Issues of Notability and COI

Hi Kurt, I thought it best to consult you as the first editor who reviewed my work. I have submitted an autobiography as an article in response to several requests for my resume from various sectors. While done in good faith, my lack of familiarity of the rules caused the nomination of the article Benito T. de Leon for deletion on issues of WP:Notability and WP:COI. Noting that the article is about myself, it would just perhaps be best for other editors to debate on it. May I solicit your advise how to proceed from here. Thanks very much for your assistance.-Sultan-Commander (talk) 11:29, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

I suggest you allow the AfD process to proceed; as I have seen from the debate page, only the nominator posted "Delete", all other editors are either mulling it over or voted "Keep" and "Fix". Chances are, your article may survive the deletion nomination. In the future, it is best to use references from third-party sources; blogs are not good sources for citations as these are primary sources from the subject of the article. That's the reason for the WP:COI issue. — KvЯt GviЯnЭlБ Speak! 07:41, 12 January 2009 (UTC)
Thanks very much for your advise. Please continue to point out other errors or violations of Wiki conventions so I can improve the treatment of the article. Only the best—Sultan-Commander (talk) 12:42, 13 January 2009 (UTC)
No problem, Colonel. The article did survive AfD. Happy editing and Cheers! — KvЯt GviЯnЭlБ Speak! 10:00, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

I don't know if it should be in this page or on your User Page, but I post it just the same:

Speedy deletion of Bignay, Valenzuela City

A tag has been placed on Bignay, Valenzuela City, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:

No context

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as an appropriate article, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is appropriate, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Johnlemartirao (talk) 14:47, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

The above notice should have been placed on the original author's talk page. — KvЯt GviЯnЭlБ Speak! 04:54, 9 February 2009 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of A-11 offense

A tag has been placed on A-11 offense requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a blatant copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Rtphokie (talk) 02:33, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

In my opinion, speedy deletion would be commensurate for an article which is on the whole, is blatantly in violation of copyright. That does not seem to be the case here; from what little I have done to review the edits in question, it would seem that only a section concerning the legality of the A-11 offense is in question. Contributors should simply work to re-word this section to avoid copyvio. Speedy deletion seems overkill, iMHo. — KvЯt GviЯnЭlБ Speak! 02:32, 6 March 2009 (UTC)

I nom'med the article for DYK. Hopefully it passes.--Lenticel (talk) 11:43, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Wolfgang_withfrancis.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Bluemask (talk) 04:35, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

Actually, it is not. When the image was first tagged as non-free, the image failed the first criterion (see WP:NFCC) because the group is still active and therefore a free image can be created. Now that the image is tagged as GFDL, there are more concerns. First, GFDL requires an author so please specify the author or who made the image. Next, we need proof that the author releases the image under GFDL. --Bluemask (talk) 12:17, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free image (Image:RRDT-small.jpg)

⚠

Thanks for uploading Image:RRDT-small.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Image permission problem with Image:Wolfgang_withfrancis.jpg

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Wolfgang_withfrancis.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the image (or other media file) agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the GFDL or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the image to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the image has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the image's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Images lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thanks for uploading File:Jett.JPG. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

Hiligaynon Language on Wikipedia

Hello Professor! Good day to you! I am Tagimata one of the existing contributors of Wikipedia Hiligaynon. I just recently had a chat with Sir GerardM http://translatewiki.net/wiki/User_talk:GerardM at http://translatewiki.net/wiki/Special:FreenodeChat, and he was happy that the Babel and most used messages in WikiMedia has already been localized. He then said that they need three active contributors for a period of a few month and they are looking for in between 200 and 300 articles in our Hiligaynon Language. As of the moment, we have 62 articles in our Hiligaynon Wikipedia Test at the incubator. I hope that we can tell other hiligaynon / ilonggo contributors about the recnt development of our own native language. and also I hope that you can help contribute. Madamu gid nga salamat in advance! --Tagimata (talk) 15:12, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

Hello Tagimata, I'm so glad there are now more active contributors to the Hiligaynon Wikipedia. I have been translating those system messages to the best of my ability, but recently I have had some occupations in the real world that caused me to neglect the translation work. Be assured that I will continue to support the Hiligaynon Wikipedia with translations and other contributions. Thanks for coming on board. Cheers! — KvЯt GviЯnЭlБ Speak! 05:59, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Tallan Latz

The article Tallan Latz has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Not notable per WP:MUSIC.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the Proposed Deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. batchoy

Thank You for re-editing my posts. However, if setting the records straight is considered non-sense and vandalism, how could we give common knowledge facts in our locality, be given a chance to be known? For your information, Federico Guillergan's account of the origins of lapaz batchoy only came up when their name was bought by a big fastfood chain. Is there any sense in the word "bats" and "choy"(from chopsuey)?

If you want to help eliminate non-sense about Iloilo City's most famous dish, you should help eliminate non-sense press releases which humiliates the Lapaz Batchoy community in Lapaz, Iloilo City.

