Whisperback

You have new message/s Hello. You have a new message at Kudpung's talk page. 15:02, 28 July 2014 (UTC)

I'm blocked??

It seems that I'm blocked. I don't know why, but I'm blocked. I guess Anna Frodesiak did this by mistake. So, any patrolling admin please unblock me. Thanks, Jim Carter (from public cyber) 18:58, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

It also seems that I'm autoblocked, need assistance. I don't know how to deal with autoblocks. :\ Jim Carter (from public cyber) 19:04, 29 July 2014 (UTC)
Hehe the block was gone. :) Jim Carter (from public cyber) 19:17, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

Reply and my concerns

Alan has been stalking my edits and I find that especially annoying. He has also harassed me by giving me numerous false accusations as well as threats that 'I'll be blocked' and stuff when the only thing that I've done wrong is violation against the surname thing. If people don't like my edits they could simply revert it. I only erase and blank out stuff that are irrelevant/false/unnecessary. I've been here for two years and I have never been confronted on having to write a summary every time I blank out incorrect information. Alan didn't bother to reason and just continued to annoy me. I've bottled up a lot of anger for this person and I am skeptical on whether or not he's here to cause trouble instead of contributing to this community. -Sk8erPrince (talk)

First of all, Sk8erPrince, welcome to my talk page. Every editor has some stalkers even I have some, you might feel them to annoying you, but they are not actually harassing you. How many years you're here is not a factor but how you behave with others express how much experience you have. Wikipedia is a big community were cooporation between each other is very needed. We need you but remember, attacking people on there talk page is never a good thing. Alan is a good editor and you must have talked with him in a more cool and civil way and I'm sure he will understand, but being uncivil just makes the matter worse. Remember civility, when talking with others makes you. If you haven't done anything wrong (Even if you have mistaken somewhere) never use inflammatory words. Always be cool, if you're angry don't edit, take a break or a shower, cool your blood and then in a silent and civil way discuss about your concerns. Even if the other is rude, stay calm and the situation will automatically come down. I'm sure you haven't done anything wrong, but still edit summary are always necessary for others. Edit summary explain others how you improve pages. Every one is different. It is useless to anger, staying cool is the main thing. Now, never be uncivil, if you are having any trouble with anyone, stay cool and talk to them in a friendlier way and if the problem continues, don't be angry, go at WP:AIN and make a civil post on how you're disturbed with valid WP:DIFF. But again when making such post always be civil. Never use uncivil words. BTW, I think you should get a traineer, who can adopt you and help you to learn how Wikipedia works. I'm also a traineer, I can adopt you if you want me. Regards, Jim Carter (from public cyber) 15:56, 30 July 2014 (UTC)

Speedy deletion declined: Redemption (Revenge the Fate album)

Hello Jim Carter - Public. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Redemption (Revenge the Fate album), a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: The band's article exists, at least for now. Depending on AFD outcome it can be deleted as A9 later. Thank you. §FreeRangeFrogcroak 00:52, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

@FreeRangeFrog: Thanks for letting me know. It is clear that the band article fails WP:NBAND. I orginally thought of nominating both for speedy, but it is always better to make a community consensus on this type of cases. Thanks for the decline, but the results will be the same. Cheers, Jim Carter (from public cyber) 06:07, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

Hello Jim Carter - Public. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Sandcastles.ae Dubai Property Portal, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: not six months yet. Thank you. JohnCD (talk) 20:13, 4 August 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the note JohnCD. I don't know the reason but it's showing in my phone, "Last edited 6 months ago... " at the top of the page. I assume it is a bug?? Jim Carter (from public cyber) 20:19, 4 August 2014 (UTC)
I don't know why that should be - the page history shows that it was edited by the author on 16 Feb and declined on 19 Feb. You don't actually need to tag these G13 pages, because there is a bot, Hasteurbot, which tags them automatically. JohnCD (talk) 20:28, 4 August 2014 (UTC)
Do you use Wikipedia mobile version?? It was showing something else. Anyway, I'm actually searching for eligible drafts that can be improved and moved to mainspace. While doing this I came across some rubbish stuffs that qualified for G13. That is why doing this work. Cheers, Jim Carter (from public cyber) 20:43, 4 August 2014 (UTC)
Good work! No, I've never used the mobile version. I didn't even now you could edit from it, I thought it was read-only. I must have a look. JohnCD (talk) 21:41, 4 August 2014 (UTC)
Yep, you can edit. We also have Wikipedia Beta app which works on android. Best, Jim Carter (from public cyber) 05:56, 5 August 2014 (UTC)

RfA

Just FYI - Philg has been nominated for adminship. Thought you would like to know. --MelanieN (talk) 15:30, 14 August 2014 (UTC)

