Tag a redirect to be made into a disambiguation page?

Hey @Leschnei, I noticed your work with disambiguation pages and I was wondering if you could help me out with something. Is there a category or a tag that can be added to a talk page of a redirect to indicate that a redirect should be turned into a disambiguation page? I'm doing some new page patrolling and came across University of Technology, which redirects to University of Technology Jaipur because of a page move. There's not currently any valid criteria for me to nominate it for deletion, but it absolutely does not belong as a redirect to one single page. I'd love if I could add pages to a category for users who work on the disambiguation project to expand into pages if one exists. Hey man im josh (talk) 13:42, 27 October 2022 (UTC)

@Hey man im josh: I'm afraid that I don't know of any tag for that, though I agree that it would be useful. I've redirected the page to Institute of technology. I'll probably change it to a disambiguation page later. Thanks for calling it to my attention. If you want to pursue the redirect tag, it's possible that someone at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Disambiguation could tell you if something exists or could be created. Disambiguation

Hi @Leschnei. You reverted my change to the disambiguation page for sybarite. I don't disagree with that, but would welcome your advice on what is the correct way to handle this? Currently, the disambiguation page has no mention of what is the most common use of this word (a person devoted to pleasure and luxury). There is no Wikipedia article on this use of the word (and it probably doesn't require a whole article), so I added it it using a link to Wiktionary. Should I link it to some other WP article such as hedonist, which is not quite the same? Thanks. Masato.harada (talk) 15:16, 4 November 2022 (UTC)

@Masato.harada: The thing about DAB pages is that they are not about the term being disambiguated (Sybarite in this case), but just a list of Wikipedia articles whose titles need to be distinguished from that term, so definitions are generally not needed. The standard practice is to add a {{wiktionary}} template at the top which puts a link to Wiktionary in the upper right corner (see MOS:WTLINK for more detail). Editors sometimes add a short definition if they think it will help. If you choose to do this, I would suggest leaving out the wikilinks since links to pleasure and luxury really don't help disambiguate titles containing 'Sybarite'. @AMCKen: I agree, there are many. There is a lot of confusion and disagreement about DAB pages, which is not surprising since their 'rules' differ from other pages. I try to follow the spirit of the law - make the page as simple and straightforward as possible to help the reader quickly find the article that they want. External links are usually garbage, and those that aren't belong in the article instead. When it seems reasonable, and I can confirm the source, I move them to the article. But there are many, many disambiguation pages, and relatively few editors who work on them. Leschnei (talk) 12:41, 16 November 2022 (UTC)

Dot and two dots

I noticed your edit at three dots. The problem is that dot (disambiguation) redirects to dot; the same arrangement applies to two dots, which explains why I wrote it as I did. Are the articles and their redirects the wrong way round? 𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 16:24, 15 November 2022 (UTC)

@John Maynard Friedman: the explanation is at WP:HOWTODAB and MOS:DABSEEALSO - basically all intentional links to disambiguation pages should go through a title that includes '(disambiguation)', whether that's the DAB page itself or a redirect to the DAB page. So Two dots (disambiguation) is correct. The problem with One dot is that (1) it doesn't end in '(disambiguation)' and (2) none of the entries at Dot are titled 'One dot' or '1 dot', so I simply changed it to Dot (disambiguation). Yes, I read HOWTODAB and more specifically WP:Article titles#Disambiguation, but they didn't answer (or at least I didn't find the answer to) the basic question: how should a dab article be named? To put it another way, let's say I need to create a new disambig article for a mythical but very ambiguous topic called !Ooh¡. Should I call it !Ooh¡ (disambiguation), list the many articles about !Ooh¡ in it, and redirect !Ooh¡ to it? Or alternatively do I call it !Ooh¡, list the articles in it, and redirect !Ooh¡ (disambiguation) to it? Or does it matter? --𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 19:42, 15 November 2022 (UTC)

If there is no obvious primary topic, it would probably be best to put the DAB page at !Oohi and create !Ooh¡ (disambiguation) to redirect to it. If someone disagrees, or a topic becomes primary, the DAB page can be moved to !Ooh¡ (disambiguation). !Ooh¡ should never redirect to !Ooh¡ (disambiguation) - that is considered WP:malplaced. Bluelink works

