WikiCup 2010 February newsletter

Round one is over, and round two has begun! Congratulations to the 64 contestants who have made it through, but well done and thank you to all contestants who took part in our first round. A special well done goes to Hungary Sasata (submissions), our round one winner (1010 points), and to Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn (submissions) and New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions), who were second and third respectively (640 points/605 points). Sasata was awarded the most points for both good articles (300 points) and featured articles (600 points), and TonyTheTiger was awarded the most for featured topics (225 points), while Hunter Kahn claimed the most for good topics (70). Connecticut Staxringold (submissions) claimed the most featured lists (240 points) and featured pictures (35 points), Geschichte (submissions) claimed the most for Did you know? entries (490 points), Jujutacular (submissions) claimed the most for featured sounds (70 points) and Republic of Ireland Candlewicke (submissions) claimed the most for In the news entries (40 points). No one claimed a featured portal or valued picture.

Credits awarded after the end of round one but before round two may be claimed in round two, but remember the rule that content must have been worked on in some significant way during 2010 by you for you to claim points. The groups for round two will be placed up shortly, and the submissions' pages will be blanked. This round will continue until 28 April, when the top two users from each group, as well as 16 wildcards, will progress to round three. Please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup; thank you to all doing this last round, and particularly to those helping at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, by email or on IRC. Good luck! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Greetings and salutations

Hi Jujutacular, I came across your page seeking for an answer, as I was seeking for another answer. Both unanswered so far. I was expecting an answer from Okip, so I went to his page. There I saw a posting from Coffee, which surprised me as being associated with coffee as I am. Thus I went to his page and was very impressed with his curriculum and graphics. I asked him a question, but did not get an answer. Looking for this answer, I found your name and page, which are equally impressive. I will ask you to please help me with two questions: 1) how can I improve my signature, from the plain ordinary Arial blue to a bold italic Verdana burgundy? And 2) how can I see (or find) my edit counter (what you call edit stats)? I await your response. Kindest regards, --Grancafé (talk) 18:12, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

You can change your signature by going to "my preferences" - one of the links at the upper right corner of you screen. From there, enter in the code that you would like to be your signature where it says "Signature:". To create a custom signature, I would suggest looking at the code used by other editors. You can see the code they used to generate their signature by looking at source code for any talk page they write on. Font can be changed by using the code:
<font style="color:#800000;" face=Verdana>This is a maroon Verdana font</font>

produces this: This is a maroon Verdana font

For a full list of colors available, see Web colors. When editing your signature, you should make sure that it falls within the guidelines located at WP:SIGNATURE. As for the edit counter, the one linked on my userpage is this one. Simply type in your username in the box, and you'll get a lot of information. A simple edit counter is also located in your preferences. Hope this helps :) Jujutacular T · C 18:51, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
Thank you very much for your prompt response and explanations. I am going to try and experiment. I am cyber-phobic and rather be safe than sorry. Nevertheless, it seems that it should not be too complicated. I am going to give it a try. You have an awesome page. Maybe someday I will improve mine. For now it is plain and simple, just to the point. Again, thanks a lot, --Grancafé (talk) 19:36, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

The signature change did not work

Hello Jujutacular, I tried to change my signature and it did not work. I copied your instructions, practiced and practiced and practiced, until I got it right. Very exciting! Then I went to my preferences tab, and in the signature box Iinserted this:

Grancafé (parley)

And got this: Invalid raw signature. Check HTML tags.

I need further instructions. The first part worked fine; the second part failed. Please advice. Thanks, --Grancafé (talk) 00:25, 2 March 2010 (UTC)

Sorry about that, try the following code:
<span style="color:#800000; font-family:Verdana">Grancafé</span> (<span style="color:#800000; font-family:Verdana">parley</span>)

Which produces: Grancafé (parley)