Thanks Melanie, for the message. Btw I saw your mail few days ago, thank you very much for those kind words. I might have never become what I'm now if you haven't mentored me. I might have ended up as blocked if you won't help. I'm taking my higher education at a hostle where no private computers allowed and mobile phones are allowed occasionally. When I joined the hostle I thought using phones and computer to access internet is prohibited (that is why I declared a Wikibreak) but later I came to know it is allowed occasionally. Anyway, what do you mean by that? Jim Carter (from public cyber) 19:52, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
I'm glad to know there's nothing wrong (you didn't explain your mysterious disappearance). And I'm glad you aren't REALLY gone for two years! Your education is important and has to take first priority, but Wikipedia needs you too - and your friends here like seeing you around. As for "that," you know perfectly well what I meant: I have no interest in becoming an admin now or in the foreseeable future. I like what I'm doing now; why add the hassle and stress of admin duties? But if I ever change my mind you will be the first to know; fair enough? --MelanieN (talk) 20:08, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
@MelanieN: Yep :) Thanks. I learned many things from this community even how to behave with others. I will be around closing (WP:NAC) closing/!voting at Afds or stalking someone's talkpage. I'm happy that I have good friends like you. Btw I saw this! Awesome work! you deserve a barnstar for that. I will also like to take some help from you in turning this to a featured list. Thanks again, Jim Carter (from public cyber) 20:36, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
Whoa, that might be beyond my competence. Maybe somebody with experience with films could help you. That's a very impressive list - I'm amazed what you can do from a phone!! Yes, I was happy with the Preston Taylor article. I didn't nominate it for DYK because... well, you know. But we do still need articles on his wife, and on Greenwood Cemetery. --MelanieN (talk) 21:13, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
@MelanieN: Okay. It's a tough job for any mobile user to access Wikipedia when bugs are not fixed. Anyway, Greenwood Cemetery is ready here. You can move it if you feel it's ready. I can't start article on his wife until I return home. Starting an article needs some research which I can't do from here. Jim Carter (from public cyber) 13:24, 15 August 2014 (UTC)
Good, Greenwood looks just about ready. I'll take one more look and then move it. Might take me a few days, I've got a lot of things to do this weekend. Thanks for all your help on the "Hitler's Munich apartment" article! You might be wondering why I am working on an article so far from my usual interests. Here's why: I was patrolling PRODs and noticed that one. It was unreferenced and poorly written, but with a quick check I found there were a lot of references available, so I removed the PROD and promised to improve the article. There's still some unsourced stuff left over from the original article, as you noted. --MelanieN (talk) 16:27, 15 August 2014 (UTC)

@MelanieN: Hmm. Good work! I saw you're also busy improving Alcohol and health. I will also try to improve it (I'm also a organic chemistry student) but it seems most of the content is copied from other articles. Anyway, you deserve another barnstar for saving Hitler's Munich apartment from deletion. Cheers, Jim Carter (from public cyber) 16:47, 15 August 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the offer, but don't do anything yet with "alcohol and health". I have started a discussion on the talk page and invited a few people who know the backstory. There is a history there that you are probably not aware of. There was a user who created numerous articles about alcohol, mostly very anti-alcohol and not very scientific, with much of the material copy-pasted from other articles. Finally in June he came to the community's attention, when he spammed the encyclopedia with literally hundreds of links to his new article "Alcohol (drug)". The upshot was that most of his work was undone, and many of his articles were deleted after transferring what was worth salvaging to other articles. He himself was eventually indef-blocked for his disruptive editing and for refusing to understand why it was disruptive. Somehow this article escaped noticed, maybe because it was created a while ago, or maybe because he didn't actually create it, he just expanded it and wrote most of the content. I honestly don't know whether I favor keeping it or not; that's why I am soliciting input. (I couldn't remember exactly who all the people were who cleaned up after him, because those article talk pages are gone.) If we do keep it, it needs major rewriting, but I'm not even going to start until I get community input on whether to keep it. --MelanieN (talk) 18:36, 15 August 2014 (UTC)
@MelanieN: According to me, no community consensus is needed to remove WP:UNDUE materials. Be WP:BOLD and remove unsourced dubious materials. Remove unreliable sources and orginal research stuffs. Do section merging with other articles (from where most of the content is copied). After doing all this if the article qualifies for a stand alone article, keep it. If no then redirect (BOLD) to Alcohol. Cheers, Jim Carter (from public cyber) 06:53, 16 August 2014 (UTC)

OBC Issue on the Jat article

Would like your help in rectifying the issue of OBC on the Jat article, which sources would be acceptable, and where do you think it should be noted that the Jats have requested via Captain Amarinder Singh to be included into the OBC reservation system to gain preferential treatment. Since the lead currently is unbalanced and seems like a POV, I'd prefer the whole caste system and OBC system to be in a different section and not in the lead, I agree with you on that. In the lead there should just be a simple summary explaining who and what the Jat are, without trying to cram everything into the lead section. That article needs some serious work. More importantly DNA has reported: The NCBC has put its 138-page report on its website <ncbc.nic.in> to clarify that it did not advice any such reservation and in fact "rejected" the Jats' case "as they are not socially and educationally backward communities[1]."" Here is a link from and authratative ( Indian Social Institute) source: (PDF) [2] Syanaee (talk) 21:11, 16 August 2014 (UTC)

Syanaee I started a thread on the talk page and I'm willing to help improve this article though I have little knowledge about the subject. The Hindu is not a very reliable source, even Times of India is not a reliable one (people often call it Toiletpaper of India, I suppose). So, I personally prefer if you create a subsection or a section and add those materials followed by NOT A SINGLE but MULTIPLE reliable sources. If cited with multiple sources, I guess there will be no problem adding those stuffs. Adding a brief summary will do no harm to the lead, Although in it's current condition the lead looks like a mess and a bit WP:UNDUE. Jim Carter (from public cyber) 21:29, 16 August 2014 (UTC)
OK thanks will check it out. I'm new to wiki editing some am not absolutely clear on everything. However, there are many Indian articles especially based on tribes/caste which have a lot of problems either they are lofty and grandiose or they are rubbished, lack of naturality. Syanaee (talk) 21:34, 16 August 2014 (UTC)
Syanaee Wikipedia is standing on the pillars of reliable third party sources. If you can't provide sources for materials then it is likely that it will be challenged and removed. You can see the above threads where I asked for citation and quotation from Sitush. I believe him but I don't believe sources until I WP:VERIFY it carefully. This is how Wikipedia works. Anyway, thanks for the message and happy editing! Jim Carter (from public cyber) 21:47, 16 August 2014 (UTC)

Tagging

Hi JC, I'm a bit mystified about some of your recent tagging. For example, in this one you have basically tagged every sentence with a {{cn}} and then added a {{qn}} to the source that is cited at the end of the paragraph.

