Recent changes
- The parameter for unpatrolled edits in recent changes filters changed name. You might need to update saved filters and links. [1]
Problems
- We are migrating wikis from Tidy to Remex. Because of a bug the 250 wikis which do not yet use Remex were switched on 23 April. This is two months early. This meant that pages with broken wikitext showed wrongly to readers. The bug was undone the next day. You can help fix broken wikitext to avoid this problem when your wiki switches. Tidy will be removed on all wikis before July 2018. You can follow the process on Phabricator. [2]
Changes later this week
- You will be able use CodeMirror in the 2017 wikitext editor on all wikis. CodeMirror helps with syntax highlighting. It has previously been a beta feature and only available on wikis with scripts that are written from left to right. [3]
- When an administrator blocks someone they will have a calendar they can use to choose when the block ends. This is to make it easier to pick a specific date. [4]
- You can soon turn on the Performance Inspector in the Editing section in your preferences. It shows information about the performance of pages. This could be the size of modules in the page, how many CSS selectors are defined on the page and how many are used, or the size of the images on the page. This tool is intended to help editors fix pages that load slowly. [5]
- There is a new abuse filter function called
equals_to_any
. You can use it to check if its first argument is equal (===
) to any of the following ones. For example you can use it to check if the page's namespace is amongst a given set of values in a more compact way than you could earlier. You can read more on mediawiki.org. - The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 1 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 2 May. It will be on all wikis from 3 May (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the Editing team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 1 May at 18:30 (UTC). See how to join.
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 2 May at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- The Wikimedia Cloud Services team is working on a new project called Toolhub. The goal is to make it easier for Wikimedians to discover software tools they can use. You can leave feedback on the talk page or email jharewikimedia.org to leave private feedback.
- All wikis with fewer than 100 high-priority linter errors in all namespaces will switch to use the Remex parsing library. This is to replace Tidy. It will happen on 2 May. Other wikis will be recommended to switch soon when they have fixed the errors that must be fixed. Wikibooks wikis with fewer than 100 high-priority linter errors in the main namespace will switch on 9 May. Tidy will be removed on all wikis before July 2018. [6][7][8]

WikiCup 2018 May newsletter
The second round of the 2018 WikiCup has now finished. Most contestants who advanced to the next round scored upwards of 100 points, but two with just 10 points managed to scrape through into round 3. Our top scorers in the last round were:
- Cas Liber, our winner in 2016, with three featured articles
- Iazyges, with nine good articles and lots of bonus points
- Yashthepunisher, a first time contestant, with two featured lists
- SounderBruce, a finalist last year, with seventeen good topic articles
- Usernameunique, a first time contestant, with fourteen DYKs
- Muboshgu, a seasoned competitor, with three ITNs and
- Courcelles, another first time contestant, with twenty-seven GARs
So far contestants have achieved twelve featured articles between them and a splendid 124 good articles. Commendably, 326 GARs have been completed during the course of the 2018 WikiCup, so the backlog of articles awaiting GA review has been reduced as a result of contestants' activities. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met; most of the GARs are fine, but a few have been a bit skimpy.
If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Have you even read the source?
I added my own wording to Indo-Aryan migration. Some wording might be similar because I can't make up my own interpretation, but I didn't copy it verbatrim. As for "outdated" translation of the verse, the verse is still translated so. This 2014 translation translates it in the similar manner (https://books.google.com/books?id=5-i0AwAAQBAJ&pg=PA484).
Your claims are bad faith. I don't have any problem if your issues are genuine. But don't make up false claims and accusations. I am not going to be cowed down by any threats. If you have real issues, then I wouldn't have minded you undoing me. But your reasons are not genuine.
If you do have real issues then we can discuss. I suggest you first read the source. Then explain how there is a violation. I can change the wording in case there is. Besides I had made the edit just once. But if you have no real issues, I suggest you don't censor others. MonsterHunter32 (talk) 04:54, 30 April 2018 (UTC)
- Here's your text:
Irfan Habib and Vijay Kumar Thakur state that the distinctions presented in the Rig Veda between the Dasyus and the Aryans who spoke Indo-Iranian dialects, suggest that they hadn't moved in from the cooler highlands and higher altitudes much earlier, thus still preserving a distinction in their complexion from the older inhabitants of the tropical plains. They consider a verse from Rig Veda's Mandala VI (47.20-21) as evidently evoking a time of such migration
- Here's the relevant excerpt from the source:
All this strongly suggests that the Aryans, as speakers of Indo-Iranian dialects, had not much earlier moved in from cooler highlands or higher latitudes so as still to preserve a sense of distinction between their complexionand that of the older inhabitants of the tropical plains. The following verse from Rig- veda's Mandala VI (47.20-21) evidently evokes a time of such migration
- That's clear copyright violation. And, like I said, the translation is outdated too. See, for example, this book from 1958 that use the same translation.[9] There is no modern reliable source that use this outdated translation. You should better know how much scholarships have changed in these many decades regarding these translations, that's why we can't use an outdated translation as it will contradict nearly whole article. MBlaze Lightning talk 12:35, 30 April 2018 (UTC)
- Oh, and for your own sake, watch your tone and lay off the censorship accusations, or you will find yourself at WP:ANI. You've been warned before.[10]

