[edit]Pianists
[edit]Hey, I noticed your article on Grant Johannesen. In the past few weeks I categorized most classical pianists (all I could find) into two categories - Classical pianists (the Pianists should have only articles on pop, jazz or... other kind of pianists) and, in Johannesen's case, American pianists (categorized by their nationality). I would love to collaborate with you if you intend to write more articles about pianists because I feel that they have been greatly neglected in the past of Wikipedia. --Missmarple 06:31, 2 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Is Wikipedia:List of Wikipedians by number of edits possibly what you mean, or something else on Wikipedia:Statistics? --Michael Snow 15:37, 13 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Lyric poetry
[edit]Wow, there wasn't an article before now, just a redirect to lyric? I have to agree with the comment by the person who first edited the page. Anyway, it looks like a good start.
I would mention that the opening phrase, calling it the "purest form of poetry", is arguably a value judgment. I can understand what is meant by it, but it warrants being qualified or explained more. Otherwise it's the sort of thing that partisans of dramatic poetry might object to (fortunately, people working on poetry articles don't get into many edit wars). Or if such a comment can be attributed to some significant figure, that would work as well.
I'll try and look for articles that need to be linked to this one. --Michael Snow 17:04, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)
lots of edits, not an admin
[edit]Hi - I made a list of users who've been around long enough to have made lots of edits but aren't admins. It looks like you've left, but if you come back and are at all interested in becoming an admin, can you please add an '*' immediately before your name in this list? I've suggested folks nominating someone might want to puruse this list, although there is certainly no guarantee anyone will ever look at it. I've marked you on this list as "inactve". Feel free to update this as well. Thanks. -- Rick Block (talk) July 3, 2005 18:03 (UTC)
August 30
[edit]Done. You had added Federer, but his article says his birthday is August 8 - it appears that it's Roddick, not Federer, whose birthday is the 30th? --Michael Snow 4 July 2005 00:22 (UTC)
Wikiproject Years Survey
[edit]Hi. To get everybody thinking, I've created a survey about Year pages here. I'm telling all the participants of WikiProject Years and everyone else who has shown an interest in year pages or participated in the discussion. If you could check it out it would be appreciated, and tell anyone you think may be interested.Trevor macinnis 21:11, 28 July 2005 (UTC)
I'm not sure what's the best way to deal with it, as I don't usually follow this or get involved. I believe a fair number of them get removed as likely copyright violations, via Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion and related pages. --Michael Snow 07:03, 12 August 2005 (UTC)
Morone/Moroni
[edit]It seems this was largely because the Catholic Encyclopedia's article on him is Morone, but it elsewhere occasionally spells his name Moroni. Anyway, I've merged the two pages and their histories. --Michael Snow 19:48, 19 September 2005 (UTC)
AfD
[edit]People who deal regularly with deleting articles understandably develop an instinctive dislike for articles about things that are only in planning stages. That's because they're usually dealing with things like upcoming albums from garage bands, or some independent filmmaker's ambitious project that may never materialize. I think that's ultimately what's going on here, and it got noticed because you weren't logged in (people monitor articles created from IP addresses much more closely because most of the junk comes in that way).
