Cornish Wrestling Throws moved to draftspace

[edit]

An article you recently created, Cornish Wrestling Throws, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. Please also note WP:NOTHOWTO. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. power~enwiki (π, ν) 04:54, 29 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination of Cornish Wrestling Heavyweight Belt

[edit]

Hello Mab an Garrek,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Cornish Wrestling Heavyweight Belt for deletion, because the article doesn't clearly indicate why the subject is important enough to be included in an encyclopedia.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Thanks!

The particular issue can be found in the notice that is now visible at the top of the article.

If you wish to contest the deletion:

  1. Edit the page
  2. Remove the text that looks like this: {{proposed deletion/dated...}}
  3. Click the Publish changes button.

If you object to the article's deletion, please remember to explain why you think the article should be kept on the article's talk page and improve the page to address the issues raised in the deletion notice. Otherwise, it may be deleted later by other means.

If you have any questions, please leave a comment here and prepend it with {{Re|JJPMaster}}. And remember to sign your reply with ~~~~. Thanks!

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Jacket wrestling, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Britain. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Thank you for contributing so much to the Cornish wrestling article. I was thinking about doing a Cornish language version, but was wondering if you have a list of Cornish language terms for wrestling throws already, before I search for one elsewhere. Keep up the good work. Brwynog (talk) 18:32, 31 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Dydh da ow howeth
I am chair of the Akademi Kernewek who have published wrestling terms - published on the AK website.
The Cornish Wrestling Association has a version of Bryan Kendall's Art of Cornish Wrestling that has been translated into Cornish, which is meant to be published shortly, which should also help.
The Cornish Wrestling Throws page on Wiki includes Cornish language names for the throws along with associated references.

Redruth

[edit]

Hi, you are adding far too much specialist information about Cornish Wrestling into a general article. The article is about the town not about the wrestling. It is just as bad as football fans trying to put the entire history of their teams into the articles about the local towns. Keep that information for the relevant pages about the wrestling and the biographies of the notable wrestlers. Regards Murgatroyd49 (talk) 10:45, 4 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I have cut it down a lot. However, you appear to not know that Cornish wrestling (the national sport of Cornwall) was the main hobby, if not the only hobby, of Cornishmen for centuries, possibly millennia. Redruth was a particular centre for this. The history of Redruth is interlinked with that of wrestling. The article is adding a tiny snapshot of wrestling in Redruth - eg NOT including the details 100s of tournaments (many claiming to be for UK or Devon/Cornwall titles). This is NOT including the names of the 100s of wrestlers coming from Redruth who had success. NOT including the details of prizes, titles, attendance of matches and tournaments over the last 250 years.
All I have done is try to
  • say where major wrestling tournaments occurred (note that this is an issue locally as there are issues about protecting some of the sites where tournaments have happened)
  • Give the details of 1 tournament and 2 challenge matches for the world heavyweight title (details of which were reported in newspapers throughout the world) and
  • Describe why 4 people from Redruth became famous throughout the world for their wrestling.
This is small in the context of how import wrestling has been to Redruth. I would put it the other way, the small size of the section is only appropriate because Cornish wrestling is no longer as popular as it once was.
You describe me as being "as bad as football fans trying to put the entire history of their teams into the articles about the local towns". This is ludicrous in the context of how small a proportion of the associated history is proposed to be put into the article. Mab an Garrek (talk) 13:30, 4 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
We will have to agree to disagree on this. Details of people biting someone's ear off is hardly vital information in this context. And yes I do know something about Cornish Wrestling. Murgatroyd49 (talk) 13:36, 4 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that biting someone's ear off is not vital information, however, I have found that details like this give life to articles and are often the most interesting parts to the neutral reader. If you insist on removing this on the basis that it is not vital information, I cannot argue.
If you know something about Omdowl then you will know what I mean about the cultural context as to why details of local wrestling are important to help understand the specifics of Cornish towns. Mab an Garrek (talk) 13:42, 4 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed your contributions concerning Cornish wrestling (especially the print sources) and was wondering if any of your sources feature Lancashire/Wigan catch wrestling as well. Or if you'd be able to point me to some things. For context, I'm currently working on an article about The Snake Pit/Riley's Gym/Aspull Wrestling Club and want to be as thorough as possible. Spagooder (talk) 22:31, 6 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Spagooder - yes there are references to Lancashire wrestling, though more from the later 1800s onwards rather than earlier. I use digital archives (such as the British Newspaper Archive) and you can search these for key words or phrases. Having said that you will still need a lot of time to sift through the resultant search results. Good luck with your endeavours. Mab an Garrek (talk) 14:30, 8 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also the Library of Congress is good for US digital sources and Trove is great for Australia and New Zealand digital sources.Mab an Garrek (talk) 14:33, 8 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the info. Looks like they were reporting on Wigan wrestling as far away as Australia: https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/84207383?browse=ndp%3Abrowse%2Ftitle%2FD%2Ftitle%2F275%2F1931%2F10%2F10%2Fpage%2F8417184%2Farticle%2F84207383
I'm looking for stuff on Billy Riley and The Snake Pit, so it's good to know there's material from those eras. Also looking at fixing up the Lancashire wrestling and catch articles in time, but that's earlier 1800s. Do you have a subscription to the BNA or is there another way to get the info that you want? I see the little blurbs and it's just 3 free articles. Spagooder (talk) 01:37, 16 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have a BNA subscription. If you do enough submissions Wiki you qualify for their libraries which include some of the genealogy websites which are also good.Mab an Garrek (talk) 11:15, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the reminders, keep forgetting about the WP Library since most of it is scholarly journals, found some more good stuff. Was that the BNA subscription through the library? It says Ancestry.com has a service issue right now, but what sort of related stuff would one expect to find there? Spagooder (talk) 15:14, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have BNA subscription separately. From Wiki I use: newspapers.com and newspaperarchive.com and seem to get some hits from their search engine that I don't get from BNA (and vice versa).Mab an Garrek (talk) 09:14, 26 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks again for the reminders and info, they've really helped me get some good material. Spagooder (talk) 16:49, 31 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
