Nuci's Space

[edit]
Thank you for contributing to Wikipedia! You recently added an external link to MySpace in an article. It has been removed because the link pointed to a non-encyclopedic source. Please refer to Wikipedia's policy on external links for more information.

While it's approaching patent nonsense in presentation this does sadly document a current event. I'll see what I can do about Wikifying it, although really it belongs on Wikinews... Hmmm. I wonder if there's a {{Transfer to Wikinews}} template? No. Pah!. Maybe a {{prod}} as a neologism? It's not a term I've heard over here in the UK yet. Tonywalton  | Talk 19:53, 11 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've prodded it as a neologism. The term is being used by exactly one newspaper over here (so far). If it catches on I'll de-prod it and try to make an article out of it. Tonywalton  | Talk 20:07, 11 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The author has de-prodded it. I'm taking it to AfD now (again, as a neologism). Note that none of the extra sources added by the author use this term. "Ripper", yes, "East Anglia Ripper", yes (which is more cognate with Yorkshire Ripper, as you'd expect from The Times) but no "Ipswich Ripper". I'll happily withdraw my AfD nomination if it does gain wide acceptance within the 5 days. Tonywalton  | Talk 20:19, 11 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The AfD discussion lives here. No need to contribute if you don't want, but it might be instructive to keeo an eye on it to see what happens on AfD! Cheers, Tonywalton  | Talk 20:43, 11 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Aha! I see you did. Nothing wrong with that, but technically that goes as an opinion to Keep and rename. Which when I think about it is probably a better idea than deletion. See WP:AFD for all the procedural stuff. No rush, an AfD discusion can last up to five days. Tonywalton  | Talk 20:46, 11 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for pointing that out. I have closed the AfD. Tizio 15:54, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Award

The Minor Barnstar
I, Raystorm, award you The Minor Barnstar in appreciation of all those many minor (but important) edits of the utmost quality you have made throughout Wikipedia (including wikifying and assorted practical tasks), and hope you will keep up your tireless efforts to improve our community!
Thanks, Raystorm, for this award! I appreciate it! :) Aleta 03:19, 3 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Not at all Aleta, you deserve it. :) Cheers Raystorm 21:08, 7 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, LadyofShalott, welcome to WikiProject LGBT Studies!

We are a growing community of Wikipedia editors dedicated to identifying, categorizing, and improving articles regarding lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) and intersex people. LGBT Studies covers people, culture, history, and related subjects concerning sexual identity and gender identity - this covers a lot of ground and your help is appreciated! Some points that may be helpful:

  • Our main aim is to help improve articles, so if someone seeks help, please try to assist if you are able. Likewise feel free to ask for help, advice or clarification.
  • Many important discussions take place on the project's main discussion page; it is highly recommended that you watchlist it.
  • If you have another language besides English, please consider adding yourself to our translation section, to help us improve our foreign LGBT topics.
  • The project has several ongoing and developing activities, such as article quality assessment, peer review and a project-wide article collaboration, all of which you are welcome to take part in. We also have a unique program to improve our lower quality articles, Jumpaclass, so please consider signing up there.
  • If you're going to stay awhile, please create a square in our project quilt! You can put anything you want in it.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask on the talk page, and we will be happy to help you.

And once again - Welcome!

Hi Aleta. Just wanted to say that the word in the homosexual women section of the article is meant to be 'allusions' and not 'illusions'. An allusion is a reference to something, or an indication that x is the case. Hope that helps. WJBscribe (WJB talk) 03:52, 4 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I apologise if I came across as patronising. On reflection I don't think either word really means what is trying to be said. I've changed the sentence to avoid using them. Do you think its now OK? WJBscribe (WJB talk) 04:06, 4 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for joining the project!

