[edit]Hello, Jpn55. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for article subjects for more information. We ask that you:
- avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, colleagues, company, organization, clients, or competitors;
- propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (you can use the {{edit COI}} template)—don't forget to give details of reliable sources supporting your suggestions;
- disclose your conflict of interest when discussing affected articles (see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest § How to disclose a COI);
- avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam § External link spamming);
- do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.
In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.
Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicizing, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Specifically, I noticed you added citations to one John P Nelson, which I assume is you from your user name. In both cases I saw, they seem to be topical additions, but per WP:SELFCITE, it would be better to propose it on an article talk page first. I think your contributions so far have been great, but wanted to make sure you were aware of the policy so you could avoid any pitfalls later. Thank you for your contributions so far, and I hope to see more in the future! EducatedRedneck (talk) 18:04, 11 November 2024 (UTC)
- No financial compensation or other kinds of support were received in connection with the Wikipedia page entitled "Alcohol tax." I declare that I do not have a Conflict of Interest. The page entry reflects my independent research on the topic and no outside support is forthcoming in the future of any nature. I am Professor Emeritus of Economics and have worked on this topic since 1993, with 50 publications to my credit on alcohol taxation, pricing, and advertising. Where relevant, selected self-citations appear on the page but these are necessary to fully account for the economic details associated with the topic of alcohol taxation, e.g., tax pass-through, price elasticity, and tax/price effects on alcohol harms. Coverage of the economics would be incomplete without these references. Wikilinks and other references in addition to my own are also provided for both completeness and balance. Jpn55 (talk) 13:53, 12 November 2024 (UTC)
- That's about what I figured. All the same, it's good form to make it an edit request on the article talk page (such as with the Price Elasticity page) when possible. As I'm sure you remember from your PhD ethics training, COI is often more about the appearance of a conflict, rather than an actual one. So it goes with self-citing; it's much easier to make a request and let someone else determine that yes, it is indeed worth including. I know it's odd, since self-citation is common in the literature, but here on Wikipedia it'll encourage busybodies like me to ask you annoying questions. EducatedRedneck (talk) 14:40, 12 November 2024 (UTC)
- Okay, got it. I can easily re-track the self-citations on the price elasticity and pass-through (economics) pages. Jpn55 (talk) 22:27, 12 November 2024 (UTC)