I am aware that Google Books doesn't display the same content everywhere in the world but, really, what exactly is it about those statements that necessitates a quote? It seems to fly in the face of WP:AGF unless you actually have reason to suspect that the statements are wrong. And did you actually look for the book? I can see it in the UK and via a proxy server, in the US. I could point you in the direction of a proxy if that would help. - Sitush (talk) 15:48, 10 August 2014 (UTC)

I should add that I do have a vested interest in this. The bulk, if not in fact all, of that tagged material was added by me, eg: here. I'm not expecting special treatment but it does irk me a bit unless you've got a good reason to doubt me. - Sitush (talk) 15:55, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
Hiya Sitush, I'm very confused about everything related to India. I don't doubt you but I doubt almost every source related to India even I doubt TOIs reliablity. Recently I've AGF'd an article's non online sources and after a few research I found that book at Amazon and guess what happened when I started verifing the content? Nothing matched the article with respect to the book. That is the reason why I prefer using quotation. Yes, I added {{cn}} tags since all the claims seems to me dubious. And when I can't see the source I'm forced to place those tags. Now you can remove those tags since I trust you will not add dubious materials but I prefer giving quotation, non Indian Wikipedians can even challenge the materials. Can you provide me the link to view the book??
Btw I trust you, but I can't trust the source you used until I see it. Cheers, Jim Carter (from public cyber) 16:23, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
OK. I would have to quote the entire paragraph from the book, which might be considered excessive. I'd have to put it on the talk page rather than in the article. There is a link in the citation. Does that one not work for you where you are? - Sitush (talk) 16:27, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
Quote not needed, Sitush, if it is excessive. I just AGF'd in this case. No I can't access that link, it is returning HTML 403. Jim Carter (from public cyber) 16:34, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
No, you'll get a quote. I'll type it up on the article talk page. Alternatively, I could email you a screenshot from the UK version of GBooks or you could try using this proxy to the US Gbooks. If using the proxy, enter http://books.google.com in the first search box, click ok and then enter the book title in the next search box (which is the GBooks search itself). - Sitush (talk) 16:41, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
Did the proxy work for you? - Sitush (talk) 11:45, 17 August 2014 (UTC)
@Sitush: I didn't checked it (See the section below) I'm in hostle and barely have time to do that. I AGF. Jim Carter (from public cyber) 13:09, 17 August 2014 (UTC)

The script

Hi Jim! I got a tip from Philg88 about a script you had linked to him. I have now installed it at my account and it's working fine. Very useful. Thank you so much for suggesting it! All the best, w.carter-Talk 21:59, 19 August 2014 (UTC)

Yes, thank you again for that. If you could enhance it to deal with Harvard referencing that would be even better ;-).  Philg88 talk 05:07, 20 August 2014 (UTC)
Just one more comment about your script. I had accidentally done something that kept messing up the refs at Swedish Museum of Natural History and I just could not figure out what was wrong (!) until I clicked on the green button after having installed the script. Then, hey presto! My mistake became crystal clear and I sorted it out in a couple of seconds. :) Amazing! Thanks again, w.carter-Talk 23:46, 20 August 2014 (UTC)
Your welcome W.carter :) As Phil already noted I will work to enable {{Sfn}} citation format in that script. Thanks again, Jim Carter (from public cyber) 08:15, 21 August 2014 (UTC)

P.S. I will let you know when ever I get to know about any other good editing script. Jim Carter (from public cyber) 08:15, 21 August 2014 (UTC)

World Spiritual Foudation

Dear Jim Carter. Can you take a look at the AfD for the five day old page World Spiritual Foundation. I just nominated it. However, I now see that it has been speedy-deleted not once, but twice in the recent past. Can you take a look? It has got me quite confused as this is a unique situation, and I'm not that clear on AfD. Tajudin69 (talk) 21:59, 5 September 2014 (UTC)

@Tajudin69: It seems the article has been speedy deleted by Huon. And I see the discussion has already been closed. Tajudin, it is not a unique situation. If an article on discussion qualifies for any of the speedy deletion criteria then anyone can be bold and place a speedy deletion tag on the article requesting an admin to speedy delete the article instead of waiting a week. Please take a look here to know how Afd works. If the article is deleted by speedy deletion but still the Afd is not closed, ask any uninvolved admin or good standing editor to close it. Let me know if you need any more help. Cheers, Jim Carter (from public cyber) 05:54, 6 September 2014 (UTC)

Reference Errors on 11 September

Hello, I'm ReferenceBot. I have automatically detected that an edit performed by you may have introduced errors in referencing. It is as follows:

Please check this page and fix the errors highlighted. If you think this is a false positive, you can report it to my operator. Thanks, ReferenceBot (talk) 00:35, 12 September 2014 (UTC)  Fixed Jim Carter (from public cyber) 09:08, 12 September 2014 (UTC)

Hello Jim and MelanieN,

Thanks, Jim, for closing out the nomination discussion for the Martin MacNeill article. I am planning on doing the steps mentioned - moving, merging, and rewording the combined articles... but I think I have to wait until an administrator makes changes to the article and article talk page with the results of the discussion. Is that right or do I just go ahead?

Thanks!--CaroleHenson (talk) 16:09, 28 September 2014 (UTC)

Hey, thanks so much! That was quick!
If you have a chance, do you mind closing down Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Michele Marie Somers and her article? (If that doesn't go against the processes for working the AfD queues).
Thanks!--CaroleHenson (talk) 17:15, 28 September 2014 (UTC)
@CaroleHenson: Sorry for the late reply. My Internet connection was so slow that it took me an hour to close the first Afd. Now, I have closed both. Thank you for the message, have a nice day. Jim Carter (from public cyber) 18:09, 28 September 2014 (UTC)

Seriously? LOL!

