Welcome to Wikipedia! We're looking forward to working with you and your students. If you have any questions or run into any problems, you leave a message on your course talk page and we'll try to get an answer for you quickly. That's also where students can post questions or request feedback. Good luck! --Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 14:23, 14 January 2011 (UTC)
- Hi again! I see you ran into DASHbot, who tried to remove an image of the MSU seal. Because that seal is copyrighted, it's being used on Wikipedia as fair use; according to our policies and guidelines on non-free content such as the seal, fair use media can only be used in articles, not on project pages such as your course page. Cheers--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 13:36, 15 January 2011 (UTC)
questions about images
Hi, two questions:
1) Why can't the seal be used on our page as well? It's an MSU-affiliated page? If we can't use this one, I'll just get a different one... but I need the access to upload pictures...
- Sorry, I missed this until this morning. The reason why is because, except for very circumscribed uses of "fair use" images, the only images that can be used on Wikipedia must be also free for others to use (nearly) however they wish. Fair use images, which are not freely licensed or in the public domain, can be used only in articles, and only when there could be no possible free equivalent that could be used instead. It leads to some silly restrictions in cases like this, but there's basically no way around it.--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 16:24, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
2) How do I get access to uploading pictures? I would like my students to be able to upload their pictures to the page, and I would like to add some other pictures to our course page as well.
- Pictures can be uploaded by navigating to Wikimedia Commons, the media archive for Wikipedia and the sister projects, and then clicking the "upload file" link in the left sidebar. Your campus ambassadors should be able to walk through some of the intricacies with you and/or your students; there are detailed instructions on the upload page, although they can be rather confusing at first. Once files are uploaded, they can be added to the course page using the file name, which it looks like you know how to do.
- PS: You can sign your comments in a discussion using four tildes, and you can indent a section to indicate that you're replying to the previous one by using one or more colons at the beginning. And if you have any technical questions that you want quick help with, try signing on our IRC help channel: http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=wikipedia-en-classroom --Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 16:24, 18 January 2011 (UTC)

Welcome
First off, Welcome to Wikipedia! :) The reason for my note today is to let you know that I will be the Coordinating Online Ambassador for the Media and Telecommunication Policy project/class. My username and information are on the second row of "The TC 210 Team" section (look for the goofy South Park character), so the students can find me quickly. I have some experience with radio and television stations, along with their companies, so I can be of more assistance than just showing people where to go for information. My talk page is open 24/7 and I try to answer posts immediately when I am online and as soon as I see them when I have been offline. Students can also email me via a link on my talkpage. Please let me or the Campus Ambassadors know if we can be of assistance. Take Care....Neutralhomer • Talk • 07:36, 18 February 2011 (UTC)
Thanks so much for your note. Glad to have you on board! How many students do you think you can mentor? Jaobar (talk) 22:36, 20 February 2011 (UTC)
- I have two spots open at the moment, but this is my first time as an online ambassador, so I might be able to throw more in there depending on if I can keep up with those two. - Neutralhomer • Talk • 22:41, 20 February 2011 (UTC)
Sounds good. Annie is currently starting to match groups with online mentors, so perhaps if you're in communication with her you could request to be connected with the groups working on topics that you're interested in. Topics to be covered are noted on our page. Thanks again. Jaobar (talk) 07:27, 21 February 2011 (UTC)
- Awesome. Which student is Annie? I see an Anna, but no Annie. Did you mean Allie? Just want to make sure I contact the right person. :) - Neutralhomer • Talk • 07:30, 21 February 2011 (UTC)
- Oh and if this edit was yours, please let me know. I reverted it as it was from a Canadian network, but if it was you or one of your students, I will revert back. - Neutralhomer • Talk • 07:32, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

How "real" is group 9 (Spectrum auctions)
