North Carolina hurricane FT
Julian, what is the status of getting List of North Carolina hurricanes (2000–present) to FL and added to the existing featured topic? The retention period ran out on 21 March, and just as I was preparing to nominate the topic for removal I noticed it was you who made the unsuccessful FLC nom, and figured I would check-in with you first. -MBK004 02:28, 1 April 2010 (UTC)
- I'm not sure honestly. It failed due to a lack of comments, and I fear it'll experience a similar issue if I nominate it again. I'll nominate it again to see how it goes. –Juliancolton | Talk 02:30, 1 April 2010 (UTC)
- Good luck, and I doubt as long as the FLC is running the topic will be nominated for removal, and if it is it won't be demoted as long as the candidacy is still open. -MBK004 02:38, 1 April 2010 (UTC)
- Don't worry too much; FLCs that run a second time receive a lot more love than the first time around. Dabomb87 (talk) 02:40, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

Can you help?
This editor[1] appears to have a problem with the Category:Turkish people of Albanian descent being placed on the Mustafa Kemal Atatürk article. Could you drop them a message? I would but after this response on his/her latest edit[2], I don't believe they would listen to me. Thanks. --Kansas Bear (talk) 02:44, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

It's a sad day when you don't bother editing an article while it's on the main page because you get edit conflicts with vandals and editors trying to revert them. Hopefully tomorrow will be quieter. JCbot editing error
In this revision to Alligator Alley from January: "performing general MOS/capitalization/style changes, Replaced: North-South → north–south, East-West → east–west (2), using AWB"[5], JCbot incorrectly modified the filename of the image in the image link from "East-West" to "east–west", and not just the caption. nandhp (talk) 14:52, 3 April 2010 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Effects of Hurricane Floyd in New England
Hello, I just wanted to introduce myself and let you know I am glad to be reviewing the article Effects of Hurricane Floyd in New England you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. –Grondemar 22:52, 5 April 2010 (UTC)
- Question: After reading this article and the parent article Hurricane Floyd, I'm wondering why Effects of Hurricane Floyd in New England is a standalone article. The Background section in Effects is a summary of the meteological history in the main article, the information in the Preparations section could easily be merged into the Preparations section of the main article, and the six paragraphs of the Impact section could be copied over the one paragraph in the main article. I understand summary style, but it would make more sense to me to merge this article back into the main article rather than keeping it as a standalone. I'd like your thoughts on this before I continue my review. Thanks. –Grondemar 04:58, 6 April 2010 (UTC)
- Heyyy, I remember this storm. My dad was nearly smacked by a big falling tree branch when he decided to be stupid and venture outside. :/ Trees were down all over the place. —Ed (talk • majestic titan) 05:04, 6 April 2010 (UTC)
- I remember it too, but I remember mostly the damage in North Carolina and the massive flooding in New Jersey. The storm did impact New England; I just wonder whether the storm's impact in New England really needs a standalone article. PS: The big New England hurricane I'll always remember is Hurricane Gloria back in 1985, which if I remember right had a far bigger impact than Floyd did in New England. –Grondemar 05:22, 6 April 2010 (UTC)
- I'm not sure on the suitability of the article; I'll let JC answer that. I would probably remember Gloria if I had been alive then ;) —Ed (talk • majestic titan) 05:24, 6 April 2010 (UTC)
- My long-term plan is to have sub-articles for all regions (see User:Juliancolton/Floyd), in order to present as much information as possible without making the parent article too long or unwieldy. The multiple sources also establish enough notability to justify splitting up the articles. –Juliancolton | Talk 12:48, 6 April 2010 (UTC)
- OK, looks reasonable. I'll continue reviewing. Thanks. –Grondemar 19:27, 6 April 2010 (UTC)