You came all the way to my talk page to demonstrate your inability to read comments not meant for you? I can only assume you also lack the ability to write that much if reading it is so difficult. LOL! OK, but seriously.....if you wish to comment with more than TLDR, you are more than welcome to do so at any time. The above was just sarcasm and not how I really feel about you.--Mark Miller (talk) 21:02, 28 September 2014 (UTC)

Hello Mark, Ha ha... I'm a super stalker ;-) but at times I don't have anything to say so I just add somewhat awkward messages. I have seen you around, but we don't had any direct discussions so I left that message just to start a discussion. Anyway, nice to meet you. Thank you for the message and have a nice day :-) Jim Carter (from public cyber) 08:16, 29 September 2014 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks for barnstar! I don't like people profiting from a volunteer project, so you set them up, I'm happy to knock them down (: Jimfbleak - talk to me? 09:50, 29 September 2014 (UTC)

Article needs improvement

Too long... having problem when using phone to access

Hi, Jim! I happened to be reading the article at English-medium education and discovered that the "India" section is awful. It consists of a single quote from somebody about how Indians use English; it says absolutely nothing about how English-medium schools fit into the educational system in India. The article has an extensive section about the British Raj for heavens sake! but nothing about modern India. If you or one of your talk page stalkers are looking for an article in need of improvement, I recommend that one. Thanks. --MelanieN (talk) 21:18, 26 August 2014 (UTC)

@MelanieN: Hahaha... it was a awesome joke! Do you believe what our former prime minister, Manmohan Singh has told?? ...Nevertheless, that English has been enriched by Indian creativity as well and we have given you back R.K. Narayan and Salman Rushdie. Today, English in India is seen as just another Indian language. He claimed this things without actually digging into what statistic says. English is NOT seen as just another Indian language. 43% (I suppose) Indians know nothing about English. People of West Rajasthan don't know even how to write there name in English. You will break into laugh if I explain how students were taught in any local Indian English medium school (I can email you some videos). I'm sorry I can't add any materials in that section because I can find only negative stuffs which will make the section UNDUE. Only a handful of people can speak English in a professional manner. Our current prime minister Narendra Modi struggle to speak correct English. So far, I have came across only 3 or 4 Indian content creators with good English skills. I have been taught "in Wikipedia" instead of "at/on Wikipedia". Real English - medium education in India is something which is lacking. Out of millions of people only a handful has become some one like R. K. Narayan (Although he made umpteen grammatical errors in his short story, An Astrologer's day). A student from India has to face many troubles to get the correct knowledge. I can't blame the students but I blame the teachers. I live in India, but I don't live in India. You can make a nomination at WP:TAFI, they will improve it but I can't sorry. And let me know if you want some funny videos of Indian schools. 101.221.131.45 (talk) 14:45, 27 August 2014 (UTC)
I totally believe you. I once spent a day in Kolhapur, an Indian city of half a million people, where I found almost no-one who could speak any English at all. But in any case this article should not be about how well (or not) Indians can speak English. It should be about English-medium education in India - how many and what type of schools (public? private?) offer English medium instruction - not just an English class in a Hindi-based school, but the school's instruction being given in English. That's what the article should have, and it should be based on Reliable Sources. Thanks for your input; there is certainly nothing wrong with YOUR English skills! --MelanieN (talk) 14:55, 27 August 2014 (UTC)
@MelanieN: Strange! I thought I was logged in. I read in this school. It is a English based school but teachers barely talk in English. They mostly use local regional languages. I can add enough materials in that article but I afraid I may not use neutral tone. Btw I hope to see you again in Kolkata, India. Jim Carter (from public cyber) 15:33, 27 August 2014 (UTC)
Interesting! I have noticed that many schools in India advertise themselves as being "English medium". But I guess that isn't actually true in a lot of cases, then? They claim to use English but actually don't?
I loved Kolkata on a brief visit there. By pure luck we happened to be there during Durga Puja. Going pandal-hopping one night was a memorable experience. --MelanieN (talk) 15:40, 27 August 2014 (UTC)
@MelanieN: No, most of those schools give inappropriate education. And most of the Indian school articles have WP:COI issues. Since they are generally kept, I can't dare to nominate it for discussion until the tone of the article is obvious advert or have copyright issues. They try to attract students by offering false claims like "full English medium school". Just tag {{Cn}} whenever you see such stuffs without reliable source. Yes, they claim to use English but they don't. If it would have happened then India won't have been such a backward country. Wow! It is great to know that you have seen Durga Puja. I invite you again, Jim Carter (from public cyber) 16:17, 27 August 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for the link to your draft. You will have trouble even knowing what to call it; in a quick Google search I found it called Xaviers (without the apostrophe), Xavier's (with the apostrophe), and St. Xavier's. I hope you are enjoying it, it sounded like quite a high-powered academic school from what you said earlier! --MelanieN (talk) 16:57, 27 August 2014 (UTC)
@MelanieN: I didn't wanted to create that one but 4 of my good friends died few months ago. They all are students of our school so I wanted to add those materials in that article. Although I know Wikipedia is not memorial but it seems that incident is notable and has been mentioned here. Actually it is Xavier's English School (see the above source). Only unreliable sources say it as St. Xavier's or Xaviers. Jim Carter (from public cyber) 17:20, 27 August 2014 (UTC)
FOUR of your friends! How awful! I feel really bad for you and your school. I can understand why you want to say something. Although of course the article would need to be mainly about the school, with the news item just an item. --MelanieN (talk) 17:30, 27 August 2014 (UTC)
@MelanieN: Yes, absolutely. Wikipedia is not news. I will add a brief mention about the incident. Jim Carter (from public cyber) 17:43, 27 August 2014 (UTC)
(restoring comments I had deleted)By the way - if Indian education is so bad and English teaching is so deficient - how did YOU learn to speak/write English so well? --MelanieN (talk) 14:32, 28 August 2014 (UTC)
@MelanieN: Can I reply by mail?? It is something which has little relation with Wikipedia so per WP:USERTALK. Jim Carter (from public cyber) 16:12, 28 August 2014 (UTC)
Of course! I'm sorry, that was an inappropriate question to ask in public. You have my email address, right? --MelanieN (talk) 18:38, 28 August 2014 (UTC)
@MelanieN: Yes, I have. I will type the reply tomorrow. I have Chemistry exams 12 hours from now and I haven't completed Vsepr theory yet. Too many chapters, too little time. Jim Carter (from public cyber) 19:03, 28 August 2014 (UTC)(end of restored material)
@MelanieN: Why did you removed your message?? I can't send you the email because I'm currently using restricted connection, that means I can't access anything other than Wikipedia (Wikipedia is available for free) from my phone but emails are not available for free data charges. That is the reason I can't reply. I hope you didn't mind. I will reply ones I get back to my school's computer room. I'm very sorry for the delay. Jim Carter (from public cyber) 14:53, 29 August 2014 (UTC)
Sorry! I thought I should remove it because it was asking you for personal information, which is kind of a no-no here. I'll put it back where it was. No rush to reply, I was just curious! --MelanieN (talk) 16:02, 29 August 2014 (UTC)

