Welcome
[edit]Welcome to Wikipedia! If you go to my user page, you'll find a link to the tutorial on how to edit Wikipedia. Go ahead and try out the tutorial. TeriEmbrey (talk) 16:12, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
- Great! You've found the tutorial! When you're done, why don't you edit your talkpage with a few sentences about yourself.
Some of the other project participants may leave you talk messages to welcome you as well. TeriEmbrey (talk) 16:41, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you! I am excited to get started. Sorry it has taken so long. My computer keeps logging me out so I keep waiting/ switching computers to try and escape the reboots. I will get to editing my talk page! Thank you again TeriEmbrey! Kbeer1 (talk) 17:51, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
- Hello again, TeriEmbrey. I added a section to my talk page with a little introduction about myself. It's towards the bottom of the talk page if that is okay. Is there anything else I should do to get started? Kbeer1 (talk) 18:07, 10 September 2014 (UTC)

Introduction
[edit]Hi everyone, I'm Kbeer1. I am a Chicago resident, but I am originally from the South (Georgia/West Virginia hybrid). I am an Anthropology and Library and Information Science Master's student at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. In my free time I read, practice bass, and sew. I am hoping to contribute as much as possible to this project, especially in terms of comics and their intersection with the United States military.
GLAM page
[edit]You are doing great. When you've finished the tutorials, pick a historian or other topic off the GLAM page. You can use the Anthony Beevor page and talk page as a template. for viaf numbers, see: viaf.org
Good luck! TeriEmbrey (talk) 18:14, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you TeriEmbrey! Kbeer1 (talk) 18:18, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
Hi TeriEmbrey! I am finishing up for the day so though I think I could add a bit more to the page I was working on (Charles Lipson) I made sure to tie up the loose ends. I was a little hung up on some formatting for a moment, but I think I have it down now! Hopefully I am on the right track and I will see you next week! Kbeer1 (talk) 20:50, 10 September 2014 (UTC)

[edit]Hello, I'm . An edit you recently made to Charles Lipson seemed to be a test and has been removed. If you want more practice editing, the sandbox is the best place to do so. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks. Jeffrd10 (talk) 20:12, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you so much Jeffrd10. It is my first day editing and one of my tables was a bit sloppy. It was not so much a test as it was fixing formatting. I managed to fix it. Thank you for the heads up and please have a wonderful day. Kbeer1 (talk) 20:19, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
Welcome!
[edit]Hey Kbeer-- welcome to the crazy and wonderful place that is the English Wikipedia. I'm Jethro, a fellow volunteer at the Pritzker and mentor to the Wikipedians in Residence there. I was reading over your interest in comics (perhaps war comics?) and their intersection with U.S. military history-- really interesting direction to go that we haven't really touched on yet at the PMML! Also, nice article on Charles Lipson so far. One thing I'd recommend looking into is transitioning away from using external links [in brackets] and trying to use citations to source specific information in the article. If you're able to get started on that on your own, that's great, but if not, I can walk you through that when I come in next week. Feel free to ask me any questions on my talk page if you need help with anything! I, JethroBT drop me a line 19:26, 11 September 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you for your input I JethroBT! I think I may be able to figure out the inline citation part out today (I hope!), but if not I will let you know. Sometimes things seem a little bit easier than they are! I am very interested in pursuing the topic of war comics, specifically the more obscure ones with shorter run times than say Captain America. Thank you again! Kbeer1 (talk) 15:48, 17 September 2014 (UTC)Kbeer1
- Hello again I JethroBT! I think I fixed the citation issues on the Charles Lipson page. If you would like to take a look I didn't delete the [citation] brackets just in case I did it wrong and so you could see where you originally marked it when rechecking. (if you want to recheck it!) I think I cited the websites accurately or at least went with a consistent format when doing so. Thanks again for your help! I hope I did it right! Kbeer1 (talk) 17:57, 17 September 2014 (UTC)Kbeer1
- Sure thing, I'll take a look. Unfortunately, I'm feeling sick today and won't be able to come to the Pritzker today. Also, if you want to notify me, you can use this to get my attention to your talk page here:

