Hello, I'm Zackmann08. Thank you for your recent contributions to Philadelphia Convention Hall and Civic Center. I noticed that when you added the image to the infobox, you added it as a thumbnail. In the future, please do not use thumbnails when adding images to an infobox (see WP:INFOBOXIMAGE). What does this mean? Well in the infobox, when you specify the image you wish to use, instead of doing it like this:

|image=[[File:SomeImage.jpg|thumb|Some image caption]]

Instead just supply the name of the image. So in this case you can simply do:

|image=SomeImage.jpg.

There will then be a separate parameter for the image caption such as |caption=Some image caption. Please note that this is a generic form message I am leaving on your page because you recently added a thumbnail to an infobox. The specific parameters for the image and caption may be different for the infobox you are using! Please consult the Template page for the infobox being used to see better documentation. Thanks! Thanks, @Zackmann08:. Actually I already knew how to do it properly in Source Editor. I assumed that learning to learn how to use Visual Editor to change that part would be very easy. Indeed, after pasting in the material given in Commons, the box looked okay to me. Apparently the proper method is more complicated, requiring pasting the filename and then retyping the caption. Are you interested in the Electrical history of Morningside Heights

Somehow, I thought that was going to be a red-link.

If you are interested, I ran into the following [1], [2] and immediately wanted to put this intriguing info into the Morningside Heights article. Nothing there at all related, though. Well, it might not be of general interest, but I thought if anybody would have an interest in this you would. If you want some help including somewhere it as an external video, please let me know, but note there is a tab for a transcript.

My interest in this website has more to do with the videos than anything else - I like videos in Wikipedia. It was a pretty odd website though - and I just looked at it for the 1st time in several years. They seem to have some of the kinks worked out now.

If this doesn't interest you, it's likely that it won't interest many others (except me) so please let it drop in that case.

Thanks, this topic indeed tickles my fancy, especially remembering my father's tale of the electrician at NYU who repaired a fluorescent desk lamp that had been killed by DC, and tested his work by plugging it into the office outlet, which of course was DC. Phht! A quick Google search fails to find citable reports about Washington Heights, just this one about the final Midtown switchoff of DC by Con Ed. Oral History, in this case the reminiscences of a witness ignorant of technical matters, is great fun but a wobbly support for an article. On an electrotechnical note, it hadn't occurred to me that TV makers wouldn't provide a way for DC to feed the horizontal sweep and driver circuits to drive the flyback transformer. I doubt I'm going to find any useful refs about that, but I must find time for more intensive searching to involve possibly relevant topics such as Columbia Physics Dept and Michael Pupin. I will say that I was surprised to find the Walter Murch considers himself technically out of touch with such matters. Hey I'm not sure how easy it is for you to get to Yonkers, but this nice 1927 art deco building really should get a bunch of photographs before they tear it down: link. Hmm, Firehouse 1 is pretty easy to reach at 40°56′1.5″N 73°53′41.5″W. I took a couple minutes to locate it in Google Earth because it's not on Palisade Avenue but a block south at John and New School Streets. Anyway Sunday looks like a nice sunny day to take the subway most the way and bike the rest. It's facing west with a parking lot across the street, so there's no need to wake up early. If strong enough, I'll bike home through Van Cortlandt Park and Harlem River Speedway or something. I need the exercise, having biked little more than a hundred miles since December. Thanks for the demolition alert, @Ɱ:.

Quickly getting lost in Yonkers, I had a pleasantly interesting day and got thoroughly worn out even though I did only 10.5 miles biking. I immediately uploaded the cellphone picture; the ones from the real camera will be later. Dooring/Avoidance/Dutch Reach : Corrections, Updates re: DR method & advantage: History, Still taught in NL; Coinage certain, & not b/c "NL has a lot of cyclistists"

Dear Jim Henderson

Greetings again. One year ago you assisted in digesting my 'treatise' on the Dutch Reach into a sub-section of Dooring, which replaced Door Zone as the main subject -- all for which I am most grateful.

I have revisited the entry now, under Dooring / Avoidance, and drafted and annotated a corrective update.

As the Dooring/Avoidance section has apparently had its problems and been blocked or restricted, I myself cannot, and do not wish to alter it without it going through appropriate vetting.

I have placed my draft text (10/22/17) in my sandbox. It appears below the aforementioned 'treatise'! with the subject/headline as given above.

May I ask you to take a look at it and help it reach the appropriate Wiki pro's for Cycling or Dooring that they may take a comb or axe to it?

I have included bracketed comments as supplementary explanation for my draft content.

I have entirely refrained from citing my Dutch Reach Project website's pages, though were you to browse the site today (dutchreach.org) I believe you will find it comprehensive and authoritative - as much so as one neither Dutch nor Dutch-speaking might assemble.

Should there be correspondence or collaboraton between the cycling editors of the English Wikipedia with those of the Dutch Wikipedia, it might be quite valuable in both directions. In particular to learn more of the back history of the far hand countermeasure, its introduction and eventual incorporation into driving instructor standards. For there is controversy about it both inside and outside Holland - and Denmark.

For during this year of research and international interest, I have found that knowledge of the Stop de Kindermoord years of the 1970s are no longer known or remembered my many Dutch citizens, including some cycling and transport specialists. But the documented reports I included by cycling historian Ruth Oldenziel, Boston Globe reporter Martine Powers, & RoSPA UK & RijlesHulp.nl's videos, cannot be denied.