@MelanieN: Wow! Amazing work!! It looks so different from what I've created. Thank you. How about a DYK??
BTW YGM. Jim Carter (from public cyber) 08:39, 2 September 2014 (UTC)
No, it's still your article and your research. This was your article before I started on it. I think I only added one reference. The main reason it looks different is the image.
DYK? I don't know. Let me think about it - and maybe take a look at how the process is functioning now. BTW YGM. --MelanieN (talk) 13:43, 2 September 2014 (UTC)
@MelanieN: Thanks for adding that image. Ok. I hope the process is okay now. But you decide if you want to nominate it. (YGM) Jim Carter (from public cyber) 17:20, 2 September 2014 (UTC)

Hi, Jim! I have nominated for DYK that new article that you wrote; I credited it to your "Jim Cartar" primary ID. Nice article! You can see the nomination here: Template:Did you know nominations/''Raj Hath''. --MelanieN (talk) 14:22, 27 September 2014 (UTC)

I see the nomination has already been approved. That was easy! 0;-D
It's in Queue 4. It will be on the front page later today (or maybe tomorrow your time). See the queue for the exact time. --MelanieN (talk) 22:31, 2 October 2014 (UTC)

Adnan Sami

The same POV editor just made a large edit at Adnan Sami. I didn't try to do anything about it, but see what you think; it may be necessary to revert it all. I don't think any of it is reliable. I checked on one claim: "In 2011, Adnan was bestowed with a very distinguished honor, the Glory of India Award, by the Government of India." I could find no evidence that this is true, and plenty of evidence that it isn't. 1) A news search for "Glory of India" and "Adnan" found no results. 2) A Google search for the same found plenty of hits, but all of them are based on Adnan's own say so, not independent reporting. 3) The Glory of India award is not from the government of India, is from the India International Friendship Society, and they don't list him as one of their recipients. So I don't think we can trust anything this editor says. --MelanieN (talk) 17:31, 6 October 2014 (UTC)

Although, I have one question. I see that the earlier version describes him as "a Pakistani singer" and as "a Canadian citizen of Pakistani ancestry". I don't see what that is based on. His father was Pakistani, but he himself seems to have had almost no connection to Pakistan. I prefer the phrase that was inserted by the problem editor: "Born to Naureen and Arshad Sami Khan in London, UK, he is a Canadian citizen of Pakistani, Indian, and Afghan ancestry and currently works and lives in Mumbai, India." If you revert his addition, you might restore that one sentence (including the references provided in the article), and remove "Pakistani" from the lead sentence. From what I see at the talk page, that one phrase might be the reason for some of the arguing. --MelanieN (talk) 18:05, 6 October 2014 (UTC)
And now he has done the same at Arshad Sami Khan. Again I don't think any of the information is reliable. And it is full of peacock terms. I went ahead and reverted to your version in this case. --MelanieN (talk) 17:40, 6 October 2014 (UTC)
@MelanieN: Hmm. I reverted his edit to Adnan Sami article and have left him a warning. I will see if I can do something with the "Early life" section. Btw thank you for the notification. You might also like to watchlist articles listed here. Thanks again, Jim Carter (from public cyber) 06:39, 7 October 2014 (UTC)
He reverted us both. His edits are ungrammatical, and full of peacock words and unsourced claims. I don't know what we can do about him. If we report him to ANI, they will just say it's a content dispute. --MelanieN (talk) 00:27, 8 October 2014 (UTC)
@MelanieN: I noticed that Phil has already reverted those edits from Adnan Sami and has copyedited his father's article. I have reverted his father's article to a previous version as there were addition of unsourced content and removal of few stuffs. I know what to do with this type of disruptive editors. I will leave a final warning on his talkpage, if he continues, I will ask any admin to pass a discretionary sanction under Article probation against him (A sort of article ban) after getting a ban if he continues, he will be blocked indef. Jim Carter 06:24, 8 October 2014 (UTC)
Ah... it seems like Phil has already left a warning. @Phil I think this is a final warning? Jim Carter 06:32, 8 October 2014 (UTC)
Indubitably the final warning.  Philg88 talk 07:32, 8 October 2014 (UTC)

