New Page Review - newsletter No.2
- A HUGE backlog
We now have 805 New Page Reviewers!
Most of us requested the user right at PERM, expressing a wish to be able to do something about the huge backlog, but the chart on the right does not demonstrate any changes to the pre-user-right levels of October.
The backlog is still steadily growing at a rate of 150 a day or 4,650 a month. Only 20 reviews a day by each reviewer over the next few days would bring the backlog down to a managable level and the daily input can then be processed by each reviewer doing only 2 or 3 reviews a day - that's about 5 minutes work!
It didn't work in time to relax for the Xmas/New Year holidays. Let's see if we can achieve our goal before Easter, otherwise by Thanksgiving it will be closer to 70,000.
- Second set of eyes
Remember that we are the only guardians of quality of new articles, we alone have to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged by non-Reviewer patrollers and that new authors are not being bitten.
- Abuse
This is even more important and extra vigilance is required considering Orangemoody, and
- this very recent case of paid advertising by a Reviewer resulting in a community ban.
- this case in January of paid advertising by a Reviewer, also resulting in a community ban.
- This Reviewer is indefinitely blocked for sockpuppetry.
Coordinator election
Kudpung is stepping down after 6 years as unofficial coordinator of New Page Patrolling/Reviewing. There is enough work for two people and two coords are now required. Details are at NPR Coordinators; nominate someone or nominate yourself. Date for the actual suffrage will be published later.

The general 1RR restriction in ARBPIA
User:L235, it has been pointed out to me the New Guidelines (in the section "Motion: ARBPIA" near the bottom of the page). The key part is the sentence underlined in black. Question: Is this to imply that all new edits made since 26 December 2016 in Palestine-Israel articles can be deleted by editors, and they can challenge the editors who put them there in the first place, without the first editors restoring their edits until a new consensus has been reached? If so, you open the door for "abusive editing," that is to say, the new guidelines allow editors to freely delete areas in articles based on their sole judgment and conviction and which edits had earlier been agreed upon by consensus, and that such changes will remain in force until such a time that a new consensus can be reached. As you see, this can be problematic. Second Question: Do the new guidelines also apply to reverts made in articles where a consensus had already been reached before 26 December 2016, or do they only apply to reverts made after 26 December 2016? To avoid future problems arising from this new edict, can I make this one suggestion, namely, that the new guidelines in Palestine-Israel articles be amended to read with this addition: "Editors who violate this restriction may be blocked without warning by any uninvolved administrator, even on a first offense, or where abuses arise over reverts made in an article where a consensus had already been reached before or after the edict of 26 December 2016 took effect, such editors make themselves liable to disciplinary actions, including blocking."Davidbena (talk) 14:56, 4 April 2017 (UTC)
- @Davidbena: Sorry I didn't get back to you until now. You are correct that the restriction applies to all reverts going forward. Administrators are free to impose additional page-level sanctions, like requiring consensus before changing the article, as a discretionary sanction, and edit-warring of any kind may also be dealt with individually, including with discretionary sanctions. Hope this answers your questions. Thanks, Kevin (aka L235 · t · c) 13:46, 10 April 2017 (UTC)

clerk action request
Hi, i don't know how process for this should work, but I want to ask if you, in your role as an arbitration clerk, could take care of updating Wikipedia:Editing restrictions to drop the now-expired "Suspended restriction" about my editing, when convenient for you. It shows the restriction was to be expired on 5 May 2016, but that was a typo, it was enacted on on 5 November 2016 and was to expire on 5 May 2017. I ask you because you served as clerk in your implementing the decision on 5 November 2016 into the Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Doncram record. I don't mind if you direct me somewhere else or call in any other eyes to check this out. Or I would be very happy if User:Beeblebrox (who I notice edits at Editing restrictions sometimes) or someone else notices this and replies instead. FYI the very last discussion at all related to this is this clarification request of 18 April 2017, in which Beeblebrox suggested a clarification. They were at first unaware of the expiration coming up due to the date typo in place, which they figured out was a typo that no one else had noticed. Anyhow, given that the Editing restriction page has long shown the restriction to be expired, I figure it can't hurt to make a request, and hope this is not a bother. Not urgent. Good luck with your current exams. --doncram 02:56, 9 May 2017 (UTC)

New Page Review - Newsletter No.4
Since rolling out the right in November, just 6 months ago, we now have 805 reviewers, but the backlog is still mysteriously growing fast. If every reviewer did just 55 reviews, the 22,000 backlog would be gone, in a flash, schwoop, just like that!
But do remember: Rather than speed, quality and depth of patrolling and the use of correct CSD criteria are essential to good reviewing. Do not over-tag. Make use of the message feature to let the creator know about your maintenance tags. See the tutorial again HERE. Get help HERE.