Sockpuppet suspension: please re-review
Hi. Last year, you were the admin who made the decision to block me from Wikipedia for being a "sockpuppet". This took place last year. Some references: 7 8
Now, it states that I've been blocked "indefinitely." But I was hoping you might hear me out on this. This won't take a whole ton of time.
First of all, as you can see by my contributions of over three years 9, most of the edits I've made are to keep spam out of pages that I was actively monitoring.
The comment that lead to the investigation was on a vote that I was asked to look at. I did and determined it was worthy of a keep vote. I then let a colleague of mine - who works on the same floor as I do for a different company - know and ask for his input as well (not a "keep" vote, mind you, but to look it over and give it an appropriate vote). This is where the Check User then verified that account and mine were running on the same IP. Well, of course we are; we're on the same internet connection because we're on the same floor of a building!
In any case, I can seriously provide documentation that I am not in fact that user; my username is actually a shorted version of my name. The username that is apparently my "sockpuppet account" is a shortened version of his name.
I feel like this decision was made incredibly hastily and without any way for me of responding in any kind of fashion. And it sucks, too, because I was a proponent of Wikipedia and keeping spam out of here.
Anyway, if you could review, that would be great. I promise this won't take too much time for you.--70.99.82.35 (talk) 17:13, 9 April 2010 (UTC)
- I can't answer for JC, but just to let you know it probably won't be looked upon favorably to go about requesting unblock in this way. The avenues you're supposed to go through are listed at this place, but evading a block to request removal of said block is not normally well received. As a personal suggestion, stop editing around the block and follow the procedures listed at the link provided. If you really do have documentation, then you have a fair chance of getting unblocked by those means, but much less of a chance if you continue to go about requesting unblock in this manner. Good luck, Ks0stm If you reply here, please leave me a Talkback message on my talk page. 17:28, 9 April 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for that, Ks0stm. I didn't know that I'm apparently evading a block to request removal of said block...? But I'll use the course of action of which you've noted. Thanks.--70.99.82.35 (talk) 17:41, 9 April 2010 (UTC)
- I'm willing to assume good faith and unblock you, as long as you try to avoid persuading others in real life to partake in discussions you're active in. Is that a fair condition? Regards, –Juliancolton | Talk 19:19, 9 April 2010 (UTC)
- I would email this offer to him, as I think he took the advice I gave before you got here. =P Just my luck one of these offers comes up the time I tell them it's not a good way to request unblock. I'd be happy to. But first I'd suggest you try updating your AWB version; there was an update to mediawiki recently which change the login process, which means that the old versions of most programs cannot log in. If you haven't updated recently, you'll need to to get AWB working again. Also, the update needs to be manual (I believe), you can't use AWB's update program. - Kingpin13 (talk) 11:37, 13 April 2010 (UTC)

Hi. Can you mark this image has approved in the commons at the date given under the license stated by the author? Dr. Blofeld White cat 17:36, 13 April 2010 (UTC)
- Sorry, but I'm not exactly sure what you mean. As far as I know, no approval is necessary. –Juliancolton | Talk 17:47, 13 April 2010 (UTC)
Oh OK. I was thinking, say in about a year's time. What if the person has a cleanout and deletes some of his old Twitter pages and deletes this by accident. At a later date, what would happen if a commons admin came across the image clicked the source and it was dead. Given the delete until proven inocent scenario that exists, do you think it likely that it would be kept then or would they delete it? Could you just given an approved on given date and your signature stamp next to it. I'd feel a lot more secure that way. Dr. Blofeld White cat 17:58, 13 April 2010 (UTC)

Julian,

tiny correction on Stephen Colbert
Hi, Julian,
I'm doing a story for BirdNote about Stephen Colbert's eagle and happened to notice that "critically acclaimed" in the second paragraph is hyphenated and shouldn't be.
Please tweak when you get the chance.

Hi Juliancolton, this GAN review has now reach a point where a pass/not pass decision has to be made. The review is stuck on a rather minor point, are you intending to continue with this nomination? Pyrotec (talk) 19:11, 20 April 2010 (UTC)
- I'm not sure how to proceed, to be honest. The only issue is one which I feel I can't address by myself, so it's your call whether to pass or fail it. For now, I've removed the dollar figure altogether, which seems to be the most acceptable solution. Any thoughts? –Juliancolton | Talk 19:17, 20 April 2010 (UTC)

GAN backlog elimination drive - 1 week to go
First off, on behalf of myself and my co-coordinator Wizardman, I would like to thank you for the efforts that you have made so far in this GAN backlog elimination drive. It has been nothing short of a success, and that is thanks to you. See this Signpost article about what this drive has achieved so far.
We're currently heading into the final week of the drive. At this time, if you have any GANs on review or on hold, you should be finishing off those reviews. Right now, we have more GANs on review or on hold than we do unreviewed. If you're going to start a GA review, please do so now so you can complete it by the end of the month and so that the nominator has a full 7-day window to address any concerns. See you at the finish! |

Simple Wikipedia
While bored and surfing the ToolServer applications, I found, via this application, I was blocked from Simple Wikipedia for "Abusing one or more accounts". I had previously used a couple sockpuppet accounts here on English Wikipedia, which I have long since been forgiven and unblocked of. I am not sure if the block on Simple Wikipedia is related to that or not. I have made no edits to Simple Wikipedia and would like to be unblocked. I can't ask to be unblocked on Simple as my talk page as been blocked as well. The admin who blocked me, User:Creol, seems to have left both Simple Wikipedia and English Wikipedia.
Oddly, none of my previous or current passwords work on the Simple Wikipedia account, so it might be an account that was made to impersonate me also.
Would it be possible to unblock my account on Simple Wikipedia since I have been forgiven of sockpuppetry on English Wikipedia? Thanks...NeutralHomer • Talk • 01:13, 24 April 2010 (UTC)