I'm glad you are here, User:Philg88, because I'd like an opinion from both of you: whether I should re-open the (never really settled) debate on the talk page about his ancestry/nationality. Most of the comments on the talk page were about his multiple ancestry and background. But the article calls him "Pakistani" in the lead sentence and refers to him as "of Pakistani ancestry". Looking at the biographical references provided, they show very little connection to Pakistan: his father was Pakistani and his mother Indian, and the problem editor threw in Afghan ancestry as well. The rest of his background is similarly murky. Most of the biographical references say he was born and raised in England, but at least one says he was born in Pakistan and raised in Canada. Many references say he is a Canadian citizen but none of them explain why. (For that matter, the Times of India reference says his father was in real estate! while all the others say his father was the diplomat.) I think his biography may have been deliberately distorted by the singer himself or his publicists. I'm not sure how to approach this or how much clarification we can achieve, but for starters I really question why the lead says "Pakistani". --MelanieN (talk) 14:04, 8 October 2014 (UTC)

I saw what was happening with the putative edit war, MelanieN, so I thought I'd step in and try to help. As to your question, it appears that his father was a Pakistani of Pashtun origin based on the Arshad Sami Khan article so I think it is accurate to say that "he is of Pakistani ancestry" and that's as far as it goes—unless we have another reliable source that describes him as a Pakistani.  Philg88 talk 14:48, 8 October 2014 (UTC)
I appreciate your stepping in; it is still more than I can figure out how to handle. About his ancestry: his mother was Indian, so it would be more accurate to say he is "of Pakistani and Indian ancestry". As for the contradictory information in his bio, I'm afraid it may not be possible to sort it out. --MelanieN (talk) 15:07, 8 October 2014 (UTC)
Hmm. @MelanieN: Is any source says that his mother is an Indian? Along with this I found another issue. It has been said in the infobox that he started his career in 2006 whereas, in the Career it has been claimed from 1986 and another dubious claim in the section "Early life and education" says that he was 9 years old when he composed music. And how does he become a citizen of Canada? Does any source says that? Jim Carter (from public cyber) 15:25, 8 October 2014 (UTC)
(ec) I have a lot of the same questions. About his mother being Indian, I think that is true. There are multiple references confirming that her name was Naureen Sami Khan. This reference says she was Indian.
But I have other questions. For example: How could Sami have been born in England? Sami must have been born around 1970 or earlier; not much later if his first single was released in 1986. (I'm inclined to believe that date.) We know that in the late 1960s Arshad Sami Khan was flying for the Pakistan military. It's also documented that he was aide-de-camp to the presidents of Pakistan at least from 1969 through 1972. So he would have been in Pakistan during the time Adnan was born, not in England. My hunch is that "born in Pakistan and raised in Canada," as one source says, is the true story. But it has been replaced by false information put out by his publicists. (He is trying very hard to be Indian now, so of course he has to play down any Pakistani connection.) I gather he still has problems with his visa, to stay and work in India.[3]
There's still no explanation for Canadian citizenship. I don't know any way to verify or prove any of this and it's probably hopeless to try. But it's frustrating. --MelanieN (talk) 16:03, 8 October 2014 (UTC)

User:Philg88 and Jim: He just did it again. Copy-pasted one of his previous edits, or some other source, complete with [16] type references, which some well meaning person converted to {{cn}}. At this point he has definitely become disruptive. He ignores warnings and insists that his version is right because it's the way Sami wants it. Massive ownership issues, combined with WP:IDHT. Shall I take him to ANI, or would one of you rather do it? --MelanieN (talk) 23:17, 8 October 2014 (UTC)

Oh, and I see he posted a long explanation on both of your talk pages. Some of the things he wants to correct are probably right, but it can't be done the way he is doing it, by pasting in his own version. He needs to point out individual things that need correcting, and if they pan out, have them done one at a time, preferably by other people, not him. --MelanieN (talk) 23:21, 8 October 2014 (UTC)
@MelanieN: Taking it to ANI seems the next logical step with the emphasis on SPA, COI and disruptive editing rather than the content issue. Probably better if you do it so that an uninvolved admin can take a look. I'll keep an eye on it. Best,  Philg88 talk 05:26, 9 October 2014 (UTC)
@Philg88 and MelanieN: I've taken this to WP:ANI. Feel free to join the discussion. Although I have seen his message on my talk page but after a final warning, he continued, which forced me to take this case at ANI. Jim Carter 07:54, 9 October 2014 (UTC)
I just did a cleanup further back than you did. I may have accidentally removed some good material you entered when you made a less drastic cleanup a little earlier. If so, I apologize; pls restore what you think is appropriate. DGG ( talk ) 13:34, 9 October 2014 (UTC)
@DGG: Thanks for the message. I will see what I can do but will wait until that editor get blocked. It seems that you have given him a last warning per WP:BLPKINDNESS (I think) but I'm quite sure that it might not do much favour as he ignore warning messages. I will start with a total clean up only after he stops because he always restores his version (Ownership). Look at Arshad Sami Khan article. It is full of peacock terms. I haven't edited that page as it will be in vain. Btw I will also like you to watchlist another article, Rajpal Yadav, it is in a similar condition. Thanks again, Jim Carter (from public cyber) 14:17, 9 October 2014 (UTC)
Just so you know, I reported the user ‪User:Raajpalyadav.webmaster‬ to Wikipedia:Usernames for administrator attention. --MelanieN (talk) 18:31, 9 October 2014 (UTC)
Thanks Melanie, but under which criteria you reported? Misleading or promotional? It is possible that the editor is the subject itself. I have left him a note to see WP:BLP/H which might help him. Btw it seems like you are giving a last try to explain Peter Downings. Good! I appreciate it! I hope he will understand. I will go ahead and will do some clean up tomorrow. Let's see what happens. I wish Peter D. understands. Cheers, Jim Carter (from public cyber) 19:18, 9 October 2014 (UTC)
Promotional - the name implies that they represent the subject, plus their editing pattern is promotional.
My "last try" with Peter Downings didn't do much. He posted a long reply on my talk page, basically repeating his same comments at great length, about how upset Sami is, and how we should just let him write the article as he wants. With a long dissertation about Marie Antionette of all things! I tried one more time to get him to post his suggested corrections on the article's talk page. We'll see. I'm not holding my breath. --MelanieN (talk) 19:55, 9 October 2014 (UTC)
Good thing I didn't hold my breath. He posted again at Arshad Sami Khan. [4] Same routine, pasting in his own version. I reported it to the still-open item at ANI. --MelanieN (talk) 22:44, 9 October 2014 (UTC)
@MelanieN: you are refering to a difference which is before DGG warned him. Peter has not edited anything. His last edit was to your talk page. I have forwarded your message to DGG's talk page without checking the diff. After half an hour I posted the message, I checked the diff and was surprised that it was not a recent edit. Jim Carter (from public cyber) 19:03, 10 October 2014 (UTC)
Yes, I was wrong about that. I was corrected at the ANI discussion and struck my comment there. I guess I just misread the history. --MelanieN (talk) 20:09, 10 October 2014 (UTC)
BTW the Rajpal Yadav vandal has been indef blocked for spamming. They will probably come back under another name, if so we should watch for evidence of sockpuppetry / block evasion. --MelanieN (talk) 20:20, 10 October 2014 (UTC)
Thank you, Melanie. I will watch that article. Thanks again, Jim Carter 11:22, 11 October 2014 (UTC)