Thanks for addressing Wikipedia:WikiProject Bluelink patrol/Works‎, something I keep meaning to get around to but never find time for. Starting at the bottom gets the job done, but may suggest the least productive tasks to you first. If you mean starting at the bottom of the 0–9 section, I usually start at the top and work down, giving up at some point between 200 and 100 when I find I'm spending minutes for each productive but minor edit. (100 is a completely arbitrary cut-off.) I just realised you probably meant doing the last section first: if so, there's no such disadvantage so please ignore my misguided remark. Name lists

Just FYI an article like Marie Louise should not have been assessed as a disambiguation in the first place, those name "disambiguations" are always regarded as list articles and so should be assessed as such. That also means the NA importance should be removed, as it should never be applied to List articles. Except by WP Anthroponymy which is the "home" project for name articles and which is an exception to the rule... Cheers. FlagSteward (talk) 21:20, 13 January 2023 (UTC)

Hi Leschnei, thanks for your note. No, I'm not an admin so it's not something I can fix. What I have done is sorted out a large number of links that were coming into the dab page which needed redirecting to the various articles. Well, "thanks" so much for reverting / deleting / trashing my entries to the JTL (disambiguation) article:

@MFX: I have addressed each of your questions below:

1. WHY did you also revert / delete my additions to the already existing first list item, "jtL, a Korean boy band", detailing that it's "a South Korean boy band", which was absolutely correct?

You are right, I shouldn't have removed 'South'. I have returned it.

2. On the article's Talk page, I have explained in detail that I will soon create a coming new article about Jamii Telecommunication Limited, Kenya, which I wanted to link in the JTL (disambiguation) article beforehand. A link that you now deleted. Didn't you read that Talk page? Or is it a MUST that my Wikipedia article exists first before I write a disambiguation entry, a kind of "chicken or the egg" issue? EDIT: Too strange – there's no (more) article Talk page!, where has it gone?

Yes, since disambiguation pages help readers find existing articles (or information in other articles), the information should exist in an article before it is listed on a DAB page. I can't see that your discussion was ever added to Talk:JTL or Talk:JTL (disambiguation), and I don't see an edit to either of the talk pages among your contributions. Perhaps you accidentally closed the browser page without saving.

3. WHY do you discuss all this on MY Talk page and NOT on the article's Talk page where it belongs to?

MOS:DAB is very clear on external links and topics that aren't mentioned anywhere in Wikipedia. Therefore, it wasn't necessary to start a discussion on the article talk page. I mentioned it on your talk page as an invitation start this further discussion.

4. Following your guidelines mentioned in your contribution to my Talk page: WHY didn't you then also delete the last list entry: "JTL, a charity offering advanced apprenticeships in the building services sector" which isn't linked to Wikipedia at all?

I don't know why I missed this - it has been removed.

5. WHY do you revert / delete / trash a user's laborious contribution arbitrarily without first discussing it with him / her, although that is against Wikipedia principles?

The removal was not arbitrary - it was according to policy and consistent with other disambiguation pages. I tried to find some mention of Jamii Telecommunication Limited on the pages that you linked, or in any other article, but could not find any. The information that you added to JTL can be retrieved at any time from the history of the page and used in an article.

Hi, in what way is Bring Me Edelweiss any more (or less) unambiguous than Es war ein Edelweiss, for example?

Dugin is harldly used as a surname page

People who end up it on are usually looking for Aleksandr Dugin, but of course there are the other Dugins to what end I tried to make a disambiguation page for it, and I was told that because of the existing page on Dugin I could not do it, why do you disagree? @StrongALPHA: my edit was simply technical - and mostly described in Wikipedia:Name pages#Tagging and categorizing. If the page includes only people with the surname, it should be either be a DAB page labelled '{{disambiguation|surname}}', or it should be a surname page, labelled '{{surname}}' but not 'Category:Human name disambiguation pages' or any other disambiguation category. Also, it is typical for surname pages to include both information about the surname and a list of people. So people looking for another Dugin can use a surname page as readily as a disambiguation page.

There is a lot of overlap between these types of pages and a whole range of opinions about their different functions. For pages like Dugin, I mostly don't worry about whether it is a surname page or a DAB page, but just try to make it correct for the type of page that it is. You've removed my entry for XACT, why?

I'm into some audio conversion tools and seen somwhere mentioned xACT. I didn't know what is it and so first thing I've done was to type "wiki xACT" and have not found any information so I used google and found this: http://xact.scottcbrown.org ... I don't know how to add references to an article where there are not any (so I can't copy "syntax"). So before you revert anyone's work, look elsewhere. I mentioned this tool probably for the first time at wikipedia so it is not possible to have an already existing article. That also applies to the other meanings for XACT mentined in the wiki article, don't you think?
