Invitation to look at edits on IQ reference chart

I see the article IQ reference chart has been tagged for expert review since October 2012. As part of a process of drafting a revision of that article in my user sandbox, I am contacting all Wikipedians who have edited that article since early 2009 for whom I can find a user talk page.

I have read all the diffs of all the edits committed to the article since the beginning of 2009 (since before I started editing Wikipedia). I see the great majority of edits over that span have been vandalism (often by I.P. editors, presumably teenagers, inserting the names of their classmates in charts of IQ classifications) and reversions of vandalism (sometimes automatically by ClueBot). Just a few editors have referred to and cited published reliable sources on the topic of IQ classification. It is dismaying to see that the number of reliable sources cited in the article has actually declined over the last few years. To help the process of finding reliable sources for articles on psychology and related topics, I have been compiling a source list on intelligence since I became a Wikipedian in 2010, and I invite you to make use of those sources as you revise articles on Wikipedia and to suggest further sources for the source on the talk pages of the source list and its subpages. Because the IQ reference chart article has been tagged as needing expert attention for more than half a year, I have opened discussion on the article's talk page about how to fix the article, and I welcome you to join the discussion. The draft I have in my user sandbox shows my current thinking about a reader-friendly, well sourced way to update and improve the article. East Africa

Hello! I was born in Uganda and grew up there. For the past 31 years I have resided in the United States. I return to East Africa every year since 2010. I have visited, albeit briefly, all the neighboring countries except South Sudan and perhaps Burundi. The limiting factor for me in both countries is the still dicey security situation. Explanation for edit

Hey I'm GreekHistorian! I appreciate your career and you were just doing your job. I was just doing mine (which is deleting antiquated and irrational information on Wikipedia). About the Battle of Crete, I wasn't attempting some experiment, I was deleting what I believe was a one sided argument. Whoever wrote this failed to present the other side of the argument or state that it wasn't solved yet. Here is the error. He believes that that the 22, June, 1941 (launch date of Operation Barbarossa)was scheduled several weeks before. He fails to explain that the original date was 15, May, 1941. A campaign of such date could have been postponed cause of the Battle of Crete or other factors. I believe that would be all I've got to mention about the article for now.

I have restored the paragraph which you have now removed twice. It was supported by three references. By removing it you are editing according to you personal point of view, which is not allowable in Wikipedia. See WP:NPOV. I will leave a message on your talk page about learning how to edit. a correction

I made a correction to one of the descriptions under one of mark levin's books. The current description under his book 'the liberty amendments' states that mark calls for an overhaul to the constitution. This is false. He is very specific that he calls for no such thing. So when I corrected it and made it accurate greenmaven said he returned it to how it was because he thought it was 'better' the way it was. So my question is-why would it be better as an inaccurate description? It is not. That makes no sense. The correction I made paraphrased levin's own words to a T. Obviously the correction i made makes the description better. How can it possibly be better being wrong? Please change it back to my description. I stand by my reversion of your correction of Mark Levin. The phrases "breathing life into the constitution" and "to combat an overreaching federal government" indicate a non-neutral point of view (WP:NPOV). Also, none of what you wrote was substantiated by a reference, and can therefore be removed without further justification. BTW your next edit, which was reverted by ClueBot, was something that belonged on my talk page or the article talk page, not in the body of the article. Changes to a page

Hello! I noticed you reverted some changes a person I know made to the Oklahoma Baptist University page. We're concerned about the entire Controversies section, as it appears to contain parts that are either pure opinion and soapboxing (which only use this individual's blog as references), one-sided arguments that have few or no citations, or, in some cases, outright lies. A Controversies section in and of itself also appears negative. Such a section does not follow the general outline other university pages in this area, and, as an example, the page for University of California, Davis has its pepper spray incident listed under History, and not under a separate Controversies section. Do you have any suggestions on how to proceed editing this section to remove the false information? Typogrammer (talk) 03:36, 16 November 2013 (UTC)

