Checkuser
[edit]Is there are particular reason that Wikipedia:Requests for checkuser/Case/Sbhushan hasn't been listed yet? The Behnam 06:01, 9 August 2007 (UTC)
- Never mind, my bad. Not being familiar with the checkuser procedures, I assumed that "listed" meant that it was on the "Outstanding requests" list on the main checkuser page, but that doesn't appear to be the case. Do you know what "listed" means in this context? The Behnam 06:21, 9 August 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, I realized that it is there. When I first saw the page, it said "Checkuser requests to be listed." I assumed that this meant that it was not on the main page (without checking), and added it. I undid this when I realized that it was already there. Now I just don't know what exactly "Checkuser requests to be listed" means, as I thought (wrongly) that it meant that it wasn't yet listed on the main page. The Behnam 06:54, 9 August 2007 (UTC)
- Oh, I see. I determined that I was "wrong" by checking the case above Sbushan's, but apparently the removal was forgotten there as well. Thanks for the information. The Behnam 07:02, 9 August 2007 (UTC)

It got declined, but you had some interesting observations. Perhaps a "suspected sockpuppet" page is warranted? The Behnam 00:34, 10 August 2007 (UTC)
Rgveda Dating
[edit]Please see on Talk:Rgveda : Dating the Rgveda : Suggestions -Vinay Jha 21:57, 12 August 2007 (UTC)
I have recently cleaned up the article, expanded sections, added pictures and an info box, and deleted lots of redundant crap. Do you know of anyone knowledgeable in the practical combat applications of the style that would be willing to contribute? They would, of course, need to provide good sources for whatever material they introduce. --Ghostexorcist 10:31, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
Foreign influence on Chinese martial arts
[edit]Whatever happened to this article? All that I have when I click on it now is a re-direct towards the old "Bodhidharma, Shaolin Kung fu, and the disputed India connection" article. Djma12 (talk) 22:22, 25 August 2007 (UTC)
- If you'll remember, I am hardly a supporter of Freedom skies' edits. Heck, I was the one who slapped on the original merge tag. However, the article in its current form makes no sense. It's a counter-argument to an article that has been completely replaced. I'm sure we can work together to make this a real merge rather than a whole scale replace. Djma12 (talk) 03:12, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for the clarification. I never knew the entirety of the article's history. I agree that the original "Foreign Influence" article, especially when I found it back in March, was a horrible POV fork. I thought the article finally being settled on around July, however, was starting to become a real "Foreign Influence" article. Sure, it ranted too much about Bodhidharma, but it had good sections on possible Mongolian, Greek, etc... influences.
- Long story short, I think a real "Foreign Influences" article might actually be educational -- given that it adequately cites sources and isn't some POV fork by hindu nationalists. What do you think?
- Best regards, Djma12 (talk) 13:24, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
- You make some good points. How do you feel about nominating the article for AfD then? Djma12 (talk) 23:35, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
China photos
[edit]Stan Henning was nice enough to send me the link to photos from his recent trip to China and Mongolia. It has a couple of pictures of martial artists, but most of them are of landscape and beautiful statues. You've read the Water Margin right? Well, one photos is of a large statue of Sagacious Lu ripping the tree out of the ground. If you want the link, I can give it to you. --Ghostexorcist 21:23, 30 September 2007 (UTC)
- Don't worry. I figured that you were busy and would get back to me eventually. I have sent the link to your email. Enjoy! --Ghostexorcist 22:54, 6 October 2007 (UTC)