Hi Professor Obar. I signed on as a mentor for the three students in group 9, Spectrum auctions. I am curious as to whether this group is active or not. I note that two of the three students in the group have not yet completed the relatively simple tasks they were to have completed over one month ago: "Due: 1/25 - Create a Wikipedia Account Due: 1/25 - Link account to the page (include name), add picture, write something about yourself"
Are the students who have not signed on still enrolled in the class? Should I disconnect from this group and perhaps look for another, potentially more serious, group of students? Cheers. N2e (talk) 03:16, 28 February 2011 (UTC)
- Seems the students aren't aware they can begin working on things without a green light from us here at Wikipedia. One of the Campus Ambassadors, apparently, is going to let them know on Thursday. Check the project's talk page for more. - Neutralhomer • Talk • 03:22, 28 February 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks Neutralhomer. That is useful information. I'm still looking for a response from Prof. Obar however as the explicit info on the page you refer to indicates that the students should have done the simple stuff over a month ago, as many students have. The simple stuff requires no editing of any articles in the mainspace; just some minor project updates. So, Prof. Obar? N2e (talk) 03:53, 28 February 2011 (UTC)
Yes the students are in the class and are participating (all three just took a class test). I would warn that the students in my class are undergrads and as a result, some will not be as eager as others to participate (though some are quite ready to go!) I am also moving things along at a pace that I feel is appropriate for a class of 100 students. While updating is of course the goal, there must be a certain amount of structure so that I can grade them all. I have asked the students to wait until they complete an introductory research assignment on the topics they've chosen before updating any Wikipedia sites. In the next few weeks you should start to see some edits. Thank you for your help. Jaobar (talk) 05:20, 28 February 2011 (UTC)
- Thank you very much for the helpful response. I will await action from the students. Cheers. N2e (talk) 12:52, 28 February 2011 (UTC)
My Apologizes
I want to apologize for this post by a user. That was uncalled for and I have made a comment on that user's talk page about that and asked them to be more "gentle" in his posts. I apologize I didn't catch it earlier, I hit the proverbial "wall" about 6pm and just woke up. If you experience any problems like that, please don't hestitate to let me or User:Sross (Public Policy), the Online Facilitator for the Wikimedia Foundation's Public Policy Initiative, know and we will give it a look-see and take the appropriate action. Again, my apologizes for this experience. - Neutralhomer • Talk • Coor. Online Amb'dor • 06:11, 4 March 2011 (UTC)
- Thank you for your note. This wasn't a huge deal at all. I modified what was written, and in fact will discuss his suggestion with students (though I have to find out about this "diff" function). I wrote a detailed response on his talk page if interested, and asked that future edits to the course page be discussed on the discussion page first. Thanks again. Jaobar (talk) 06:24, 4 March 2011 (UTC)
- A "diff" is the link of each individual edit. When you got to your watchlist (which I recommend students and you use, cause it makes things a ton easier) you can click on "diff" and it will give you the most updated individual edit made. The URL is that "diff" that he is talking about. Click on the article's history or "hist" and you will see each and every diff made on that article. If you lose something, it is always in the history and if the article has been deleted, it can always be brought back by admins using their tools. Nothing can be lost. :)
- As for the post, I seen your response and that was much better than I put. I felt that since you are the Professor saying part of your lesson plan was a "waste of time" wasn't the best way to go. That is what I addressed, but you are more than welcome to use his suggestion if it makes your job easier. :) As always, let me know if I can be of assistance. Take Care...Neutralhomer • Talk • Coor. Bare URLs and Full citations
Hi Prof. Obar. I have converted one of the two bare URLs references on your User page to a full citation, as an example for you and your students. While a bare URL can serve as a verifiable source in Wikipedia, and is better than no source, {{full}} citations are requested by Wikipedia policy which should include meta-information about the source, the date of the material (if one is provided in the source) and the date the material was accessed by the editor who used it in Wikipedia. Hope the example was helpful to you. Cheers. N2e (talk) 14:38, 7 March 2011 (UTC)
- Whoops. I see I made a copy/paste error on the URL when I wrote the full citation. Thanks for finding and fixing it so quickly. N2e (talk) 16:35, 7 March 2011 (UTC)
Your draft has been moved to Jonathan A. Obar. Please edit the article at that location. — Preceding unsigned comment added by My76Strat (talk • contribs) 03:19, 9 March 2011
