Viriditas, thanks, that's very thoughtful. HoppyH invited me to join in as a contributor instead, so I've been working some on that end.

I think I'm backing off from the article for now anyway. A longstanding contributor has been mass-reverting whole sections of changes, including re-adding problems like unsourced information, and we've had trouble getting him to engage on the talk page even with direct questions and pings. I realize I could keep reverting the guy myself, but I no longer have a young Wikipedian's enthusiasm for this kind of thing. I may rejoin the article in a while.

But kudos to you for taking on this huge review! It'll be a great accomplishment if we can get TJ at least up to GA. -- Khazar2 (talk) 13:21, 1 November 2015 (UTC)

Yeah, he's the one. I appreciate the offer. If you don't mind, though, I'll try to put up another revision of the disputed sections on Monday or Tuesday. I have some ideas for how to revise what HoppyH and I had that might satisfy him as well, so far as I understand his reason for reverting from the edit summaries. He seems a bit hostile, and it might help things go easier if he saw some kind of compromise version before we engage further. FYI I recall a few years ago a battle royal concerning the use of postage stamps in presidential bios with this user. I think in that case we were doing the GAR on Lincoln. Nice work on the article. It's looking very good. There is some inconsistency here and there, such as the use of the comma which is lacking in many places. I also think the Burr material meanders a bit beyond the biography, and I'm wondering if it should be trimmed. I also made a comment about the lead section and the lack of detail regarding the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom. More later... Viriditas (talk) 07:57, 10 November 2015 (UTC)

Thanks! I think I agree with you on the Burr biography section; that's one of the few I haven't yet attempted to trim (because of the research involved in doing so). But I can get to it this morning. I definitely agree that the VA statute could use a bit more context. I'll hit the books.

I can also take a pass to make commas more consistent today. Comma inconsistencies are likely my fault. Hoppyh consistently omits the serial comma; I've been mostly following that style but occasionally fall into my old habits of using it without thinking.-- Khazar2 (talk) 12:24, 10 November 2015 (UTC)

The lead issue is still unaddressed, but like I said before, there's time for that. Good work on the Burr section, it's a real pleasure to read. However, there are older vestiges of overlap and overlinking from Burr bleeding into the next section ("George Clinton replaced Burr as his running mate following Burr's killing of Hamilton in their duel of July that year"). Re: your comment on the GA review, I think it'd be helpful if I stepped away from this one for a few days. I honestly thought I was following your recommendation for a briefer article (which has also been my own goal) by opposing Gwillhickers' expansions, but if you feel like that's getting bogged down in minutiae, I don't mind withdrawing to let everyone take some deep breaths, and to let Gwillhickers expand as s/he sees fit. This'll also give you a little time to see what's left on your list (I think the only point currently outstanding is your suggestion to add the word "polymath", but I could have missed one), and when I'm back on, I'll work through the remaining points as rapidly as possible. I'd also still really love to discuss the lead section with you when you're ready. Hopefully Hoppy will be back from vacation by then, too. Yes and no. I don't care about West Point, but I do care about producing a concise and readable article. The first few times Gwillhickers insisted we include something in spite of the RSs, I felt as you did about "picking battles"--I gave in, and even spent a few hours tracking down sources for uncited information s/he insisted on restoring. But we're now in the fifth round of that, and if I can't even discuss the situation without getting reprimanded by the GA reviewer, it makes my situation there tricky. I don't mind either your push for brevity or G's push for expansion, but I don't see why it's important to cut a few sentences from "Burr" but inappropriate to debate the same amount of material being added to "West Point".

So no hard feelings at all, but after sleeping on it, I think I'm going to move onto another article for now. Since the only outstanding point right now is "polymath", the article is hopefully close enough to the finish that someone else can carry it over. I think it would also be helpful if you and Gwillhickers engaged directly about your differing visions on length, slavery, etc. at this point, instead of continuing to both bounce off me.

Still, I deeply appreciate your efforts here. The article's improved enormously in the past two weeks, and your suggestions and encouragement have been a big part of that. I just want to take a moment to remind you that you yourself said that the Gwillhickers business was making you crazy. Those were your words. And since this was the fifth time you decided to hop on and ride the Gwillhickers Crazy Train, I can't see how continuing down this path helps. His vision of article improvement is vastly different than ours. He doesn't follow basic MOS and he argues for including minor points. We are agreed on that. No need to be condescending. My early experience was that if left to his own devices, Gwillhickers starts mass-reverting to his desired version of the article. Talking to him to head that off, though repetitive, seemed the least bad option (I thought this was why you made such a point of inviting and re-inviting him to the discussion yourself?). But if I'm also taking flak from you on my other flank while dealing with him, I feel like the hassle's gotten to be more than it's worth. We disagree on the best approach, it happens, no hard feelings; remember I was just a guest in this GA anyway (Hoppy is the nom). You seem close to the end and will be able to see it through fine without me.

I think you've misread what I said above and what I meant when I pointed out that the West Point discussion wasn't helping. I don't know why you feel personally reprimanded by what I said. Thomas Jefferson lament

Sorry to see the GA review at Thomas Jefferson fail. The longstanding tension among collaborators — but there is collaboration — seems to be between editors who are newly acquainted with Jefferson, primarily graduate students who must concentrate on the most recently published “new history” as a professional requirement, and those who are more deeply read in the historiography who can see beyond the current anachronistic fashions. A successful review will require an appreciation of the vagarities in the literature on the part of the reviewer, I suppose. As an aside, I consider it a point of great personal satisfaction that my contribution on Jefferson and Democracy was not cut in the Review process… American democracy did not all begin with Jackson…the Talk page is motoring along with little passing reference to the review except for a determination to hash out something more comprehensive on Church and State before the next try ... Thanks, VH! It was my pleasure, and sorry I didn't stick around to see the whole thing through. I wouldn't sweat the GA star too much. Though I've refrained from reading much since, I know the article improved a lot just in the few weeks I was working on it with you all. Factual errors were fixed, important lacunae were filled in, all information was sourced, etc.

I think you're right that a historiographic approach would be the best way to break the deadlock on a few issues on that page. For example, the discussion of slavery & Hemings might be handled by noting the movement from 1860s-1920s historians (who generally saw TJ as an ineffectual hypocrite), to 1930s-1960s historians (the "heroic" school), to 1970s-2010s historians (who swung back to being critical on slavery, but took a more balanced view overall). There's a few book-length historiographies that would be of use for that.

Once the article is stable and you're going for another try, you all should also consider more actively recruiting a reviewer who's well versed in American history--somebody like Rjensen or Wehwalt, maybe. One problem that seemed to come up was our reviewer going to Wikipedia's daughter articles to judge what weight/slant certain topics should get in the main article, rather than independent literature. The article was clearly never going to pass on stability grounds regardless (as a GA reviewer, I would have failed it long before the point V did--s/he was very patient with us), but it would help to get a more focused review from the beginning, and help to have a reviewer who can more authoritatively jump in on these discussions of historical weight. That's not a criticism of V; just thinking about what would help guide this mammoth and controversial GA through the process.

The file File:Knots, Cosimo Cavallaro.jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-free image of a work of art being used for decorative purposes in an article about the person who created it. Typically, non-free use would be acceptable as the primary means of identification in a stand-alone article about the work of art itself, but a much stronger non-free justification is required for other articles and other uses. This particular piece is not itself the subjuect of any sourced commentary within the article, so the context required by WP:NFCC#8 is lacking.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.