[edit]

Thank you for having joined the WikiProject Religion! It is basically only a recently reformed group, and, as you probably saw from the project page, there is still a lot that needs to be done. Any help you might be able to give in any area of the project would be more than welcome. I noticed in particular that you expressed interest in the Unitarian Universalist faith. That makes you the second member of the project to specifically do so. This is good, because our aims are to improve and maintain the articles relating to religion which do not fall within the scope of any of the other projects, as well as to potentially create new task forces or other projects to deal specifically with those other faiths. Generally, the WikiProject Council guidelines call for at least five members to create a new differentiated project, but those numbers can drop considerably if the proposed project is more a task force or work group of another project. With any luck, we may have enough interested parties soon to create a special group to deal with the Unitarian Universalists. Also, I have just now begun to catalogue all the relevant articles, and am finding that there is a huge number of articles which deal with religion subjects in general, without any particular focus on any specific religions. Any contributions you might be able to make on these articles, or any other articles that might interest you, would be more than welcome. If you should ever have any questions, or wish any sort of assistance, please do not hesitate to let me or the other members of the project know. Happy editing, and thanks again for joining the project! Badbilltucker 14:29, 4 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Kelley Armstrong

[edit]

Hi, Thanks for the note about the wikify tag I applied to Kelley Armstrong. I apologize for not having left a note on the discussion page, but was in a bit of a rush and had placed the tag, in a way, to remind myself to look at the entry today. I have three concerns:

1) The entry contains an unreferenced quote.

2) The biographical section contains contradictory information as to the number of children Armstrong has (see the first and final sentences).

3) Despite your improvements, I find much of the tone and content of the biographical section unencyclopedic and... well, chatty.

Hope this helps. Thanks for your good work. Victoriagirl 16:46, 4 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Aleta, You are, of course, correct, the wikify tag is not quite correct. I suppose clean-up would have been better. Thanks for pointing that out. Victoriagirl 22:29, 4 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Kim Harrison & Offical MySpace pages

[edit]

I just read back over WP:EL, and I think this is ambiguous. It does, of course, say you can link to official websites, but to avoid MySpace sites. Which rule trumps the other when they are in apparent opposition? I'm not sure, but I won't fight you on this one anymore, particularly as I agree links to official MySpace pages can be useful. Aleta 06:55, 6 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's not ambiguous. Right before listing "restricted pages," the page specifically states "In addition to the restrictions on linking, and except for a link to a page that is the subject of the article or is an official page of the subject of the article, one should avoid." Break it out literally. "Except for a link to a page that... is an official page of the subject of the article... one should avoid links to... MySpace." Since it's her official MySpace it's explicitly allowed by the guideline. - Debuskjt 06:48, 7 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for alerting me about this user's continuing vandalism, I've blocked him indefinately as a vandalism-only account. If you come across anything like this in the future, feel free to report it to Administrator Intervention against Vandalism, as you'll most likely get a faster response than individually reporting it to adminstrators. If you have any other questions about Wikipedia, or need help with anything in the future, feel free to ask me. Cheers. Canadian-Bacon 23:55, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Since you're interested in the history of geology, you might want to take a look at the new article on it. (It wasn't in the nav bar because until recently, there was no article!) It's a decent start, but it could use plenty of work.--ragesoss 20:25, 21 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

User warning templates

[edit]

Hey there, take a quick look at WP:UTM. They're faster than typing your own warning messages and they're standardized so that there's no worry about wording. :) --Brad Beattie (talk) 00:24, 23 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In cases like User talk:24.98.224.185, it's probably best just to start with {{uw-vandalism3}}. If the user's been gone for a couple of weeks, the whole "last warning" thing doesn't really apply any more, especially with IPs. --Brad Beattie (talk) 00:31, 23 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Biblio this - biblio that

[edit]

