Recent changes
- Wikis using the Growth team tools can now show the name of a newcomer's mentor anywhere through a magic word. This can be used for welcome messages or userboxes.
- A new version of the VideoCutTool is now available. It enables cropping, trimming, audio disabling, and rotating video content. It is being created as part of the developer outreach programs.
Problems
- There was a problem with the job queue. This meant some functions did not save changes and mass messages were delayed. This did not affect wiki edits. [1]
- Some editors may not be logged in to their accounts automatically in the latest versions of Firefox and Safari. [2]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 2 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 3 March. It will be on all wikis from 4 March (calendar).

Administrators' newsletter – March 2021
[edit]News and updates for administrators from the past month (February 2021).
Interface administrator changes
- A request for comment is open that proposes a process for the community to revoke administrative permissions. This follows a 2019 RfC in favor of creating one such a policy.
- A request for comment is in progress to remove F7 (invalid fair-use claim) subcriterion a, which covers immediate deletion of non-free media with invalid fair-use tags.
- A request for comment seeks to grant page movers the
delete-redirect
userright, which allows moving a page over a single-revision redirect, regardless of that redirect's target. The full proposal is at Wikipedia:Page mover/delete-redirect. - A request for comment asks if sysops may
place the General sanctions/Coronavirus disease 2019 editnotice template on pages in scope that do not have page-specific sanctions
? - There is a discussion in progress concerning automatic protection of each day's featured article with Pending Changes protection.
- When blocking an IPv6 address with Twinkle, there is now a checkbox with the option to just block the /64 range. When doing so, you can still leave a block template on the initial, single IP address' talkpage.
- When protecting a page with Twinkle, you can now add a note if doing so was in response to a request at WP:RfPP, and even link to the specific revision.
- There have been a number of reported issues with Pending Changes. Most problems setting protection appear to have been resolved (phab:T273317) but other issues with autoaccepting edits persist (phab:T275322).
- By motion, the discretionary sanctions originally authorized under the GamerGate case are now authorized under a new Gender and sexuality case, with sanctions
authorized for all edits about, and all pages related to, any gender-related dispute or controversy and associated people.
Sanctions issued under GamerGate are now considered Gender and sexuality sanctions. - The Kurds and Kurdistan case was closed, authorizing standard discretionary sanctions for
the topics of Kurds and Kurdistan, broadly construed
.
- By motion, the discretionary sanctions originally authorized under the GamerGate case are now authorized under a new Gender and sexuality case, with sanctions
- Following the 2021 Steward Elections, the following editors have been appointed as stewards: AmandaNP, Operator873, Stanglavine, Teles, and Wiki13.

