People notable for only one event

[edit]

We are here to help you I see that some biographical articles you made are being discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion (WP:AFD). Can I introduce you to the concept of people notable only for one event. Have a look at WP:BLP1E and WP:SINGLEEVENT. If you want to write a biography of someone, try to make it clear in the article that they are notable for more than just one event. If they are only notable for one event, then the article needs to make it clear that the event they were notable for was a big thing, and that they took a big part in that event - this is explained at WP:BLP1E.-- Toddy1 (talk) 11:59, 8 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Toddy1, I'm really not a big supporter of the WP:BLP1E and WP:SINGLEEVENT sections. They really only seem to used as a "Plan B" for when articles can't be deleted due to notability and they really seem to only exist to be a counter for notability. I think most articles on the site could be deleted through those two rules if applied correctly. I really don't see how for example Kingsley Jonathan is famous for more than one event or for more than one thing nor do I see why it's more important than having the world's largest collection of pepsi cans with Christian Cavaletti. Kingsley's done nothing but play football and Christian has done nothing but collect cans. Seems the same to me when it's put that way. You could make the case that Kingsley was good in college too so it's more than one event, but I would counter with Christian also having the record nationally and internationally. I've also seen people try to say, "he still plays football, so it's continuous", but I would argue that Christian is still collecting and still having to keep up his record, so it's also continuous. I ultimately believe the argument would come down to, "I like football more" and "The media likes football more", which aren't real good arguments. That vote is probably best had at the village pump, however, since those users let the issue occur in the first place, I don't really trust their judgment or expect any change. I also don't really trust the users not to just say, "you're trolling" and end it there.
And thanks for your other piece of advice.KatoKungLee (talk) 16:30, 8 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I think that AFD will decide that the article on Douglas and Mary Beth Meyer should be deleted. Unlike many of the articles that go to AFD, your article on Douglas and Mary Beth Meyer is well written, well researched and cites the sources used for it. If it gets deleted, I want the text added to the article on grapefruit as a new section.
Please could you improve completion of the citation templates for the article on Douglas and Mary Beth Meyer. The citation template has the following fields, and it would be really helpful if you completed them for each citation:
  • work = name of publication - use a wikilink if the publication has an article on it
  • first1 = first name of the author. Note, if there are many authors, you can have first2, first3, etc.
  • last1 = last name of the author
  • date= date the article was published
Remember, your efforts will not be wasted. If the article is deleted, we will still need this stuff if the content is added to the article on grapefruit.-- Toddy1 (talk) 22:53, 8 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Sofia Mazagatos

[edit]

We are here to help you Thank you for expanding the article on Sofia Mazagatos. I have tried to improve the completion of citation templates and the infobox.[1] -- Toddy1 (talk) 09:42, 12 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Please could you do an article on Paraíso (2000 TV series). There is a Spanish-language Wikipedia article on this series at es:Paraíso (serie de televisión del 2000). This was the series where Sofia Mazagatos appeared as "Emma". Do you speak Spanish?-- Toddy1 (talk) 10:04, 12 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hey Toddy1, I'm up for doing it as long as I can find the sources. From what I saw on the disambiguation page, there's a few series named that and since it's from 2000, I'm a little worried about being able to find sources where that program is the main subject. I would say I'm above basic in Spanish, but that's about it. I'll take a look and see what I can find. Thanks buddy.KatoKungLee (talk) 22:17, 12 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Jackie Miley

[edit]

Citations need completing better I saw your article on Jackie Miley. A problem it has is that you do not fill the citation templates sufficiently. This obscures the subject's notability. You have citations from CBS News, The Times of India, The Hindustan Times, etc. but the citations only have the article title. They do not mention the newspaper/work, the date of publication, or the article authors. But omitting these details you are shooting yourself in the foot.-- Toddy1 (talk) 15:28, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I'll work on it.KatoKungLee (talk) 16:31, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion

[edit]
KatoKungLee, my advice is to go through the citations on articles that you have created and add missing data to the citation templates - here is an example. At least it makes it easier to see what the citations really are. Note that it is worth searching Wikipedia to see if there is an article on the newspaper, etc. that you are citing. If there is, wikilink it. But it is up to you.-- Toddy1 (talk) 11:34, 22 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Toddy1Hey T, I fixed up the templates. I think they may be eligible automatically due to being in the 1935 Tschammerpokal, but I'll have to check.KatoKungLee (talk) 13:21, 22 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Leamon Hall

[edit]

Nice work with Leamon Hall. I corrected a few minor issues, but it was mostly good. BTW, consider when citing Newspapers.com to use clippings (for example [2]) rather than plain matches on a page (like [3]) - that way the reader can view the article without having to pay for a subscription. Also, remember to put at the bottom of a biography, one spot above the categories, something saying {{DEFAULTSORT:LAST NAME, FIRST NAME}} - to be honest I'm unsure of what its for, but I believe its supposed to be on all bios. Thanks, BeanieFan11 (talk) 20:03, 22 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Bean - I will have to read up on how to do that. I'm not even sure how I'm able to use the newspapers site to be honest, since I didn't register. I also have no idea what exactly default sort is for lolKatoKungLee (talk) 20:21, 22 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
See Template:DEFAULTSORT. It helps for sorting names in categories.
As for Newspapers, those who meet the eligibility requirements (which you do) can head over to the Wikipedia Library and login with their Wikipedia account. You'll then be able to access a number of valuable sources and databases that you might not normally be able to. Once logged in, it should appear in your library. Vector 2022 language switcher location