Anyway, I've put in my argument for why it should stay. I'll watch what happens from here, but I think that will help clear things up. --Michael Snow 17:05, 11 November 2005 (UTC)

LDS categories
[edit]It depends on the circumstances, I think. For example, Category:Latter Day Saint denominations should almost certainly not be changed, at least if the titles of the articles on the other denominations correctly indicate their preferred spellings. It appears that some categories already use Latter-day Saint because they specifically limit themselves to members of this church. If that limitation is not inherent in how the category is defined, it may not be as appropriate. Glancing at a few articles on RLDS/Community of Christ leaders, they tend not to have been categorized at all (but Frederick M. Smith is in Category:Latter Day Saint leaders), so the contents of the categories may be a little skewed. For that matter, I don't know what shorthand you would use these days to indicate a member of the Community of Christ. Perhaps the issue of categorization practices should be raised with the LDS WikiProject. I'm sure that at least some of the spelling and naming conventions have had to be hashed out before because of differences like this. --Michael Snow 17:29, 15 November 2005 (UTC)
- I have no idea on the hyphenation of African American. Just glancing at the titles of works cited as references for that article, it appears both with and without, so I would guess that the literature on the subject lacks a consistent standard. --Michael Snow 19:30, 15 November 2005 (UTC)
Extended quotes
[edit]In terms of markup, I believe they're handled simply by using HTML tags, as in <blockquote></blockquote>. I would assume that the stylistic standards for it are the same as anywhere else; if it's not in the Manual of Style, it's probably just because there's never been any real controversy about it. --Michael Snow 16:56, 17 November 2005 (UTC)
Israeli politics
[edit]I think it was more the fact that your editing also removed a significant chunk of material, which most people treat as inherently suspicious and especially coming from someone who isn't logged in. That being said, articles on Arab and Israeli issues are often watched closely and fought over considerably, so progress there tends to be slow and sometimes has to be hashed out point by point. --Michael Snow 17:46, 29 November 2005 (UTC)
- Well, I've tried to combine some of the useful material from before with what you added, and replaced the outdated election breakdown with a link to an article specifically about that election, which contains the same information. I also explained what I was doing in the edit summary. Nobody's reverted me yet, so hopefully it can survive that way. --Michael Snow 19:49, 29 November 2005 (UTC)

Hi - thanks for your edits! I thought I'd follow up and ask to see what we missed anything. The Berghof was retained and serves as a retreat for the American military. - you probably meant the Berchtesgadener Hof[1], not Hitler's former residence, the Berghof. The hotel was vacated in 1996 and it looks like it's going to be demolished soon. General Walker Hotel (former Platterhof) has been already torn down. Jbetak 17:50, 17 January 2006 (UTC)

Laser Camera System
[edit]I disagree with you about the need for caps for the Laser Camera System. It is an auto-synchronous triangulation scanning laser camera (no caps). The product name is Laser Camera System (caps). As a wikipedia rookie, I figured I'd just point this out and let you decide whether to change it. --Rctaylor 15:11, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
Compliments
[edit]I haven't seen any particular instruction, so anything unusual is probably just coincidence. Obviously people could always stand to be more friendly instead of combative, and I'm sure most good work goes largely unacknowledged. --Michael Snow 18:57, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
Muller
[edit]The reason that the link for Karl Alex Muller is broken is because the article had to be deleted for copyright reasons; I believe there's an article in the Signpost about it. It needs to be re-created. DS 18:04, 5 November 2006 (UTC)
- Okay, that's good work. Now you can make a redirect; that's where you have a plausible alternate name for the article, and you make it a pointer to the actual name. Here's how to do it.
- First, you have the article Actual Article Name. Then, you create the article Alternate Article Name. The content of "Alternate Article Name" should be as follows: #redirect Actual Article Name - and nothing else. Nothing before or after. Then just save it as a new article, and it'll point you to the actual article name. DS 21:20, 5 November 2006 (UTC)
No, the article is fine, but the link in the table needs to be fixed. Ksnow 21:23, 5 November 2006 (UTC)Ksnow
- No, you're missing my point. Instead of changing (altername name) to (actual name) - considering that (alternate name) might be used in many different articles - just create a redirect so that (alternate name) points to (actual name). DS 22:13, 5 November 2006 (UTC)
I can't find any problem now. What happened, I think, is that in addition to the previous article being deleted, because it had been copied from Britannica, somebody deleted the redirect as well (which was used in the template). Somebody else has since re-created the redirect, so I think it's cleared up. --Michael Snow 21:09, 6 November 2006 (UTC)
- I did some cleaning up on the physics laureates articles the other night. I think I fixed the link to Muller.
