The wick effect

Hi,

There is a problem with The wick effect that needs an admin to fix. Could you either help with sorting out a move / redirect problem or point me to the correct place to have this fixed. We would like to move The wick effect to the more correct title "Wick effect" but can not do this as Wick effect currently redirects to Spontaneous human combustion and so the redirect needs deleting. However, it does not seem to meet the speedy requierments and I think a VfD would be overkill. The problem has been listed on Wikipedia:Requested moves for some time, but it seems lost behind arguments about moving things.

Linuxbeak 2

Just to let you know: in the German wiki a vandal (Linuxbeak) appears to have copied your username and every contribution of his replaced the article with this senseless sentence (as well as as edit summary): "Alex Schenck was butt-raped by his father multiple times. He eventually started liking it, and now he is a pedophile who himself butt-rapes little boys." Searching for "Alex Schenck" with Google lead me to your userpage, and it is your name. He is now banned after only fifteen minutes of contributing, but since he never expressed himself in the German language (maybe he cannot even speak German), he might also poison the wikis of other languages. I don't know what you could do about it - after all he's more likely to be banned long before you could find him - but, like I said, just to let you know. This might be among the most absurd, but not the least innovative none the less, way of vandalism against other contributors that Wikipedia has ever seen. =)NightBeAsT 21:31, 24 September 2005 (UTC)

Tampering with user pages

Believe me, I am no fan of JarlaxleArtemis. Dig in the archive of his talk page and you're sure to see signs of a spat with me. Actually I think he's particularly noxious and his past misdemeanors are why his page is on my watchlist. Which is why I noticed this edit of yours to it. I'm not completely happy with your removal of his somewhat self-aggrandizing list of accomplishments, but really can't bring myself to make it an issue. However, adding something to it in the first person, without signing it, is very poor practice. Specifically, your addition of "I am now now [sic] banned from Wikipedia thanks to my bad attitude and my trollish behavior." Nobody, least of all an administrator (no matter how provoked), should put words in others' mouths. I'm sorry that I thought you were a vandal, and even have asked that on the IRC. But you may not know this yet. As a dutch user i'm active on the Afrikaanse Wikipedia: af: and recently someone made stupidname account. See this. I am personal responsible for blocking this vandal on 'infinite' because some research I made earlier that day found out that this was a regular vandal on the English Wikipedia. I will patrol on the Dutch, the Afrikaans and the Danish wikipedia to watch for more of these stupidname accounts are made. O if you want to know you're dealing with. Articles for deletion/Ali ibn Abu Talib (Radiallahuanhu)

Hi, I notice you've done the redirect which seems to be the most sensible course of action. I'm not clear what follow-up action, if any, is necessary. The article creator felt that (Radiallahuanhu) was a necessary addition and someone else put it up for deletion arguing that was a Sunni point of view. What seemed to emerge from the limited discussion was that some note should be made on the Ali ibn Abu Talib page that there were differences of interpretation between Shi'ites and Sunnis on this. I'm certainly not competent to write such a note but having none may effectively leave a Shi'ite POV. What do you think? Dlyons493 Talk 00:37, 17 October 2005 (UTC)

Deletion debate on Gaytarded

I was the original nominator for the Gaytarded article on Votes for Deletion. I notice that you closed the debate today, after Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Gaytarded had been open for less that six hours. The normal policy on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion is to leave articles open for five days. I would feel more comfortable if the article were left open for somewhat longer. I understand that a consensus seems to have developed, but if you are going to close a deletion debate early, I think that you should explicitly state that in the debate results, and I really don't think that things should be cut shorter than one day. Actually, this is one of those rare times that I will actually disagree with your opinion. Allow me to explain...

• Personal attack on AFD page; "...Ben D. you brainless fuck wit, at least read the content which was formely posted..."
• Removes comments after being asked not to.
• Blanks user page of Ben D.; as you recall, he just called Ben D. a "brainless fuck wit".
• Vandalizes user page of Ben D. after I revert him.

Now, according to WP:BLOCK, I am allowed to block him. Quote: "Sysops may also block new user accounts that make lots of disruptive edits, for any length of time or permanently, at their discretion." Thanks for your offers, what I can give you is

• A list of IPs that were open proxies during the last scan
• Shell scripts that block a list of IPs
• Shell one-liners to extract a plain list of IP:port's from some of the more popular open proxy lists
• Scripts to check whether an open proxy can edit wikipedia
• A script to extract a list of tor proxies that can edit wikipedia from the node directory (this one isn't my work, it's a slight edit of someone else's script)
• glue scripts

What you'd need is

• An admin account on wikipedia
• An account on a unix machine with perl, zsh, lynx and all the usual niceties
• A reasonable familiarity with shell scripting and how open proxies work (perl might be useful too)
• The ability to write shell oneliners to scrape the list of to-be-tested addresses from online proxy lists (the current ones won't stay active or current forever)
• The willingness to dig through it all; it works well, but it's just a bunch of clumped together shellscripts. You need to work out what you want to do in what order
• The time to handle complaints about blocks

I cannot speak for the arbitrators. I assume that they will be reasonable, and will take note that the respondent has been properly notified on his talk page, and will decide whether to accept the case based on whether the facts as stated by the parties who have stated anything are a prima facie case.

A few years ago, my teenage daughter and I were being harassed by a mentally unbalanced young woman who claimed that my daughter was trying to steal her boyfriend. After considerable harassment, I filed a motion for a restraining order with the city superior court. The defendant was properly served by a process server. She never showed up in court for the hearing. The result was that the judge ruled based on the affidavit that I had filed.

At least one of the arbitrators is a lawyer and knows what the rules are when defendants in civil case fail to respond. I think that the arbitrators will follow a combination of law and common sense. Robert McClenon 18:58, 3 November 2005 (UTC)

Speedy keep

I must say the I disagree with your move to speedily keep Daniel Brandt. As far as I acn tell there were three calls (including one which say "possibly" and yourself) for speedy keep and two calls for not speedy keep (including myself). All of the keep votes that said nothing, in my mind, could be counted as normal keeps (i.e. not speedy). I understand that it is clear that the article would be kept, but I feel that ending it early makes it look like some sort of secret cabal is controlling the discussion (it costs us nothing to keep it open longer but Brandt could spin the early closure in some sort of anti-wikipedia propaganda).