Please leave edit summaries. I'm tempted to block the IP, but I can't block them in good faith when you're doing the same thing, and you've reverted them four times already. Razer2115, that goes for you too. Neither of you left explanations/edit summaries, neither of you tried to talk the IP editor--y'all didn't even template them for edit warring or whatever. Now that I look at the rest of their edits I see that there is plenty of reason for me to block them, but if you two had been more diligent and didn't take the easy way out I wouldn't have to be wasting my time here or investigating the other edits the IP editor made. Drmies (talk) 17:30, 5 May 2018 (UTC)
- @Drmies: I said in my first edit summary that I was reverting a sock of a blocked user.[11] Perhaps you overlooked it? MBlaze Lightning talk 17:48, 5 May 2018 (UTC)
- Yes, but look at that history--that's 20 edits down the page. I see it now, but that's not easy. Please make these things easy for us. And who? Can you link an SPI? All of that helps. In the meantime I placed a range block. Drmies (talk) 17:52, 5 May 2018 (UTC)

Recent changes
- The Wikimedia Commons mobile app has a new version. It is now easier to find nearby places that need pictures. It helps you with direct uploads and title and category suggestions. The app only works on Android phones. [12]
Problems
- The abuse filters had a problem with blocks where you had changed how long they last. It used the default length everywhere. This was in late April. Abuse filter users should make sure the right block length is used and change them if needed. This is only for filters where how long blocks last had been changed. [13]
Changes later this week
- The advanced search function beta feature will be on all Wikimedia wikis. It makes it easier to use some of the special search functions that most editors don't know exist. [14]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 8 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 9 May. It will be on all wikis from 10 May (calendar).

Stalking IP
Hi MBlaze Lightning, who is this IP which seems to be following a set of editors around? Do we have anything about them? Thanks. Adamgerber80 (talk) 17:37, 6 May 2018 (UTC)
- It's this guy. MBlaze Lightning talk 17:39, 6 May 2018 (UTC)
- Okay. I get their POV pushing direction. What triggered this vicious stalking? Recent block of their sock? Adamgerber80 (talk) 17:44, 6 May 2018 (UTC)
- MBlaze reverted him on an article just like you did, and this sock went crazy after realizing that its impossible for him to get his POV accepted here. Capitals00 (talk) 17:48, 6 May 2018 (UTC)
- Okay. I have dealt with a different vicious stalking IP (Taiwan articles related) back in the day and MBlaze Lightning was briefly part of it. We might have to consider creating a page like this User:Mfb/Taiwanese articles if it persists for a few more days. The page helped in creating a central place where, all IPs being used, could be logged (since it is not feasible to create a SPI for every IP) and a good reference point for admins to block the IP off. Adamgerber80 (talk) 17:55, 6 May 2018 (UTC)

Gomutra
I've blocked the IP editor warring over the article for block evasion. That said, I would strongly advise against reinstating content like this without first finding reliable sources. The page comes under the jurisdiction of ARBIPA, and you really don't want to be adding original research. Vanamonde (talk) 06:59, 8 May 2018 (UTC)
- Vanamonde93 as you can see, I was merely reverting the sock IP (see Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations/Wikiexplorer13) who has been causing massive vandalism and disruption across many articles. The content that the IP was removing seemed unsourced, but not incorrect; it didn't struck me as a violation of WP:BLP, WP:COPYVIO, etc. Anyway, D4iNa4 has added sources, so I think we can put this to bed. MBlaze Lightning talk 08:09, 8 May 2018 (UTC)
- I can see that; that's why I haven't hauled you off to ANI. My point is that reverting a blocked sock isn't a license to revert anything; you still have to be careful, especially about core policies in an area covered by discretionary sanctions. I have no intentions of taking this further; this is a warning for the future, because it's a scenario likely to recur with other pages and other socks. Vanamonde (talk) 08:22, 8 May 2018 (UTC)

