Moving articles to Azeri names

[edit]

Please don't do this without consensus; moves are big news and difficult to revert if done wrong, so let's make sure this is right before doing it. From what I understand on Wikipedia, we try to avoid using non-Latin scripts in article titles, and that's exactly what you're doing here. Why is the transliteration not sufficient? --Golbez (talk) 17:44, 27 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The only Azeri placenames ending in a "y" are the two I moved, which have the dotless i in Azeri, nearly all dotless i letters are kept, otherwise they would use a dotted i. The pair used a very uncommon transliteration which is idiosyncratic in pronunciation.
See the city of Masallı page, and the city of Saatlı page, additionally there is a lot more sources and Google results for the correct way. There is also a lot of other articles using the correct transliteration, the only ones using the wrong one is towns with "Masally" after it. Try Google with "site:en.wikipedia.org Masally" and then search with the right spelling.
I think there was some error in how these two Rayon's came to be spelled in this anomalous way. John Cengiz talk 18:14, 27 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm of the mind that if we should be consistent in our transliteration; if we're going to change the dotless i for any of the rayons, we should do it for all of them. If replacing ı with y at the end of a word is nonstandard, then should it be replaced with i? I think my reference for when I made these articles was [1] which of course could be wrong. --Golbez (talk) 18:49, 27 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Problem?

[edit]

Hello, there! I think you are not quite familiar with Hindustani pronunciation. Please see the fourth paragraph in this section. The Urdu pronunciation IS indeed eh+mud (you can check that out on my user page, for I too, have Ahmed in my name). In Urdu, if a schwa alone comes before an h, followed by no other vowel, or if the h is surrounded on both sides by schwas, a fronting of the vowel(s) occurs to an /ɛ/ sound, rather than the schwa. To you, it might seem odd, because you may have never heard it that way. You may ask anyone. To me the aah- pronunciation seems odd, for we always say eh-. Moreover, the pronunciation of a schwa can never become an aa sound, because the orthography rules omit the vowel between a and h, which implies a hidden SHORT vowel. I am not an inexperienced user who just wanted to put up a wrong or a localised pronunciation. I can give you another example. Many english people say Taj Mah+hal, which is quite incorrect. The correct one is Taj Meh+hell. Got it? I hope this explanation is enough. I am reverting it back. Regards.

I can understand the "Ehmad" pronouciation. I know the actual Urdu pronouciation does vary, I would still guess more using the "Ah" begining. It would be wise to include both pronouciations. John Cengiz talk 09:29, 23 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No! The actual pronunciation does NOT vary. Where it varies, it is usually due to non-native speakers of Urdu speaking it in their own manner of pronunciation, as it occurs in Pakistan, where regional pronunciations and accents influence the actual Urdu pronunciation. One reason is that native Urdu speakers form just 7% of the population and all the rest, though many of which can understand and speak fluently, are not native speakers. They transform the actual pronunciation to suit themselves. I think that is what you mean when you say that the Urdu pronunciation varies. Literary circles contend that ehmad is the ONLY correct pronunciation in Urdu. So the question of inclusion of the aah- pronunciation should not arise. By the way, the being-discussed spelling is not a romanisation. It is done using IPA, where exact phonemes are required. If it were a romanisation, we would still read ah- as eh- without even being aware of the change of vowel (many people consider it a merely a changed accent from the Arabic one to be responsible for a different sound instead of a change in vowel), unless told. Here, the case is different, so I think that the ah- one is not preferable. Regards.