The problem was the "font" tags which are deprecated. My mistake. Jujutacular T · C 02:40, 2 March 2010 (UTC)
It worked! Thanks, --Grancafé (parley) 12:17, 2 March 2010 (UTC)
Hi Jujutacular, thank you for following up on our initial conversation. I did experiment on my practice page using bold letters, but it turns out to be a little extravagant. Thus, after further experimenting I decided to keep this last version (for now). But I would like to make the "parley" one point smaller and hopefully towards the top of the line like you have your T.C). I hope I am explaining my self that you may understand what I would like. If it is not to troublesome and complicated, please advice, otherwise forget it. I am happy the way it is. It is quite an improvement from the old, boring, plain blue arial that I had before. Thank you very much for your wonderful and prompt help. Best, --Grancafé . parley 00:52, 3 March 2010 (UTC)
I believe you're referring to superscript. Example: This is superscript text produces: This is superscript text. Jujutacular T · C 00:58, 3 March 2010 (UTC)
Yes, that's it! How do I do that? --Grancafé . parley 01:01, 3 March 2010 (UTC)
One last request. If you are going to help me get this done, waht about changing the color of "parley" from burgundy to dark coffee? I hope this is not to much to ask. Thanks, --Grancafé . parley 01:04, 3 March 2010 (UTC)
I have tried over and over again, but I can't get it. To complicated for a coffeeologist. This is what I was able to do, but it is not working. Grancafé parley. Please give me some further advice. It seems too complicated and difficult It would be preferable if you could just give me the formula to indert in the my preference box. If you have the patience and time, please help. Otherwise forget it. I am happy whit what I have. Thanks, --Grancafé . parley 02:00, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

Do you see wahat I mean? Do you undesrtand why is it that I am cyber-phobic? This is why! --Grancafé . parley 02:03, 3 March 2010 (UTC)
Why did the sizes change as well? This is a mess! Please help! --Grancafé . parley 02:05, 3 March 2010 (UTC)
The problem was you didn't use the closing "" tag. If I understand correctly this is what you want:
<span style="color:#800000; font-family:Verdana">Grancafé</span> <span style="color:#800000; font-family:Verdana">parley</span>
Which produces: Grancafé parley
Jujutacular T · C 05:13, 3 March 2010 (UTC)
Dear Jujutacular, thank you very much for your help, patience and effort. I tried agan, an it did not work.
I entered in my preferences: Grancafé *parley and I got an error message: Invalid raw signature. Check HTML tags. This is exactly what you told me to do, removing the
<pre>
tags and adding an (*) before the User talk:Grancafe.
I do like the look of this: Grancafé parley
Thanks again. Kindly please advice one more time. Best
Copy exactly what is in the box below and paste it into your preferences:
<span style="color:#800000; font-family:Verdana">Grancafé</span> *<span style="color:#800000; font-family:Verdana">parley</span>
Don't look at the source code of this page. I did it myself and got the correct results. Jujutacular T · C 00:14, 4 March 2010 (UTC)
I did exactly what you told me to do, and it worked! Thank you very much. Sorry for all the trouble. Best, --Grancafé *parley 03:34, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

The edit counter did work

Awesome! The edit counter instructions worked out perfectly. Thank you so much!, Best, --Grancafé (talk) 00:35, 2 March 2010 (UTC)

The Guidance Barnstar
Hi Jujutacular, this barnstar is for your tireless efforts in helping, orienting and encouraging newcomers and novice editors, like me. Thank you very much, --Grancafé *parley 03:40, 4 March 2010 (UTC)
Thank you! I'm happy to help! Let me know if you ever have any more questions. Jujutacular T · C 04:03, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

Hi Jujutacular, I uploaded a new version of File:Desargues theorem alt.svg. I was considering closing the FPC nomination when I noticed that the label at the B intersection was running into a line, and that the red dots were not as easily visible as in the original version. I hope you don't mind, I made those two changes instead of closing the nomination. I didn't increase the size of the dots very much as I thought they were a little large in the original anyway. Hope you're okay with this! If not, feel free to revert back to your version. Thanks, Maedin\talk 18:15, 9 March 2010 (UTC)

Not a problem at all, definitely an improvement. It looked a bit different in Illustrator, where I made it, than when it was rendered here - so I must have missed that. Thanks for doing that. Jujutacular T · C 19:13, 9 March 2010 (UTC)
Thank you for making the alt to start with, you put a lot of work into it and improved it a lot!  :) Maedin\talk 19:28, 9 March 2010 (UTC)

convert to .svg?