Nomination for deletion of Template:Lht
[edit]Template:Lht has been nominated for deletion. You are invited to comment on the discussion at the entry on the Templates for discussion page. Elli (talk | contribs) 05:54, 7 March 2021 (UTC)
Hi, I'd like you to reconsider your closure of this deletion review request. You closed the DRV as "overturn to redirect". While that was the solution sought by the appellant as well as a few other people, it was not a solution that enjoyed consensus in the discussion. That's because five people (including myself as the AfD closer) would have endorsed the deletion. Because there was no consensus to undo the closure, you should not have done so. Additionally, in your closure, you made no attempt at establishing what the consensus of the DRV discussion was. Instead, you closed the DRV based on your reading of the AfD, which is to say, you cast a "supervote" by substituting your preferred outcome of the AfD for my interpretation of the AfD's consensus. That was also inappropriate in my view. Regards, Sandstein 13:42, 7 March 2021 (UTC)
- DRVs are closed based on the merits of the arguments, and the "endorse" !voters failed to identify how exactly the AfD supported a consensus not to redirect. This is the difference between AfD and RfD: AfD applies to content, RfD applies to titles. There is no such thing as a consensus to delete at AfD per se, only a consensus to not have a standalone article on a particular subject; deletion is simply a byproduct of a topic not deserving an article and having no place to redirect the title. Thus "delete" and "redirect" !votes are treated the same way at AfD unless the "delete" !votes specifically address the viability of a redirect (basically bringing RfD-style arguments to the AfD avoid the WP:BURO of starting a separate RfD down the line). Otherwise, the page can be redirected to any suitable target, and an RfD is required to delete the redirect.
- You can also think about it this way: After an AfD, someone can unilaterally create a redirect at the redlink, and it wouldn't fall under G4; it would require RfD to delete that redirect. It is also perfectly reasonable to restore the history under a redirect unless it contains policy violations. -- King of ♥ ♦ ♣ ♠ 22:27, 7 March 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you for closing the DRV, King of Hearts. Your close accurately assessed the consensus and strengths of the DRV participants' arguments with regard to Wikipedia:Deletion policy#Alternatives to deletion. Cunard (talk) 11:13, 8 March 2021 (UTC)
- King of Hearts, that is a reasonable opinion to express in an AfD, but it is inappropriate to express in a DRV closure. The DRV closer is supposed to determine whether consensus exists to overturn a contested AfD closure, not to substitute their own judgment about whether an article should be deleted for that of both the AfD and the DRV participants. You did not even attempt to assess the consensus in the DRV, and I am very disappointed in you for that. Please consider reopening the DRV and letting somebody else close it, or I'll seek community review of your action. Regards, Sandstein 16:51, 8 March 2021 (UTC)
- Again: Cunard didn't even have to open a DRV to overturn your close. He could have just created a redirect himself, and then asked an admin nicely to restore the history underneath the redirect. The fact that he !voted in the AfD is irrelevant; otherwise it creates a perverse incentive for those wishing to merge/redirect to avoid AfD participation, and then create the redirect. It is only relevant if the other AfD participants have addressed the issue of a redirect and explicitly rejected it.
- Anyways, the proper venue to discuss the status of a redirect is RfD, so I have opened up the discussion: Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2021 March 9#Squad (app). -- King of ♥ ♦ ♣ ♠ 04:11, 9 March 2021 (UTC)
- King of Hearts, I am not contesting the creation of the redirect. I am contesting your DRV closure. I have asked for community review of this and a related matter at WP:AN#Review of DRV supervotes by King of Hearts. Sandstein 12:05, 9 March 2021 (UTC)

- The New Discussion tool will soon be a new discussion tools beta feature for on most Wikipedias. The goal is to make it easier to start new discussions. [6]
Future changes
- There will be a number of changes to make it easier to work with templates. Some will come to the first wikis in March. Other changes will come to the first wikis in June. This is both for those who use templates and those who create or maintain them. You can read more.
- Reference Previews will become a default feature on some wikis on 17 March. They will share a setting with Page Previews. If you prefer the Reference Tooltips or Navigation-Popups gadget you can keep using them. If so Reference Previews won't be shown. [7][8]
- New JavaScript-based functions will not work in Internet Explorer 11. This is because Internet Explorer is an old browser that doesn't work with how JavaScript is written today. Everything that works in Internet Explorer 11 today will continue working in Internet Explorer for now. You can read more.

[edit]March 17, 7pm: ONLINE WikiWednesday Salon NYC with Wikimedia Community Ireland for St Patrick's Day | |
---|---|
You are invited to join the Wikimedia NYC community for our monthly "WikiWednesday" evening salon (7-8pm) and knowledge-sharing workshop. To join the meeting from your computer or smartphone, just visit this link. More information about how to connect is available on the meetup page. We look forward to seeing local Wikimedians, but would also like to invite folks from the greater New York metropolitan area (and beyond!) who might not typically be able to join us in person! As this WikiWednesday coincides with Saint Patrick's Day, we will have a guest speaker from Wikimedia Community Ireland, about Irish-language Wikipedia, the efforts of the community in Ireland, and personal work on historical biographies with a special Irish-New York connection. This month will also include a discussion of Black WikiHistory Month in February and WikiWomen's History Month and Art+Feminism in March, and of course the great work that is being done in these topical areas throughout the year. If there's a project you'd like to share or a question you'd like answered, just let us know by adding it to the agenda or the talk page.

