 2012 (UTC)

Everything is back in working order, so I'll take over from here. Thanks, Nathan2055talk - contribs 03:11, 22 September 2012 (UTC)

AFCH bug

I left a note for Timotheus about it here, if you could look into it that would be appreciated. Thanks, LegoKontribsTalkM 21:19, 20 September 2012 (UTC)

Hi mabdul, just letting you know I'm going to continue to work on the AfC bot. I'm also interested in taking over some of the other bot tasks which are inactive once I've finished task 8. Thanks, Noom (t) 17:53, 22 September 2012 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) - Great, another person to compete with NathanBot (talk · contribs) for AfC tasks. :P Anyway, there are several things we need bots for, as well as several tasks which should be updated. I'll try and compile a list and post it on the AfC talk page. --Nathan2055talk - contribs 20:16, 24 September 2012 (UTC)
The (incomplete?) list was created a few months ago at Wikipedia:WPAFC#Bots. mabdul 06:11, 25 September 2012 (UTC)
There's also a list on the participants page, but it's fairly old. I'll try to update if I find some time (still have half a dozen bugs to fix before the next rc). Thanks, Nathan2055talk - contribs 19:17, 25 September 2012 (UTC)

Maybe I'm online in the chat this evening (Europe timezone ;-) ) to get a brief update by someone involved. mabdul 14:51, 30 September 2012 (UTC)