In the new look, the language switcher has moved to the upper corner, instead of the lower sidebar. I'm not involved in that work myself, but I believe it's proven to be a more visible, and therefore more used, feature in the new arrangement. It took me a long time to get used to the new location, though. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 00:42, 23 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Mortal Kombat characters

[edit]

Hey, you were asking why so many Mortal Kombat characters have been at AFD lately at the Kabal AFD. Well, what happened was a chain reaction of an editor nominating Skarlet for a merge. From there, several other MK character went to AFD, with most resulting in a merge and only a few resulting in keep. I don't agree with all the merging myself. I try to come up with the best arguments for keeping the articles when I can.

What you should do is provide reliable sources that discuss the characters at AFD (and make sure they aren't mere passing mentions), as these tends to help your arguments. MoonJet (talk) 02:38, 26 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

MoonJet - Thanks for the heads up. It's a very weird thing to me for three reasons. Basically every male in the English speaking world over 15 probably knows all of these characters so it's obviously notable. The other thing is that unlike a basketball player or something, you can't interview Baraka. Whatever Mortal Kombat says is his background is his background. There's not a lot of room for commentary, questioning or other things that produce content. It's like here's Baraka, here's what he does and that's it. We also can't post screenshots from the game or copy and paste his bio because that might be copyright infringement or use primary sources.. I feel a larger discussion needs to take place at Village Pump or elsewhere because there's not going to be much stopping the same people from going after Street Fighter, Tekken or other characters soon after.KatoKungLee (talk) 02:49, 26 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, I'm not so sure if a wider discussion is the best approach, unless maybe things get too problematic. But for now, most likely, nothing would be resolved from it. I see you tried starting one at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Video games though. MoonJet (talk) 03:44, 26 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
MoonJet - If only I had seen your post a few minutes earlier....nice call on that one LOL Can I get a re-do on that? Great username by the way, love it. Way cooler than mine.KatoKungLee (talk) 05:12, 26 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

If you find a dead link, open up web.archive.org and paste the url of the dead link in the box displayed there. If the page has been archived, it will show you a selection of dates it has been archived on. It is usually best to choose the earliest.

In the citation template there are fields for archive URLs, and this is how to complete them:

|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220123180512/https://www.abendblatt.de/archiv/1949/article200272417/Tischtennis-Meisterschaft.html
|archive-date=23 January 2022
|url-status=dead

If you complete the citation template correctly, this produces:

"Tischtennis Meisterschaft". Hamburger Abendblatt (in German). 7 February 1949. Archived from the original on 23 January 2022.

Clicking on the title takes you to the archive-url, and clicking on "the original" takes you to the original url.

Note that with newspaper articles, we want the date of the article, not the year.

Archive URLs with links that still work

Sometimes it is useful to add an archive URL even though the URL still works. In that case fill in the |url-status=live This produces:

"Tischtennis Meisterschaft". Hamburger Abendblatt (in German). 7 February 1949. Archived from the original on 23 January 2022.

You see the difference? Clicking on the title takes you to the original URL, and clicking on "archived" takes you to the archive-url.

Archive URLs with links lead to a different article than they did when cited

Sometimes a URL works, but leads to a different article than it did when cited. In that case use |url-status=usurped This produces:

"Tischtennis Meisterschaft". Hamburger Abendblatt (in German). 7 February 1949. Archived from the original on 23 January 2022.{{cite news}}: CS1 maint: unfit URL (link)

Clicking on the title takes you to the archive-url.

This situation happens when people give the URL for the front page of a news site instead of the URL for the article; often the right thing to do is to use the archived version of the front page to find the URL of the article and then change the URL to the article URL as well as providing an archive URL. -- Toddy1 (talk) 11:32, 26 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@ Toddy1 - Thanks Toddy, I already put that into use. Very helpful!

Hi KatoKungLee, I see that you are using the newspapers.com website via WP:LIBRARY. One small problem is that links to http://www-newspapers-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org only bring the viewer to the article if they are logged in to WP, have 500 edits and meet other criteria. It is better to create an account over at newspapers.com, clip the article and then rewrite the URL of the clipped article to use https://www.newspapers.com. Then, that link will work for non-logged in users. I have some notes about how to do this at User:Cxbrx#Newspapers.com_links. I was just looking at an AFD where you commented I think the coverage is enough to warrant this staying. This kind of comment doesn't help an admin or NAC closing a discussion. Please try to be more specific...which sources do you believe provide SIGCOV? Have you looked for additional sources yourself? What did you find that might help Keep an article? Please mention them in the AFD discussion.

Please avoid making generic comments where it isn't clear if you evaluated the existing sources or the content of the article in any depth. Replaceable non-free use File:Mitsuharu Misawa Photo.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Mitsuharu Misawa Photo.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of non-free use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of non-free use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{Di-replaceable non-free use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable non-free use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file's talk page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification, per the non-free content policy.
