Awarding Barnstar

The Barnstar of Good Humor
Aprils fools day was a blast. Loads of users lightened up to have good old fashion fun. I want to thank you for taking part in editing this page in particular and even though I may not know you, embrace the same talk pages, or even edit with you in the near future, I'd like to award you this Barnstar for making Wikipedia a fun environment in which to contribute. My RFA has closed

My RFA that you weighed in on earlier has closed as no consensus to promote, at a final tally of 120/47/13. I thank you for your feedback and comments there, and I'm going to be considering all the various advice and comments presented. I might end up at RFA again some day, or not. If you see me there again in the future, perhaps you might consider a Support !vote. If not, not, and no hard feelings. The pen is still mightier than the mop! See you around, and thanks again. Misread

At the five victorians delete - too much emphasis on oggle as a reference to notability is the scourge of afd debates - I was pointing out that they dont even hit the NLA new beta catalogue at all - that is a far more reliable location for whether anything was ever published (short of checking the vic state library catalogue) - hope that clarifies the point that i was making SatuSuro 04:37, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

I assume you're talking about Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/The Farmers' Five. I actually agree with you - I think that Google is certainly a valid tool for assessing the notability of some things (modern technology, bands, politicians, etc), but that 19th century settlers in Australia wasn't one of them. However, the lack of any other apparent sources on these individuals does not inspire confidence. I was able to find a mention of a George Brown who I think is the same person as one of the people in the story, but the mention is fleeting and doesn't refer to him as one of the "Farmer's Five" ([2], p50). As for the others, nothing. Lankiveil (speak to me) 10:32, 29 April 2008 (UTC).

Good work - well done - yeah I am very slowly trying to coax myself up to get an australian based afd rule that oggle is the last place one checks - and that NLA, and the appropriate state ref library catalogue is used - if the WA One (henrietta by nickname, bloody generous dame by fame) is anything to go by the catalogues have inserted so much extra info that at least 6 or so articles either edited by me or assisted - have utilised the catalogue info to very good effect of establishing sound info and notability - and in itself it is nothing short of brilliant - I am not so enthused by the tassie one though - havent thoroughly checked the other states so much but mitchell as a place has me almost as apoplectically enthusiastic as the combination of ANU and NLA (when I have been in Canberra as much as trying em on online) - I think they are never used enough in checking for info or issues of V and N within the australian project SatuSuro 10:40, 29 April 2008 (UTC) oops my coi/issue - I used to work at fisher (Usyd) and was paid to wander the stack - ahh the memory SatuSuro 10:41, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

Queensland locations

G'day Lankiveil - good to see a few new articles on places in Queensland...but can I ask one favour? If you make any more stubs for places like Bellmere, Queensland, could you add {{Queensland-geo-stub}} rather than just {{stub}}? It'll save a little sorting work further down the track. Cheers - and keep up the good work :) Grutness...wha? 23:44, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

My apologies, I'mnot that big an expert on stub-sorting. I'll be sure to use that stub type in the future. Or, alternatively, I could start the articles as fully featured B-Class articles from the get-go =). Lankiveil (speak to me) 11:56, 7 May 2008 (UTC).
No need to apologise, what you're doing is good - it's just that using the more precise stub is better. You're right, of course - B-class articles would be even better still (and why stop at B-class? Surprise us all with a new fully-fledged FA article ;) Grutness...wha? 00:52, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