Hi, I understand from one of your above comments that you have Adobe Illustrator? I have a piece of music I've transcribed and which I'd like to save as an .svg, but the program I created the music in will only let me export to Illustrator, Corel Draw, or the usual range of .bmp, .tiff, .png options. Would you be willing to do me a huge favour and convert the .eps to .svg? Maedin\talk 21:25, 15 March 2010 (UTC)

Congrats on the long-awaited promotion. One more thing: there's a bit of a disagreement over the lead at Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/List of United States Military Academy alumni (Union Army)/archive1; since you reviewed the list, would you mind commenting on it (see Bencherlite's first comment)? By historical, I mean that it will not be needing updating, as the Civil War is long over. Again, still the only historical featured alumni list I'm seeing is List of United States Military Academy alumni (Confederate States Army). I'm extremely sad to see you do this. I can tell that you put a lot of good work into the list, and I thank you for it. Don't let this get you down, please! I've seen you around a lot, and I've admired your work. • As an experienced FLC guy, I am wondering if you could give me some help. In my FLC, a user said that I should change a frequently used reference into "a general ref so you only need to specify author and page number(s) each re-use." WikiCup 2010 March newsletter

We're half way through round two, and everything is running smoothly. Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn (submissions) leads overall with 650 points this round, and heads pool B. New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions) currently leads pool C, dubbed the "Group of Death", which has a only a single contestant yet to score this round (the fewest of any group), as well five contestants over 100 points (the most). With a month still to go, as well as 16 wildcard places, everything is still to play for. Anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Although unrelated to the WikiCup, April sees a Good Article Nominations backlog elimination drive, formulated as a friendly competition with small awards, as the Cup is. Several WikiCup contestants and judges have already signed up, but regular reviewers and those who hope to do more reviewing are more than welcome to join at the drive page. Thanks for the !vote.

I enjoyed your audio gallery on commons. I can play rhythm guitar but not classical. I do have a nice '73 Giannini that was passed along to me, but I mainly use that for Pedro the Lion songs since I'm not good at fingerpicking. You might enjoy this video. Keegan (talk) 05:49, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

Awesome! I don't play too much modern music except for basic rhythm guitar. And I only own a nylon-stringed guitar, which isn't the best if want to cover songs. Oh and one thing - you realized I was in the oppose section, right? ;-) Jujutacular T · C 06:06, 1 April 2010 (UTC)
We get once a year to have fun on Wikipedia. Your oppose was both appropriate and funny. Keegan (talk) 07:53, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

You have recently participated in discussion at an AFD for a broadcast station. I have recently posted the above topic on the talk page of the notability guideline for organizations and companies, to see if there is interest in adding language related to the notability of radio and TV broadcast stations to that guideline. Your input would be most welcome. Thanks. Edison (talk) 01:40, 9 April 2010 (UTC)

Illinois edits

No, no Thank you. This is an article that I always kinda/sorta meant to clean up one day and you doing the bulk of the work with me adding some cleanup after the fact worked out nicely (as it's now GA.) Good job, yourself. —Justin (koavf)TCM22:10, 11 April 2010 (UTC)

FA If you are trying to bring this article to FA status, I can give you some help. I'm probably more helpful on the formatting/proofreading/categorizing/maintenance end, but I might be able to scrounge up some prose and sources of my own. I'm somewhat knowledgeable and interested, but I can already tell that you are clearly more passionate about this than me, so you would remain the primary contributor. Just something to consider; post on my talk if you think that I can be of assistance. —Justin (koavf)TCM20:58, 14 April 2010 (UTC)
Sources The only things that immediately come to mind are checking Metacritic and allgoodnaysayers(dot)net (you could even e-mail the latter, of course.) In the meantime, I'll keep on doing my thing and check in on it in a couple of days. —Justin (koavf)TCM21:10, 14 April 2010 (UTC)

Expansion As you've certainly seen, I've edited this article substantially today. I figured I would give you the heads-up about a few items. First off, if you want more sources (specifically reviews), see here: http://allgoodnaysayers.net/music/albums/illinois/ . If you want to know what I have in mind for expanding the article, take a look at ETHWHT; this is the only other album article where I've really put forth an effort and that is probably a model of what I think would be an optimal album article (e.g. a longer reception section, the inclusion of at least one audio sample, etc.), so if I continue working on this with you, it will probably end up looking more like that article. Finally, I posted to WT:ALBUM about this article. It's not necessary that you read or respond to it, but it seems like you might want to know. —Justin (koavf)TCM20:58, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

Huge improvement, thank you. Also, thanks for the heads up about the post at WT:ALBUM. Jujutacular T · C 21:06, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

