Queen of Fiji
[edit]Hi there! I agree I probably went a bit too far with what I deleted. In no way did I question that the traditional power structure is intact in Fiji. I realize that - but I didn't think that was the point of the article. My problem with what you said about the Great Council of Chiefs is simply this: the House of Lords is a legislative body. The GCC, in theory, is not. On the other hand, the GCC wields a great deal of real power in Fiji, whereas the House of Lords has surrendered most of its powers. It now serves mainly as a talent-pool. So if anything, I think it does your chiefs a dis-service to compare their GCC with the House of Lords.
The other points need some minor rewording. I'm sorry I went too far and slashed too much out. Let's see what we can put back in, in a way that doesn't let the reader know where the author's sympathies lie (see WP:NPOV). BTW, welcome to Wikipedia! Far too few Fijians are contributing to the project, so I'm so glad to see you here. I hope you'll stay and contribute regularly to Fiji-related topics. David Cannon 10:30, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
Bula David, no worries but just wanted to clarify my points just in case you thought I was making stuff up, love the stuff youve put up on my country by the way, trying to confirm some stuff for your Ratu Mara section, noted you havent filled in some of the other childrens sections yet, so will add what I have and you can edit......cheers and have a great day
- Hi there! If you have time, I'd like you to have a look at Turaga na Rasau. I didn't write this article, someone else did; some parts need deleting, but I'm having trouble separating history from legend. Can you help? David Cannon 21:22, 14 November 2006 (UTC)
- Hi David, sorry just reading this now, been out of the capital for a few weeks working in the field. Sure thing will check new addtion and cross check next time Im in the archives. I notice someone has been adding stuff to the Lau section anonymously, some of it is actually oral history and bears merit, but as often with the case of oral histories, there are differing versions. But hey thanks for the great stuff youve put up, much appreciated. Im trying at the moment to piece together a decent article the other Tui Nayaus and the two early missionaries to Lakeba, works hectic so will try and finish when I go on leave...cheers mate
Fiji WikiProject
[edit]I have just become aware and interested in the islands of Fiji, and have created the WikiProject Fiji. I was recommended to ask you to join by David Cannon, and it would be great to have you on board as you have contributed and created so many of the articles about the country, and obviously know a lot about the area. Thanks UKWiki 18:18, 8 December 2006 (UTC)
- Bula UKWiki, sure dont mind being on board, usually sill up the pages when Im on leave or have free time, but sure will try and help out as best I can.......cheers

Tui Viti, Paramount Chief of Fiji, Queen of Fiji, etc.
[edit]Hi there! An anonymous user has proposed merging the Tui Viti, Paramount Chief of Fiji, and Queen of Fiji articles, or any combination thereof, claiming that they refer to identical positions. I've replied at Talk:Paramount Chief of Fiji that I think the roles are comparable, but the titles distinct. But I really don't know. Do you think they should be merged, or what? Thanks! (I'm asking the same question of User:Xorkl000). David Cannon 11:14, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
- Tricky question but the comment bears merit, as Paramount Chief of Fiji can literally be translated Tui Viti. I think you can merge and the jutification being the Queen was accorded the title Radini Viti kei Peritania in 1961. If she had been male, its very likely the title accorded would have been Tui Viti kei Peritania. So yes, I dont think that it would be a problem. Just for interest sake, Ratu Mara did try to convince the GCC to restore the Queen to the Head of the Country in the 1990's, I wouldnt be surprised if this idea crops again with the current situation in the country. Maybe just include a listing of those who have held claim to the title starting with Cakobau. I seriously doubt any chief in Fiji including the descendants of Cakobau would ever dare reclaim this title again. The rights to it was accorded to Victoria and her descendants and very unlikely any Fijian chief would contest this right or assume to have any right to it
- Thanks! I'll see what Xorkl000 says and then consider merging the articles:-) David Cannon 00:05, 16 December 2006 (UTC)
Image tagging for Image:Adi Elenoa Mara.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Adi Elenoa Mara.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the source and creator of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the source and creator of the image on the image's description page, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided source information for them as well.