Calcutta Leather Complex

Hi, Jim! Take a look at the article Calcutta Leather Complex. Should this subject be deleted, expanded, or left alone? The article was originally much longer, but most of that content was deleted as copyvio and POV. I tagged what was left of it for speedy deletion but that was declined. Then somebody else tagged it with another CSD but that was also declined. Since then I have looked at it and decided it might be worth an article after all. I added a little clarification to the lead. I thought about expanding it but I am having trouble searching for sources. What do you think about it? --MelanieN (talk) 15:06, 16 October 2014 (UTC)

@MelanieN: Okay, the article is a mixture of two different notability wings, WP:ORG and WP:NGEO. The title appears to be an article about a company but it doesn't actually mention anything related to a company. It mentions about the area it acquired. Now, in the current state it fails our general notability standards. According to our policy we should not have article on subjects which are not verifiable. I haven't found any reliable source by which we can expand. But the company actually exists. Since it is a mixture of ORG and NGEO so CSD A7 is not applicable. But you can either take it to AfD or you can turn it into a redirect to Economy of Kolkata followed by a brief mention about the company. Cheers, Jim Carter (from public cyber) 19:56, 16 October 2014 (UTC)

Do me a favor?

Hi, Jim! I just nominated an article for deletion, but I am not going to be available over the next week to monitor the discussion. Could you keep an eye on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/The New York International School‎ and its parent article for me? It will probably not need any action or responses, but just in case it does - or in case somebody removes the AfD tag from the article or does something else that needs handling. Thanks! --MelanieN (talk) 00:44, 25 October 2014 (UTC)

No worries, Melanie. Enjoy your tour. :) Watchlisted. Jim Carter 04:45, 25 October 2014 (UTC)

So

Jim if you wish you can delete that oppose on your nomination, and see what will happen. Socks votes are disregarded. Hafspajen (talk) 00:23, 25 October 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the note, @Hafspajen:. It seems that Armbrust already strikedout that !vote. Actually, I have also asked a checkUser to investigate him see here. Anyway, is that picture is too bad to get FP status? I don't see any problem. Did you? Jim Carter 04:39, 25 October 2014 (UTC)
No, the problem was just - this user. I would remove that vote altogether - no need to stay stricken or not, just undo it or take that off from the nomination. Our other pictures on the subject File:Taj Mahal Sunset Edit1.jpg are taken by Muhammad, and he made lots and lots of gorgious pictures to us and he is very talented. So it is understandable that he prefers his own version, nothing weird with that. But let the others say what they think. You might want to check throug |->Muhammads own uploads HERE, I think it may hide one or two futute FP among them too... oops that was already a FP. Actually it would be wise to check that - I mean if BOTH those are socks - the previous account was also way too experienced. Hafspajen (talk) 13:23, 25 October 2014 (UTC)
@Hafspajen: If you ask me File:Taj Mahal Sunset Edit1.jpg is a nice picture but it also has some problems. The marbles looks brownish which not actually the real color of Taj Mahal. I can understand it is a sunset image, but this image reflect a totally different look of Taj Mahal. And people who are unaware of Taj Mahal will confuse. So, comparing both the images, I think my nomination is a better one.
Hmm. I think Coat of many colors have a much long history than we know. I doubt he is a blocked user returing. Jim Carter 14:44, 25 October 2014 (UTC)
I am sure he has a much long history than we know. And yes, - Taj Mahal does looks different in sunset, sunrise - at night, and so on - it is actually quite famous for it. It has a very special glow, so many different pictures about it is quite in order. Hafspajen (talk) 14:49, 25 October 2014 (UTC)
Now please remove that comment altogether or it is stucked. Hafspajen (talk) 14:58, 25 October 2014 (UTC)
@Hafspajen: feel free to remove it yourself. Cheers, Jim Carter 16:53, 25 October 2014 (UTC)
Fixed. Hafspajen (talk) 17:00, 25 October 2014 (UTC)

Hello Jim Carter - Public. This message is part of a mass mailing to people who appear active in reviewing articles for creation submissions. First of all, thank you for taking part in this important work! I'm sorry this message is a form letter – it really was the only way I could think of to covey the issue economically. Of course, this also means that I have not looked to see whether the matter is applicable to you in particular.

The issue is in rather large numbers of copyright violations ("copyvios") making their way through AfC reviews without being detected (even when easy to check, and even when hallmarks of copyvios in the text that should have invited a check, were glaring). A second issue is the correct method of dealing with them when discovered.