By the way, Lanki, there's a present for you here: [3]. Sarah 11:12, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
hehe no worries. :) Just make sure (if you decide to use it) that you only use it for reverting vandalism. I'm sure you know that anyway but I'm s'posed to tell you so that if you use it to launch some massive edit war, you can't say that you didn't know! ;D Anyway, I've heard from that other guy. He has no non-free email address but has given me a phone number to call. I personally don't feel comfortable verifying people's identities like that because someone once registered User:Austin St. John and went around claiming to be the actor Austin St. John and so I blocked the account as an obvious impersonator but gave them the chance to email me to verify and they tried to but could offer nothing as proof but a yahoo account. Then not long after, someone did the same thing with the Australian actor Jason Smith (actor) and registered User:Jason Smith and went about claiming they were the actor. When I username blocked Jason Smith and gave them the same opportunity to confirm their identity, they replied from a yahoo address that followed the same format as the Austin St. John one - as in name followed by three numbers @ yahoo. Just ridiculous and obviously bad impersonations and I found out later it was a guy who was banned a couple of years ago. But anyway, he gave me a phone number when he emailed me at OTRS to "confirm his identity" and invited me to phone him to chat with him so he could prove his identity (kind of funny really as the guy behind this knows that I'm Australian and he is a New Yorker and I kind of think I might be able to pick a guy with an Australian accent from a New Yorker with no local knowledge and an accent that's definitely not Australian. lol). So I feel really reluctant to accept phone identification but in this case he seems to be in the phonebook and so I think it's likely it is him but I'm going to ask Andrew to consider calling as I think he has the political knowledge to fish out a scam and he would probably tolerate the political rhetoric being thrown around better than me. :) Anyway, apologies for the long rant but just wanted to update you. Cheers, Sarah 04:08, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
G'day. I'm sorry I didn't get back here yesterday but I was only online for a short time. As you've noticed, Peter has been unblocked. He sent me a photo of himself holding his drivers license so I unblocked him but he has promised to behave himself and to stop POV pushing, he also apologised to me privately for being snarky (he used another word but I won't post that here:)) so we'll just have to see how things go now. I think he has the potential to be a very effective editor if he chooses to do so as he is obviously intelligent and very knowledgeable but the POV issues, COI and civility are a concern. Sorry for not letting you know yesterday, Lanki. Sarah 04:57, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

Sorry about that! It seems that I warned the wrong user (in fact, I think you may have been the one reverted vandalism to that page!). Thank You

Thank you for your comment at my RFA. Even though I withdrew, it still means a lot to me. Once again thanks, have a good day. :) <3 Tinkleheimer TALK!! 18:48, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

Please remember that rollback should only be used to revert edits that are 'blatantly nonproductive, such as vandalism and nonsense.' For undoing edits that violate simple WP:NPOV like this, undo should be used instead so an edit summary can be left issuing the user at fault with a reason as to why their edit was reverted. The warnings you left on the users' talk page are completely unjust. Regards, ——Ryan | tc 12:12, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

I do not see what was so controversial about my reverts. I was not using the "rollback" function at all, the IP editor in question had not made any recent constructive edits, but only made edits complaining about the administration of the school, the edits were blatantly NPOV, and I left a message on the IP talk page stating that the edit had been reverted due to POV concerns. I respect your opinion that they were "unjust", but I actually think that a couple of "Information" messages were on the pretty mild end of the scale. I'll take your comments under advisement in good faith, and if there's anything else you think I should have done I'll be happy to consider it for the future.
You were using Huggle which uses the Rollback feature to revert edits. You do not use rollback to revert NPOV violations. Secondly, the first warning you left on the users' talk page didn't mention anything to do with the NPOV policy. You left them a standard vandalism template (using Huggle). Unless Wikipedia polices have taken a completely radical re-write recently, I don't recall NPOV being classed as vandalism ——Ryan | tc 12:36, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
WP:ROLLBACK itself states that "Rollback must only be used to undo edits that are blatantly nonproductive". I concede that on reflection the edits in question appear to be borderline, but given the edits in question, I still think it was justifiable. There was no content that could reasonably be salvaged from the fragment, and it was an unsourced and essentially anonymous criticism of a real-world entity that could conceivably have had their reputation damaged by the edit. Hence, I was of the opinion that the edit was "blatantly nonproductive", especially considering it was re-done after being reverted. I will also concede that I should have used the "NPOV" message first time around, and I will endeavour to be more careful on this point in the future. However, I still think that characterising it was "unjust" is a bit unnecessarily emotive - "unjust" would have been slapping a final warning template or reporting them straight to AIV. I like to think I'm not that heavy handed =) Lankiveil (speak to me) 12:48, 10 June 2008 (UTC).
I apologise for branding your actions as 'unjust.' That was harsh. Happy editing and well done on the RC patrol today, beat me many times to vandalism :P ——Ryan | tc 13:06, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

Thanks to everyone who participated in my RfA, regardless of their !vote. I have withdrawn the nomination as a failure at 19 supports, 45 opposes, and 9 neutral statements.

As has been written and sung, you can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you get what you need — and what I need is to go back to working on our shared project. Not everyone has to be an admin; there is a role for each of us. After reflection, I feel I don't have the temperament to secure community consensus as an admin at any point, and I will not be applying again in the future — and hey, that's all right, 'cause I stay true to the philosophy that adminship is no big deal: I tried, I failed, and now I'll return to doing what I've always done. I have an extremely strong belief in the consensus process, and the consensus was clear. I will be devoting my energies to volunteering at MedCab and working up a complete series of articles on the short stories of Ernest Hemingway, among lord knows what else. Thanks again to everyone who spared the time to weigh in on this one. It was made in better faith than it probably seemed.

