Multilingualism

[edit]
[originally posted to user talk:RHaworth]

Hi there, a page that my group worked diligently to add and contribute was deleted because of "misuse of Wikipedia as a web host". I do not understand this rationale. The language acquisition page was missing four specific aspects of language development, which we added following guidelines, all based on academic information. I would appreciate if you could restore would editing so we see we did not work in vain. Also, for future reference, I would appreciate it if you could explain why our contribution was seen as "misuse as a web host". Thanks, MLclass (talk) 06:20, 5 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Please learn to provide a link when you talk about a page. "Misuse as a web host" applied because a user page is meant for the user to tell us about themselves. Draft stuff must be kept in user sub-pages. But what are you fussing about - as well as the page I deleted you had a 44 kbyte draft sitting at User:MLclass/sandbox.
I have restored and merged all your draft edits at draft:Multilingualism in Israel. I am dubious about whether this will ever pass muster as a Wikipedia article. The fact that your group had been working on it for six months and had not managed to add even one <ref> suggests strongly that you viewed it as a student essay rather than an encyclopedia article. Note that articles are not allowed to exist indefinitely in draft space.
I have blocked this account since, by your own admission, it appears to be being used by more than one person. Each of these people is welcome to create an account for themselves, the password of which is not to be shared. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 19:56, 5 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
RHaworth, I've restored the content of the page. It was done as a class project and the students should have separate accounts. But the article has many references, though cited in parenthetical style, (Bekerman and Shhadi, 2003), rather than using ref tags. MLclass, create individual accounts for yourselves. Read Help:Referencing for beginners to learn how to do references in Wikipedia style. You need to provide page numbers for your sources also. See Wikipedia:Citation templates for templates that make it easy to cite books, encyclopedias, and journal articles. Provide English translations for titles and authors of Hebrew publications.
Now to the major problem with your article. You have combined a set of student essays into an article. Student papers are supposed to show that you have researched a subject and drawn conclusions. A Wikipedia article does not do this. Read Wikipedia:No original research. Everything you write must have been written about somewhere else first, and shown by providing a reference. Every conclusion must have been made elsewhere first, with a written source provided. Much of your article is good statement of fact with references. Everything else must be rewritten or removed. The "General Overview" section is a particular problem. Writing a full encyclopedia article is not easy, but it will be a good experience for you. Hello, MLclass. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "Multilingualism in Israel".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}}, {{db-draft}}, or {{db-g13}} code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Thanks for your submission to Wikipedia, and happy editing. Legacypac (talk) 01:24, 13 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
