It was a one sentence article that, as per the rule, made no attempt to establish noteability. I'm clearly not the only one who thinks it should be gone, either, considering it's now up for AfD. --InShaneee 03:50, 2 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • It deserved to be speedied because, as per the rule, the article itself made no attempt to establish notability. I know Hawthorne Hights is a notable band, but I didn't try to speedy their article. I'm not going to discuss the merits of the article itself, though. I've already said my piece on the AfD page. --InShaneee 03:56, 2 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why the revert?

[edit]

Why did you revert Internet Gambling Prohibition Act? The contribution was perfectly good. --User At Work 13:55, 2 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, thanks for the message. I reverted that yesterday around the time when we hit the 1,000,000th article, so the vandalism was kind of intense at the time. I'm sorry I reverted it, but at first glance, it appeared to be a)out of the format typically required for Wikipedia articles and b}unreferenced. If you can find a reference for the material you put on and if you can add it in proper WP format, I think it will be perfectly good. JHMM13 (T | C) 18:18, 2 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Translation

[edit]

Hey, JHMM13. You told me to contact you via your talk page, and here I am. I wanted to ask, I completed the translation for Prisoner of Azkaban, in a sub page of my User Page. How do I add it to a normal Wikipedia article? --Wanna Know My Name? Later 15:39, 3 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, sorry about the delay in response. I just got on spring break and I was snowboarding all of yesterday. Nice job on the POA article! I don't know anything about Spanish translation, but it looks like you're blazing a new trail in terms of Spanish Harry Potter film articles. Before you translate the entire, thing you may want to check into the formats of different Wikipedias. For instance, there doesn't appear to be a Harry Potter portal on the Es-Wiki (at least none that I can easily find out), so you may want to take that top bit off the page. It's also important to note that the Spanish version of the films may have had different details than the English version (although this is probably incidental). Check around the Community Portal for both En-Wiki and Es-Wiki to get some help, but in the mean time, you can post it to the Spanish Wikipedia under the equivalent name in Spanish. Then you can link to it from the En version by following the format at the bottom of the page for other WP languages. If you have any questions, ask the Spanish translators first, then come to me if you're having trouble. I'm really not a translation expert. JHMM13 (T | C) 20:26, 5 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for supporting me in my request for adminship! It ended with a tally of 39/5/4, and I am now an admin. I'm glad to have earned the trust of the community, and I will make use of it responsibly. Of course, you can let me know of any comments or concerns you have.

Thank you, in particular, for being the first to support me on my RfA. I truly appreciated your eloquent remarks.

With a million articles in front of me, I'd better get mopping.

Thanks for your support in my RfA

[edit]

Just wanted to drop a quick note — nothing fancy! — to say thanks for your vote of confidence in my recent request for adminship. As you might have noticed it was unsuccessful; most objections related to my lack of experience. While I disagree that nearly 4000 edits, whether spread over two months or ten, constitutes a lack of experience, I respect the vote and will try again at a later date. I'm disappointed that I won't be able to help out in the meantime as much as I could with admin access, but again I appreciate your support and hope I'll have it the next time I am nominated. Thanks for participating in Wikiproject New Jersey. In an attempt to create articles for some of the non-existing pages related to New Jersey, NJCOTW was recently created to bring members of WP:NJ together to work collaboratively on a certain selected topic, which this week is List of Governors of New Jersey. Please help by nominating/voting/commenting on articles on WP:NJCOTW, or by helping to improve articles in the scope of the topic for the NJCOTW. AndyZ 00:45, 8 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

User talk

[edit]

Thank you for leaving a message on my talk page, however, as you did while suggesting, it would be best to leave editing of my page up to me. (Edit: The way I worded this comes off as rather mean... Sorry about that, no offense is intended) Charles 00:50, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

None taken. The point is that people can find the information in the history section anyway, so there's no hiding old edits. Keeping it easily accessible makes it easier for people in dispute resolution to comb through stuff. Incidentally, I'm going to stop by again in a little bit to ask you a few questions about some edits that have been made with regards to translation articles. I've gotten a few complaints, but for now, I don't know too much. Remember, I'm not an admin and I've got no "power" so you don't have to actually deal with me at all, but I think if we can all work this stuff out prior to getting admins involved, the better off everyone will be, and the better the quality of our articles will be :-). Thanks for the quick response. JHMM13 (T | C) 00:58, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Schools