- By the way, I notice that you have been replacing the Nobel physics laureate template with the really annoying Nobel Prize in Physics template. Any particular reason? It's much too big, and pretty worthless. This volume of information is better handled with a list than a navbox.--Srleffler 00:01, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
Municipalities of Grisons/Graubünden
[edit]Hi there. I see that you have recently been creating articles about municipalities of Grisons/Graubünden. You might like to know that there is a set of templates ('navboxes') you can add to each article that creates a list of the municipalities of that district. For example, to Ausserferrera, I have added . The templates are at Category:Swiss district templates. If you need help creating the remaining municipality articles, let me know. I created a Perl script that extracted all the table information from the German Wikipedia and created a standard stub article for each municipality, including all those in Graubünden. Docu was going to run a bot (D6) to complete the rest, but it looks like he has moved on to other things. --BillC 23:43, 6 November 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for replying! (I created a few municipality articles myself recently. I hope you don't think I was treading on your toes by doing so.) I created most of the navigation bar templates in that category, so the chance is high that it was I who chose to use 'Grisons' rather than 'Graubünden'. I can't remember my reasons for doing so now, but I suspect that it was because the article on the districts_of_Switzerland called it 'Grisons'. If, as you say, this is not appropriate, then of course it should be changed. I can do this if you like. I have stub articles on all the remaining municipalities sitting on my hard disk. Creating them is a matter of locating the correct file (listed under municipality code) and pasting it into the new article after checking that the links are correct. --BillC 01:23, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
- OK, we can do that then. I can tackle the templates if you do the lists. You probably want to move Category:Municipalities of Grisons to Category:Municipalities of Graubünden as well. Editing the template will also change the category as well, since these are linked by means of a <includeonly> tag. --BillC 01:33, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
- Add: it's late here. I think I shall call it a night and tackle this tomorrow. It doesn't look as if it is trivially easy to move/rename a category, but I am sure it can be done. --BillC 01:38, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

Sound files
[edit]Wikipedia:Media help (Ogg) gives some instructions. I downloaded one of the options to run with Windows Media Player, though I don't remember which. It looks like supposedly Realplayer can do it, at least in some versions, if you can get to that option instead. --Michael Snow 23:38, 14 November 2006 (UTC)
Mountain Passes
[edit]Where are you getting your information on mountain passes? Katr67 07:49, 28 November 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for letting me know. I noticed a couple of the Oregon ones weren't quite right when I verified them with USGS, just so you know. My atlas had some of them wrong too. I don't know if you're still watching those pages. Thanks! Katr67 23:20, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
I am intrigued by your statement that the "-ch" is not necessary. It seems to be part of the name, as used by the town's website, for instance. Is there something I've overlooked? --Stemonitis 12:36, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
Engadin template
[edit]Hi there. You asked about this template. You can see or edit the template by clicking here: Engadin villages. I haven't been involved in editing this template at all, so you might want to get in touch with Docu, who, though he didn't create it, has made several edits to it, including several in the last few days. I am sure you can get it fixed between the two of you. Regards, — BillC talk 20:37, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
WikiProject France
[edit]Hello! We are a group of editors working to improve the quality of France related articles. You look like someone who might be interested in joining us in the France WikiProject and so I thought I'd drop you a line and invite you! We'd love to have you in our project :-) STTW (talk) 16:58, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
