Information icon Hello. Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia.

When editing Wikipedia, there is a field labeled "Edit summary" below the main edit box. It looks like this:

Edit summary (Briefly describe your changes)

You can use the edit summary field to explain your reasoning for an edit, or provide a description of what the edit changes. Summaries save time for other editors and reduce the chances your edit will be misunderstood. For some edits a summary may be quite brief.

Please provide an edit summary for every edit you make. With a Wikipedia account you can give yourself a reminder to add an edit summary by setting Preferences → Editing → Tick Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary, and then click the "Save" button. Thanks! Madeline (part of me) 18:17, 30 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Categories

[edit]

Hey there. Just noticed some of your recent edits to categories. It looks like you are removing the sort keys. Please read this section for how they work. They are there for a reason and they are NOT pipe link labels. --DB1729talk 19:26, 30 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

...cont. Now that I've looked a little more closely, maybe they are unneeded in these cases. I would prefer though that you include some kind of rationale for these changes in a edit summary, particularly since there seems to be nothing apparently wrong the sorting scheme to begin with. --DB1729talk 19:35, 30 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

While some of your edits are alright, you are removing the key part on the "by language" categories. This definitely shouldn't be done. An edit summary is also appreciated when you are removing keys on so many articles. --Ferien (talk) 19:42, 30 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I noticed you reverted my edit despite the explanation above.. can you explain why the keys are unnecessary on all these categories, please? --Ferien (talk) 19:49, 30 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Ferien: Right. Yes, well they are still sorted after removing the keys, they just all sorted alphabetically, but all under 0–9 instead of strictly under the letter. See Category:1950s films by language. I agree this is ill-advised to mass-remove sortkeys like this when there is nothing wrong with it in the first place. Personally, I would suggest reverting all James MMMM's edits where they have simply removed the sorting keys. --DB1729talk 19:53, 30 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Ferien: You seem to be responding to my post about this issue. James MMMM has not communicated at all. Per WP:BRD I believe it justifiable to revert these edits in question and restore the sort keys. DB1729talk 20:00, 30 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@DB1729: I agree. --Ferien (talk) 20:07, 30 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Ferien: I have reverted a couple sets of James M's sortkey removals and linked this discussion in the edit summary in the hopes it will alert them of our concerns on their talk page. Doesn't seem to have worked. Oh well.DB1729talk 20:29, 30 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@DB1729: thanks anyway. --Ferien (talk) 20:31, 30 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Do I have your attention now? I see you reverted my lastest reverts. Can we talk about your recent edits now? --DB1729talk 21:21, 30 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Materialscientist, I ran CU because there's a few longterm vandals who keep messing with categories. This is not, as far as my evidence shows, one of them, but they have made hundreds more similar edits before creating an account. As far as I'm concerned, you can make this block indefinite and they can ask for an unblock if they explain what they're doing. Drmies (talk) 22:03, 30 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    • @Drmies: Thanks for looking deeper. Could you please link to an example of the "similar edits before creating an account"? or at least what namespace they were in? It's mostly out of curiosity and if I'm missing something. I look out for this sort of thing and if it was an IP removing hundreds of sortkeys from categories, with the filter settings I use, I think I would have seen that. And I don't recall seeing anything like that recently. (If it was sortkeys on article pages, that would explain it.) Also, thank you to Materialscientist for the block and reverts. --DB1729talk 23:29, 30 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
      • User:DB1729, sorry, but I can't do that--my deeper look came courtesy of my CU glasses. What I remember is that they were the same type of edits in the same space, but I'm not expert on sortkeys (ha, I don't know what they are). I could share it with Materialscientist, who is also a CheckUser, but they typically don't respond to pings. Sorry, Drmies (talk) 01:00, 31 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Understood. Not terribly important really. Thanks anyway! DB1729talk 02:40, 31 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I noticed that you may have recently made edits while logged out. Wikipedia's policy on multiple accounts usually does not allow the use of both an account and an IP address by the same person in the same setting and doing so may result in your account being blocked from editing. Additionally, making edits while logged out reveals your IP address, which may allow others to determine your location and identity. If this was not your intention, please remember to log in when editing. Thank you. DrKay (talk) 19:12, 5 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Please ensure you are familiar with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, and please do not continue to make edits that appear disruptive. Fraidy Cat (1942 film) moved to draftspace

[edit]

An article you recently created, Fraidy Cat (1942 film), is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Sorting keys 2

[edit]

Hello, would you be willing to explain your many recent changes to article sortkeys? When an article has the DEFAULTSORT template, the purpose is to change the way the article is sorted on its category page so that it's in a more intuitive place. It's quite normal for an article such as "A Trip to the Moon" to have its sorting title changed to "Trip to the Moon, A"; see WP:SORTKEY. Furthermore, if you change the template to say "{{DEFAULTSORT:A Trip to the Moon}}", this defeats the purpose of having a sortkey at all because that is the title of the article. Thus it would make more sense to delete the key entirely. However I do not think these edits are appropriate. You have been asked to explain yourself before and I believe you have never done so, but if I'm wrong, please correct me now before this matter is escalated. -- Iritscen (talk) 13:17, 15 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Iritscen: James MMMM has not then, nor ever, demonstrated for once either the capability or willingness to communicate with anyone. James has been blocked before for similar behavior and their changes to sortkeys should be reverted. --DB1729talk 17:11, 15 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