Having a controversies section seems to invite opinionated and non neutral editing. I recommend putting anything verifiable into a History section and deleting unverifiable material. No, I would not use template messages. Write in your own words. State what changes you plan to make, and why. If there is no immediate opposition, proceed to edit. Otherwise, argue your case, rather than risk an edit war. You may find that, by now, other editors have gone cold on the matter. Remember anyone can remove material for which there is no reputable source. I would guess that for much of the controversy there are no published sources. Check the article history and you will find I reverted another editor's work, after yours. The reason why I have not gone right through the article removing other things, is that I am using an automated process, which just presents me with recent edits of one person. My addition of one word, "modelesque" accurately describes the dolls. It's only one word. What could it hurt? You say it doesn't add anything, but it certainly takes nothing away from the article. I think you take your job too seriously.

No I am not going to make any further clarification to him. Frankhu2016 made his first edits, as I recall, on Supercomputing, by editing its lead paragraph in a very amateurish way. After I reverted this edit he attempted to add the same material a second and third time. I thought I asked him not to keep doing that in a fair and reasonable manner. I certainly do not think I WP:OWN the article, but I am a retired computer programmer and am in a good position to make a judgement call on Supercomputing. Frankhu2016 clearly needs to read up on the guidelines to editing WP. He did not even know how to post an edit on my talk page in the normal fashion, which I also helped him out on. Given his inexperience as a WP editor, I do think he would be better gaining more experience editing something less technical than Supercomputing. Responding to your post on my talk page, I don't know whether the edit I made was "constructive"; it was made for the sake of consistency. Most "History of ..." pages that redirect to a more general article redirect to a specific "History" section within that article (assuming such a section exists). I added the specific "History" section to the "History of Ptolemaic Egypt" redirect page both because that's how it's usually done and because all other "History of ..." pages redirecting to "Ptolemaic Kingdom" (which are "History of ptolemaic egypt" and "History of Greek Egypt") already redirect to "Ptolemaic Kingdom#History". I'm not sure whether I'm supposed to await a response from you before making my edit again or not; if you haven't responded to this within a full day, I'll assume that means you're ok with my making the same edit again. The words I added are neither repetitive nor redundant - they are necessary. Imagine the following definition, where the word food has been replaced with music: A meal is an eating occasion that takes place at a certain time and includes specific, prepared music . Given your logic, a specific, prepared music also can be understood as a meal. You can say: music is not eatable, but neither is an occasion. It is clear that Lusitania was a province of the Roman Empire and is therefore in no way relevant to the modern day definition of Hispanic. Hispania was the old English word for Spain, derived from the Spanish, Espania. Helo, in Chinese, the genus Ailanthus is zh:臭椿属 which has the species zh:臭椿 chòu chūn (A. altissima), this also has an alternative old name. The genus Toona is zh:香椿屬 which has some species called chūn, such as zh:香椿 xiāng chūn (T. sinensis), zh:红椿 hóng chūn (T. ciliata), etc. So I think real chūn belongs to Toona instead of Ailanthus, or maybe we should mention both genera. I did not know where to mention him, and i found that that was the best place. Afterwards I tried to add him to the list of names of Vishnu which also was taken off. Reverts to 3-4 defense

Why are you reverting my edits to 3-4 defense? The Bills do play some 3-4, but it is not their base defense. Here is a cite: http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/depth/_/name/buf/formation/4-3-defense. The parts I deleted from Wikipedia state—without a citation—that the Bills play a 3-4 defense.

It is really frustrating for newcomers to edit Wikipedia — every time I come on, someone always reverts my edits. World Citizen page

Thank you for your message. I would be grateful if you would offer your assistance as I have attempted to contact the person who reverted my changes; however, he is not responding to my messages.

I'm not entirely sure why my edits are being considered "unconstructive" and "disruptive".

I'm in no way pushing any religious, political, corporate or any other cause. World Citizen was registered as a company in 1992. It is run solely by volunteers, does not ask for monetary donations of any kind and is dedicated to encouraging and supporting worldwide philanthropic and humanitarian projects and acts of goodwill in the spirit of service; no hidden agenda.

