Service areas

With regard to the Champion Schools article

There is a list of the BARLA service areas in the BARLA article, there are some mistakes in the article at present: Bridgend isn't a service area Wales would be correct, Keighley ought to be Bradford and Featherstone and Castleford should be Wakefield.

I don't think listing the service area is a good idea though, it means nothing to people outside rugby league, isn't relevant to the tournament (which is not a BARLA tournament in any case) and can be misleading (Keighley is the Bradford service area but Keighley isn't Bradford).

Better to just list the town followed by which county it is in.GordyB (talk) 10:07, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

Glad to see someone else making good contributions to European rugby league articles. But I'm not sure what you've done with the Rugby Football League seasons template is a good idea. Super League seasons shouldn't be under the same banner, as this was not just a change of name, but a change of organisation, winter to summer, etc. And dividing up all the pre-Super League seasons (into NRFU, RFL, etc.) I think is unnecessary because I understand that they were merely name changes, not organisational changes. No worries. The thing we need to decide is if the Super League only template stays. The idea with templates I think is that they go on articles that they link to, and also if a template links to an article it should appear in that article. So the RFL template (as it is now) should be appearing in SL articles, as it contains links to them. In which case the Super League template should go. Which I'm not sure about, because Super League is the current embodiment of the competition (and so somewhat more relevant/significant), and I'm happy with the way the template on super league articles is called "Super League", y'know? I dunno if I'd like the Super League articles to contain a template called "Rugby Football League". I know what you mean with the NRL template. I'm far more familiar with that situation than with the English situation. In that template we don't make any distinction between New South Wales Rugby Football League seasons and New South Wales Rugby League (since 1984) seasons because that was just a name change (Much like Northern Rugby Football League to Rugby Football League, I think). Also the ARL was effectively the same organisation as the NSWRL and was also pretty much just a re-branding. The NRL did represent a more major shakeup of things, but I think less than that of Super League in England. Here it remained a winter season and all parties agreed that (club, player, etc.) records would continue unbroken from pre-NRL times. Not sure if that's the case with Super League or not. But it did become distinctly separate from clubs not in the top flight didn't it? I understand that in RFL times, it was just the RFL with first and second division. But now we have Super League, distinct from National Leagues One and Two. Festival of WCs

Hey. Just wanted to get your thoughts on the name. I feel the current Festival of World Cups is too generic, as it could refer to any sport or any year. Thats why I originally had 2008 Rugby League Festival of World Cups as the title. As you seem to know a bit more about this than I do. Could you take a look at this article? The info comes from their website but conflicts somewhat with what is written on History of the Rugby League Conference. The Great Schism

I was reading over some of the rugby stuff in the Sport in the United Kingdom article, which you edited, about the "great schism" between league and union. I was adamant the story went beyond cultural differences between the working and middle classes, and after some digging I found I was right, as this article from the Independent in 1994 points out. The authorities that ruled union actively sought to ban anyone even representing rugby league in any way. Since you seem interested in this subject, I thought I'd pass it on. How close are you to considering that Super League play-off template complete? Use the most used term, which would be "St Helens", but since that would already apply to the town, "St Helens RLFC" would be next best in my opinion. Others have been kept to abbreviations, such as: Manchester United F.C., Hull F.C. and Harlequins F.C.. GW(talk) 16:05, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

Rule changes

Thanks! I feel the same, it's really interesting to see how the game has been shaped over time. The very early stuff is, as you know, British from before 1907. The person who I've seen go into most detail on this kind of thing is Sean Fagan (rl1908.com). He goes into the detail of the past giving more context, e.g. good old newspaper articles. I haven't had a chance to go through all of his articles yet but some are great, quite a few of them are based on his historical RL books. There is one, it might have been pre-schism, when a touring England captain is explaining to the Aussies how a new rule works back home. I think the general rule is early rules were changed (or reverted) by Britain and later ones by Australia, for example Greg McCallum bringing in new things to the British game from Aus. Unfortunately, I don't own a quality comprehensive source, the RLW source I'm working from now is a brief "top 10 good rules and top 10 bad ones" thing but by giving me the years, I hopefully will be able to go through my dad's old Open Rugby mags at some point from those seasons to see what is written. St Helens RLFC

I noticed you gave the history section of the article a C rating. If this apart alone was worth that rating, then it is my point of view that the main article would be worthy of that or higher. The article was reviewed some months ago by Special Windler and he kept it a Start but I have carried out a lot of the pointers he suggested along with referencing the article thoroughly. I have additionally added images where necessary. I would be grateful if you would consider reviewing the article and constructive suggestions would also be vastly appreciated.