A Question
Well, I withdrew you from the competition as requested. However, I am still scratching my head as to why you withdrew. Can you tell me? I'm just a bit curious here. Afterall, last year you were in the final round and you did very well.--White Shadows you're breaking up 01:35, 24 April 2010 (UTC)
- Several reasons. I'd like to work in my own time without the concern of making it to the next round, and since I didn't plan on being as involved this year as I was last year, I'd rather give those who wish to participate more actively room to breathe. More importantly, though, my poor sportsmanship exhibited here would make me feel uncomfortable advancing to further rounds. –Juliancolton | Talk 01:39, 24 April 2010 (UTC)
- I'm sorry but I fail to see any "poor sportsmanship" anywhere in that FAC. You were all but kind and courteous. I do however understand your first reason. It is stressing trying to advance to further rounds. Anyway, if you can explain that one bit that would be great. I hope to see you in the competition next year ;)--White Shadows you're breaking up 01:46, 24 April 2010 (UTC)
- The vocabulary I used may have been courteous, but my failure to assume good faith was anything but. It's not worth rehashing however. Best of luck for the rest of the competition and thanks for withdrawing my spot. –Juliancolton | Talk 01:55, 24 April 2010 (UTC)
- I would only have called it poor sportsmanship if you saw that FAC go down and then immediately went off to oppose whatever article(s) Sasata was working on. I really don't think it's that bad. I understand why you regret it though. —Soap— 09:57, 24 April 2010 (UTC)
- Don't mention it. I've lately been beating the judges (or what's left of them) to tasks that are normally assigned to them. Anyway, thanks for the good luck comment. I am still in shock that I have over 500 points and am guaranteed to place second in my pool as well as move on to round three. however, I have a feeling that I'll be eliminated in round three or round four if I can even manage to get there. I'm better at this than I first thought :)--White Shadows you're breaking up 02:01, 24 April 2010 (UTC)
- Just keep at it and you should have as good a chance as anybody. Your editing had definitely improved, at least based upon your comments here, so I see no reason why you can't make it to the last round. Happy Friday :) (goes back to article work) –Juliancolton | Talk 02:10, 24 April 2010 (UTC)

Question on article deletion
Hi there!
I'm very new to Wikipedia and just reading up on all the tutorials and various sections to make sure that I'm getting my head around it all. I've signed up on WP because I'd like to create a couple of articles on a film that we have released recently, which has gotten quite a bit of international coverage, in addition to be being selected for screening at Cannes (hurrah!). I would like to create an article on WP called 'Xero Error (film)', however I've discovered that an article on this previously existed on WP but was deleted due to lack of sources and being in production at the time of writing of the original article.
I just wanted to know what would be the protocol to follow so that I can re-do this article on WP but with complete sources, images/links etc?
Appreciate the help!
Theregos (talk) 09:05, 24 April 2010 (UTC)
- Hey, welcome to Wikipedia! I deleted that article well over a year ago, so there's a pretty good chance that the movie is now covered by sufficient sources to justify reinstating the article. I can even restore the deleted content into your userspace (for example, User:Theregos/Xero Error; that would allow you to work on the article in your own time before moving it to Wikipedia proper. One thing to note is that people are generally discouraged from writing on topics to which they have a conflict of interest, but I can work with you to ensure any such concerns are addressed. Best regards, –Juliancolton | Talk 15:32, 24 April 2010 (UTC)

Fishkill Creek
As you may or may not have noticed I've been slowly expanding this one (There are some opportunities for you to take photos here ... perhaps of some of the other tributaries currently redlinked that are a little closer to you than me (I've taken some shots of dams and such in Beacon as well as the estuary)). I nominated it for DYK, only to have someone reviewing it say it wasn't eligible because (get this) it was still assessed as stub-class on the talk page. I raised it to start, but I was told that it should be reasssesed higher and, obviously, I can't do that myself. Would you do the honors? (A B-class will do nicely, thank you ... although I'm so ticked about this that, if I were a drama queen, I would have asked for you to give it FA-class (Or, actually, done that myself). Daniel Case (talk) 18:52, 26 April 2010 (UTC)
- Yeah, I have actually been watching the article's expansion; it looks great. I'll keep my camera handy and take some good pictures when I get the chance (especially now that the landscape is looking less gray). I reassessed it as B for now, and I think with some additional polishing and a few more pictures it could be a good candidate for GA. In fairness to the DYK reviewer, it is, to my knowledge, a written rule that the article can't be assessed or tagged as Stub-Class, but of course that's trivial to change. –Juliancolton | Talk 19:14, 26 April 2010 (UTC)