Again, Thank You and more power. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Pansobilya (talkcontribs) 04:22, 7 September 2009 (UTC)

Wikipedia adheres to a certain set of rules for creating and maintaining articles. One of those rules is WP:Verifiability. This means that sources must be cited and that these sources must be credible, hence, we quote from news organizations, books, magazines and similar entities. Your contributions were not nonsense; that is the reason why it remains in the article. Removing referenced items from an article; now that is WP:Vandalism. There are procedures for handling such matters; hence, the warnings on your user talk page. If you happened to make those edits in good faith, then accept my apologies for interpreting your edits as vandalism; my warnings were in good faith as well. Please remember that my actions were in keeping with the spirit of complying with Wikipedia policy and do not reflect my personal views regarding La Paz, Iloilo City in general, or Batchoy in particular. Thanks for the tips! and you know where I can find antique bolos? =)

Hello Kurt :)

Thanks for the welcome and the tips (e.g., sizing of pics). Appreciate it!

Am a Phil. history enthusiast and I collect antique Phil. swords. I have two tenegres already (bought from the US) plus I have a sanduko coming (i.e., the blade of the Mondo tribe of Capiz). I also have a antique ginunting from Negros, plus a few other old Visayan blades.

Am mentioning this because I plan to write Wikipedia articles on these wonderful Visayan (Ilonggo) blades. Thus I'm wondering whether you know of any museum (aside from Museo Iloilo) that I can visit, where I can get more info, still in line with my plan to write articles about them.

Thanks again, and best wishes,

Lorenz Lasco Email: filhistory@gmail.com Mobile: +63.917.582-1208

PS - Am still feeling my way around here in Wikipedia editing stuff, etc. So please don't hesitate to scream ;) should you wish to point out something about anything.

PPS - Nice articles re Papa Isio, et al. I enjoyed a lot reading Vic Hurley's Swish of the Kris and Jungle Patrol, where I've come to know Papa Isio. Indeed there's a lot of history still to be written about the other Phil. heroes and characters of old.

--Filhistorydotcom (talk) 11:31, 21 September 2009 (UTC)

Hello Lorenz, I'm not sure if the Negros Museum in Bacolod has any collections that include antique bolos, I haven't been there in ages and the last time I was there I don't recall seeing old native blades. But they may have some new items in there; it's been so long since I've been there. I recall attending an exhibit of WWII artifacts in SM Bacolod a while back and there were a few bolos there, but I'm sure they were of WWII vintage only and therefore quite modern.
If you have any questions about how to go about things in Wikipedia, just post here in my talk page, I'll be glad to help you out. You're right, there's still a lot of stuff buried in our history that need to come out. Happy editing and cheers! — KvЯt GviЯnЭlБ Speak! 11:40, 21 September 2009 (UTC)

Ciudad de Bacólod

I have noticed that you deleted the additional names of Bacolod City that I added lately. You said that Spanish is archaic (describes a word or phrase that is no longer in general use but is still encountered in older literature and still sometimes used for special effect) in Bacolod. By the way, did you know that Spanish lost its status as an official language of the Philippines only in 1973 but continued to be taught as a compulsory subject in our schools way up until 1987 when it was abolished by the constitution? Did you know that at present, the Philippine constitution provides that Spanish shall be promoted on a voluntary and optional basis since Spanish is recognized as an auxiliary language together with Arabic? Did you know that Spanish in the Philippines is being revived/reinstated today by making it a compulsory subject in school? Go ask Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo about it and blame her for that if you hate the Spanish language (specifically the Castilian Spanish).

Now, back in "Spanish being archaic in Bacolod". Did you know that as of school year 2006, Riverside College of Bacolod City, offered Spanish as one of the compulsory subjects of 3rd year nursing students and they must pass Spanish 1 & 2 prior to being promoted to 4th year? Did you also know that Spanish is also being offered in La Consolación College-Bacolod as one of the foreign languages that tourism students are studying now? How archaic is the native "Dakbanwa sang Bacolod" with the Spanish counterpart? Honestly, do you really use "dakbanwa" at all instead of "ciudad" (Spanish orthography) or "siyudad" (Tagalog/Filipino orthography) in your day-to-day conversation? Come on! In my own opinion, the word "ciudad" is what the majority of Bacoleños or Bacolodnons use, not the "dakbanwa" which we only hear in TV Patrol Bacolod news and Bombo Radyo. Let me point out to you that "ciudad" is now as native as "dakbanwa" to the Ilongo/Hiligaynon language even if it is a Spanish loanword since we have been using that word as our own for hundreds of years now. That is also what exactly Castilian Spanish language is, a borrowing of words of other languages. Did you know that Castilian Spanish has many loanwords from Arabic language?

