If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Jennifer Kristen Howell, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Hello Jhofferman. The nature of your edits gives the impression you have an undisclosed financial stake in promoting a topic, but you have not complied with Wikipedia's mandatory paid editing disclosure requirements. Paid advocacy is a category of conflict of interest (COI) editing that involves being compensated by a person, group, company or organization to use Wikipedia to promote their interests. Undisclosed paid advocacy is prohibited by our policies on neutral point of view and what Wikipedia is not, and is an especially serious type of COI; the Wikimedia Foundation regards it as a "black hat" practice akin to black-hat search-engine optimization.

Paid advocates are very strongly discouraged from direct article editing, and should instead propose changes on the talk page of the article in question if an article exists. If the article does not exist, paid advocates are extremely strongly discouraged from attempting to write an article at all. At best, any proposed article creation should be submitted through the articles for creation process, rather than directly.

Regardless, if you are receiving or expect to receive compensation for your edits, broadly construed, you are required by the Wikimedia Terms of Use to disclose your employer, client and affiliation. You can post such a mandatory disclosure to your user page at User:Jhofferman. The template {{Paid}} can be used for this purpose – e.g. in the form: {{paid|user=Jhofferman|employer=InsertName|client=InsertName}}. If I am mistaken – you are not being directly or indirectly compensated for your edits – please state that in response to this message. Otherwise, please provide the required disclosure. In either case, do not edit further until you answer this message. PRAXIDICAE🌈 19:14, 14 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