If you don't do so already, I'd like to ask for your to help with this problem by taking on the practice of performing a copyvio check as the first step in any AfC review. The most basic method is to simply copy a unique but small portion of text from the draft body and run it through a search engine in quotation marks. Trying this from two different paragraphs is recommended. (If you have any question about whether the text was copied from the draft, rather than the other way around (a "backwards copyvio"), the Wayback Machine is very useful for sussing that out.)

If you do find a copyright violation, please do not decline the draft on that basis. Copyright violations need to be dealt with immediately as they may harm those whose content is being used and expose Wikipedia to potential legal liability. If the draft is substantially a copyvio, and there's no non-infringing version to revert to, please mark the page for speedy deletion right away using {{db-g12|url=URL of source}}. If there is an assertion of permission, please replace the draft article's content with {{subst:copyvio|url=URL of source}}.

Some of the more obvious indicia of a copyvio are use of the first person ("we/our/us..."), phrases like "this site", or apparent artifacts of content written for somewhere else ("top", "go to top", "next page", "click here", use of smartquotes, etc.); inappropriate tone of voice, such as an overly informal tone or a very slanted marketing voice with weasel words; including intellectual property symbols (™,®); and blocks of text being added all at once in a finished form with no misspellings or other errors.

I hope this message finds you well and thanks again you for your efforts in this area. Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 02:20, 18 November 2014 (UTC).

AfD

Hi. When closing AfD as 'redirect' please remember to add the appropriate 'R from...' template to the redirect page so that it populates the related category and leaves the right message. In the case of schools for example, it would be: {{R from school}}. Cheers, Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 11:04, 29 November 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the note, Kudpung. While I add such tags after merging articles but I was not aware that templates like {{R from school}} exist. Anyway, thanks again for the note. Have a nice day! Jim Carter (from public cyber) 11:31, 29 November 2014 (UTC)

Abhishek Bachchan

OK, looks like your draft is almost ready. One suggestion: in the lead you quote a review "Abhishek came across as a fine actor who lived up to his family name." You need to explain that. Which means there should be something in the lead about his father and any other family members who are actors.

I wonder too, how old was he when he first began to be in movies? Was he a child, or a teenager? Because I read something about the director of Paa wondering if he was mature enough. And I know that the children of actors often start to act themselves at a very young age.

For a DYK hook, I am thinking about something along the lines of "...that in the film Paa ("Father"), actor Abhishek Bachchan portrays a father, while his real-life father, actor Amitabh Bachchan, plays the role of his 13-year-old son." I will add some supporting material to your article, explaining and referencing how it is possible that his father plays the part of his son. --MelanieN (talk) 19:19, 9 December 2014 (UTC)

@Melanie Welcome back! I was feeling a bit well today so I just logged in. Okay. I will try to explain about his family but I will do it in footnotes as I don't want to add it in the lead. It's already a long lead.
According to sources he began working in movies with the film Refugee in 2000. At that time he was not a child nor a teenager. Some rumor says that he worked in the movie Ajooba as a child actor. But I couldn't find any sources says that so I removed it. Where did you read something about the Paa director? And did you notice that Paa is not directed by Abhishek but he was the producer?
The hook sounds good. I will be more than happy if you can add some supporting material to the article. Thank you very much! Jim Carter 09:37, 11 December 2014 (UTC)
About the child/teenager question, I was just wondering, that's all. This [5] is the article I will use to explain about the father-son casting. --MelanieN (talk) 15:07, 11 December 2014 (UTC)
@MelanieN: Good source! Do you have sometime to do it now? As I'm now online so I can merge it and then you can nominate it. Btw is it possible to history merge? It will keep the record, how we improved the article. Thoughts? Jim Carter (from public cyber) 15:31, 11 December 2014 (UTC)
Not right now, maybe later today. History merge? I don't know what you mean by that; you will simply be pasting your new version into the existing article, won't you? --MelanieN (talk) 15:49, 11 December 2014 (UTC)
Are you aware of WP:History merge? While I suppose to simply past my version into the article but all the edit histories of my draft will get deleted. So, I thought it would be a good option. What you think? Jim Carter (from public cyber) 16:01, 11 December 2014 (UTC)
You want to preserve the history of your draft? I'm not sure why; you are pretty much the only one who has contributed to it, and the end result is what matters. If I create something in my sandbox and then paste it into a new or existing article, I don't worry about the history of my sandbox work. I do know that history merging requires an admin, and that even many admins say it is too complicated for them to do. If I were you I would forget about a history merge. --MelanieN (talk) 16:24, 11 December 2014 (UTC)

@MelanieN: Okay no problem. It was just a thought. I will just paste my version. Thanks! Jim Carter (from public cyber) 16:38, 11 December 2014 (UTC)

OK, I have added the material to the draft about the father-son casting. Let me know when it goes live, and I will proceed with a DYK nomination. --MelanieN (talk) 00:18, 12 December 2014 (UTC)

Bot automation at Wikipedia:Today's articles for improvement

Greetings WikiProject TAFI members!

Over the past two weeks, there has been extensive discussion on introducing bot automation to assist with maintenance of the Today's Articles for Improvement project. A bot has now been approved for trial and will carry out the weekly duties. The bots first run will occur around 00:00, 22 November 2015 (UTC) (midnight on Sunday).

If you have been assisting any of the weekly maintenance tasks, please refrain from doing so this week. The bot needs to be tested and proven it can do the job, and it only gets one chance per week. The tasks will include:

Updating the accomplishments and archiving selections is still done manually, along with daily tasks such as adding approved entries to the articles for improvement page. These will become automated in the near future.

We hope the bot proves to serve well, and by carrying out the routine housekeeping tasks we can boost the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the project. MusikBot thanks you for your service in helping with the weekly tasks in the past, and for your cooperation during this trial period :)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. For the Election committee, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 17:06, 24 November 2015 (UTC)