Furthermore, "World Citizen" is an internationally registered trademark under the Madrid Protocol and its Treaty partners. Additionally, copyright of the name and ancillary images are all owned by World Citizen Pty Ltd.

I think that it's only fair that the Wikipedia entry for "World Citizen" states that it is a registered company and that it has a website. Would you please explain why this is not permissible?

Also, would you mind explaining what an "experienced editor" means? Are these editors Wikipedia staff?

Would appreciate any help you can offer and, again, my intention is not to be disruptive, but to present some facts about the registered company, trademark, copyright and associated site.

I acknowledge your message and will respond more fully when I have had more time to think it through. Meantime, I suggest you do not edit the article further. Please assume Trueman is acting in good faith, and has valid reasons for reverting your edits. It is unfortunate that he will not respond to your efforts to discuss it with him, but he may have valid reasons for that as well.

Briefly, WP tries to supply unbiased information that can be verified and is about notable subjects (there is a lot of documentation in WP which addresses those concepts; I will give you some links later). Your role as the founder of World Citizen will raise issues of WP:COI. WP is not intended as a means by which organisations can promote there own interests. See WP:NOT. That is all I can say at present. I will say more later. It would be well worth while for you to follow the links in the 'Welcome' section at the top of your Talk Page. There are a number of interlocking issues here. Firstly the article, before you edited it, was a short piece along the lines of a philosophical discussion of the concept of world citizenship. There was an existing article called Global citizen into which this article was proposed for merging. (I would support that merger). There is an article called World citizenship which redirects the reader to Global citizenship Here you can see that efforts are being made to simplify WP by not letting articles develop in parallel that are essentially about the same topic.

You have then added a large amount of material about your organisation, which is definitely out of place in this article, and possibly in WP as a whole. I support all the reverts made by User:Philip Trueman. The best way to proceed would be for you to create an article in your own userspace, that is, as a subpage under your User Page. Tell me if you need help with that. By convention, other editors will let you experiment there without interference. If you can develop an acceptable article there you can move it later to mainspace. All this is descibed in WP documentation.

You have said "I think that it's only fair that the Wikipedia entry for "World Citizen" states that it is a registered company and that it has a website". Well, no. The idea, phrase, concept of being a 'world citizen' long pre-dates your registration of a company or a trade mark. You have no ownership of that phrase on WP, or of an article by that name. Any article you succeed in adding will need to be factual rather than promotional for it to remain on WP. I suggest you give your article a name such as 'World citizen (company)'. • There are many companies listed on Wikipedia containing large amounts of information on what they do and how they do it. How do these companies get their content listed?
• How do you see World Citizen as different to the following?:

• Vision Australia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vision_Australia
• Oxfam http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxfam

NB: Just so that you are aware, regarding the list of companies above, World Citizen encourages and supports all such organisations by giving them a central hub to promote their endeavours, which provides a "one-stop shop" for people looking for a variety of outlets to volunteer their services through other means than just money.

Based on your message and the articles you recommended, I can create a new page called "World Citizen (company)" instead of including the content on the main World citizen page. I would imagine this would come under the "disambiguation" listing if someone were to search for "world citizen". As an example, if I search for "shell", there are many articles suggested. Under the Business section, I see "Shell corporation".

I'll create this in my own user space as a subpage, as you suggested. I will let you know when I've done this and, if you have the time, I would appreciate your review and feedback.

I will look at the 'Gary Davis' question; I suspect his material does not belong there either. You are right that many companies have pages on WP and it is a matter of continual contention, because rather than being strictly factual, many companies (and individuals) attempt to use WP as a means of self-promotion. It is really important that you understand the first of the 'five pillars' of WP - (WP:FIVE) - WP is an encyclopedia, not a directory for enterprises or individuals. This will still apply to "World Citizen (company)", if you go ahead and create it. And, yes, a disambiguation page may be necessary. You have named four organisations, above; one of them is Oxfam. The difference is that they are unquestionably notable. (WP:NOTABLE), whereas I think "World Citizen (company)" may not satisfy WP criteria for notability. I advise you to explore that, before doing a lot of work on an article that may still be challenged and recommended for deletion. Has your organisation come to the attention of the media? Is it referred to in a book? Another thing to be aware of is that you cannot just cut and paste material from your website into WP, because it is considered a violation of copyright, even though you may have written that material yourself. See WP:COPYVIO. I intend to pursue the question of whether the existing article should be merged with Global citizen. Thanks for your interest in the page. As Lauren Beukes I generally avoid editing my own page out of respect for Wikipedia's processes, except to correct major factual errors, and always in accordance to Wikipedia's principles and guidelines, or in those cases where it's creating confusion.