There's a huge literature on the various afflictions on bibliomanias and things - I simply havent got around to ever coming back and putting a non-psych angle on these - sop I do hope you dont misinterpret my message there - It is not meant to be any personal attack - just frustration with having too many thread (on my part) to handle - any good article on this issue can easily draw in a whole range of issues that do not necessarily belong to a certifiable american culturally oriented label - there is the material out there - I have dwelt in other more time consuming areas - I do hope you understand....SatuSuro 04:46, 27 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have a copy of Holbrook Jackson - and my late father was an obsessive book collector - he left behind five rooms full of books and a large cellar full of ephemera - and he had copies of bios of Phillips and so on - so when I start uncovering the material I hope to add - its taking a long long time (i was vcxlor previously - the comment at the top...) to uncover the things... sigh...SatuSuro 04:52, 27 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
As for ego - I have had a lame edit war just recently over an incorrect isbn numbers on 50 or so stubs I had created - heheh - I couldnt give a dam what happened to any of the thousands of articles that I have worked on - but I did have a sense of mission to improve the biblio articles last year - and have been since distracted by very time consuming projects and threads -...SatuSuro 04:55, 27 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the compliment - I appreciate that. I have a copy of commonist but my children are on world of warcraft all waking hours until next week when they go back to school here in west oz (bit like west texas or southern california to some) so I cannot upload the large number of shots from west coast tas, or other placees until I have a spare day with no teenagers complaining about the game slowing down...:( SatuSuro 05:04, 27 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You found what I was apologising for - the actual article talk page - there was an aggressive editor doing things about a year ago to all the biblio things - and I think from memory I pulled back because of that - I certainly dont want to go down the same line - I do hope that somehow we might with others re-populate the series of articles with a fine plethora of cites/refs/ even images to give the articles what they deserve! SatuSuro 05:48, 27 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Aleta! Thanks for tagging articles as you come across them - every little bit helps! Would you do me a favor and go ahead and rate the articles with a rough estimate? That keeps them out of the "unassessed" category, which I check every once and a while and empty out. Thanks mucho! -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 06:08, 27 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, SatyTN, ok, I've been doing that some when it's obviously a stub, but I'll be more diligent about estimating on all of them.  :) Aleta 06:12, 27 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I guess I should have thought about the fact that I'm only seeing the ones you didn't classify... Sorry about that :) And don't worry too much about putting it in the right class - I just estimate based on length, number of sections, and (sometimes) the talk page. And it's silly of me to want an empty "unassessed" category, but there you go :) Thanks again! -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 06:26, 27 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The LGBT studies WikiProject Newsletter!
Issue III - February 1, 2007

Announcement: If someone requests help or feedback on an article, please try your hardest to help them out if you are able. Thank you.

Project News
  • The LGBT Portal has once again been revamped and a work rota started. Efforts towards Featured Portal status are slowly coming together.
  • The assessment system has been a great success, we have tagged over 4000 articles! Please tag any LGBT related articles you come across by adding {{LGBTProject | class=}} to the talkpage. Please see the Assessment Department for how to assess an article according to the grading system.
  • The Translation department has changed its focus, to LGBT articles about non-English topics and people on which there may be more information on the relevant foreign Wikipedia. Please add your name if you are fluent in any language other than English.
  • Jumpaclass is picking up slowly, with nine people having entered. With over 2000 stubs we need to improve our article quality. Please sign up and get it going! Challenge another user to see how far you can jump a stub!
  • There is an ongoing discussion about the current LGBT categorisation system here, here, and a little bit here. A special page has now been set up here to deal with this.
  • A Watchlist has been set up to monitor controversial and/or highly vandalised articles. It can also be used for article disputes, just add a note explaining the nature of the dispute.
  • With the influx of so many active members, there is now enough support for a LGBT studies peer review, which may be found here. It's in the beta phase at the moment, so bear with us if we make any mistakes. Feel free to peer review any articles you have been working on.
  • It was agreed this month to start reducing the uses of the Notice board, as many members felt that it was not effective. An open tasks template has been created, bringing together important announcements, FAC/FARs, Peer reviews, XfDs, the COTM, and requested articles. You may desire to watchlist it. A Deletion sorting subpage is also now working to bring together XfDs - this should be bot-driven, but we have not currently tagged enough articles to make this fully automated, so please update the list with any LGBT-related XfDs you come across.