- I see somebody has also tagged your image for Image:Adi Litia Dugdale.jpg. If you are the author of the image, you may grant permission to use the file under Wikipedia's image policy; otherwise, you may claim fair use. If you want any help with this, please let me know. David Cannon 00:40, 22 December 2006 (UTC)
- Hey David, yes could you please help with the images, not really sure how it works, but most of these pics are for public use. Would it better if I send you the pics via email and you upload them accordingly. Cheers
- You may most certainly e-mail them to me, but I will need to identify the source. There is an easier way: you may simply (a) identify yourself as the author/photographer of the images and (b) release them into the public domain, OR (a) identify a third person as the author/photographer, and state in good faith that you have the author's permission to release the pictures into the public domain. I'm happy to help you with this. You could let me know by e-mail (just see the E-MAIL THIS USER link at the side of the page) which images you are prepared to release for public use - or alternatively leave a note on my talk page. David Cannon 10:03, 22 December 2006 (UTC)
- Hi David, someone removed the adi litia dugdale article, is it possible to find out if this lost or deleted?. I got Adi Litia's pic off the site www.matavuvale.com, which is for public use. The rest are from the fiji governemnt site which is for public access and use.
- ok found out its been deleted by user Fang Aili, can you check his reason and see if its justified....
- According to policy, deletion is justified if the image is not appropriately tagged. You may re-upload the image (or I could do it for you - I saved a copy onto my hard disk - preferably with a different name to avoid arousing suspicions) and tag it appropriately. Thanks for identifying the source - I'll have a look and make sure it's okay to upload it. If so, I'll do it - and will let you know. Have a great day. David Cannon 02:28, 23 December 2006 (UTC)
- Um, by the way, could you send me the exact URL to find Adi Litia's picture on Matavuvale.com? I will need to specify its exact URL on its original page. Some of these bureaucratic rules are patently absurd, but that's the way things are :-( There are hundreds of pictures on Matavuvale.com, so if you could let me know exactly which one it is, that would be very helpful. Thanks! David Cannon 02:39, 23 December 2006 (UTC)
- Hi David, cant seem to relocate the pic of Adi Litia on Matvuvale, the albums are always changing- I still have the pic though, maybe might need to get permission from the site administrator- but Ive noticed the other pics I put up have been removed as well......this is the site where you can get them off- most have better pics of the Mara family- cant find a proper one for Ro Lala- probably take a pic of her portrait in the Ro Lala House Lobby if I cant do better...thanks.....http://www.fiji.gov.fj/gallery/view_album.php?set_albumName=Rewa4

Hi Laulad. I've tagged your recent image uploads with no source/no license tags. Could you tell me where you got these images? I know image policy is complicated, but if you could tell me where you got the images I can help you apply the right tags. Cheers, Fang Aili talk 17:01, 23 December 2006 (UTC)
- Hey Fang, sorry first time uploading pics, but I got the pic off this local governemnt public site- www.fiji.gov.fj/naitaba/Rewa4/rewa7.thumb.jpg. Hope this helps