Just a little note to say thankyou for participating in my successful RFA candidacy, which passed with 96 supports, 0 opposes, and 1 neutral. I am pleasantly taken aback by the amount of support for me to contribute in an administrative role and look forward to demonstrating that such faith is well placed. I'll be creating then. The candidate does the actual transclusion, so you can do it whenever you feel like it. As for your editor review, you had an excellent review by delldot, which is more than enough to set you straight. Not that you were doing anything wrong in the first place anyway. I've been meaning to do this for a while, really, but I decided to wait and see what you were up to. bibliomaniac15 19:39, 17 August 2008 (UTC) PS: Drop the titles next time, Mr. Lankiveil.

Fight club (the movie)

What are our chances of getting the mega society deleted? I mean afterall, the only people who care about it are those in mega scoiety which only accepts 1 per million people. Let them have a $35/year godaddy website, can't we overpower them here since 99% of us have no securing interest in their "exclusive club".?

I think that if it has gotten deleted 2 outta 3 times, then we stand a 2/3 shot. What is the tag to nominate deletion? I have a friend with about 30 edits, who I can email to get his opinion, that will make 3 of us. I'm not saying lets collude to get it deleted, all I'm saying is that lets just collude to put the tag on the article. Hopefully, enough admins have the same common sense as us. Lankiveil, I am very proud of you. In a time of turmoil and drama, your conduct has been found to be impeccable and the amount of trust the community has put in you is enormous. You've managed to distinguish yourself as an editor of reliability. Never forget this. I know that you will serve us well as an administrator. Use the tools wisely, and I hope that you will act as a mentor and as a role model for users now and for users to come. Cheers, bibliomaniac15 05:28, 31 August 2008 (UTC)

I had an edit conflict last night while trying to add my support for your RfA. The conflict was with the closing admin, so...I didn't get to add it. Congrats anyway, and here's your t-shirt!  Frank  |  talk  11:08, 31 August 2008 (UTC)

Thankyou all, you don't know how much I appreciate the confidence that you've all shown in me, and how humbling it truly is to see people who I respect but have never actually interacted directly with come into my RfA and say how valuable a contributor I am. I'll do my best to use the tools wisely and prove that your trust in me was justified. Lankiveil (speak to me) 11:54, 31 August 2008 (UTC).

Re:deletion request

Hi. I may have used the wrong db template on Talk:April Showers (weather phenomenon) earlier, but one thing I've noticed is that redirected talk pages have a habit of being deleted. I've made the deletion request again. Can you advise me if I am using the wrong template? Thanks TheRetroGuy (talk) 23:25, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for getting back to me. Glad everything is sorted out. Cheers TheRetroGuy (talk) 17:30, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

Chris Hornbrook

the speedy was declined because he was/is a member of a notable band; WP:MUSIC doesn't accept this as a showing of notability, and instead requires that the musician (if you're using this point to assert notability) be a member of notable work outside his primary ensemble. While Hornbrook was a member of a band before this one, the band in question was non-notable. Ironholds 13:54, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

Ahh ok, thanks for explaining that :). I'll leave it where it is for now; I didn't know about the modern drummer thing, which helps a lot with notability. As soon as i've finished with my current project (i've got about 20 long bio's to write) i'll insert the info into the article. Thanks again for your help. Ironholds 14:10, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

Nonsense

Hi, I'v normaly been adding nonsense down for the two things there, although somtimes I have been a little slack on the: "Content that, while apparently meaningful after a fashion, is so completely and irredeemably confused that no reasonable person can be expected to make any sense of it whatsoever.", I shall now make a collection of templates, and start to use them correctly, thankyou for the heads up Theterribletwins1111 (talk) 12:23, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

No worries, many of the articles you've tagged have been quite poor and deletable under another criterion, and you've also identified a lot of articles that have severe problems, which are now tagged and will be dealt with, so good work there! You may wish to consider installing Twinkle, as it has a pretty nifty function which gives you a button that tags articles with the speedy templates automatically, without you having to go in and manually add them. It's also got some other neat features - I use it myself and it really helps on new page patrol! Lankiveil (speak to me) 12:26, 4 September 2008 (UTC).
thanks I'll definitely consider that, cheers Theterribletwins1111 (talk) 12:36, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

Hi, I notice you CSD G4-ed WorkSessions, but there is no indication of where the duplicated content was from, and the delete log for that particular page is empty. As such, I have declined speedy deletion, but if you can point me to where it originally was (or if I'm missing something really obvious), I'll be happy to reverse myself. Also, the notability of the company is pretty shaky anyway, I'm pretty sure that there would be a delete consensus if it were to go to AfD. Lankiveil (speak to me) 01:44, 6 September 2008 (UTC).