As previously advised, your edits give the impression you have a financial stake in promoting a topic, but you have not complied with Wikipedia's mandatory paid editing disclosure requirements. You were asked to cease editing until you responded by either stating that you are not being directly or indirectly compensated for your edits, or by complying with the mandatory requirements under the Wikimedia Terms of Use that you disclose your employer, client and affiliation. Again, you can post such a disclosure on your user page at User:Jhofferman, and the template {{Paid}} can be used for this purpose – e.g. in the form: {{paid|user=Jhofferman|employer=InsertName|client=InsertName}}. Please respond before making any other edits to Wikipedia. PRAXIDICAE🌈 19:46, 14 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I wanted to deal with the speedy deletion issue first. I was in fact compensated for writing the article and I will attend to the disclosure right now. As we know, ignorance is no excuse, but I was unaware of the requirement. Apologies. Jhofferman (talk) 19:50, 14 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
{{Connected contributor (paid)|User1=JHofferman|U1-employer=Jennifer Howell|U1-client=Jennifer Howell|U1-otherlinks=Insert relevant links, such as relevant affiliations, disclosures, article drafts written by paid editors, or diffs showing paid contributions being added to articles.}} Jhofferman (talk) 20:03, 14 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
you need to add this to your userpage along with a link of where you advertise your services. This applies to each article and each client. PRAXIDICAE🌈 20:05, 14 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Done Jhofferman (talk) 20:28, 14 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see a link to where you advertise your services. Please follow the instructions here. PRAXIDICAE🌈 20:30, 14 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry you have to deal with a brain-dead correspondent. Link added. Let me know if I screwed anything else up. I just saw that I specifically mention Wikipedia in my profile, which I last edited some years ago. If that's undesirable, let me know and I'll be happy to delete it. Jhofferman (talk) 20:45, 14 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Please also note that you must not create or move articles to mainspace regarding subjects for which you have been paid. You must follow the conflict of interest guidelines. For an article which does not yet exist, you must create a draft, and then request review by articles for creation, not move the article to mainspace yourself. If you do this once again, you will be blocked from editing. For articles which already exist, suggest your edits to the talk page, and then add {{request edit}} for review by an editor without a COI. In no case may you directly edit mainspace with a subject for which you have a paid COI. Seraphimblade Talk to me 00:53, 15 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think threats are appropriate at this time. Everything I've done has been in good faith and I will do whatever I can, now and in the future, to abide by Wikipedia rules. If you want to block me now, knock yourself out. While I've gotten paid to write/edit a handful of articles over the past couple of years, I don't depend on Wikipedia (or Upwork, for that matter) to pay my rent.
I understand that you all have to deal with a lot, but I think it's really important to be able to distinguish between bad actors and people who make occasional missteps. If there are specific steps I can take now to ameliorate my transgressions, please let me know. Jhofferman (talk) 01:45, 15 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
BTW, I did create a draft and couldn't see how to request review. I assumed I wouldn't be able to move it into the mainspace if it was not a legitimate step. Jhofferman (talk) 01:48, 15 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It is generally expected that paid editors will be familiar with Wikipedia's policies, and not need hand holding from volunteers. Chief among those is that the fact you can do something does not mean you should. (As an example, I could go modify your comment above to make it look like you said something completely different than you did, but it would be utterly unacceptable for me to do that.) The Articles for Creation link I gave you should show you how to go about that. Seraphimblade Talk to me 05:23, 15 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Fair enough, and I again acknowledge and apologize for the mistakes I made. However, let me respectfully suggest that, while I appreciate your work, understand your feelings about paid editors, and fully support Wikipedia's efforts to guard against its being turned into yet another outlet for self-promotion and hype (something I always discuss with my clients), there may be better ways for you to communicate that don't unnecessarily alienate sympathetic contributors. For now, I think I'll simply curtail my Wikipedia activities, both paid and unpaid. Jhofferman (talk) 05:58, 15 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I have only ever had one account, based on my real name (Jon Hofferman), through which all of my work on Wikipedia has been done. Because of the unpleasantness of the last experience, I have stopped accepting paid Wikipedia jobs. I continue to support Wikipedia financially. Jhofferman (talk) 18:38, 3 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • There is a suggestion in the media, see for example here "Exclusive: Vivek Ramaswamy Paid to Have His Soros Fellowship and Covid-Era Role Scrubbed from Wikipedia Page", that you have accepted at least one paid editing job since September 2022. Care to comment? --Bejnar (talk) 18:39, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for bringing this to my attention and, yes, a comment seems in order. As I explained in the discussion on the talk page for Ramaswmay's article, I agreed to take the job because I had done a previous revision of the page in June 2022, and his assistant asked if I could make a few updates. I was hired and began the revision in January, before he declared his candidacy (which I found out about the same way as everyone else). It mostly involved adding information about his books and about Strive Asset Management, but there were also some excisions made, including details about Roivant subsidiaries and some other past activities that seemed to be cluttering the narrative without adding anything substantive. Apparently, some of the requested deletions may have been less innocent. While I frequently had to explain to him and his press secretary about Wikipedia's guidelines and why I couldn't do some of the things they wanted, I guess I wasn't as diligent as I should have been. I wasn't hired to delete material about the Soros Fellowship and his Covid-era role, but it's not inaccurate to say that he "paid to have it scrubbed." Needless to say, I regret my role in this. If you think there are good reasons for being unblocked, please review Wikipedia's guide to appealing blocks, then add the following text to the bottom of your talk page: {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}.  Valereee (talk) 19:44, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, considering that my Wikipedia contributions these days are pretty much limited to fixing typos and grammar in articles I happen to be reading, being blocked won't matter much. However, I would appreciate knowing what this is about. Thanks. Jhofferman (talk) 19:52, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It's about direct editing to Vivek Ramaswamy without listing yourself on that talk page as a connected contributor. You edited there a week ago, and you're the second editor both by number of edits and by amount of text added. FFR: don't edit where you're paid. Just make edit requests. Valereee (talk) 21:03, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You're right. After making some final revisions and ending my paid gig in March, I added a comma on August 13. My bad. Won't happen again. Jhofferman (talk) 23:36, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
This user's unblock request has been reviewed by an administrator, who declined the request. Other administrators may also review this block, but should not override the decision without good reason (see the blocking policy).

Jhofferman (block logactive blocksglobal blockscontribsdeleted contribsfilter logcreation logchange block settingsunblockcheckuser (log))

Request reason:

I was blocked because of controversies surrounding my work on the Vivek Ramamawamy page. I thought the block applied only to that page (which I think is wrong, but is fine with me), but apparently I can no longer edit any pages in Wikipedia. This makes no sense that I can see. Jhofferman (talk) 20:31, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Decline reason:

You can no longer edit any articles but are still free to make edit suggestions on article talk pages. If you wish to be unblocked, you need to agree to refrain from directly editing anything you've been paid to edit. Yamla (talk) 11:59, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

No objection to unblocking with a condition of not directly editing anything they've been paid to edit. Valereee (talk) 01:24, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
This user's unblock request has been reviewed by an administrator, who accepted the request.

Jhofferman (block logactive blocksglobal blockscontribsdeleted contribsfilter logcreation logchange block settingsunblockcheckuser (log))

Request reason:

I'm happy to to agree to refrain from directly editing anything I've been paid to edit, especially since I'm no longer being paid to edit anything, and I don't plan to take any paid jobs in the future. Jhofferman (talk) 19:16, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'm asking once more that my block be rescinded. I keep coming across formal errors on various pages, and my natural response as a copy editor is to fix them. As previously noted, I'm no longer accepting paid work. You can rest assured that this is the last time I'll ask. Jhofferman (talk) 22:47, 9 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