Hello Professor. I just wanted to let you know that I have moved the Wikipedia page Jonathan A. Obar back to User:Jaobar. Please, refrain from moving User:Jaobar back to Jonathan A. Obar. Your userpage, User:Jaobar, is a page about you, as an editor (hence the prefix "User:" which separates your userpage from the [[WP:MAINSPACE|articlespace), on Wikipedia, and it does not belong in the articlespace, which is designated for articles only. If you are considering creating an article (in the mainspace) on yourself, please note that you are strongly discouraged from creating an article about yourself, as, Wikipedia is no place for self-promotion (see WP:NOTPROMOTION, point four). Let me know if you have any questions, concerns, or if you are in need of assistance. Regards, FASTILY (TALK) 09:09, 9 March 2011 (UTC)
- Thank you for your note. I left a rather long response on your talk page. I will repeat here that User:My76Strat was both courteous and helpful, and I hope is given a second chance.Jaobar (talk) 18:01, 9 March 2011 (UTC)
- Sir, it's been a while since our last interaction. I apologize that I was spent to near exhaustion, and anguished to the resultant extent; I was absent with support when needed, and rightfully deserved. This very thread is a reminder of that anguish, and to be frank; The counsel given is sufficiently flawed, and practically irrelevant. There are considerations which have not been extended! This effectively means; You were only told half of the relevant information! In time, we can revisit the merits of the article you were attempting to publish. And should it become necessary, those merits can be considered at any appropriate level. I intend to ensure equal and fair treatment is extended to you, as it should be extended to all users of good faith.
- I am stepping back to some of my previous rolls. And assisting you, and this class, is an area I will incorporate diligent resolve, to regain lost momentum. One thing of certainty, you won't have to clamor to see opinions from the ambassador element of this endeavor. Mostly I have been told: I provide too much depth. So expect to see some of my words, and these are the prelude. I consider it an honor to assist you, especially in light of this fact: You uplifted me with kindness in a moment of despair; I am not sure I would have had the strength to endure otherwise! These words are true sentiments, given upon esteem. My76Strat (talk) 23:25, 2 April 2011 (UTC)
step-by-step guide
- I've added several comments to the "step-by-step guide" guide at Wikipedia talk:Ambassadors. Rather than following normal thread formatting practice, I inserted them into prior comments. That is actually extremely unusual (and is usually frowned on), but the guide is intended to be read as whole... I think that is probably about all that I can think of to say on the topic, although I'd be happy to respond to further questions. GlitchCraft (talk) 02:48, 12 March 2011 (UTC)

Re:Sable.
Greetings, Jaobar! I'm glad to have finally made your acquaintance. Yes, for a while I thought I was supposed to look over the article when the students came to ask for my assistance, but I realize now I'm supposed to be checking up on it regularly and offering feedback. I'm already reading it over as I write this, and it's off to a good start! I'm not very familiar with court case articles, so I may have to look around the talkpages of a few in order to find out all the wikiprojects they fall into the scope of. Wilhelmina Will (talk) 04:17, 1 April 2011 (UTC)
- Update:I've added the banners to the wikiprojects, and I'll be giving feedback on the talkpage in a moment, but I want to make sure, first: Were you expecting me to assess the article's class and importance within each of the wikiprojects, or are the students supposed to be learning how to do this, firsthand? Wilhelmina Will (talk) 04:22, 1 April 2011 (UTC)
- Nice to "meet" you too. Please do help the students improve the article in any way you see fit. I only ask that you push them to make the edits (direct them in some instances) as opposed to you doing the edits for them. Let me know if you have any other questions. For managing a 100+ person class and all of the ambassadors that come with them I award you this barnstar. Every day you are on wiki working with us and your students. Guerillero | My Talk | Review Me 03:14, 3 April 2011 (UTC) |
- Hi Professor Obar, I strongly support what Guerillero said. As an ambassador, I think that it's good the way you are really involved in this project. I've worked with a few course instructors on-wiki and so far, you are the only instructor I've seen who is absolutely hands-on with what's going on. :) Bejinhan talks 03:19, 3 April 2011 (UTC)
- Many thanks for your positive feedback... means a lot. This isn't about me however, we're a team... and I certainly am not managing the ambassadors, we are all working together. The students have already gotten a lot out of this project, thanks to all of our hard work. Now to just get those articles going! Thanks again for the kind words.Jaobar (talk) 03:34, 3 April 2011 (UTC)