[edit]

Schools should not be prodded as it is for uncontroversial deletions and all nominations of schools are fiercely controversial (and pretty certain to fail - 100% certain for high schools). The school you prodded had already been deprodded when I came across it. Thank you Osomec 00:55, 14 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Greer-cut.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{GFDL-self}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Shyam (T/C) 12:30, 14 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, Shyam. That image was uploaded by me such a long time ago that I can't even remember it. I'm almost positive it was an AP or Reuters image, so I'm uncertain about the copyright status. Incidentally, I wonder what the name of that template you used on my page is. I've seen it around and I always felt it was rather harsh and imposing, so I'd like to leave a note on the template talk page. Thanks, JHMM13 (T | C) 19:02, 14 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your response, please tag it appropriately or provide sufficient information on copyright status, followed by removing no souce tag to make avoid deletion. The tag used is: {{Image source}}. Regards, Shyam (T/C) 19:34, 14 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the response. I think it should be deleted as I can't exactly remember where I got it from and at the time I was ignorant as to what Wikipedia's image copyright policy was. Thanks, JHMM13 (T | C) 19:36, 14 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I am sorry that I didn't get all of the vandalism. However, I am writing to address your comments on my talk page. You write as if you have never made any mistakes before, it is precisely because of this uncollegial attitude why people leave wikipedia. I suggest in the future you watch the tome of your comments. --Scaife (Talk) Don't forget Hanlon's Razor 19:24, 14 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry you took it that way, but what would you have rather had? I told you what the problem was, why that problem was a problem, and a suggestion for the future. I don't feel I was speaking down to you, but I'm not going to leave out information I would tell any other user in this circumstance just because you've been around longer or made the mistake before. If you make a mistake, you deserve precisely the same "warning" (for lack of a better word) as someone who made that same mistake with their first edit. JHMM13 (T | C) 19:34, 14 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Note - this is the message in question copied from Scaife's talk page:
Hey, just wanted to give you a heads up that your edit to Islam could have used a little more in-depth analysis than what you gave. Using Popups, you reverted to a similarly vandalized version of the page. This was probably more dangerous to the content of the article because people might have already assumed later on that you covered all the vandalism done by that IP user. In the future, I suggest you really get into the page history or use Popups more wisely. Thanks, JHMM13 (T | C) 19:18, 14 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Descriptive edit summaries.

[edit]

We received an email at info-en from a newbie asking why you reverted edits to Sedbury. I can see that the last edit was a copyvio but the user who did it and later checked the history didn't understand. Please use more descriptive edit summaries in the future. -- Jeandré, 2006-03-18t19:07z

Aside from the pretty clear copyvio, this section was an attack on a person:
It is home to Wyedean School the school attended by Joanna Rowling author of the Harry Potter Books. She lived in the neighbouring village of Tutshill. Her mother worked at the school and her character Professor Snape is said to be based on a teacher of the school called Mr John Nettleship.
While I agree that she did attend Wyedean School, she has never said anything about her basing the character of Severus Snape on anybody. In fact, she addressed this issue when rumors arose about the inspiration for the character Gilderoy Lockhart. Notice how she says "For obvious reasons I am not going to identify the person in question - however irritating he was, he does not deserve that..." She is more consistent than anybody and does not give away her inspirations easily. Here it says "One of the influences for Snape was a 'scary' teacher she had when she was 9 years old (Tutshill, near Chepstow, South Wales)." Conversations with JK Rowling, p.17. She does not mention the name of the teacher and any such mention on Wikipedia is either spiteful or unresearched. That, plus the fact that the person spelled her name wrong made it seem like the editor was uninformed and the edit deserved to be reverted. Next time, however, I will look to retain any good information. Thanks for the message, but I reccomend you suggest to this user to use better (or any) sources to back up his information in the future. JHMM13 (T | C) 19:49, 18 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the explanation. I don't have a problem with the revert itself: I ofcourse agree with the removal of the copyvio, and explained that to the person who emailed. He/she was not the person who made the Rowling edit (the removal of which I also didn't have a problem with, it not being sourced). I didn't know that was an personal attack, having not read any of the Potter books or knowning what Snape is like. An edit summary of something like "rv <http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.asp?compid=15758> copyvio and unsourced personal attack against Nettleship." would have reduced the confusion. -- Jeandré, 2006-03-18t20:06z
You are, of course, absolutely right. Thanks for the discussion, and I'm glad this is now clarified! JHMM13 (T | C) 20:20, 18 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, thanks for bringing that article to my attention, but I haven't really got the time to read it. Why did you contact me about it? JHMM13 (T | C) 22:16, 19 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. I contacted you because you had previously voted on a similar AfD debate ("Unitary Islamic Bosnia") and because you're not from the Balkans. I'm worried that the issue is on course to become another partisan debate between Serbs and other peoples, where the Serbian POV would inevitably win out due to their numerical superiority on wikipedia. I was hoping that you and other users could approach the issue without any prejudices and give a fair and balanced vote. I hope you understand my intentions better now and am sorry if I originally appeared too random. Asim Led 22:47, 19 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ah I understand now. Well I will see if I can vote on it if I have some time, but right now I'm pretty busy :-D. Thanks again for the message! JHMM13 (T | C) 22:53, 19 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My handling of User:Ass Burgler

