Placement of images

Images on Commons

You have added some good scans to Commons but can I remind you that these do not count as self-published images and therefore are not suitable for a CC Zero licence. If they are British Commonwealth items, and old enough, you could use the expired Crown Copyright licence, or if not Brit Com but still old, there is a suitable licence for those too. Check out the images already uploaded for details. You might want to ease up on your pace of editing in order to understand all these things before doing more. Thanks. 1. OK, I have understood that Wikipedia prefers a PD-UKGov license for > 50 years object, rather than my usual > 100 years! Nobody created a problem for my genuine Austrian stamps < 1912.

2. Please consider my proposal for a certified Dardenne image in the History of Mauritius, it was missing. I can give more details on this stamp. My image is NOT a book copy.

3. When seeing the controversy of Mauritius 1847 first issue image (fake or not) , I can make a very good scan of the Jakubek sold combination of both POST OFFICE, from their catalog (in my safe). Clearly a better quality than the forgery (ex Sebjarod) available in the article on those stamps!!

4. I also suggest to limit the number of images of Queen Victoria stamps to different models in its Category. It is now overcrowded with New Zealand stamps, some not even worth a private collection. I will try a gallery on chronological order, cfr Tutorial model of Fashion in the 18th century. Yes, I want to do more. Thanks for your help. Jacquesverlaeken (talk) 18:58, 30 July 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for this. I was referring at the use of File:Mauritiuspostofficeissuestamp1847PD.JPG which is cleary a fake, but see its 4 (!) versions history, even a good one (3d) version has been again replaced by this fake! It still appears on the "Deutsch" version of "Post office Mauritius". I had stated "vrai???" below it in the French page, but this was dropped. See the Talk page on Mauritius "Post office" stamps. I think that this image should be officially recognized as a fake. Seems that all English articles are OK.

Other people are trying with what's available: a picture upload by another than me that was on this Wikipedia in English in the first place. Image positioning

Can I remind you that the Manual of Style states that in most cases images should be right aligned. You can view the guidance here: WP:IMAGES Centring images disrupts the text flow. I have moved the image that you added to Postage stamps and postal history of Brazil to the right. It concerns me that this is the second time I have pointed this out. Thanks for caring on details and not substance. I have learned to use the Wikipedia Tutorial on Images which states "Although most thumbnails are combined with flowing text and are placed to the right or left, you can also place a thumbnail without text flowing around it. One way is to center it, using "center". For very long text, the image must remain within the concerned section, and not floating around in an uncontrolled position. I would rather appreciate receiving an opinion on the fake stamp that I mentioned. Sorry. Jacquesverlaeken (talk) 15:36, 2 August 2012 (UTC)

Well, I care about details and substance, the substance is just an amalgam of details after all. Regarding positioning I would think they are referring to large or wide images and not the shape of a typical stamp. This is an ongoing debate with some placing images alternatively left and right like a newspaper article, but it seems to me that all right is the most effective layout, apart from galleries which work well aligned left or centred but not right. It took me an eternity to solve them all, so it is rather frustrating to see so many of them come back. By now, the article had 30 links to disambiguation pages. Hello, yes, I am solving many links. Please read the Talk text ""Checking and completing (?) the list - Czech spelling."" to understand what is going on. I am adding hundreds of new villages, and solve the links when it is possible AFTER receiving a notification. Yesterday, I have even ADDED 2 names in Disambiguation articles. When you edit, you do not see the color. If some come back, it is because new names are added, without the correct Czech spelling at first (as explained). Sorry if you have had the impression of wasted effort: it is just the opposite!! Now I will sort out the "Neudorf...".

Alsólendva cancel

Hi Jacques, The 1925 Alsólendva cancel you placed as an illustration with the Lendava Wikipedia page cannot actually be from 1925; the Turul stamps were long defunct at that time. The Alsólendva cancels were changed to Dolnja Lendava cancels in or before 1920. The year must be a mistake for (presumably) 1915. Our collecting interests overlap! I will look at your work with much interest. If you want digital lists of all Hungarian cancels (pre-1920) just let me know. Johan7h (talk) 16:59, 16 November 2013 (UTC)

• Hello Johan, Indeed the date looks strange, which I had noticed by the word 'late'. The postmark is clearly genuine, typical Hungarian type, which is of historical relevance for a place so close to Hungary. It could be a post error as you suggest, or a real late use (but if the post-office name was changed, it is unlikely)! Feel free to comment on the page! Do you know that stamps of King Baudouin (1930-1993) are still in official use in Belgium? By the way, I am highly interested in a digital list for Hungary after 1871 (see the discussion around the gallery Postmarks of Austria-Hungary in construction). It is a pleasure to share views with other postmarks collectors interested in history (they are too rare in my experience)!

The message was dated October 2008, I thought that it was to be refreshed, looking in the number of edits since 5 years! My message is 'looks' good, it is thus not a definitive statement! Whether each paragraph requires a citation is a new rule for me. It is asked to Wiki editors NOT to copy verbatim texts, so a repeat of the inspiring sources does not look essential. But I am not a censor. Regards.

There is no rule that all paragraphs require citations but questioned statements should be cited. With such a popular issue I would have expected there to be sufficient philatelic literature or websites to verify virtually everything. So, in my opinion it still needs citations. I relly don't know what you mean by: It is asked to Wiki editors NOT to copy verbatim texts, so a repeat of the inspiring sources does not look essential. Thanks for having changed the year 2008, it removes ambiguïty as to its current relevance. In an attempt to satisfy you, I have added 5 inline citations with some added details from the big SG2009 Catalogue. For the basic question, I think the Caution tag is excessively severe for such a quality article. I thought that it was required to explicit where an inline citation was needed (I do not see any). Philatelic information is generally quite factual, there is little contradictions between catalogs, this is why I do not feel that every statement must be in-line cited (perhaps only if something looks strange in one of the sources). But please note that I do not want to interfere with Wikipedia policies; these are just own subjective feelings. Further discussions should be at another level (perhaps with the main article authors). Best regards.

Austrian Lombardy used in the Levant

I collect Austrian post offfices in Epirus, northwestern Greece.
I see that you have searched into this collection.

When were the Lombardy stamps that were used by these offices issued?
Do you have their catalogue numbers? Michel or other?

This is also an issue V, Michel N°23 brown, 1864 issue, circle postmark Mueller type RS-f, page 217 of its 1961 Handbook Austrian Post Offices in the Levant, #41a (Epirus-Greece). Black 50 points. Exists also black and blue on the IVth issue (value 100x2 points). For Ferchenbauer (the Austrian expert), the Lloyd Prevesa office opened in 1855, and closed (aufgelassen) on 15 December 1914. This is a shame, and reflects on history disregard! The word exonyms is a recent invention, and creates interpretation problems for all countries with a ruler of another language. Note that I have removed this word for the Czech Republic article. Jacquesverlaeken (talk) 21:03, 29 June 2021 (UTC)