How can "Ciudad de Bacólod" be that "archaic" when your grandparents and parents used it just decades ago? How can it be archaic when most or if not all Bacoleños or Bacolodnons, young and old alike, still understand it and use it in Spanish class today (younger generations)? Wake up, it's a living phrase that literally breaths in Bacolod! I just would like to point out that the phrase "Ciudad de Bacólod" is as equally important to be added because it has a historical and cultural significance to us as citizens of Bacolod. I believe that you have no right to revert what I just added to the article. Try to take a look at the Wikipedia entry of "Iloilo City" and you can see rightaway that the native name of its city is "Ciudad sang Iloilo". You should also try "Cebu City". You'll be amazed that the native names of Cebu City are "Ciudad de Cebú" and "Dakbayan sa Sugbo". Why did you change "Dakbanwa sang Bakolod" to "Dakbanwa sang Bacolod"? The native word is "bakolod" based on the Bacolod City article in Wikipedia, right? You must have followed the Tagalog/Filipino orthography in writing the native name then. Whether you like it or not, we Ilongo/Hiligaynon-speaking people as of today are still free to spell the written language with whatever orthography we prefer, may it be based on Spanish orthography or the latest trend which is the Tagalog orthography. Do you know why we are still free to do so? Because there is still no governing body/agency for the spoken and written language of Ilongo/Hiligaynon that would regulate it and would give importance to it. The spelling, grammar, etc. must have been standardized just like any other major languages and must have been taught at the respective schools of Ilongo/Hiligaynon-speaking people.

You must have a personal bias with the Spanish language for deleting the things that I have added. You must have unresolved and unfounded historical hang-ups to do that. Remember this, Hiligaynon/Ilongo is nothing but a partially naked language without Spanish words.

Hello, I took the time to read your long post and it seems you have a lot of disagreements regarding the edits I made on the Bacolod City article. I assure you that as a native Negrense who works in Bacolod City, I am aware of all the situations you raised regarding the status of Spanish in the present lives of Negrense society. After all, I am of Spanish ancestry, despite your statement that I "have a personal bias with the Spanish language" and that I have "unresolved and unfounded historical hang-ups". I assure I do not. My reason for doing so is in keeping with the spirit of Wikipedia as an Encyclopedia. An encyclopedia should present recent information. The infobox in an article presents in concise format, relevant updated information about the subject of the article. Your inclusions of the old names of the city in Spanish may be included in the "History" section of the article; but I deem it unnecessary to place it in the infobox. As for your other concerns, I spelled the city's name "Bacolod", since in no official public document of recent times have I seen Bacolod spelled as "Bakolod"; historically maybe, yes, but again in keeping with the spirit of an updated encyclopedia, maybe you can include that in the "History" section. There is really no need to be riled up about a certain edit made by a fellow Wikipedian. These disagreements may be all be resolved through civil discussion and consensus.
Please read WP:No personal attacks and WP:Be civil. Cheers! — KvЯt GviЯnЭlБ Speak! 02:04, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

Hola, Hello, Ut Vale, Kumusta

I just wanted to say Hello, and BELATED HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! I am a fellow Filipino. I speak Spanish like my aunt in Bacolod and Ilonggo as well (I'm from Capiz). I've been there many times. From the previous section, apparantly I'm not the only one who is enthusiastic about Spanish. I am also interested in Latin and notice the sign on your user page, Ecce Lux Behold, the Light! Are you in to Latin? (my user page is messy btw)--Jondel (talk) 04:48, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

Hello Jondel, yes, I'm acquainted with your contributions here in Wikipedia. The Ecce Lux you are referring to is a self-given service award for at least 2 years of Wikipedia service and 8000 contributions, see this. You may award yourself a similar badge or ribbon. I am occasionally interested in Latin, as my employers like to throw Latin phrases around. =] Cheers! — KvЯt GviЯnЭlБ Speak! 05:05, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
Wow. Ubi laboras? Cur latine sciunt? Where do you work? How come they know latin?--Jondel (talk) 05:15, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
I'm a college teacher at Colegio San Agustin - Bacolod ( see my user page) and my employers are Catholic priests of the Order of St. Augustine, so you can imagine that Latin rains down during speeches. =] — KvЯt GviЯnЭlБ Speak! 05:38, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
Yes I went back to look at your user page and saw where you work. I work with computers and worked as a programmer for more than a decade. Now I do help desk but in Spanish and Japanese (I can do it in Latin too ). I think I should get some units in Education. I want to teach languages. My parents were teachers in De La Salle University.Carpe diem. Salve.--Jondel (talk) 05:45, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
I worked as a free-lance programmer right after I graduated from college in 1992, did it for a few years and then settled down as a teacher. I got tired of dreaming about algorithms and nightmares about bugs not found. Yes, take 18 units of supplemental education, then take the teachers' board exams (which is scheduled today incidentally, I wonder if it pushed through coz of Ondoy...?), when you pass, you'll be a licensed teacher. Take Secondary education with Business technology as your major, that's the path for us CS or IT undergrads. If your parents were teachers, maybe its in your genes too. Gratias. =] — KvЯt GviЯnЭlБ Speak! 07:08, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
I took up ECE, Now I do in vulcanizing :) . I will look into Ed. Perhaps it in my genes.hmm--Jondel (talk) 07:32, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

Hi, many thanks for your work on this article - I was unwilling to spend much time on improving it in view of the copyvio problems and deletion a few months ago. It's only now that my anger has dissipated! Thanks again.PeterWD (talk) 16:16, 6 October 2009 (UTC)