- Absolutely, yes indeed! You have my uppermost regards! I hope the students realize their own good fortune, for having your example, and all they might glean. I am a better person for our interactions, and this has come at significantly less opportunity. Indeed I would gladly buy your lunch, for the privileged of association, and to meet this person, who I know of certainty, you are. My76Strat (talk) 03:46, 3 April 2011 (UTC)
Was Corporate Media Lobby [1] made by copying over from Direct lobbying? (Or some of it, or whatever?) - If so, it needs attribution, on the talk page, to say where it came from. That can be achieved using Template:Copied. I can help with it, if you want - let me know. Cheers, Chzz ► 01:13, 10 April 2011 (UTC)
- I wrote the material that appears on both pages. Yes, I did copy the material, I hope this is alright. Do whatever you feel is appropriate. Thanks. Jaobar (talk) 02:11, 10 April 2011 (UTC)
- OK - yes; it's fine to copy, but it's best to add attribution - even if it is your own work; so that people searching don't wonder if it is a copyright violation. I've done this - which I think covers it. Cheers, Chzz ► 06:39, 10 April 2011 (UTC)

Congrats to your students for making DYK! We don't have an automated way to track DYKs by students, but do please add your class's DYK (and any other achievements this term) to the Trophy Case. I would like to apologize for reverting your edit to Wikipedia:WikiProject United States Public Policy/Courses/Media and Telecommunication Policy spring 2011 (Obar). Your edit was clearly not vandalism and I have since reinstated it. I've gotten a little carried way with reverting vandalism as the result of the high traffic volume to the site following the news of Osama bin Laden's death, and I misidentified your edit in the frenzy. – Zntrip 05:26, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

DYK for Free Press
Hi, I saw your note on the DYK talk page. Perhaps next time your class does a project, it can start it in on its own userpage on Wikipedia, and when it's ready, move it to the mainspace. That way, students could continually update the page and when you finally move it, it would qualify for DYK. See WP:User pages#Subpages. Best, Yoninah (talk) 22:29, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
- Hi, also, professor. There's been some ongoing discussion about the possibility of a WP:IAR "ignore all rules" approval of the "Did you know?" nomination for this class article, despite the problem with the timing. If you see this message, would you please take a look at the corresponding DYK "template talk" entry? Since I noticed from your contributions history that you appear to have been offline for a few days, I've also sent you an e-mail message about this. As discussed at template talk, I'll also be contacting a couple of the volunteer "campus ambassadors" that I see (from posts above) have been involved with your class.
- Oh, finally, the tongue-in-cheek mentions I made to "biting" in the DYK thread refer to this guideline and this humorous essay. Best regards, – OhioStandard (talk) 09:22, 22 May 2011 (UTC)

About userspace sub-pages
I just saw your reply at the "template talk" page; thank you. My guess is we should be able to move forward with the information you provided there, that the consensus there will permit that. I just thought I'd also provide a quick follow-up to user Yoninah's preceding comment, since I'm not sure you'll want to wade through the "Subpages" information page he linked to, and you'll naturally want to prevent a recurrence of this problem.
You don't have any subpages as I'm writing this, I see; if you want some, or your students do, all that needs to be done is to create "links" to not-yet-existing pages, ( e.g. User:Jaobar/Sandbox, User:Jaobar/Workspace1, User:Jaobar/Workspace2, etc. ). Then once you "save" the text that includes these links to not-yet-existing pages, you'll see that they display in red. Just click on one of those "redlinks", add whatever content you want to the page you "land" on, and save that. Next time you see the link it'll be a regular "blue" link to an existing page. Or if you'd rather, i.e. if you don't want students editing one of your personal subpages, I think it would be fine, as well, for you to create an alternate account for your class, with an account name of something like, "TC210Spring2011Jaobar", or whatever, so long as the only person who ever logs into it is you. You'd identify it on its user page and as the first entry on its talk page as an having been created by yourself, create the "blank" subpages (workspaces) you want, and then never log in as that "user/account" again. Just edit its existing subpages pages as "Jaobar", and have your students edit under their own account names. Don't disclose the password to your students, of course.