The "of French and Dutch descent line" is creating confusion.

I've had journalists emphasize that, when its largely irrelevant, and seen tweets recently that imply I'm really Dutch/French) (eg. from yesterday: "@XetraSherpa @mrsxroots @ProseFTW Lauren Beukes (nationalité sud-africaine mais origine française-néerlandaise) a écrit Zoo City, ça compte?") even though my interview in the source article referenced, from a very small but credible website, specifically talks about how that was 350-400 years ago and that I identify as South African, that those historical links to Europe are so old they aren't even sepia-tinted photographs, they're oil paintings. My family, apparently, came in with Jan van Riebeeck's ship in the 1600s.

Unfortunately, as you will know, few people click through to the source, or even read the footnotes.

I've been finding myself having to explain a lot, recently, that I really, really am South African and it's incredibly frustrating.

Can we correct the wording?

If it's about establishing my race as a white South African, I'd rather it said that plainly. (Although I do think the picture is a giveaway)

"Lauren Beukes is a white South African, born in Johannesburg, currently living in Cape Town."

If Wikipedia really, absolutely does have to mention the French/Dutch descent (which is not established fact, it's family lore), could we move it much further down the page? Or create a separate section on Ancestry.

It's a bit like saying "Jonathan Franzen, an American author, originally of British and Swedish descent" (or whatever he is) when his family came to America with the Pilgrims. (Again, I'm making this up, I don't know anything about Franzen's ancestry, because it's irrelevant to his Wikipedia entry or his identity as an American author.)

I'd really appreciate any help on correcting the wrong impressions this wording is creating - or finessing the language to clarify.

I sympathise with your position and will do what I can to help. My original intention was to restore some wording that appeared to be properly backed up by a citation. I am guessing that you had a second attempt to get the article as you wanted it. Since then, another editor User:HelenOnline seems to have tried to follow my course and restore the same material. I think it is unwise to describe yourself as "white South African" - as you point out the photograph says that. I will attempt to edit the article to make it accurate and acceptable. As for the "french/dutch ancestry", any statement that cannot be backed up by a reliable source, is deletable by anyone. I shall now delete it. I see you have reverted my edit. Thank you for supplying a reference, however it actually supports the article as it stood before you reverted my edit. The reference contains the words "Where Alissa’s portrayal of Ahmadi’s history takes a great turn is in the eventual demographic switch: from the British, American, and South Asian residents to Kuwaitis and other Arabs. In the process, Ahmadi became a place of openness, both spatially and socially, where one interviewee remembers coming to cruise its wide streets in an open car". There were no statements about racial discrimination in the reference and the word 'Indian' did not occur. Even so, I will not make further edits to the article. thanks for you message, I'm rather not savvy with all this contribution to Wiki, but I did manage to start a book.

As to the article I accidentally posted to the Talk section, I simply couldn't figure out how to get it to an appropriate location. I thought I was adding it to the page for Ermengarde of Hesbaye, because as her direct descendant I wanted to spark interest in people adding their identities to a list of LIVING Descendants.

I just think it's wonderful to learn so much about my verified ancestors, but I think people would love to know of others who actually descended from those ancestors as well! THANKFULLY I saved the article, which took me a good deal of time to put together, so I'm going to ask you can I add it as an edit to the Ermengarde of Hesbaye page, or do you have issues with that?? It's just a part of ongoing history so I think it's important. And if need be I can put you in touch with our family genealogist, Candita Lee, while she's still living, her mother who did a great deal of the work decades ago, before computers, by hand, passed away a couple of years ago. So if verification is required, time is of the essence because Candi is the one in possession of the charts and was part of the process of collecting it all.