- Welcome to the project!! You can announce any France related article/stub that you create at Wikipedia:WikiProject France/New article announcements so that other editors interested in the project can help improve the article. Have a look at the other France tasks which might interest you. Happy editing, STTW (talk) 17:18, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
Germany stubs
[edit]On the Germany portal's talk page, somebody expressed a concern that your new Germany stubs (which are a bit short) do not differentiate between towns, municipalities and villages. (You called many of them "towns" although they do not have town rights). Could you take a look at the stubs again? Thank you, Kusma (talk) 18:47, 29 March 2007 (UTC)
Hi, you recently created an article titled Agrigan. However, there was already an existing article titled Agrihan, and these are in fact the same island / volcano. So I have gone ahead and merged the text of Agrigan into Agrihan, and changed Agrigan to a redirect. In the future, please check for pre-existing articles under alternate spellings before creating articles. In the case of volcanoes, the best way to do so is to go the the Global Volcanism Program page for the volcano (e.g. Agrigan), and click the tab "Synonyms and Subfeatures". Thanks for your attention to this issue in the future, and thanks also for your efforts at creating several new volcano articles. Also, please consider joining WikiProject Volcanoes. --Seattle Skier (talk) 09:09, 9 April 2007 (UTC)
German district templates
[edit]Hi Ksnow, I see you've created navigation templates for virtually all districts of Germany. I think that's simply wonderful, thanks! One item I think is missing in the templates is the Verwaltungsgemeinschaften, Ämter etc., do you have a suggestion how to include those in a nice and consistent way? Another thing is that several links in the templates do not point to the right places, and of course not all municipalities in Germany have an article yet. Maybe we should make a list of all municipalities (from de:Kategorie:Liste (Gemeinden in Deutschland), for instance under WP:GER) and check all articles. Markussep 12:51, 3 May 2007 (UTC)
- I'll give it a try, but it may take a while, I don't have much time right now. There have been several reorganizations in Eastern Germany (mergers of Ämter etc.), and I'm afraid I've done some damage myself by thinking noone would be interested in municipalities with 900 inhabitants, that are part of an Amt. I guess I'll start with a list of all municipalities, and update district articles and templates later. Markussep 14:53, 3 May 2007 (UTC)
Infobox German Location
[edit]Hi, you asked me a question about the infobox for German places. I see Agathoclea already solved the problem: there was a comma in the population number. The automatic population density calculation doesn't work then. If you want to know more about the template, see Infobox German Location. User:52 Pickup is the main contributor to the template, but you can also leave questions and remarks at the template talk page. Markussep Talk 18:22, 5 November 2007 (UTC)
- I hope that takes care of it - I rarely edit templates and would have a hard time sorting it out. In other trivia, somebody came up with a list of editors who had created the most articles. You were 24th in all of Wikipedia - 20th if you disregard bot accounts. Wow! --Michael Snow 18:29, 5 November 2007 (UTC)
- I noticed you have done a lot more since then. Can I request one thing - would you also copy the "Gemeindeschlüssel" - it is only Metadata, but a very important one helping to identify the place when for example population data will get updated with the help of a bot. Thanks.Agathoclea 21:56, 6 November 2007 (UTC)
- You've been working very hard on Bavaria, great! On Wikipedia:WikiProject Germany/Cities/Bavaria you can see which districts are still "missing", currently Amberg-Sulzbach, Bayreuth, Cham, Coburg, Hof, Kronach, Kulmbach, Neumarkt, Neustadt (Waldnaab), Regensburg, Rosenheim, Schwandorf, Starnberg, Tirschenreuth, Traunstein, Weilheim-Schongau and Wunsiedel. That's 17 out of 71 districts, not bad at all! Markussep Talk 18:40, 11 November 2007 (UTC)
- All Bavarian infoboxes done, thanks! I'll move over to Lower Saxony now. Markussep Talk 18:26, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