Good day Lankiveil.
Sorry, my mistake... I tagged it {{db-g4}} where it should obviously have been {{db-inc}}!!!
The background info on this young (2008) and relatively un-notable (3 employees) company can be found here and here, which makes it a pretty easy case... --ŦħęGɛя㎥ 14:42, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

Mathmo AfD

Hi there. I'm a bit intrigued as to why you would make the decision in favour of closing the discussion. I'm just trying to understand the process, but as far as I can see it, all the people voting 'Delete' are pointing to it being a dictionary definition, while none of the people voting 'Keep' actually give a solid reason or any evidence that it's anything other than a DictDef. If they're correct, and it's not a dictionary definition, then presumably the article should be re-written to better reflect that, and the trouble is that within Cambridge, Oxford etc, it's just a slang term for Mathematician! Mrh30 (talk) 11:52, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

I think I understand where you're coming from, but I thought when an Admin reviews an AfD page, they're supposed to weigh the evidence that has been presented. It's pretty hard to accept that the decision has been made correctly when none of the evidence for 'Keep' seems to actually provide any evidence that it's anything other than what the article says - a slang term! Mrh30 (talk) 12:07, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

Hi, Lankiveil. Regarding your offer to move the article to my userspace, that would be good. Third party sources for the article are here and here.

Regarding the fact that she only came third, this is true (for the moment, although the count isn't finished yet). However, if she had overtaken the Liberal candidate, it was argued by Antony Green that she would have easily won the seat on Liberal preferences. Sumthingweird (talk) 15:08, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

Augies

Heya Mr. Lankiveil ;-)

re. this. You might have noticed my lack of URL use for many refs in this article, but that the URLs are <!-- hidden -->. This basically goes back to Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Powderfinger - do a Ctrl+F for the 07:53, 23 November 2007 (UTC) comment. So in this case, I removed the one you had added in, as there was no other information on the page linked about where it came from... using content from that site, I've just had to guess the mag its from based on clues in the text, at times. This one had no such clues. :-(

So yeah, just a heads up as to the copyright status of the stuff we're using to cite. Basically, if you couldn't cite it as if you had the thing in front of you because there isn't enough info to cite, then we can't really use it.

Giggy (talk) 11:02, 7 September 2008 (UTC)

History feels like it's pretty well done, I think. A few snippets can still be thrown in but the meat is there. Now to find musical style stuff. There's really so much out there, it's just a matter of reading lots and throwing lots in (and somehow, I find I'm not to great at that :S). Giggy (talk) 00:29, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
Any ideas for what to use for other music samples? I'm thinking "Asleep in Perfection" and something from Strange Bird; probably "The Vineyard" or "This Train Will Be Taking No Passengers". Any thoughts? Other then that I think it's looking pretty good and now needs some touching up/copyediting, but isn't far off PR/FAC. Giggy (talk) 09:21, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

  • C = Option C, the winner of the initial poll and run-off. (US articles have US format dates, international format otherwise)
  • R = Retain existing wording. (National format for English-speaking countries, no guidance otherwise).

David Bahar

Hi i thank you for making it simple to reply with the link talk to me,i do feel this artist did contribute to UK dance music, i remeber been in the clubs that played The Theme, back in the 80s please follow the link(The Theme) on the David Bahar page and see some of the comments made regarding the track, i can not find much more also, but thats why i put the info here of what i could find, i feel it gives all the more interest, this page is not going to get 100000000000 hits however i do feel may pages here will not also. please read below some of the quotes, i did not include them on the david bahar page as i could only find them on the unique 3 site and not on other sites. if all the info was as easy as Google search, it would be great however i think that would take somthing away from Wikipedia, its one of the things that makes it worth doing a search, ( its great when i cant find somthing on google but i find it here) thats what keeps me coming back and i am sure many others, i do feel i have been fair in my editing, and thats all i can realy do. Hope this may make you reconsider the deletion.

here are some coments i could find from the unique 3 page and i am sure if they where untrue the people and companies below would have them taken off.