Hi! I was just curious as to why my four edits to Live and Let Die (film) were reverted. Was there really something wrong with them? I reverted because the correct term is 'drug lord' not 'drugs lord'. I have confirmed this by checking the WP article - 'drugs lord' gets redirected to 'drug lord'. According to this edit on the Licence to Kill article, "drugs lord" is acceptable and proper in British English. User:SchroCat was the one who redirected that link in the first place since all James Bond articles are written in British English. But, I know how it is, dealing with differences between American and British English, about which User:SchroCat has helped me get used to by undoing some of my changes. I think your unediting my revision was not fair. What I added was simply a fact that western nations did implement economic embargo against China, and as we can see from the current embargo against iran and North Korea that embargo did impact China economy in a significant way. It is also now a popular view that if there were no embargo, Chinese starvation would have lasted much shorter, as what has happened to Afraic nations. I assume you try to be fair with no personal political bias. If that is the case, you should keep my revision, or indicate anything specific inappropriate. Your accusation of "vandalism"

Hello:

You have been accusing me of vandalizing the Winnipeg webpage, and I want to explain my reason for my edits. There are sections of the page that depict my city in a negative light regarding crime. Not every city's crime history is reported on these pages, and I don't feel that Winnipeg's needs to be portrayed either. It will give people a bad impression of my city which does not need to happen. This is why I want the crime section gone. If other people from other cities want to have their city portrayed in a negative light, that is their choice. However, I don't agree and am being proactive in removing these unnecessary stats on the Wikipedia page.

By now you will see that another editor is replacing the material on Winnipeg that you are keen to see removed. Point No. 1 - Winnipeg is not being singled out for having its crime statistics recorded. Point No 2 - the material you are deleting is well verified by sources. Point No 3 - your desire to see your city well regarded is admirable. However, Wikipedia is about recording verifiable facts, rather than reflecting personal points of view, or presenting any place in a better light than the facts indicate. 23rd Awit Awards

Hi Jack, I removed a huge content from the article because its too much detail for a topic like this. For me, although Awit Awards is considered the Philippine version of the Grammys, it doesn't get a lot of interest from the readers so I decided to lessen the details as I would do to the next Awit Awards articles I would create. And it also seems that this article don't get a lot of unique edits from different users other than me. For me, creating these articles are really stressful if you're the only one whose editing it so I decided to unify and implement this smaller format to this article. Edit undone

I made an edit on Robin Roberts page, which was told to me as not constructive. Can you specify the details? Wp is particularly careful not to make false statements about living persons (See WP:BLP). Your statement was not provided with a reference directly following it. So I deleted it. These sort of comments are often added by vandals. I have since checked the article and the reference supporting your statement, and I acknowledge it is true. However, I stick by my revert, because someone's sexual orientation is not of such importance that it belongs in the lead paragraph, especially such a short one. You need to be very careful making statements like "This man is a first class fraud only". That is libel and gets thrown out of WP immediately. Also "His figures there were very ordinary" is an expression of your point of view only. See WP:POV. What you can do is edit out any statements you believe are false, and which are unsupported by a reliable reference. See WP:REF. Help with Speculation

Hi there, Jack. A little over a year ago I worked with another editor to make some improvements to the Speculation article and have been keeping an eye on the page since then, on behalf of the Managed Funds Association, for whom I am a consultant. Today, I noticed that an IP address editor had added a new Speculation#Example section to the article, which I don't believe belongs here. I saw that you'd undone a further edit to this section, and I was wondering if you'd take another look at it for me? While this is a good pop culture example of the meaning of the word speculation, it is not an example of financial speculation, which is actually the focus of this article.

Can you take a look and remove the section if you agree? I'd be WP:BOLD and make this change myself, however I stick to the "bright line" rule for COI editors and would rather not make any direct edits to the article. Cheers, WWB Too (Talk · COI) 18:17, 30 December 2013 (UTC)