Helping out with the Unassessed Wikipedia Biographies

[edit]

Seeing that you are an active member of the WikiBiography Project, I was wondering if you would help lend a hand in helping us clear out the amount of unassessed articles tagged with {{WPBiography}}. Many of them are of stub and start class, but a few are of B or A caliber. Getting a simple assessment rating can help us start moving many of these biographies to a higher quality article. Thank you! --Ozgod 20:07, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Support

[edit]

Hi, I received your support on the reggaetón page to include the diacritic on the first word of the article and to state that both spellings appear in the English language. User Sfacets has however begun an edit war and removed the diacritic, and latter on added the sentence that the diacritic is used less often. I’d like your support in defending the accent and removing the redundant information about frequency seeing as how it has already been established that both spellings are widely used in English. The frequency fact is also unnecessary because that’s apparent since the anglicised version dominates the page except for two occasions. Thank you. Link to reggaeton discussion --Noé Æ 06:15, 2 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The vetting of the barnstars that could be listed on the WP:BS page initially developed because of the chaos that was being created. Over time, the awards pages have grown to four classes of awards. Anyone can create any award (as can any wikiproject), but to get listed on the page they had to first be vetted. There are now fifteen pages of archived ideas, most of which haven't made it to the page. The flip side of the vetting was the relative freedom of listing something on the WP:PUA page - anyone can post almost anything there.

Initially, the WP:BS pages were a wikiproject, but that was deleted after the idea was moved to the Wikipedia pages. After some conflicts last year about 'process' Wikipedia:WikiProject Awards ws recreated. In any case, if you have any other questions or comments, let me know. --evrik (talk) 04:12, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

KhoiKhoi Vandalism

[edit]

Hey Aleta, check my talk page, I actually didn't revert you, it was KhoiKhoi. Even though the consensus on the talk page is to keep the first word of the article consistent with the title, he changes the page without explaining why. I keep telling him to look at the talk page, but he refuses to do so, he changes it because he personally believes the word requires an accent. I went ahead and reported him to the other administrators, he's going to see that and immediately block my account (kind of feel like I'm in a third world country reporting a corrupt policeman). But you, myself, Sfacest, Gtbacchus are all in agreement, the first word should reflect the title. KhoiKhoi apparently doesn't want to follow the consensus and is editing based on what he thinks the page should say. I may request a full block on edits of the page if he continues. 68.155.70.91 02:33, 4 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject updates

[edit]
  • I have done some updating to the WP:SCN, added some new articles, added a "to do" list to the top of the project, and fixed up some categories and assessment stuff. I suggest we should all pick one article at a time, or at most two, to work on bringing up to Featured Article status. You could give input on the project's talk page...

Hello; I was glad to see you'd contributed to the discussion on Talk:Wink (game) about whether it should be merged with Ratchet Screwdriver. Would it be possible for you to say why you support the merger, or comment briefly about it? It is general guideline on Wikipedia that it's always useful to discuss rather than vote. Removing a reference from an article and then requesting citations for facts that were supported by that reference constitutes vandalism. And why do you persist in adding the line "Considered to be a daringly groundbreaking work in American theater" and then requesting a citation for it? If you can't provide the citation, please don't add the line. Thank you. SFTVLGUY2 13:09, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I suggest you look at your edit of March 26 and compare it to mine immediately preceding it. You removed the reference I had added and reverted the opening line of the second paragraph that previously had been removed. Clearly you cut and pasted an old edit without giving any thought to the consequences. Before getting so defensive, take a careful look at your own handiwork. Whether or not you intended to vandalize the article, the bottom line is the edits you made did. Thank you. SFTVLGUY2 12:52, 28 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