- OK, so having looked at the page, here are a couple of comments:
- Your referencing style is fine for the time being, but I'd encourage you to check out the ref toolbar and its templates to fill in source information (check out the thumbnail on the right). This avoids a lot of the coding nonsense you have to do when putting in references. Not all of the fields are strictly necessary, but you'll want to get the important ones like name (if there is one), URL, article title, date of publication, access date for websites, and ISBNs for books.
- This next point is a little more complicated. The current sources on Charles Lipson are troublesome because they are all self-published sources or they are not really independent from him (i.e. they are published by organizations he is associated with). This is problematic because there is no editorial or fact-checking mechanism involved with any of these sources, so they're not reliable and we need to be careful how they are used to support claims. As a rule, we can't use CVs, personal websites, and non-independent sources to make claims about most biographical details (It's OK to use the UChicago website to note his current position there, for instance, but not to support a claim describing the nature of his publications or his professional reputation.) This is also problematic because as it stands right now, the article could be deleted because there are no independent, reliable sources that discuss Lipson or his work in detail. When it comes to his work, we are looking for sources like this one or this one, even if it's not a large amount of material. We can add these ones, but we'll need to add some more independent sources for Lipson's article as your next steps-- Google Books / News / Scholar can be good places to start. Also, like I said above, these concepts is complicated, so don't feel like you should have known all this already. You're doing a fantastic job. I, JethroBT drop me a line 19:53, 17 September 2014 (UTC)
- OK, so having looked at the page, here are a couple of comments:
- Thank you! So sorry. I seriously can't believe I didn't notice that before. I should know better. Thank you again and I will look for more credible sources. I am so used to just having my head in books and academic journals that I think I forgot to question my sources after awhile! So dumb. Thanks again and I will try to clean everything up or delete everything before I leave today.
Sept. 24th details
[edit]Hi TeriEmbrey! I warmed up by creating a listing for a WWI song from the GLAM page list ("Oui, Oui, Marie"). I am moving on to a comic now. The Cord A. Scott book mentions quite a few so I am going to try and work on some that we have here in Special Collections. Is it okay to go into Special Collections or do I need assistance? Thank you! Kbeer1 (talk) 16:32, 24 September 2014 (UTC)kbeer1
- Whoever is at the desk will be happy to pull what you need any time you are here? Thanks for creating the"Oui, Oui, Marie" article! TeriEmbrey (talk) 14:24, 25 September 2014 (UTC)

Incomplete DYK nomination
[edit]Hello! Your submission of Template:Did you know nominations/Shackleton: Antarctic Odyssey at the Did You Know nominations page is not complete; see step 3 of the nomination procedure. If you do not want to continue with the nomination, tag the nomination page with {{db-g7}}, or ask a DYK admin. Thank you. DYKHousekeepingBot (talk) 19:49, 16 October 2014 (UTC)
Welcome to DYK!
[edit]You say on your nomination: "I still have to review another nomination and will post this here once it's done." I thought I should mention that, according to the rules, "New nominators (those with fewer than five DYK credits) are exempt from this review requirement". If you want to do a review that's great, and I certainly don't want to discourage you from doing so, but you are exempt from the requirement. MANdARAX • XAЯAbИAM 19:57, 22 October 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you so much XAЯAbИAM! I have been reading over the process for quite awhile today so I may give it a try once I feel comfortable. Thank you again for letting me know! Kbeer1 (talk) 20:27, 22 October 2014 (UTC)Kbeer1
DYK nomination of Shackleton: Antarctic Odyssey
[edit]Hello! Your submission of Shackleton: Antarctic Odyssey at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and some issues with it may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! DocTree (ʞlɐʇ·ʇuoɔ) WER 18:07, 14 November 2014 (UTC)
- Resolved - Your DYK was moved to the prep area. Anticipate it moving to the main page on 18-19 November if you want to grab a screen capture. Watch the prep area, though, because it could appear a bit earlier or delayed and appear later if something goes wrong with hooks in front of yours. Take care, DocTree (ʞlɐʇ·ʇuoɔ) WER 22:11, 16 November 2014 (UTC)
DYK for Shackleton: Antarctic Odyssey
[edit]On 19 November 2014, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Shackleton: Antarctic Odyssey, which you recently created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that Shackleton: Antarctic Odyssey was published just before the 100th anniversary of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1914 on which it was based? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Shackleton: Antarctic Odyssey. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, live views, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page. |