WP:ARCA request
I think that motion is needed to explicitly allow participation in RFC and move discussions if that what arbs want.--Shrike (talk) 07:05, 2 July 2017 (UTC)
- @Shrike: The Committee directed me to archive the request without formal action, so there is no formal decision here explaining the Committee's stance. Nonetheless, speaking without my clerk hat on, I would assume, given their comments, that the status quo stands and existing procedures and motions mean what they say with no exceptions. I would encourage you (with the clerk hat back on) to file a new ARCA if material changes develop – for example, in an arb's words, if "examples where this has caused actual problems" arise. New Page Reviewer Newsletter
Backlog update:
- The new page backlog is currently at 18,511 pages. We have worked hard to decrease from over 22,000, but more hard work is needed! Please consider reviewing even just a few pages a a day.
- Some editors are committing to work specifically on patrolling new pages on 15 July. If you have not reviewed new pages in a while, this might be a good time to be involved. Please remember that quality of patrolling is more important than quantity, that the speedy deletion criteria should be followed strictly, and that ovetagging for minor issues should be avoided.
Technology update:
- Several requests have been put into Phabractor to increase usability of the New Pages Feed and the Page Curation toolbar. For more details or to suggest improvements go to Wikipedia:Page Curation/Suggested improvements
- The tutorial has been updated to include links to the following useful userscripts. If you were not aware of them, they could be useful in your efforts reviewing new pages:
- User:Lourdes/PageCuration.js adds a link to the new pages feed and page curation toolbar to your top toolbar on Wikipedia
- User:The Earwig/copyvios.js adds a link in your side toolbox that will run the current page through
General project update:
- Following discussion at Wikipedia talk:New pages patrol/Reviewers, Wikipedia:New pages patrol/Noticeboard has been marked as historical. Wikipedia talk:New pages patrol/Reviewers is currently the most active central discussion forum for the New Page Patrol project. To keep up to date on the most recent discussions you can add it to your watchlist or visit it periodically.

Hello. Thanks for your post here Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Dcasey98. - Currently there are 532 pages in the backlog that were created by non-autoconfirmed users before WP:ACTRIAL. The NPP project is undertaking a drive to clear these pages from the backlog before they hit the 90 day Google index point. Please consider reviewing a few today!
Technology update:
- The Wikimedia Foundation is currently working on creating a new filter for page curation that will allow new page patrollers to filter by extended confirmed status. For more information see: T175225
General project update:
- On 14 September 2017 the English Wikipedia began the autoconfirmed article creation trial. For a six month period, creation of articles in the mainspace of the English Wikipedia will be restricted to users with autoconfirmed status. New users who attempt article creation will now be redirected to a newly designed landing page.
- Before clicking on a reference or external link while reviewing a page, please be careful that the site looks trustworthy. If you have a question about the safety of clicking on a link, it is better not to click on it.