[edit]

I appreciate your watching Wikipedia to make sure that new editors are greeted civally. However, I think you are misunderstanding the situation. The article that the vandal created, Ondo the living legend was a particularly serious form of vandalism. If you cannot view the deleted edits I can post them here. The first time the page was created I warned the user with a more severe warning than I usually give vandals. The article was then reated a second time, including a personal attack against me. I considered not blocking because I was too involved, but decided to block anyway because, with the rest of the content of that article, I would have blocked anyway. I am also concerned about the user's name. I think it is nearly inappropriate enough to block on site, and some admins would have. I probably should have given a better warning to the user, and I apologize for my part in causing this problem, but I hope that you are satisfied with this explanation. Academic Challenger 07:44, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot, I am now completely satisfied. I will remove my complaint from ArbCom as you have adequately shown me the reasoning behind these actions. I only went there because it appeared you were not answering my request, and perhaps I was a bit hasty. Thank you again, and I hope to see you around! [edit]

Please see Wikipedia's no personal attacks policy. Comment on content, not on the contributor; personal attacks damage the community and deter users. Note that continued personal attacks may lead to blocks for disruption. Please stay cool and keep this in mind while editing. Thank you.

Please try to keep all discussion about the canidate. --Masssiveego 21:36, 26 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I did not make personal attacks on this user. I called into question his judgment about RfAs considering previous votes. JHMM13 (T | C) 22:27, 26 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"Based on this user's vote in several other RfAs, I sincerely question his judgment. JHMM13 (T | C) 08:46, 26 March 2006 (UTC)"

The user in question attacks my credibility and competency to vote. This RFA is about Gryffindor. Therefore the user is both off topic, and commited a personal attack to try an discredit my vote with supposingly what I have done previously. Which has no reelevence what so ever to the current vote, or the 3rr violation committed by Gryffindor. In effect the above user has attacked my "judgment" as being wrong, therefore is attacking me, intead of the issue of the 3rr violation. For which the no personal attack warning is clearly warranted, and the user is question is asked to stop attacking votes via my voting history. --Masssiveego 21:00, 27 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi JH. I was going to drop a message to you about this, but it seems Massiveego already did, albeit a little heavy-handedly. When you see an oppose vote on an RFA, the best thing to do is to just let it go. The only time it would even be worth considering commenting on an oppose vote was if it's by a blatant troll vandal (which Massiveego is not), or if it contains an obvious factual inaccuracy (his does not). His voting history is different, but drawing conclusions about whether or not a vote should be counted is a job the bureaucrats are well-qualified to make, and something they do for every RFA. All the best. Proto||type 11:45, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

images in sig

[edit]