Oh, wow, @Mcha6677:, this looks like something that will require me to think. Alas, for the coming week my thinking powers will be soaked up by the photos coming from WP:Meetup/NYC/OHNY, and somewhat by teaching newbies at Bronx Botanical Garden or maybe City Tech. While dodging doors in the Bronx today I met a photographer whom I hope to recruit as a WP editor. So, I must hope the good folks at WP:WikiProject Cycling or someone else will be able to help you. Nov 1, 12:41 am - update on 10/22 attempted sandbox contribution Jim, Turns out the text and commentary I posted to my sandbox on Oct 22 was apparently deleted by an algorithm which determined either I was violating copyright or there was some 'mirror site' issue. KGirlTrucker81 sent me notification of this action or was in herself in some way involved in the decision. The (presumed) algorithm censor apparently doesn't provide documentation of exactly what portions of my text and commentary is allegedly in violation - and as 'it' threatens to permanently ban me if I re-post the same material (whole or in part?) I am in a quandary as to how to proceed. I

I sent KGirlTrucker81 a Talk note today requesting reconsideration and am awaiting her response/action. I encouraged her to contact you to confirm I am legit and am a worthy source of knowledge on this subject.

 As the entry for Dooring / Avoidance has at some point been locked - and this may account for some part of this complication - I am neither allowed, nor would I want to make significant changes without the cycling editors vetting my claims and citations which support them. 

I welcome any advice or help you might provide - but you might also just wish to wait and see what KGirlTrucker81 does or explains to me re: my text. M

ind you, several things I take issue with in the current version are merely about provenance and (my own!!) motivation & logic behind the Dutch Reach meme, and about the far hand reach's place in NL road culture. These issues are but dressing on the countermeasure itself, and not particularly important except as interesting background for the curious or skeptical. But I provide documentation for 'my' version of events, vs what's currently posted there on those points which are unsubstantiated claims & inferences (& which I find erroneous or laughable!).

(btw the District of Columbia it about to start a November-long far hand reach anti-dooring and road sharing safety campaign starting Nov 1, and calling the maneuver the 'DC Reach'! - adding to the confusion!) You can find this development under New & News on the DR website dutchreach.org )

Bottom line, I'd like to find a way to show you what I've written and let the cycling editorial group slice, dice & inspect it, and add what they find valid and useful.

October 30 session

Hi Jim! Thank you for your email with advice for our edit-a-thon at Berkeley College. We do have the necessary infrastructure ready to go. It is difficult to project attendance as our program attendance varies widely. We can expect people to be "drifting" in and out over the 1.5 hours, though. Since it is a short time frame, we have pre-selected pages which are marked as needing updating in some way. We will be encouraging students to look at what is marked as needing attention and talking about how to improve the articles based on those markings. The amount of time staying is not a problem, @Samanthack:, for an old retired mechanic. One hour or four; it's more a matter of getting there than how long. Except, we seldom do these things so close to my home; just a trip across Times Square and a bit more; not like tomorrow afternoon's session at the City Tech library on Jay Street.

Thus far, I don't know of any other experienced editors who plan to show up on Monday. Usually we have a good speaker or two, plus time to lecture on technical matters, but we can wing it. When all are logged in, a short speech can address things like who is Wikipedia and WP:Pillars of Wikipedia and how to run away from WP:Content disputes and what is WP:Notable. Maybe not all those points. Then comes WP:User page and start doing the things on your to-edit list. The rest is coaching, like how to insert a ref and suchlike.

Another thing that sometimes happens is to play a few introductory videos on a projector, but mostly the videos are not very good and I haven't identified the ones that are not a waste of scarce time. If some of my colleagues are watching this conversation and can suggest something, I would be pleased even if it doesn't happen due to no projector or too little time or whatever. We do have a short introduction planned about Wikipedia and the 5 Pillars, but I'm interested to hear your thoughts on content disputes. Our goal is to give students a better understanding of the Wikipedia environment and have them complete light edits to articles with our instruction. @Samanthack: incidentally it's not necessary to ping me on my own talk page. That's for other talk pages that I might not be watching. Last couple days have been busier than expected, but I ought to expect that. Today was biking 34 km (20 miles), snapping pictures on the way.

For such limited time, we can use some of it to mention Wikipedia:Dispute resolution and to say, if someone undoes your hard work, let it go and find something less controversial until you have some experience that can give perspective. Hundreds of edits, for example. More of our minutes should go to the WP:Watchlist. Also I have found that audiences like it when I explain who Wikipedia editors are, for example how I am typical and how not, and what kinds of career path, or hobby path, are commonplace.

After a few minutes of speeches it gets down to editing. Usually I say to make sure the Wikipedia:VisualEditor is enabled. When tutoring one on one, I may talk them through enabling the Wiki markup editor, which is better for some jobs such as pictures and tables. But mostly, once they find something they want to do, it's a matter of them calling for help and old-timers responding, looking over their shoulder, saying "Yeah, that looks okay" or "no, not so good" and explaining.

ArbCom 2017 election voter message

Hello, Jim.henderson. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Wednesday December 13, 7pm: WikiWednesday Salon and Skill-Share NYC

You are invited to join the Wikimedia NYC community for our monthly "WikiWednesday" evening salon (7-9pm) and knowledge-sharing workshop at Babycastles gallery by 14th Street / Union Square in Manhattan. We will include a look at the organization and planning for our chapter, and expanding volunteer roles for both regular Wikipedia editors and new participants. We will also follow up on plans for recent and upcoming edit-a-thons, museum and library projects, education initiatives, and other outreach activities. We welcome the participation of our friends from the Free Culture movement and from all educational and cultural institutions interested in developing free knowledge projects. After the main meeting, pizza/chicken/vegetables and refreshments and video games in the gallery!
