E-Mail

[edit]

Hi Jidan, could you perhaps let me have your E-mail address or drop me a line? I'd like to ask you a question. Thanks! Lukas (T.|@) 08:14, 21 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ah

[edit]

I stand corrected. But at the time of Alhazen's birth, Iraq was part of Persia. —Khoikhoi 01:05, 29 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm. Yes I agree that Muslim is a good compromise, it worked out well on the al-Khwarizmi page, with the exception of one guy who claims he wasn't Muslim or Islamic. (????) Some users never fail to amaze me. I believe that Mani is a lot more reasonable than some users, it's just the extremists (from both sides) that don't want to negotiate. —Khoikhoi 03:46, 29 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
BTW, check out WP:NPOV#Undue weight. (when one side is more commonly accepted than another it should be treated so in the article) I propose something like "Although most sources state he was Arab, there are many that describe him as Persian". How does that sound? —Khoikhoi 03:48, 29 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I think that's good, I'll ask Mani what he thinks. —Khoikhoi 03:56, 29 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, you can go ahead and change the instances of "Muslim" to "Islamic" when an article mentions Alhazen if you want. —Khoikhoi 03:59, 29 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I have another proposal: "His ethnic background is not clear, although most sources state he was Arab, there are many that describe him as Persian." I think many is more accurate than some. —Khoikhoi 04:03, 29 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You have been temporarily blocked for violation of the three-revert rule. Please feel free to return after the block expires, but also please make an effort to discuss your changes further in the future. Wikibofh(talk) 14:05, 29 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you block me? According to Wikipedia:Three-revert rule: The policy states that an editor must not perform more than three reversions, in whole or in part, on a single Wikipedia article within a 24 hour period. I reverted only three times after a first compormise was made. And even if I voilated 3rr, why was I not never warned before? I also put my best effort in discussing this. The article as it is now is very disputed. After explaining to me why I was blocked, can you please put a dispute tag on Geber article? jidan 15:20, 29 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why didn't you inform me that there was such a discussion about me, since you are the one who blocked me? How am I suppose to take part in the discussion if I am blocked? Totally uncool and unfair of you ;-(. jidan 18:31, 29 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The best way to avoide this is to make it like it is. It is disputed, even in Literature. Persia is old an has a long tradition, but a majotity of people in Iran are now not persians, but members of small minoritys. So to find out which minority or majority Geber was part will be a task without end. So try to comfort both groups and point out that it is DISPUTED. I will try to gether more info, but for now.... --Stone 22:00, 29 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

License tagging for Image:Ibn haithem poststamp pk.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Ibn haithem poststamp pk.jpg. Wikipedia gets hundreds of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

Geber

[edit]

First off, I don't recall spamming people's talk pages. Second off, I never saw you as "the bad guy". Thirdly, I've decided to not get involved in these issues anymore. Personally, I don't think we should really care what ethnicity these people are. They were famous for being mathematicians/scientists, not for being Persian or Arab. —Khoikhoi 01:11, 4 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Arabic in Spanish

[edit]

Hi Jiddan!

I have seen your recent edit in "List of Arabic words in Spanish". I would appreciate your help in a more thorough article to which the latter will have to be (eventually) merged. Arabic influence on the Spanish language. As an arabic speaker you could help me with the transliteration into latin. I dont know which system to use and all the words have to be checked! By the way its pretty hard finding all the words of arabic origin... I havent found any full list anywhere. Apparently there are over 4000 although i have still less than 1500 so far.

It will be good to have a native arabic speaker helping me out

Thanks!

--Guzman ramirez 17:20, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cool Jidan!

Well I am slowly going through the meanings of the words on the article Arabic influence on the Spanish language. I would appreciate it if you could put this article on your watch list and check the Arabic. I get most of the etymologies from www.rae.es. However my computer doesnt recognize some of the letters which appear as squares and funny symbols. Could you have a look and try to fix it? I am also using and Arab/English dictionary but its quite hard for me since I dont have much practice in using arabic dictionaries...

For example, I wrote:

  1. aceche: copper, iron or zinc sulphate. From Arabic zāǧ.

Is it Zaj?? I dont know...

Anyways I had no idea that my language was so influenced by Arabic. I started becoming interested in the subject and now I have set out to make a proper article on the issue!

Shukran jidan, Jidan!