Shahar's book
[edit]I totally forgot about that. I found Gene Ching's link on the Kung Fu mag forum and just bought it myself. Thanks for reminding me! I need to contact Shahar again to see if he ever expanded upon one of the lectures he did. Here is an abstract ...
Magic Warfare in Nineteenth-Century Fiction and History: The Armor of the Golden Bell
Meir Shahar, Tel Aviv University
The turn of the twentieth-century witnessed a spectacular growth in the popular genre of martial-arts fiction. During this period scores of new novels, celebrating the pugilistic skills and the superior swordsmanship of courageous warriors, were published. What was the relation between this literary development and the actual practice of the martial-arts during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries? Is it possible that the growth of martial-arts fiction mirrors the expansion of martial-arts practice during the period in question? Or, conversely, is it possible that martial-arts fiction shaped the development of the martial-arts themselves by promulgating the practice of specific martial techniques described in novels?
This paper will address the interplay of fiction and history in the practice of Chinese martial-arts by an examination of one type of martial-arts exercise known as the Armor of the Golden Bell (Jinzhong zhao). The Armor of the Golden Bell, which has been widely used both in the actual practice of the martial arts and in the imaginary realm of fiction, demonstrates the interdependence of imaginary practice and social performance in the realm of the martial arts. In addition, the Armor of the Golden Bell illustrates the significance of magic in the practice of the martial arts. The term "Armor of the Golden Bell" covers a spectrum of practices, ranging from physical exercises meant to strengthen the body, to magic techniques intended to make one invulnerable to swords, spears, and even bullets. Thus the Armor of the Golden Bell demonstrates that in the realm of the Chinese martial arts the lines separating fiction from history, and physical exercise from magic, are thin indeed.

My copy arrived last week. It is one hell of a scholarly achievement! I am surprised that Shahar did not connect the "shoe holding Bodhidharma" legend to the taoist legend of the "corpse-untying" method of immortality (see here, I added this info to the article). Basically, a person feigns being sick and apparently dies. He is burried, but is later seen in another province hundreds of miles away. When his coffin is opened, all that is present is a shoe, sword, bamboo pole, or just clothes (which had been bewitched to look like a body, but reverted back). Ge Hong told many hagiographies of taoist saints who used this method to escape execution or to just dissappear. --Ghostexorcist (talk) 23:46, 4 March 2008 (UTC)

- I'm once again amazed at your researching skills (I saw your post at user talk:Pyrotec). Generally speaking, I'll be staying away from the 'pre-history' sections from now on following a harrowing week in gunpowder. If only a discussion like the one user:Pyrotec started, or an argument that you initiated, would have occurred originally then it would have saved me a lot of time and frustration.

Gunpowder
[edit]Sorry, I was getting a bit p*ssed off. There is an edit war on Gunpowder and the History of gunpowder and I'm trying to remain impartial. Meatwaggon is never going to accept Encyclopaedia Britannica 2008 as a credible source on gunpowder; and I consider that one of the three blockquotes recently added to be (mostly) wrong; but I have some sympathy with what he is trying to do in protecting the integrity of those two articles, but not necessarily the means. I also think that much of the "potted summary" information that Vtria 08 is trying to add to the Gunpowder and the History of gunpowder articles is useful. He also appears to have problems with the Tea article for similar reasons (you appear to be actively involved in that discussion). I'm hoping the edit-war can be stopped and that some of the information that Vtria 08 is trying to add to Gunpowder and the History of gunpowder can be added from other sources that Meatwaggon is likely to regard as more acceptable.Pyrotec (talk) 22:07, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit]Credible author
[edit]Hello. A credible authors' reference is being "overrided" by edit-warring. I recently tried to add to the telescope article but this editor seems to think that his opinion overrides a VERY credible author in Mr. Richard Powers. I've been blocked before for edit-warring recently, so I don't want this to be another incident on my record.
Anyway, the other editor seemed to have asked his friend-type editors to form a consensus, so I will do the same. The Islamic connection here is, Al-Haytham. He is FUNDAMENTAL to the telescope and the FATHER of optics. By definition, the summary can include him since the radio and electro-magnetic telescopes are derogatory to the average person looking at the article; I wanted to add it to the history section since it looked cleaner. Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice
[edit]Hi,
As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.
We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.
You may also wish to attend the next London meet-up at which both of these issues will be discussed. If you can't attend this meetup, you may want to watch Wikipedia:Meetup, for updates on future meets.
We look forward to hearing from you soon, and we send our apologies for this automated intrusion onto your talk page!

looking for info for an essay
[edit]I have to do an argumentative paper in my English class and I was thinking about doing it on how Bodhidharma's connection to Shaolin arts is a myth. I've already got LOTS of info from Meir Shahar and one article from Stan Henning, but I need more. You mentioned similar work done by Tang Hou and Brian Kennedy in a previous discussion on the Chinese martial arts page. Could you give me some citations? I realize Tang Hou was the first modern scholar who brought the dubious nature of the Sinew-Changing Classic to light. From what I understand from the Yi Jin Jing article, the source info is in Chinese. Do you know of an English translation anywhere? --Ghostexorcist (talk) 01:51, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