query on Rokosau article
[edit]I left this on the duscussion page of the Rokosau article it was Just a query, are there two paramount titles?? Rokosau, Tui Lau or are they one in the same if so we should merge Tui Lau and Rokosau as to my knowledge no paramount cheiftan of Lau existed before the Tui Lau which was also of Tongan origin prior to that it was several Paramount Chieftans of areas which made up Lau, please advise? it might help to cite some published sources, I made the silly mistake of not doing so in one of my articles on the Turaga Na Rasau and it was AFDed until I produce my sources, anyway here to help, learn and contribute where I can.A fellow Lauan
- Hey MB, yes the two are distinctly separate titles, Roko Sau, orginates from Lakeba, thus the installation ceremony held in Tubou and Tui Nayau, from Nayau thus the installation on Nayau. Most people dont realise this but they are completely independent of each other, only coming into dual usage from Rasolo onwards. For example, Ratu Finau's father Tevita Uluikaleba II was installed Roko Sau, but died before being installed Tui Nayau, thus he is often referred to as Roko Sau but never Tui Nayau. Ratu Mara has the only distinction of being installed Tui Nayau first and Roko Sau second.
- The Tui Lau, is the third major title in Lau, which somehow has lost much of its function as of recent. But essentially the Tui Lau title was created specifically for Ma'afu and his sovereignty over the Northern Lau States (Vanua Balavu and dependencies- formerly part of Cakaudrove) and the Yasayasa Moala (Moala, Totoya, Matuku and dependencies- previously independent of Lakeba or Lau for that matter). Note the Tui Lau and Tui Nayau dominions are clearly different. With Ma'afu's passing by default his territtories came under the Tui Nayau, due to his close family ties with the Vuanirewa. The Tui Lau title fell from use until revived for Ratu Sukuna, futhermore the Tui Lau can be held independent of a living Tui Nayau eg Ratu Sukuna was Tui Lau at the same time Ratu Mara's grandfather held the Tui Nayau title. Again Ratu Mara set a precedent by being the first person in the history of Lau, to merge all three titles.
- It appears the Tui Lau title does not follow strict rules and can be awarded to persons of outstanding contributions to Lau and Fiji, such as Ratu Sukuna and Ratu Mara. When I mean rules, the Tui Lau title can be held by descendant in the female line of the Vuanirewa, eg Ratu Sukuna, Vasu to Lakeba via his mother Adi Maopam sister to Ratu Mara's grandfather. With Ratu Mara it is likely he recived the title Tui Lau aside from the fact of his political contributions to the country was also vasu to Lomaloma. This is not so with the Tui Nayau title which can only be inherited via direct male line. It will be interesting to see whether Ratu Finau Mara will also recieve all three titles as did his father, or they might again separate, the Tui Lau title going instead to another Vuanirewa member, but think the recommendation must first come from the elders in Sawana, to see who is worthy. I kindda think the Tui Lau title is the more democratic one, emphasis is not on birth right but more on the quality of the person reserved for people of quality to raise Lau and Fiji to even greater heights, hard shoes to fill considering the three previous holders.
- Hey wondered what happened to your articles, I liked them, couldnt really comment as like all Laun history much are oral anecdotes, sometimes hard to verify, Ive spent some hours in the archives cross checking stuff when I was on leave....anyways hope you get your additions back on, try and help if I can- will add references to Roko Sau as suggested......catch ya on the pages

Wikipedia Rotuman
[edit]Hi Laulad
I'm slowly assembling a Wikipedia to be in Rotuman and hereby invite you to vote for it's inclusion here. Please help me bring this dream for such an important resource into reality.
Thanks and Noa'ia! Mattbray 08:05, 9 April 2007 (UTC)
- Bula Laulad, and vinaka vaka levu for your vote of confidence for the Rotuman WP. This is yet another step closer to having this invaluable resource in Rotuman. By the way, a Maori user Kahuroa who does a great deal of work for Pacific and Polynesian topics, was wanting a lauan perspective on whether or not lau can be considered polynesian, or polynesian influenced. What do you think? --Mattbray 06:41, 22 April 2007 (UTC)
- I think in terms of ethnic classification Lauans are Melanesian, however, the Lauan culture has been heavily influenced by Polynesia eg dances such as the lakalaka are Tongan, but widely performed as Lauan, some vilages in Lau still retain the Tongan language eg Sawana in Vanua Balavu, and the Tui Nayau's traditional carpenters are descendants of Samoans from Manono, which has influenced Laun art and crafts. In general I guess Lauans like other areas in Fiji are really polynised melanesians. Hope this helps. Cheers