"The Theme’ gave bass tones a whole new meaning" [Music Mag]

"Commitment to the underground" [Record Mirror]

"This isn’t music, this is a physical force" [Mixmag]

Unique 3 "The first & hardest on the UK House scene" [Pete Tong - Radio 1]

"The new age, [Unique 3] stand as a testament to the new spirit of risk and adventure" [Paulo Hewitt NME]

David Bahar

Hello i pasted this form the criteria page for inclusion Is cited in reliable sources as being influential in style, technique, repertory or teaching in a particular music genre.

i feel this artist falls under influential in style i do feel the publications and people such a Pete Tong would have this removed from the the unique myspace site i also just found this below

The inclusion of Unique 3’s - ’The Theme’ on both The Chemical Brothers album of tracks that inspired them to make music: ’Brothers Gonna Work It Out’ & on Warp Records collection of early House tracks that inspired them to set up their world famous label, an album aptly titled:’Inspirations’, stands testament to this. - Virgin/10 Records Press Department. all this information i have found on the unique 3 site it is however a myspace, so i am not sure how you will stand on this, as stated befor i do feel if anything was out of line here, it would have been removed by companies or artist like Pete Tong

I have an admin question

Is there some abbreviation of a policy which grants non-admins like one or two more of the toolbox tools? I have no interest in power, nor am I willing to learn parts of wikipedia which I'm not enthused just to survive an RFA, so I am curious if its common to grant users a subset of the admin tools? It seems like a natural segue from WP:AGF. Thanks, and I'll check back here for the answer. Sentriclecub (talk) 21:57, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

As far as I know, the only two tools that fall into this category are account creation and rollback. The bulk of admin tools, such as delete, restore, and block user, are otherwise packaged together.  Frank  |  talk  22:09, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

New Link David Bahar Link please take a look at 1 go down to Disc 2 you will find The Theme Chill Mix. this is the Chill Records mix, that was taken over by 10 records, on the credits for the chill records release is David Bahar. all the quotes that can be found on Unique 3 relate to The Theme, this artist was part of unique 3 at the time of releasing the theme, the title of the warp records album was ’Inspirations’warp is one of the best known indie labels in the UK i know you know your stuff, but im just making the point, they chose The Theme, Chill Mix on the album, this information was not put up by me, it is on the Warp Records Page and so is (independent). On the david bahar page if you follow the link CHill Records you will find cat number and artist listing I understand and respect what you are doing here and this Artist David Bahar, was unknown to you me and many others, i found him on myspace when i read the info regarding the theme that a bit of a shock to me as The Theme was a big tune in my life in its day, i wanted to make sure he was not making it up as i thought Unique 3 where just unique 3 and not the mad musician also, thats when i looked around found what i could and then put up the info here as i feel its a good place for true history to be noted,if you wish to disregard this piece of music history, i can only wonder why a piece of British dance music history that has been missed by Google to name but one, should be missed here just because of that, i will not include this artical in any other page, to make sure nothing could be said or implied that may not be the case, looking at the warp records Inspirations album i think it fair to give Unique 3 and the mad musician some credit here, what we need to understand here is that Unique 3s members changed a lot not sure if you know but Kevin Harper(Boy Wonder) the guy that worked with nightmares on Wax and was on Warp, Was one of the Unique 3 also befor the mad musician, When Bahar joined the team he kept on his name as the mad musician, but on the chill records label you will only find 3 names d bahar i park and p cargill, but it was unique 3 and the mad musician i will be more than happy to include, a link for Unique 3, i did put in a link for unique 3 but it was taken off,if you can find anything on unique i would hope you would leave this up and include the information on Unique 3. --Radicalthinker (talk) 23:24, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

Could you do a toolbox favor?

I am not sure, but are you able to revert to this version? I would like to know if you can revert to the version as of Revision as of 09:45, 2 October 2008. I have already archived the current version, so I can 1-click restore it to the current version, but I'm curious as to how to revert to the 2 Oct 09:45 version? Could you do that for me? I've been the only editor on the page, since Oct 2, and I want to show a fellow editor, with a super low edit count, that I'm willing to start over and work with him to make the necessary changes together. I did too much on my own, and didn't know that anyone watched the page, so what I want to do is make this temporary correction immediately, before he fails to see my willingness to collaborate. Thanks. I tried this myself, but I get the error about conflicting intermediate edits, so since they are all mine, and I have archived the current version, it should be no problem I hope.