As I say, I think this would be okay, but please check with whoever the right campus ambassador would be for your participation here, or perhaps with Annie Lin if you want to be doubly sure.
May I also suggest that if your class picks an existing article to expand via this process (i.e. on a userspace subpage) that you might also create a new section on the "live" article's talk page to let other users know that your class is working on an expansion or rewrite? Other users, i.e. non-members of your class, will still be able to edit the article while your students are expanding a copy of it in user-space, of course, but posting a notification might also help other editors, non-members of your project, avoid duplicating your class' effort, too. Best, – OhioStandard (talk) 05:42, 23 May 2011 (UTC)
- Hmm... I just looked at your Wikiproject page and discovered all y'all are way ahead of me. I didn't realize the infrastructure for the campus participation projects was anything like so well-defined already, so my suggestion re directory names and such, above, is probably moot. Please check with your the appropriate contact people on your team for clarification. I've informed user Neelix about the "template talk" thread for the Free Press article, btw, and have asked him to put the "DYKMake" template into proper order to give credit where it's due, since I don't know how to do that myself, and since he's listed on your project page as the "mentor" for the Free Press group, aka "Group 22". Boston summit contact
Hi Jonathan! This is Juliana Marques here, we met last Friday in Boston at the WMF summit. I just wanted to drop a note with the link to my userpage. Hope we can stay in touch! Domusaurea (talk) 18:27, 12 July 2011 (UTC)
Logos and images
The explanation on that talk page is correct: because logos are not freely licensed, they can't be used at all on Wikipedia outside of articles. What we've been doing instead is using the most iconic free image of the campus we can find. I put one of the UofT library in, but if there's something more appropriate, feel free to replace. it.--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 17:33, 3 August 2011 (UTC)
December 2011
Welcome to Wikipedia. It might not have been your intention, but your recent edit removed content from 21st Century Democratized Information and Democracy. When removing content, please specify a reason in the edit summary and discuss edits that are likely to be controversial on the article's talk page. If this was a mistake, don't worry; the content has been restored, as you can see from the page history. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia, and if you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox. Thank you. – Majora4 (leave a message) 20:13, 15 December 2011 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of The Impact of the Internet on Newspapers
A tag has been placed on The Impact of the Internet on Newspapers, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a redirect to an article talk page, file description page, file talk page, MediaWiki page, MediaWiki talk page, category talk page, portal talk page, template talk page, help talk, user page, user talk or special page from the main/article space.
If you can fix the redirect to point to a mainspace page, please do so and remove the speedy deletion tag. However, please do not remove the speedy deletion tag unless you are fixing the redirect. If you think the redirect should be retained as is for some reason, contest the deletion by clicking on the button that looks like this: which appears inside of the speedy deletion ({{db-...}}
) tag (if no such tag exists, the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate). Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the article's talk page directly to give your reasons. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. DASHBot (talk) 23:00, 17 December 2011 (UTC)
The "Show preview" button
Hi!
- I noticed your work on Wikipedia:Village_pump_(proposals)#Learn_to_be_a_Wikipedia_Administrator_-_New_class_at_MSU required a great number of edits.
- Are you aware that you can see a preview of the work you're doing (to check everything looks good, and check spellings and punctuation etc.) before submitting the work as a finished draft?
- Just to the right of the Save page button, you'll see the Show preview button. By using this to check our work before saving the page, we can save a lot of space on the Wikimedia database servers, and other editors a lot of bother trying to keep track of the page history. Please try to get into the habit of using it.
- Also, it's good practice to always leave a short comment about what work we did in the edit summary (the text entry field just above the Save page and Show preview buttons.)
- This helps other editors tell at a glance what you have done. Sometimes, without an edit summary, your work may be considered thoughtless, and be undone.
Whatever you choose, happy editing! fredgandt 06:37, 21 December 2011 (UTC)

In a sublime example of using the master's tools on the master's house, they documented such behavior's taking place on an e-mail list for professional linguists Herring et al. 95.