Recent changes
- Wikis that are part of the desktop improvements project can now use a new search function. The desktop improvements and the new search will come to more wikis later. You can also test it early.
- Editors who put up banners or change site-wide JavaScript code should use the client error graph to see that their changes has not caused problems. You can read more. [9]
Problems
- Due to database issues the Wikimedia Beta Cluster was read-only for over a day.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 16 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 17 March. It will be on all wikis from 18 March (calendar).
Future changes
- You can add a newline or carriage return character to a custom signature if you use a template. There is a proposal to not allow them in the future. This is because they can cause formatting problems. [10][11]
- You will be able to read but not edit 12 wikis for a short period of time on 23 March at 06:00 (UTC). This could take 30 minutes but will probably be much faster.
- You can use Quarry for SQL queries to the Wiki Replicas. Cross-database
JOINS
will no longer work from 23 March. There will be a new field to specify the database to connect to. If you think this affects you and you need help you can post on Phabricator or on Wikitech. PAWS and other ways to do SQL queries to the Wiki Replicas will be affected later. [12]

SPI clerking?
[edit]Hi, your name is listed on Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/SPI/Clerks under "Temporarily inactive clerks", and I noticed you haven't been active at SPI for some time. Do you think you would eventually like to return to clerking one day? If not, that's okay too, and I can remove your name from the list of clerks. Thanks for all the work you've done as a clerk! Sro23 (talk) 12:36, 17 March 2021 (UTC)

Self promotion scope
[edit]I have a COI for University Bible Fellowship and working on making the article more balanced with reliable references. There is a Reactions section. I want to add some people's reaction who have positive opinions unlike some others mentioned in the section. But their endorsements are in the groups's homepage. Do you think it is a case of self promotion? Dlee612 (talk) 03:31, 19 March 2021 (UTC)
- WP:WEIGHT is the guiding principle:
- If a viewpoint is in the majority, then it should be easy to substantiate it with reference to commonly accepted reference texts;
- If a viewpoint is held by a significant minority, then it should be easy to name prominent adherents;
- If a viewpoint is held by an extremely small minority, it does not belong on Wikipedia, regardless of whether it is true or you can prove it, except perhaps in some ancillary article.

Recent changes
- There is a Wikipedia app for KaiOS phones. They don't have a touch screen so readers navigate with the phone keys. There is now a simulator so you can see what it looks like.
- The reply tool and new discussion tool are now available as the "Discussion tools" beta feature in almost all wikis except German Wikipedia.
Problems
- You will be able to read but not edit twelve wikis for a short period of time on 23 March at 06:00 (UTC). This can also affect password changes, logging in to new wikis, global renames and changing or confirming emails. This could take 30 minutes but will probably be much faster.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 23 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 24 March. It will be on all wikis from 25 March (calendar).
- Syntax highlighting colours will change to be easier to read. This will soon come to the first wikis. [13]
Future changes
- Flagged revisions will no longer have multiple tags like "tone" or "depth". It will also only have one tier. This was changed because very few wikis used these features and they make the tool difficult to maintain. [14][15]
- Gadgets and user scripts can access variables about the current page in JavaScript. In 2015 this was moved from
wg*
tomw.config
.wg*
will soon no longer work. [16]

You placed the David Petraeus article under the Pending Changes protection on December 3, 2012 and it has remained under the PC protection since then. Could you please unprotect the article now? It is not subject to active vandalism or BLP or copyvio violations. Looking at the page history for January through March I see only one edit that was an actual vandalism attempt. I don't think the article qualifies for the PC protection now. Thanks, Nsk92 (talk) 20:03, 22 March 2021 (UTC)

Recent changes
- Some very old web browsers don’t work well with the Wikimedia wikis. Some old code for browsers that used to be supported is being removed. This could cause issues in those browsers. [17]
- IRC recent changes feeds have been moved to a new server. Make sure all tools automatically reconnect to
irc.wikimedia.org
and not to the name of any specific server. Users should also consider switching to the more modern EventStreams. [18]
Problems
- When you move a page that many editors have on their watchlist the history can be split. It might also not be possible to move it again for a while. This is because of a job queue problem. [19]
- Some translatable pages on Meta could not be edited. This was because of a bug in the translation tool. The new MediaWiki version was delayed because of problems like this. [20][21]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 30 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 31 March. It will be on all wikis from 1 April (calendar).