I wondered why you thought "Islamic" more accurate than "Muslim". --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 10:44, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Becasue Islamic is not a relgious term, but rather a chronological term or Era term. Its similiar to Hellenistic. This means that even jews or christians can be labeled Islamic, although there are not muslims. Please correct me if i'm wrong. jidan 18:51, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know why I missed this, but my reply is very belated I'm afraid. yes, you're wrong on this; "Islamic" means "of Islam", and refers to the religion. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 21:36, 2 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Merging of Articles

[edit]

Yes there are 2 articles. I have said it loads of time on the talk page and have told you here twice!! I think the shorter article should be merged into the longer one which is more methodical and complete. Have a look at it. There is nothing to say on the historical background of arabic influence on Spanish...certainly not enough for an article.--Guzman ramirez 22:03, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It doesn't matter who it belongs to, it's still a personal website on a University server and that's not a verifiable source according to WP:VERIFY. Please read WP:NPA as well, because I don't appreciate your judgmental tone and personal attacks. --ManiF 13:14, 10 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It's not a matter of "disagreement", whatever sentence you are adding, you'd need to cite a verifiable source in accordance with Wikipedia:No original research and Wikipedia:Verifiability. --ManiF 13:25, 10 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That's because I had none of those articles on my watch-list, now that you brought my attention to them, they have been taken care of. --ManiF 14:38, 10 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Userboxes that you may be interested in

[edit]

Hi, I created 2 user boxes (one pertaining to ancient Yemen and the other to the Arab world), have a look here. --Inahet 07:07, 2 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I like the newer image better. But the userbox should be smaller, and I think the background color of the info box should be something other than plain white. Also I thought about making it into templates, but I came across this at WP:UBX: One thing that is reasonably clear is that, at the present time, you should not make your userboxes into new templates. ? --Inahet 04:24, 3 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I think the size is just too big, but I really don't know how to change it. Can you change it please? :D Also, I have created a temporary Wikiproject, and I was waiting for more users to sign on.But thanks for creating it anway. --Inahet 15:32, 3 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re:2 Questions

[edit]

Just one answer. "No" for both. You can actually give out any award without being an administrator. Sorry I haven't added much to Yemen content yet, but I want to flesh out Aksumite & pre-Aksumite history first, and then I can add the overlaps to the respective Yemeni articles.

It's an honor to accept this barnstarfrom you Jizan, though I must admit that I feel as though I've not added enough information to deserve this! Never fear, though. I'll be sure to keep adding to Pre-Islamic Yemeni history (check out GDRT for some relatively recently added information regarding ancient Ethio-Yemeni involvement). Although I will gladly accept the barnstar award, I still wish that I could do a lot more so I would feel a lot more deserving of the barnstar. I also appreciate your hard work and so I give you this barnstar.

Jidan is awarded a barnstar for his excellent contributions to articles relating to Yemen. Inahet
Actually, I was meaning to give you one for quite some time, especially for the work you have done for the history of Yemen and the Yemen Wikiproject. But, I removed the part that makes you feel uncomfortable. --Inahet 13:58, 16 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Why should "...and for always maintaining a cool composure in difficult situations." make me feel uncomfortable? LOL Jidan 12:15, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well, you don't agree with it, right? So I removed that part. But I still think you fare better than I in difficult situations :-). --Inahet 05:42, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jidan, thank you for welcoming me to the Yemen wiki project. I am mainly concerned in the Sabean history, and also the state of Yemen when it was conquered by Aksum. "rvv" History of Yemen

[edit]

Perhaps you are new to Wikipedia, and are unfamilar with Wikipedia:Vandalism. Vandalism is willful destruction of a Wikipedia article, not good faith edits you disagree with. I added the stampede because I find it notable. The mention of the USS Cole bombing was already there. I did not violate WP:3RR because I reverted Inahet once. In the future, do not refer to other users' edits as vandalism when you simply disagree with them. False accusations of vandalism verge on personal attacks. Thanks for the holiday greeting. Are Yemenis going to celebrate the eid on Sunday or Monday? Also, thanks for the song, unfortunately I don't know the words :(, but I guess I should start memorizing :-D. --Inahet 00:51, 22 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yemenis here in the U.S. are confused as to which day is Eid, some say Monday, some say Sunday, some even say Tuesday ~_~. And they want to follow Yemen, when it would have been easier (and more logical) to start Ramadan and celebrate eid on the days that other Muslims in American have and are going to, respectively.
I think I have heard that song before when I was much younger... we have a lot of Yemeni music tapes so I'm sure it is on one of them. Thanks again for the song, I appreciate it. --Inahet 01:18, 22 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Geber

[edit]

I never said he was a liar, I just think the sources have been misinterpreted. For example, where is the word "Yemen" at User:Inahet/Holmyard? Cheers, Khoikhoi 05:05, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, but you are essentially putting words in Holmyard's mouth. He never said Yemen, he said "South Arabia". Since we've cited him as a source, we have to say what he says. WP:V says that "the threshold for inclusion in Wikipedia is verifiability, not truth". Furthermore, none of the links on the Geber article have any mention of Yemen. None of them. If the man indeed lived there, we would have at least one link that said he did. They all mention Kufa, but of course Kufa is in Iraq... Khoikhoi 06:13, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mashallah

[edit]

Persians are not Arabs. Please stop adding Mashallah to that list of Arab scientists. Calling a Persian an Arab could earn you a harsh retribution from many Persians. Besides that, Persians are ethnically, linguistically, and historically different from Arabs. Bottom line: stop adding his name. --Shamir1 05:36, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
