Welcome to Esperanza!

Welcome, Jimothytrotter, to Esperanza! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member you should read the guide to what to do now or you may be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is Stressbusters, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. We will send you newsletters to keep you up to date. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Proposals.

If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact Natalya by email or talk page. Consider introducing yourself at the Esperanza talk page! Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). If you're new to IRC, you may find help at an IRC tutorial. I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to work!

I'm glad you've reformed...

...and I accept your implied apology. I would advise you to put some distance between yourself and your friend, however. Your support of him is admirable, but you are just dragging yourself down with him and your close association suggests that any future block on him for trolling and personal attacks would effect you too. So your new start is a good idea and I wish you good luck. Happy editing! ЯEDVERS 08:55, 10 September 2006 (UTC)

...is explained here. Whilst no formal standards exist, there are many informal ones. Some people publish lists of their criteria for supporting or opposing nominations for sysop - based on edit numbers, blocks, users welcomed, vandalism reverted, helpful things done for the 'pedia, length of service, that type of thing. I don't do this, but my criteria for support are (roughly) that the editing patterns of the nominee are useful to the encyclopedia; that there is some evidence of community input; and that the editor needs and would make use of the tool. I usually only comment to support unless I really don't trust the user with the tools. And I usually only comment on editors who I have dealt with personally or have seen in action a fair bit. Which is quite a lot of them because I edit everywhere on Wikipedia, fairly at random somedays. ЯEDVERS 13:19, 10 September 2006 (UTC)

Can't i have my sig so i can just do those 4 strange lines instead of KingLloydTALK

when commenting without a header use a Colon to add an indent, as for the signature you can do that by clicking "my preferences" up the top near Log out, change your signature to the {{subst}} thingy. JiMoThYTALK

a) I fixed the header problem for the userboxes. It works fine b) However, the awards I don't think will work - this has been a long-running problem on Wikipedia. I'll see if I can find a solution, but I'm not sure I can. Cheers, Daniel.Bryant 07:06, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

Changes made by yourself to the Covent Garden article.

Just to let you know, your bot (?) made a mistake in correcting grammar. It changed "1600s" to "1600 S" in the context of the century. I have fixed it here but wanted to let you know. What were you trying to do? Diliff | (Talk) (Contribs) 11:29, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

"Automated grammatical changes"

Hi Jimothytrotter: what program(?) are you using to make all of your "Automated gramatical changes" edits? You are approving each edit, right? If you are not approving each edit you must open up a bot account and get it approved at WP:B/RFA (you should also read WP:BOT). —Mets501 (talk) 13:30, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

I am approving each one myself, and am not using a bot. * am using buttons which i found on a script and added to my monobook.js. I try to revert changes promptly if the script makes erros.
Thankyou for your concern. -- JiMoThYTALK 13:34, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
Great! Thanks for helping improve the project in "minor edit" ways. —Mets501 (talk) 13:36, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

On the subject of your "automated gramatical changes" (which, by the way, you should fix the spelling of, as it doesn't exactly inspire confidence) — could you maybe stick with changes that have a purpose? I'm thinking of edits like this one, where most of the changes have no effect on the resulting page, but make the diff all but unreadable, making it very hard to figure out what's actually changed. Thanks in advance! Ruakh 14:22, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

User Ruakh has basically stated my own concern with the automated changes on Free will. I can't even read the diff to figure out what the changes were. And this is on a Featured Article. You must have a GREAT deal of confidence in automation which i do not share.--Francesco Franco aka Lacatosias 14:40, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
Your changes at infinity today include capitalizing the <math> tag to <Math>. How strange. You also capitalized the word what inside a direct quotation, which disagrees with WP:STYLE. CMummert 14:35, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

The reason for the automated gramtical changes was to boost my main space edit count in a "legal" way! I am hopeing to get VandalProof and subsequently stop using this method of editing, however until then I will be forced into remaining with the old method. Hope that clears it up-- JiMoThYTALK 14:47, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