Please consider removing the images from your signature, as that practice is considered by many to be something to avoid. -- Netoholic @ 14:11, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, thanks for the message. As it is, WP:SIG is only a guideline, and not a Wikipedia policy. It is, therefore, a reccomendation for conduct, but violation of these guidelines are not against Wikipedia policy...they're sort of just unwritten rules. Here's the section on images:
There are several objections to having images in signatures. In particular, they are said to cause server slowdown, and to serve no purpose in an encyclopedia project other than vanity in addition to making pages more difficult to read. There have been some calls for banning them entirely; some people have objected to such a ban, arguing it would stifle creativity.
I'm in the second group there. I don't think the images in my sig really drag the server all that badly, and I think when people see the U.S. and German flags next to each other, they know better with whom they're dealing. Please feel free to respond in my talk page. Thanks, JHMM13 (T | C) 19:30, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think you're acting very responsibly by dismissing this guideline. Guidelines are items which very many Wikipedians agree on, and generally should be followed unless there is good reason. While they are not currently baanned (as in, you won't be blocked for violating it), it's still a good idea to strongly consider whether your images are totally necessary. I'll say that, except for seeing your sig on a random talk page, I don't know anything about you. I remain unsure what your flags are meant to communicate, and I strongly question whether there is a need to communicate whatever the point is on every post you make. Using the flags as you (and several other people do) definitely does affect server performance and page loading for a user. Opening up a long talk page is dramatically faster if participants avoid images. I encourage you to use your user page for a creative outlet and leave your signature as simple as minimally necessary. -- Netoholic @ 19:59, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This article looks pretty much like a commercial to me. I think it should be a candidate for deletion. Do you agree? --Mmounties (Talk) 05:18, 31 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

JHMM13/Archive4, thank you for supporting me in my recent RfA. Although it did not succeed as no consensus was declared (final: 65/29/7), I know that there is always an opportunity to request adminship again. If and when that day comes, I hope you will once again support me. If at any time I make any mistakes or if you would like to comment on my contributions to Wikipedia, you are more than welcome to do so. Chic

[edit]

I posted this on the CHIC page.... I just wanted to make sure you saw it.