- The to-do states are Lower Saxony, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Schleswig-Holstein and Thuringia. What I've doing up to now, also with Bavaria, is going through the infoboxes for errors (for instance solving the "Unrecognised punctuation character" problem), missing images, replacing old infoboxes etc., and keeping score at the wikiproject page. If you like, you can do Lower Saxony (still many districts to go), and I will check the boxes. Markussep Talk 08:16, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
- Lower Saxony went fast, only Uelzen to do. Let's do Mecklenburg-Vorpommern next. Markussep Talk 21:52, 18 November 2007 (UTC)
- Mecklenburg-Vorpommern done, let's do Rhineland-Palatinate next. Markussep Talk 17:19, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
Sponheim
[edit]Hi, you asked me about the "former country" infobox in the Sponheim article. What is the problem? Markussep Talk 15:26, 3 December 2007 (UTC)
- Found it, the problem was the names of the fields for the coats of arms for the successor states, they were "flag_s2" etc. instead of "image_s2" etc. Markussep Talk 15:38, 3 December 2007 (UTC)
Year page formatting of multiple events
[edit]Hello, I'm sending you this message since you were involved in the August 2005 survey on year pages. As I don't know if you've gathered, somebody has been fighting for a change to the house style on how to notate multiple events on the same date. A discussion is currently in progress - your contribution would be appreciated! -- Smjg (talk) 15:36, 15 December 2007 (UTC)
Ostvorpommern
[edit]Oh hey, you fixed the info boxen for Ostvorpommern. Did you get all of them? I was going to make my through when I had a chance, but I think you got them all. Yay for trans-language wiki-cooperation! Sethwoodworth (talk) 20:43, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

Infobox German Location
[edit]Sorry, I don't know how to keep the width of the infobox within reasonable limits. You can ask User:52 Pickup. What I've been doing so far is removing everything after the ".de", but that's rather tedious of course. I saw you finished Rhineland-Palatinate the past few days, good work! Markussep Talk 11:20, 27 December 2007 (UTC)
- another option I have used is to insert a break into the link in question. Agathoclea (talk) 12:51, 27 December 2007 (UTC)
Bad Elster
[edit]Happy New Year. For personal infomation, can you explain the logic of your edit. Particlarly
- Why the template was changed.
- Why the coat of arms was removed
- Why you use Sister City for Partner Town- which is incorrect in that neither are cities- and sister city is not current British English or even a direct translation of the German.
Mit freundliche Grüsse ClemRutter (talk) 14:47, 1 January 2008 (UTC)
- Hi, the template is actually identical, "Infobox Ort in Deutschland" redirects to "Infobox German Location". Ksnow updated the infobox with information from German wikipedia, that's part of our quest to add infoboxes to all German municipality articles, see Wikipedia:WikiProject Germany/Cities. I added the coat of arms image, I suppose Ksnow overlooked the image in Commons. Fröhliches Neujahr! Markussep Talk 15:59, 1 January 2008 (UTC)
- Nice to see activity on the template front. However, this sister city terminology is problematic.
- 'Partner towns' is a clear British English term. Let me explain. When I was an elected member of Rochester-upon-Medway City Council we had one Twinned Town- Valenciennes which has a formal twinning agreement, and a partner town Cadiz, we refered to them as our two partner towns. As Valenciennes was not a city- neither would use the term 'twin city'.
- We investigated joining the Eurotowns network but Brighton and Hove pipped us to the post, and thus has 14 partner towns none of which are twin towns. Trnava told us that it was a twin town, but no paperwork could be found so we accepted it as a partner town.
- Our solicitor was unhappy with the lack of clarity and legal implications of becoming a twin town which would fall outside the provisions of the Local Government Act, so no other twin towns were created. Things have moved on, Rochester has merged into Medway, lost its city status, and political control has changed. A report was written for my succesor, with which I do not entirely agree, but it explains the different levels in the partnership/twinning process. http://www.medway.gov.uk/f20060119r-6.pdf.