Again I have decided to be a bit more methodical and post all of my suggestions at Talk:Illinois (album)/Comments, please post there if you are interested in focusing our efforts at improving this article. If you want to simply view the comments, they can be shown from the Album banner on Talk:Illinois (album). —Justin (koavf)TCM00:03, 22 April 2010 (UTC)

Pomplamoose

Sorry if I'm not doing this right. On the Pomplamoose undo, I was the source, I witnessed it when I was watching Big Bang Theory. How would I do that? Newtonke (talk) 06:59, 13 April 2010 (UTC)

Unfortunately, that would constitute original research. Everything on Wikipedia must be "verifiable", meaning anyone reading the article can look down at the sources and see for themselves where it came from. Really, there is no way to include that information unless someone else has discussed it. To be honest, I was a bit surprised. Are you certain that it wasn't the original version of the song that was in the Cadillac commercial? The Pomplamoose song is a cover of the 50s song Mr. Sandman. Maybe, if it is the Pomplamoose version in the commercial, they will talk about in a video sometime and we can include it :) Otherwise I don't think we can. Thank you, though. I appreciate your contributions and hope to see you around! Cheers, Jujutacular T · C 13:51, 13 April 2010 (UTC)

Non-admin closure - incorrect

You closed Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Lexie Marie (2nd nomination) as "keep." This was incorrect. The article was, at the very least, a non-consensus, probably a delete. Per NAC, non-admins are permitted to close "Unanimous or nearly unanimous keep after a full listing period." 3k-2d with all of the keep votes referencing very questionable "guideline" PORNBIO is not nearly unanimous. Please don't repeat these mistakes. Thanks. Hipocrite (talk) 14:55, 13 April 2010 (UTC)

You marked PORNBIO as disputed after I closed that discussion. I have absolutely no problem with the guideline changing, if that truly is consensus. However I do feel my closure was correct. I have opened it up for discussion at deletion review: Wikipedia:Deletion_review/Log/2010_April_13#Lexie_Marie. Jujutacular T · C 16:23, 13 April 2010 (UTC)

I'll just mention that there are some new reply options for this question, which also serves as an example of how the poll should progress when none of the available options suit the contributors. The question on dealing with unclear consensus has apparently been the most controversial so far. I remain hopeful that we will succeed in representing people's opinions by the time the poll ends. Feel free to change your vote or add a new reply option if the three new ones still don't quite work for you. (But obviously, try to create something general enough that it's likely to gather a following.) Thank you. Papa Lima Whiskey (talk) 09:18, 28 April 2010 (UTC)

Add List of counties in Utah

In the revision history you have "m blank space: discuss with me if this was intentional)" It was intentional on my part. The 2nd table looks cramped while the 1st table has space before and after the table. What is the proper way of doing this?

Also, you removed the the en dash between the dates in the second table. The format for the second table has changed, so it is moot, but why the removal? I'm still not sure on the hows of en dashes. Bgwhite (talk) 23:28, 29 April 2010 (UTC)

I believe it looks best as is, doesn't really seemed cramped to me. If you feel strongly I wouldn't oppose over it. As for the en dashes, I actually didn't remove them. I used the actual character itself (–) instead of the html code: (&ndash;) which produces the same thing. People commonly use the html code because the character itself is not on keyboards. It is however below the edit window next to "insert". Jujutacular T · C 00:29, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
Ah, learn something new everyday. Today was not to edit two articles at same time with different date formats and how to insert en dash. Thank You Bgwhite (talk) 05:47, 30 April 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2010 April newsletter

Round two is over, and we are down to our final 32. For anyone interested in the final standings (though not arranged by group) this page has been compiled. Congratulations to Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn (submissions), our clear overall round winner, and to Colombia ThinkBlue (submissions) and Norway Arsenikk (submissions), who were solidly second and third respectively. There were a good number of high scorers this round- competition was certainly tough! Round three begins tomorrow, but anything promoted after the end of round two is eligible for points. 16 contestants (eight pool leaders and eight wildcards) will progress to round four in two months- things are really starting to get competitive.

Judge iMatthew has retired from Wikipedia, and we wish him the best. The competition has been ticking over well with minimal need for judge intervention, so thank you to everyone making that possible. A special thank you goes to participants Bavaria Stone (submissions) and White Shadows (submissions) for their help in preparing for round three. Good luck everyone! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.