Seeing that even Nile Rodgers' own site is spotty about capitalizing the name Chic, it appears as though its status in all-caps is revisionist history. Although it appears on some album covers in all caps, that is a graphical device. Throughout the media, in myriad articles, it is not capitalized. Furthermore, on certain albums such as Chic-ism' and Chic Freak it appears on the album cover with only a capital C. Chic is not an acronym; the letters don't stand for anything, unlike ABBA, which stands for Agnetha, Benny, Björn, Annifrid. This whole capitalization affair appears to be fanism, and the pages and their disambig redirects should be reverted to the way they were before. Iamvered 13:22, 4 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The "recent changes patrol" is just the loosely held-together group of Wikipedians who "patrol" the recent changes page. The old-fashioned way of doing it is by just clicking on the "recent changes" button on the left of your screen and scouring through the latest changes to see if they are done by vandals. This is the way I do it because I find it takes me longer to use the programs they have out there to monitor RC, which I believe you can find on the RCP page. As you might be able to imagine, this is a rather impossible task, which makes it fortunate that there are a sizeable amount of people out there who want to do it, like me, for instance, until recently. What you want to look for depends on your level of experience. You could, theoretically, click on every change you see and check to see if it's a vandal (or just poorly done) edit of some sort. This is a bit time-consuming, so what I've done in the past was create a hierarchy of things to look for:
  1. Blatant vandal edits are pretty easy to spot. When Wikipedia is "under attack" by a particular vandal (such as the Squidward vandal) using bots and an IP range or five, it's going to be obvious. However, these problems are usually sorted out quickly by admins, so it might just help to not get in their way or to slow them down by eating up the bandwidth. These types of vandals don't come every day.
  2. New pages almost always come first in my book. If I see the little "N," and especially if it's done by a new user (see two down), I check it out to see if it's for real or some sort of attack/non-notable page/or any other of the things that fall under WP:AFD or WP:CSD. However, if the page is created by a known user who includes an adequate description in his summary like "redirect page," then I won't worry about it.
  3. IP address changes are next for me. These are quite frequent and you'll never be able to get all of them, but the more that are caught, the less vandalism there is on Wikipedia. It might make more sense for you to not focus too much on big articles you see getting vandalized (like if it's an edit to "George Bush" by an IP address with no summary) because most big pages are monitored by veteran vandal fighers and admins. Also, it's important to get properly acquainted with the idea that not all IP users are malicious in nature, so when you revert a page, be sure to do a little bit of research in the page history to find the last good edit. Also, if you find another bit of vandalism, try to be thorough and get personally edit that out.
  4. New user changes are not always going to catch vandals, so that's why it shows up here at the bottom of the list, but it might be useful to track these guys too. Not sure how to spot a new user? Nine times out of ten, people unfamiliar with Wikipedia will go a while before they make a user page for themselves, so their name will appear as a red link instead of a blue one on the RC page. As I said above, pages created by new users are a priority over just random changes they've made.
  5. Dates are another one I'll throw in here because some of the most vandalized pages on Wikipedia are the ones for years/months/days. Someone will come in and add their name under "Births in 1988" or "June 29 - John met Sarah." These all fail Wikipedia:Notability in some way or another, though be careful about notability...it is a very hotly debated issue on this site, and it always will be.
So that's all I can tell you about the RC patrol. To become one, all you have to do is start checking out the RC page. There's no need to sign up for anything, but you can if you want to...I think they've got a "signup sheet" over there somewhere. Remember, though, Wikipedia has very strict guidelines about dealing with new users and the "powers" of a vandal-fighter. We are not to ever bite the newbies, and there is almost always a test template that can be put on a user's talk page instead of a personalized warning. This usually keeps tensions low and gives the vandal more information than you might have remembered. Also, if you attack a user, even if he is a vandal, you are also, in one way, considered a vandal, so it is important to remember to keep your cool and refer to admins if things ever get out of hand. It may help, also, to use the {{welcome}} or {{welcomeip}} templates along with your vandalism warning to ease any potential tensions. If you have any other questions, I'll be on Wikipedia from time to time, but don't expect an immediate response. Good hunting! JHMM13 (T | C) 14:25, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have some overall concerns about this article. Primarily the notablity of the subject matter. There are very few links from other sites to the external references, and often the primary links are only to each other. I am eliciting comments since you have edited on this page. See my comments on the talk page. Trödel 23:02, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ciao! Allora, io di solito vengo in iternet (e accendo messenger) o verso le 14.00-15.00 (quindi verso le 9.00-10.00 da voi) e dalle 19.00 alle 20.00-21.00 (quindi dalle 14.00 alle 15.00-16.00 da voi, penso) premettendo che abbiamo una differenza "temporale" di 5 ore. Tu invece, quando ti connetti?

Traslation!: Hi! Well, I usually sail internet (and I turn on messenger) or around 14.00-15.00 (that should be 9.00-10.00 in USA) and from the 19.00 to 20.00-21.00 (so around 14 until 15.00-16.00 in USA, I think...) but I think that we have a difference of 5 hours. And You? When do you turn on messenger?

Bye (I have read the message :D ) [Filnik | Talk! | Discus] 12:10, 12 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I don't know why you think it would be a good idea to escalate a licensing dispute. Please a) treat users with licensing concerns with courtesy and patience and b) try to appreciate, rather than condemn, someone who is using the Wiki editing system and engaging in discussion with our users -- they are doing us a favour by engaging with us this way. If you cannot do these things, please avoid inserting yourself into discussions about the licensing status of images with concerned parties. I want to emphasise that this is not just a matter of WP:BITE, but it is also simply terrible judgement to fail to distinguish between someone adding profanity to an article and someone trying inexpertly to "fix" a license statement. Jkelly 17:04, 26 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not "lecturing you on WP:BITE". Look, is it more important to you to vent your frustration that this person is not following Wikipedia guidelines, policies, procedures and unwritten rules, or is it more important to you to resolve the dispute without it going to the Foundation office and demonstrating that Wikipedia is a hostile environment? If it is really the former, please just avoid getting involved. Jkelly 18:04, 26 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The problem has been taken care of after I posted it on the administrator noticeboard, User:Nunh-huh took care of it. I can completely understand your worry, it is indeed very unpleasant. Pleased to be of service, how did your move go? Gryffindor 16:28, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Devdowd.gif. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Chowbok 03:23, 19 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
