Off-topic question

Hello Johan. I am writing you because you are probably the only Swedish friend I have on Wikipedia. I have one question for you. My good friend is researching his family heritage. He is Czech, as his close ancestors but his surname is not Czech, nor Slavic and even probably not German (many Czechs bear German surname). Some old family story says their surname is of Swedish or Danish heritage. According to that story one Swedish soldier settled in Silesia during the Thirty Years' War and married a Czech peasant girl. :) The surname is "Krumnikl", it appears almost only in the Czech Republic and Germany (Czech emmigration). It was most probably changed from its Nordic version by the Czech authorities, so the possible original one would look differently. What do you, as a Swede, think? Hi Darwinek! Most likely that surname is not of Scandinavian origin. This is because of two reasons, the first is that surnames for other than the clergy, nobility and burghers were introduced relatively late (18th and 19th century) in Sweden (and Scandinavia), and if they existed they were usually patronyms adding the suffix -son after the father's name, or soldiers' names (although they were not in widespread use in the mid 17th century) which were usually a trait (Stark, "Strong"), or something with connection to the military (Svärd, "Sword") or nature (Björk, "Birch"). "Krumnikl" is not even close to any of those two options. The second reason is that "Krumnikl" is not close to any common Scandinavian surname of today either. My first guess would be indeed be that the name is of German or Czech origin. In my ears it sounds Slavic. :) Sorry I couldn't help more than that. – Elisson • T • C • 18:06, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

Swedish regiments

Hello! I must say that you have done a really impressive work on the Swedish military regiments, I think you really deserve some credit for your work there. I have a question though: is there any specific reason that the articles were moved from their English names to their native (Swedish) names? On the official websites of the regiments the names have been translated into English, see for example [1][2][3][4][5]. Since Wikipedia prefer using official English names when such exist, would you mind if the articles are moved again to their English equivalent names? /Slarre 03:09, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

Hi and thanks for the credit! Sadly I've committed myself to all too many tasks to be able to work regularly on the articles (and those missing), but I hope to get some spare time this summer. On to the naming issue. The reason I started moving and creating regimental articles to/with Swedish names was that I wanted consistency (I love consistency. Maybe too much). I know that the naming guidelines say that one should use English names when they are available and commonly used, but since a vast majority of the regiments never have had and never will have an official English name, I thought the best idea was to have all names in Swedish and let redirects do the job for official English names. Because I don't want to get into giving regiments such as Jämtlands fältjägarregemente, Drottningens livregemente till fot, Finska värvade bataljonen, Riksänkedrottningens livregemente i Pommern, Östra skånska utskrivningsregementet, Tavastehus, Viborgs och Nyslotts läns tremänningsregemente till fot, Västgöta ståndsdragoner, and so on fitting English names (even if I tried the best I could at the list of regiments). I hope that this answers your question. Thanks for the answer, and sorry for my late reply (have been a bit unexpectedly busy with IRL lately..). I see your dilemma, and your wish to preserve consistency among articles. My opinion is that we should always try to use suitable English names when possible, as outlined in Wikipedia:Naming conventions (use English). When there is no official translation, then an inofficial translation, based on the official translations of Swedish or other regiments, should do good. There are some tricky cases indeed as you point out, but I believe that all those could be solved after some discussing. For example, Drottningens livregemente till fot would probably be translated as "Queen's Life Regiment of Foot" and Riksänkedrottningens livregemente i Pommern as "Queen Dowager's Life Regiment in Pomerania" etc. This makes more sense, since the Swedish name doesn't say anything at all to those who don't understand Swedish language. Do you think that we should get more people involved in this discussion to get some more input on this? /Slarre 00:10, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

I prefer to talk in the language of the Wikipedia I'm on (so other people can read our conversation) so I'll answer in English. There are three standard sizes for the club crest image as written in the Club Manual of Style of the Football Project; 75px, 100px or 150px, depending on the size of the crest. Very tall crests should use the small size to not make the infobox too high, and very wide crests should use the large size to not be too small, but regular, almost rectangular crests (such as most Swedish clubs) should use 100px. I just checked out sandbox 3. It looks pretty darned impressive. You sure you don't want to start moving some of that content into article space? It would make one Hell of a DYK! I'd be happy to help out with copyediting and such. Btw, could I get your opinion about Image:Pike and shot model.jpg. I tried including it in pike and shot but the primary author went ballistic and just kept auto-reverting me. It's included in Thirty Years' War (for the time being). It's not that bad, is it?

I've been quite busy lately, studying for my examinations, and then the summer work started so I haven't had time to finish it before summer as I originally planned. There's only a finish for the "Cold War and myths" section and a short summary of each fort in the presently empty "Forts" section left to do though, and I hope to get it done in a few weeks time. Then of course DYK (even though it might be a little controversial since I've "expanded" it since January 2006...) and after that FAC. I'll remember to notify you when I'm done, all the copyediting help I can get is appreciated! I worked on medieval cuisine and several other cuisine history articles for months before I submitted them for DYK. Anything that isn't article space is for all practical purposes new content. I doubt the DYK-regulars will get fussy if they get something really substantial to present to readers. And it's a great way of getting lots of attention.

Valaudus FC?

Hi there, I wondered if I might ask you a question about Swedish football. A book I have on Scottish Internationalists lists John Brownlie as playing for a Valaudus on loan from Middlesbrough during the 1983 season but a Google search found no reference to this club. I assume Valaudus is either a typo or some form of sponsorship (similar to FC Superfund). From a quick look at your excellent 1983 in Swedish football, Vasalunds seems the most likely candidate for a mispelling. Can you shed any more light? Caledonian Place 22:02, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

Hi, sorry for the late answer. As you say "Valaudus" does not seem to exist, and it does not "sound Swedish" at all. Even if there is some form of typo in there, it doesn't come close to anything that resemples Swedish. As you say, "Vasalund" (the ending "s" is a posessive "s" and the club is called "Vasalund" if the suffix "IF" is not used) seems to be the most likely candidate, but even that is a major misspelling... There have been very few examples of sponsorship names in Swedish football (the only case I can recollect is Panos Ljungskile SK, if you disregard IF Saab which was not really sponsored by Saab but rather the official sport club of the company) so that is out of the question as well. There is nothing on the website of Vasalund (now called Vasalund/Essinge IF), but if you want to investigate further, the mail to the office of the club is kansli[at]vasalundsif.se. Thanks for your help. With the name not sounding Swedish, the difference to Vasalund being an unrealistic typo and sponsorship names being as scare in Sweden as they are in Scotland (Ferranti Thistle had to change their name to join the Scottish League), I think the the evidence seems quite conclusive that Brownlie didn't play in Sweden.

I am aware that there are several errors in the book, although these are predominantly with 19th Century players, on whom information is often sketchy and difficult to track down. As it was only published three years after the supposed loan (for which dates are given), I thought it was perhaps more likely to be true. If its not a figment of the author's imagination, the other possibility I considered was that in researching it an abbreviation of Switzterland had accidentally become Sweden by publication time.