ArbCom 2017 election voter message
Hello, L235. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
If you wish to participate in the 2017 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 3 December 2017 (UTC)
New Page Reviewer Newsletter
Backlog update:
- The new page backlog is currently at 12713 pages. Please consider reviewing even just a few pages each day! If everyone helps out, it will really put a dent in the backlog.
- Currently the backlog stretches back to March and some pages in the backlog have passed the 90 day Google index point. Please consider reviewing some of them!
Outreach and Invitations:
- If you know other editors with a good understanding of Wikipedia policy, invite them to join NPP by dropping the invitation template on their talk page with:
{{subst:NPR invite}}
. Adding more qualified reviewers will help with keeping the backlog manageable.
New Year New Page Review Drive
- A backlog drive is planned for the start of the year, beginning on January 1st and running until the end of the month. Unique prizes will be given in tiers for both the total number of reviews made, as well as the longest 'streak' maintained.
- Note: quality reviewing is extremely important, please do not sacrifice quality for quantity.
General project update:
- ACTRIAL has resulted in a significant increase in the quality of new submissions, with noticeably fewer CSD, PROD, and BLPPROD candidates in the new page feed. However, the majority of the backlog still dates back to before ACTRIAL started, so consider reviewing articles from the middle or back of the backlog.
- The NPP Browser can help you quickly find articles with topics that you prefer to review from within the backlog.
- To keep up with the latest conversation on New Pages Patrol or to ask questions, you can go to Wikipedia talk:New pages patrol/Reviewers and add it to your watchlist.

FWIW shortly after the sanction was imposed I asked Beeblebrox who imposed it about going to arbcom and he indicated that was so far as he remembered permissable. I was more or less acting on an assumption based on that earlier exchange. John Carter (talk) 00:22, 29 December 2017 (UTC) John Carter (talk) 00:22, 29 December 2017 (UTC)
- Hi John Carter, appealing a sanction or seeking its clarification at ArbCom is generally permissible; however, in accordance with WP:BANEX, that exception doesn't cover anything that is not related to your sanction, itself. Best, Kevin (aka L235 · t · c) 01:01, 29 December 2017 (UTC)r
New Years new page backlog drive
Announcing the NPP New Year Backlog Drive!
We have done amazing work so far in December to reduce the New Pages Feed backlog by over 3000 articles! Now is the time to capitalise on our momentum and help eliminate the backlog!
The backlog drive will begin on January 1st and run until January 29th. Prize tiers and other info can be found HERE.
Awards will be given in tiers in two categories:
- The total number of reviews completed for the month.
- The minimum weekly total maintained for all four weeks of the backlog drive.
NOTE: It is extremely important that we focus on quality reviewing. Despite our goal of reducing the backlog as much as possible, please do not rush while reviewing.

American politics
Hi Kevin, what do you mean about the case being closed and declined. It appears still to be open. What was declined exactly? SarahSV (talk) 00:20, 12 January 2018 (UTC)
- Hi @SlimVirgin: The link I provided in the talk page notification was a permalink to the ARCA when it was open (just for reference purposes); the request is no longer on the live version of WP:ARCA and has been archived to Wikipedia_talk:Arbitration/Requests/Case/American_politics_2#Amendment_request:_American_politics_2_(January_2018). Thanks! Kevin (aka L235 · t · c) 01:04, 12 January 2018 (UTC)
- Several editors had expressed concerns about Sandstein’s overall activity at AE and my understand of the filer’s request was for arbs to consider that in their discussions. Does the archiving of this ARCA mean that this was not examined? The closing seems to indicate that the main thrust of the request was an appeal for MONGO,and since his appeal was successful the request should be closed. This was, however, not the full scope, in my view. Mr Ernie (talk) 01:31, 12 January 2018 (UTC)
- @Mr Ernie: ArbCom took no formal action on the amendment request before directing that it be archived. I'm unable to comment on interpretations of the Committee's actions beyond that. Best, Kevin (aka L235 · t · c) 02:23, 12 January 2018 (UTC)
- Kevin, thanks. Who directed that it be archived, and where did that happen? SarahSV (talk) 03:34, 12 January 2018 (UTC)
- @SlimVirgin: KrakatoaKatie asked that it be archived over mail:clerks-l with no arbitrators dissenting or requesting that the ARCA request remain open. Best, Kevin (aka L235 · t · c) 15:33, 12 January 2018 (UTC)
- To us, the point of the filing was to discuss MONGO's restriction. It was lifted and further discussion was therefore not necessary on-wiki, and we agreed on the mailing list that it should be closed and archived. If you or anyone else wants to discuss Sandstein's overall activity at AE or in general, they're able to file a full case. I'm not speaking for any other arbitrator but I think a case request would be required for us to consider it. Katietalk 15:40, 12 January 2018 (UTC)
- Respectfully, SlimVirgin's request plainly stated
This is a request about AE and Sandstein, not about a particular case
at the very beginning. However I do understand how this was shifted into a general appeal. Mr Ernie (talk) 20:37, 12 January 2018 (UTC)- I hear you, but that's too broad for us to consider at ARCA particularly under AP2 which, after all, was the title of the filing. We can't decide at ARCA if or how Sandstein should work at AE. That would take a lot more evaluation in evidence and deliberation than we can do there. The immediate problem was that sanction; it was lifted, so we were done. We've got a lot of work to do on the DS system and we're going to talk about it – like with real voices and everything, in real time – at some point in the very near future. Meanwhile, review of admin conduct requires a case request. Katietalk 00:38, 13 January 2018 (UTC)
- Thank you for the response and yes that makes sense. I hope you guys come up with some great improvements to the DS system; I don’t envy the task. Mr Ernie (talk) 01:26, 13 January 2018 (UTC)