I thought this article, supported by the extensive referencing, had moved beyond a start class and was good enough to merit a C rating; so your efforts and Windler's have given a good boost here in my brief assessment. I'm not experienced in thorough assessments though but could give it a go, although I suggest you try GingerWarrior first as he has recently put himself on the assessment list (if I recall) at WP:RL and has some past experience. Have a look at Sydney Roosters (a featured article) as well as the History of the Sydney Roosters article for an idea of best practice (and other sports club articles). The rating for the main St Helens article is for the whole thing so having one good section won't mean the rest is ignored in the assessment, they will need to be worked on too. Having too long a history section (if it is too long) will probably count against you for style and efficient selection of information. That's my layman's opinion but I don't have any higher class assessment criteria to quote because its not something I've got into. GW might know more. Lunar is right, the article is judged holistically. Having a hypothetical section of featured article quality won't compensate for the rest of the article. "When a section is a summary of another article that provides a full exposition of the section, a link to that article should appear immediately under the section heading. You can use the {{Main}} template to generate a Main article; link." - Wikipedia:Layout#Section_templates_and_summary_style

Super League XV ladder

Hi Lunar, regarding your reverted changes of the header for the {{Super League XV ladder}} ladder from Engage Super League XV to Super League XV. I believe that the sponsorship should be included in the header as due to sponsorship the league has to be referred to in media as the Engage Super League XV.

Same applies for the Championship and Championship 1, due to sponsorship they have have to be referred to in media as Co-Operative Championship and Co-Operative Championship 1.

It makes sense to have the main article about Super League just entitled Super League. But the individual years the league was sponsored by different organisations, the season article for those years (e.g. Super League XIV) and the ladder for those years should reflect the correct name for the league that year, which would include the sponsorship as part of the name.

What do you think? Is this maybe a discussion we should open up on the project page?

Hey there John, I see that referral to the sponsorship as a courtesy at the time of the competition but the brand is "Super League" and past competitions are not referred to with the sponsorship name.

Generally I am against titling using the sponsorship but there are cases for it. Things like the Regal Trophy and, as you mentioned, the Co-operative Championship, I go along with. In the championship's case, mainly because they chop and change names and formats so often and because the coverage of those lower leagues on wikipedia is a bit of a mess anyway right now.

I doubt there'd be support for changing the SL article names. The seasons when the NSWRL season was called the Winfield Cup are just called YYYY NSWRL season. I prefer the format: "The 2009 Challenge Cup (known as the Carnegie Challenge Cup due to sponsorship)" with the article name being "2009 Challenge Cup".

On the SL ladder template, I thought it was unnecessary (because the articles it is on can mention sponsorship if needed in their lead as I gave the example above) and kind of cheapened the it.

By all means, open a discussion on the project page (on any topic because it would be good to increase the activity on there) about this but I think formats are fairly well established. LunarLander // talk // 14:51, 13 January 2010 (UTC)

Sorry for WikiStalking, but I'm pretty sure using company names is banned under Wikipedia's MoS. I just can't find where I've read it before. I think the most that's allowed is a "(also known as Engage Super League XV for sponsorship reasons)" in an article entitled "Super League XV", since the league is the subject of the article, not that engage happen to sponsor it. I think you can try to put it together with the different patterns from Template:Football kit/pattern list. The team templates need sorting out. No consensus

I noticed this edit and thought you may be under a misapprehension about how things work around here. In a content dispute, the onus is on the person wishing to retain the material to demonstrate a consensus. As you have been the only one arguing for its retention, with a couple of people arguing for its removal there is therefore no consensus to retain it and it goes. The underlying principles which this icon breaches are WP:ICONDECORATION and WP:NOR; if you felt strongly enough you might consider raising the question at those guidelines' talk pages. Who won the Lancashire League this season? I'm confused beacuse [saints.org.uk] says St Helens did, but the season and county leagues articles say that Oldham won it.