- Rotherham has a twin town- St Quentin, and a partner town Riesa. http://www.rotherham.gov.uk/graphics/YourCouncil/Twin+Town/Partner+Town+-+News.htm
- Wolverhampton has three partner towns http://www.wolverhampton.gov.uk/government_democracy/european/partner_towns/
- The Bad Elster, town website says: Am 08. Juli und 23. September 1990 unterzeichneten die Bürgermeister Rudolf Forcher und Christoph Flämig die Partnerschaftsurkunden in Bad Waldsee und Bad Elster.. I am inclined to read this as a full twinning agreement, but at no point does either suggest that they are anything larger than a large village/small town. So for safety I used the term Partner Town, and I still see this as the best translation, and would like to revert the edit unless anyone can give any reasons I have missed.ClemRutter (talk) 18:53, 1 January 2008 (UTC)
Another editor has added the "prod" template to the article Gammelsdorf, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but the editor doesn't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and has explained why in the article (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Notability). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia or discuss the relevant issues at its talk page. If you remove the prod template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Schleswig-Holstein
[edit]Hi, I just finished the last district of Saxony-Anhalt (good work, most of it on your part!), and have started working on Schleswig-Holstein, the Dithmarschen district. Markussep Talk 21:07, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

Moses Amschel Bauer
[edit]I see you have a history of working on the article Moses Amschel Bauer. I am looking at it from the project Wikipedia:Unreferenced articles where it is one of the longest unreferenced tagged articles that does not meet at least the barest minimum of verifiability. It has been tagged and completely without references since June 2006. It would be extremely helpful if you had some references you could add to the article to help support its verifiability and notability. Thanks for any help you can give. Being that yo are currently doing a lot of work around French commune articles, I invite you to join the above WikiProject. Happy editing! Editorofthewiki 13:26, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
Soissonnais
[edit]Hi, I saw you changed "Soissonnais" into "Soisson" in some articles. This refers to the fr:Communauté d'agglomération du Soissonnais. That article doesn't exist (yet) in English wikipedia. "Soissonnais" is the French name for the area around the city Soissons. "Soisson" doesn't mean anything, better leave it as "Soissonnais". I'm working on Saône-et-Loire now, lots of infoboxes with crucial missing data (coordinates, area). Markussep Talk 13:47, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
- Am I (going to create articles for cantons etc.)? I wasn't really planning to, I just made two or three of them. I suppose there has been discussion about commune vs. municipality, I'm happy with commune. Markussep Talk 21:06, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
- So you meant "Soissons", with "s". I guess there's a subtle difference between Soissons and Soissonnais, like between Beaujeu and Beaujolais. About "commune", it's in the usual English dictionaries (Oxford, Merriam-Webster, Cambridge), so there's no problem using it. Markussep Talk 21:24, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
- Let's think about that when someone creates the article. BTW it's not used as an adjective here, that would be "agglomération Soissonnais". Markussep Talk 21:30, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
French communes
[edit]Hi Ksnow. I have noticed you italicising the word "commune" in articles on French communes. The term commune occurs in most English dictionaries and as such should not be italicised. Let me know what you think. Regards, Kiwipete (talk) 01:15, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
- That is why the word should be wikilinked to the article Communes of France. Kiwipete (talk) 10:20, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
- thanks for fr:Trémouille and others link of city.--Macassar (talk) 07:38, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

Spaces
[edit]Hello, I see you are creating navigational boxes for the French communes. Just a little tip regarding spacing the : there should be no space between the link to a commune and the template. Example:
- Good: Commune ABC Commune DEF
- Bad: Commune ABC Commune DEF
Thanks, Renata (talk) 00:39, 23 April 2008 (UTC)
- They do make a difference, however small. In the template the dot is already spaced from the left, so if you add additional space, there will be two spaces. And me, sometimes too detail orientated, will notice it :) It's a small thing, but it if you are going to make new templates, just don't do it. It's easy to fix. Renata (talk) 00:48, 23 April 2008 (UTC)
Auvergne
[edit]Bon jour. Please note that Auvergne is a disambiguation page. When you are adding infoboxes to articles on French localities, it would be preferable to format them with région=Auvergne
rather than just région=Auvergne
. Thanks. --Russ (talk) 20:50, 24 April 2008 (UTC)