Notice that you are now subject to an arbitration enforcement topic ban
The following topic ban now applies to you:
You are indefinitely banned from all edits and pages related to conflict between India and Pakistan, broadly construed. You are warned that any further disruption or testing of the edges of the ban will be met with either an indefinite topic ban from all topics related to India, Pakistan and Afghanistan or an indefinite block, without further warning.
You have been sanctioned per this AE discussion.
This topic ban is imposed in my capacity as an uninvolved administrator under the authority of the Arbitration Committee's decision at Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/India-Pakistan#Final decision and, if applicable, the procedure described at Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee/Discretionary sanctions. This sanction has been recorded in the log of sanctions. Please go to WP:TBAN and read the information there to see what a topic ban is. If you do not comply with the topic ban, you may be blocked for an extended period, to enforce the ban.
If you wish to appeal against the imposition of the ban, see WP:AC/DS#sanctions.appeals which explains the ways in which you may appeal. Additionally, you may ask for this sanction to be removed at the arbitration enforcement noticeboard after six months of positive contributions to Wikipedia. Recent changes
- You can now use global preferences on most wikis. This means you can set preferences for all wikis at the same time. Before this you had to change them on each individual wiki. Global preferences will come to the Wikipedias later this week. [19][20]
- It is now easier for blocked mobile users to see why they were blocked. [21]
- Wikidata now supports lexicographical data. This helps describe words.
- There is now a checkbox on Special:ListUsers to let you see only users in temporary user groups. [22]
- Some rare invisible Unicode characters have recently been banned from page titles. This includes soft hyphens (U+00AD) and left-to-right (U+2066) and right-to-left (U+2067) isolate markers. Existing pages with these characters will soon be moved by a script. [23]
- There's a new Wikimedia Foundation team to support the Wikimedia technical communities. It's called the Technical Engagement team. Most of the team members did similar work in other teams before this. [24]
Problems
- Some translatable pages are showing old translations instead of latest ones. The cause of this issue has been fixed. We will update all pages automatically to show the latest translations. [25]
Changes later this week
- There will be a new special page named PasswordPolicies. This page gives information about the password rules for each user group on that wiki. [26]
- A new way to see moved paragraphs in diffs is coming to most wikis. This is to make it easier to find the moved paragraphs and the changes in them. [27]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 29 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 30 May. It will be on all wikis from 31 May (calendar).
- Wikis can enable Citoid to provide automatic reference look-up in the visual editor and the 2017 wikitext editor. This is complex. The tool will now disable itself if the configuration isn't correct. It has warned about this in the JavaScript console since February. Check that your wiki is configured correctly. You can ask for help if you need it. [28]
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the Editing team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 29 May at 18:30 (UTC). See how to join.
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 30 May at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- Content Translation drafts which have not been updated in over a year will be removed. This allows other users to translate those articles. [29]
- A survey is collecting information on what users think about how Wikimedia wiki pages are loaded. This information could be used in future development. [30]
- Some wikis will switch to use the Remex parsing library. This is to replace Tidy. It will happen on 30 May and 13 June. Wikis with fewer than 100 linter issues in the main namespace in all high-priority linter categories will switch. This includes Wikidata. Tidy will probably be removed on all wikis in the first week of July. [31][32]

June 2018 GOCE newsletter
Guild of Copy Editors June 2018 News
Welcome to the June 2018 GOCE newsletter, in which you will find Guild updates since the February edition. Progress continues to be made on the copyediting backlog, which has been reduced to 7 months and reached a new all-time low. Requests continue to be handled efficiently this year, with 272 completed by the end of May (an average completion time of 10.5 days). Fewer than 10% of these waited longer than 20 days, and the longest wait time was 29 days. Wikipedia in general, and the Guild in particular, experienced a deep loss with the death on 20 March of Corinne. Corinne (a GOCE coordinator since 1 July 2016) was a tireless aide on the requests page, and her peerless copyediting is a part of innumerable GAs and FAs. Her good cheer, courtesy and tact are very much missed. March drive: The goal was to remove June, July and August 2017 from our backlog and all February 2018 Requests (a total of 219 articles). This drive was an outstanding success, and by the end of the month all but eight of these articles were cleared. Of the 33 editors who signed up, 19 recorded 277 copy edits (425,758 words). April blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 15 through 21 April, focusing on Requests and the last eight articles tagged in August 2017. At the end of the week there were only 17 pending requests, with none older than 17 days. Of the nine editors who signed up, eight editors completed 22 copy edits (62,412 words). May drive: We set out to remove September, October and November 2017 from our backlog and all April 2018 Requests (a total of 298 articles). There was great success this month with the backlog more than halved from 1,449 articles at the beginning of the month to a record low of 716 articles. Officially, of the 20 who signed up, 15 editors recorded 151 copy edits (248,813 words). Coordinator elections: It's election time again. Nominations for Guild coordinators (who will serve a six-month term for the second half of 2018) have begun, and will close at 23:59 UTC on 15 June. All Wikipedia editors in good standing are eligible, and self-nominations are encouraged. Voting will take place between 00:01 UTC on 16 June and 23:59 UTC on 30 June. June blitz: Stay tuned for this one-week copy-editing blitz, which will take place in mid-June. Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators: Corinne, Jonesey95, Miniapolis, Reidgreg and Tdslk. To discontinue receiving GOCE newsletters, please remove your name from our mailing list.

West Indian cricket team in England in 1991
Hi,
My change is correct - the sentence "England, by contrast with the previous disastrous tour of 1998, were a far more settled side...", and here 1998 makes no sense given that this page is about the 1991 tour. 1988 is definitely correct if you look at that page and read about what happened on the 1988 tour. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.26.115.33 (talk) 14:00, 9 June 2018 (UTC)