Featherstone RUFC

Hi, I notice that you have made contributions to the Featherstone article. The current rugby league club, Featherstone Rovers, wasn't founded until 1902, and appears to have no links to the earlier rugby union (RU) club. However, I have contributed to an article about James "Jimmy" Metcalfe, and I have found details of him playing for Yorkshire (RU) in 1896/7 while playing at Featherstone (RU), would you have any information about the RU club of the 1800s in Featherstone. Crusaders

Hi Dynamo, I've just seen all the work you've been doing with editing piped links (a lot!). With the Crusaders ones though, I noticed a few edits where you have changed pre-2010 articles to show just 'Crusaders' when their name was 'Celtic Crusaders' at the time. Stuck between styles

After looking through precedent GA season articles from WP:FOOTY, and reading WP:LENGTH, I'm convinced my style of writing on the 2009 Wigan Warriors season page was WAY too long. Some of the football articles were giving one sentence per game, let alone up to two paragraphs like I was. Trouble is a game of rugby league isn't easy to document in one sentence, so I've generally limited myself to a 'four sentences per chronological week' rule, that limit also including pre- and post-match news. This seems to have halved the amount I'm writing whilst still mentioning the key bits in each game. According to my approx calculations, the article should be of a good length come the season's end. You can see an example of this in the 2011 Wigan Warriors season article. February is the old style, March is the new one. Which do you prefer, and is March good enough?

Secondly, now I'm not including every single piece of detail about every single game in the main body, the small infoboxes I made on the 2009 page actually have a use; for mentioning the parts of the game I haven't put in the body. Should I put them in?

I think the March style is fine in length and detail. It gets to the key points with less reading. If you, personally, wanted to get more down, you could still go into more detail on more memorable or significant matches. The new style would also make it easier for someone to do a similar thing for other clubs.

A lot of what appeals me to Wikipedia is the process of raising articles to GA quality (and FA if I should ever be so lucky). v d e links on {{Rls}} templates

Hi there, over in the AFL world we've started switching over from a fairly basic and boring NFL team squad based table to the much prettier Rls template. The one thing that I would like to add, but aren't sure how, is the view/discuss/edit links to enable quick editing of the template. It used to be done by the {{navbar|PAGENAME|plain=1|nodiv=1}} template. Any idea how to add it, maybe only if navbar=yes is set or similar. I don't know enough about template syntax to do it myself. Hi, I've updated the template. There is now a templatename field that can link view talk edit to the template you're using. If the template has been added straight to a page the templatename field can be left unused and only edit will show. Clicking it will open that page for editing. Thanks for that - I've removed the "edit" from appearing by default, mainly because if it's transcluded, then the wrong page is editted, and if it isn't transcluded, then the normal edit tag at the top of the page or at each section break will work as per normal. Change of use of Widnes F.C.

Item 65 in your Archive (dated October 2012) concerned the proposed deletion of Widnes F.C., the reason at the time being that it referred to a football club (soccer variety) which was not notable, as it had been denied admission to step 6 of the English Football pyramid. Since then the club has been admitted, albeit under a different name Widnes Vikings F.C.. This summer the club has changed its name to Widnes F.C., so it would seem sensible to use this page on Wiki. However, since October 2012 presumably, the page has been turned into a link to Widnes Vikings RLFC, which is a rugby league club, rather than a football (soccer) club. There are very few links to the page, all of which are currently being diverted to the RL club, and all the recent ones (some by me) seem to have been made by mistake, expecting them to be directed to the football club's page. Is there any problem in my changing the purpose of this page, either by making it a redirect to Widnes Vikings F.C., or preferably to move the existing Widnes Vikings F.C. page to this page? Hi Drawoh, thanks for getting in touch. The page was redirected to the rugby league football club when created several years before, in fact. I've looked for information on the AFC club but haven't found anything that convinces me to support changing the purpose of the page for now. The club doesn't seem to meet WP:FOOTYN, which states a club is notable when in a "national level of the league structure" - the North West Counties is regional. The local newspaper doesn't have a section for this club like it does for other local sporting teams and there doesn't seem to have been any news reporting on the team since 2012 when they had to change their name from Widnes Town because it was already being used.