Assistance required to resolve ethical problem with User_talk:Sandstein#Request_to_restore_page_K-3D
I believe that a sensario was deliberately set up to ensure a legitimate page was deleted, the motives are not clear but doing so does erase evidence that could otherwise be used to decline an application to be an administrator, by a person that has been declined in the past. However this is conjecture, even if the loss of information on deletion is fact. The use of concurrent COI and Not Noteworthy claims resulted in myself having to wait before contributing further which resulted in the page being deleted. I do not believe that this catch-22 situation is accidental, and I can't see how anyone who is aware of it would see it as ethical either. I was otherwise in a position to collate available facts and edit the page to match the form of related FOSS software packages (that are not similarly vexed by not noteworthy claims). Can you please advise me as to exactly how I can reverse the damage and ensure that fair process be followed in the future? Dsmatthews (talk) 21:54, 13 January 2018 (UTC)
- @Dsmatthews: I highly encourage you to pursue the dispute resolution steps if you have disagreements with another editor; I'm sorry, I try to refrain from stepping into any disputes on Wikipedia. Best, Kevin (aka L235 · t · c) 23:32, 13 January 2018 (UTC)
2018 Case Record Page Issues
I noticed that there are a few issues with Arbcom (pages) and it's only January...
1. It appears that the 2018 case page uses the source for the 2017 case page but the year wasn't changed.
2. It says that Conduct of Mister Wiki editors was closed on 22 March 2017 (I'm not sure how the month and day are also wrong...)
3. All Cases doesn't include 2018 cases yet.

On 2 February 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Regents of University of California v. - We are very close to eliminating the backlog completely; please help by reviewing a few extra articles each day!
New Year Backlog Drive results:
- We made massive progress during the recent four weeks of the NPP Backlog Drive, during which the backlog reduced by nearly six thousand articles and the length of the backlog by almost 3 months!
General project update:
- ACTRIAL will end it's initial phase on the 14th of March. Our goal is to reduce the backlog significantly below the 90 day index point by the 14th of March. Please consider helping with this goal by reviewing a few additional pages a day.
- Reviewing redirects is an important and necessary part of New Page Patrol. Please read the guideline on appropriate redirects for advice on reviewing redirects. Inappropriate redirects can be re-targeted or nominated for deletion at RfD.

Accidentally blanked RESTRICT entry
Hey, thank you for updating WP:RESTRICT in light of my ban suspensions.
While checking over the changes, I noticed that one from the original case (this one) appeared to be missing, and a quick scan revealed that User:Beyond My Ken appears to have accidentally blanked it while moving the one immediately above it further down.[2]
I'm messaging you as an ArbCom clerk rather than directly asking BMK to fix his own good-faith mistake because I'm really not sure who's allowed to edit that subpage (as of right now, as opposed to two years ago) and I'm worried asking anyone other than an authorized clerk might open a can of worms (and it's an IBAN so I'm very limited in how much I can say about it).
Hijiri 88 (聖やや) 05:03, 18 February 2018 (UTC)
- Since the error was not an official ArbCom action, but was my mistake made in cleaning up the page, I see no reason why I shouldn't fix it myself -- so I did so. You folks may want to check that I fixed it correctly. Beyond My Ken (talk) 05:23, 18 February 2018 (UTC)