That doesn't address my concern at all! You did make at least one real change at Inflection — you capitalized the first letters of some list items — but I can't tell if that's the only real change, or what. If you want to make improvements, that's great, but if you feel the need to hide your edits by making diffs unreadable, then I have to suspect that you don't really intend them as improvements. (Your comment makes me wonder if perhaps you're verging on disrupting Wikipedia to illustrate the point that mere edit counts aren't necessarily a meaningful barrier to entry; if so, be warned that disrupting Wikipedia is verboten whatever the reason, and can get you blocked.) Ruakh 15:09, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
If you want the editcount of a superstar and be a helpful editor at the same time, you could consider joining us at Wikipedia:WikiProject Spam. There is so much spam being added to Wikipedia continiously now, and we really need help to revert it all, and talk sense to the spammers. Haakon 17:35, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

VandalProof

Sure, consider yourself approved. It might take me a while to get through the list though! (I'm gone for one week and the whole list backs up... Oh well, at least I'm needed ;-) Prodego talk 15:14, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

Automated gramatical changes

Hi. I suggest you do not do the "automated gramatical changes" in articles. They achieve little besides inserting a newline here and there, but those changes fill up watchlists and may mask vandalism. A better venue for your energy would be I think for example spell-checking, or fixing articles in Category:All pages needing to be wikified, etc. Wonder what you think, you can reply here. Thanks. Oleg Alexandrov (talk) 15:58, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

I second this. The changes to Encryption were counterproductive. Nice work on all the spelling fixes though. Haakon 17:23, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

Agreed

I only built the script this morning and was unaware of the changes it made to the diffs etc. I have been accepted for vandalproof and can therfore stop using the script. I wish i knew how to get vandalproof to accept my log in attempt though! I will also try to take a look at those suggested articles and clean some of them up. Thanks-- JiMoThYTALK 16:01, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

RE: Vandalprrof problems

I'm not sure it's the reason, but try capitalising your username. If this fails, let me know. Thanks! —Xyrael / 16:40, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

Your script is making a mess

As you should know, Wikipedia uses sentence case in titles, not all caps. Your script turned "16-bit" into "16-Bit" in Microsoft Windows, which is clearly incorrect. Please get your script fixed ASAP. Also, the correct spelling you're looking for is "grammatical." --Coolcaesar 17:49, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

Consider reversing what you have wrought

You should probably consider self-reverting the "automated gramatical changes" you made since they cause so much disruption to the difs and may have caused other undesirable changes (e.g. "Bit"). I've reverted a couple I came across, but I see there is quite a list of pages you've affected with this script. I'm sure many of those pages do not yet have further edits and so you can easily revert them (the others should probably stay the same). -R. S. Shaw 20:52, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

I have considered it

Its not going to be easy for me to do as I am a busy guy studying for my G.C.S.E's. I agree that some of them should be reverted however they are not all bad and i do not have the time to do it. I ahte to ahve to take this approach but I'm sure that whoever is next editing the article can decide what to do.

Appologies yet again-- JiMoThYTALK 21:16, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

Your recent edit to Thomas Sumpter Comprehensive School (diff) was reverted by an automated bot that attempts to recognize and repair vandalism to Wikipedia articles. If the bot reverted a legitimate edit, please accept my humble creator's apologies – if you bring it to the attention of the bot's owner, we may be able to improve its behavior. Thanks for the barnstar

Thanks for the barnstar you awarded to me on the 10th. :D --Actown e 16:52, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

Please pay attention...

You corrected the spelling on obvious vandalism. I'm sorry, but that is just as bad as the vandalism itself and ends up covering said vandalism in recent changes. Either be more careful, or pay attention. --Jeffrey O. Gustafson - Shazaam! - <*> 18:49, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

September Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade
Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors!
What's New?
September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. Those who wish to help with the election staff should also list themselves!
