Growth team newsletter #21
Welcome to the twenty-first newsletter from the Growth team!
New project: Positive reinforcement
- The Growth team started a new project: Positive reinforcement. We want newcomers to understand there is an interest in regularly editing Wikipedia, and we want to improve new editor retention.
- We asked users from Arabic, Bangla, Czech and French Wikipedia about their feedback. Some people participated at mediawiki.org as well.
- We summarized the initial feedback gathered from these community discussions, along with how we plan to iterate based on that feedback.
- The first Positive Reinforcement idea is a redesign of the impact module: incorporating stats, graphs, and other contribution information. This idea received the widest support, and we plan to start our work based on the design illustrated on the side.
- Please let us know what you think of this project, in any language.
For mentors
- We have worked on two new features, to inform them about the mentorship:
Scaling
- "Add a link" available at more wikis ― Add a link feature has been deployed to more wikis: Catalan Wikipedia, Hebrew Wikipedia, Hindi Wikipedia, Korean Wikipedia, Norwegian Bokmål Wikipedia, Portuguese Wikipedia, Simple English Wikipedia, Swedish Wikipedia, Ukrainian Wikipedia, Abkhazian Wikipedia, Achinese Wikipedia, Adyghe Wikipedia, Afrikaans Wikipedia, Akan Wikipedia, Alemannisch Wikipedia, Amharic Wikipedia, Aragonese Wikipedia, Old English Wikipedia, Syriac Wikipedia, Egyptian Arabic Wikipedia, Asturian Wikipedia, Atikamekw Wikipedia, Avaric Wikipedia, Aymara Wikipedia, Azerbaijani Wikipedia, South Azerbaijani Wikipedia. This is part of the progressive deployment of this tool to more Wikipedias. The communities can configure locally how this feature works.
- "Add an image" available at more wikis ― Add an image feature will be deployed to more wikis: Greek Wikipedia, Indonesian Wikipedia, Polish Wikipedia, Chinese Wikipedia. These communities will be able to configure locally how this feature works. [2]
Suggested edits
- Selecting topics ― We have created an "AND" filter to the list of topics at Special:Homepage. This way, newcomers can decide to select very specific topics ("Transportation" AND "Asia") or to have a broader selection ("Transportation" OR "Asia"). At the moment this feature is tested at pilot wikis.
- Changes for Add a link ― We have built several improvements that came from community discussion and from data analysis. They will be available soon at the wikis.
- Algorithm improvements ― The algorithm now avoids recommending links in sections that usually don't have links and for first names. Also, it now limits each article to only having three link suggestions by default (limited to the highest accuracy suggestions of all the available ones in the article).
- User experience improvements ― We added a confirmation dialog when a user exits out of suggestion mode prior to making changes. We also improved post-edit dialog experience and allow newcomers to browse through task suggestions from the post-edit dialog.
- Community configuration ― We allow communities to set a maximum number of links per article via Special:EditGrowthConfig.
- Future change for Add a link feature ― We will suggest underlinked articles in priority. [3]
- Patrolling suggested edits ― Some users at Arabic Wikipedia, Spanish Wikipedia, and Russian Wikipedia told us that "Add a link" and "Add an image" edits can be challenging to patrol. We are now brainstorming improvements to help address this challenge. We have already some ideas and we started some work to address this challenge. If you have any thoughts to add about the challenges of reviewing these tasks or how we should improve these tasks further, please let us know, in any language.
Community configuration
Communities can configure how the features work, using Special:EditGrowthConfig.
- Communities can set the maximum number of "add an image" suggested tasks a newcomer can complete daily. [4]
- Future change: allow communities to customize the "add a link" quality gate threshold easily, using Special:EditGrowthConfig. [5]

G11s
Hi, Itcouldbepossible. I think we need to have a word about some of your recent G11 taggings. I just reviewed 15 of them. I deleted 3 under G11 and 2 under U5; the other 10 I declined. Some of those 10 might be pages that some admins would delete under U5 (personally I'm quite conservative on that one), but none of them were G11, and some of them were nowhere near it. User:Jaywalker1995/sandbox in particular jumps out.
Please be more careful when tagging under G11. Recall the language of the criterion: This applies to pages that are exclusively promotional and would need to be fundamentally rewritten to serve as encyclopedia articles, rather than advertisements
. If something is just a bit of a puff-piece, that doesn't make it G11-eligible; it means it probably shouldn't be an article, but there's a lot of middle ground between "shouldn't be an article" and "should be speedily deleted". -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she|they|xe) 12:27, 24 June 2022 (UTC)
- @Tamzin Well, I am quite acquainted with this type of issues that have been raised. On Liz's talk page we had a talk regarding this matter. There also she had declined a few CSD G11s, but were later deleted by other admins. In this case also, the same thing happened. But I didn't imagine that 10 of them will be declined. But you know, out of the 10 that you declined, 8 remains, and the rest were CSDed by others and were deleted too. Take for example, User:Juan88888888/sandbox. I had CSDed it first. You declined it. Then Patient Zero CSDed it, and it was deleted by Fastily. Regarding Jaywalker's sandbox, yes, that was a wrong tagging. I should have read the whole thing more carefully. But you know what, the filter turned out 87 pages, out of which I CSDed only 32. I went through all the pages that turned up in the filter, and CSDed those for which it would be applicable. That was a mistake I understand. But out of the 32 I CSDed that day, only 8 remain. I know that is 75% accuracy, but that is only mathematically. I don't know why you declined CSD for User:Jubaermahmudbd/sandbox. It should have been a U5. Clearly speaking about oneself in a social media like manner. Pages like this always are accepted for U5 deletions, atleast that is what always happened in my case. I always used to CSD pages like this, and it used to get accepted. Next is Draft:Olivier Nameche. I am sure if I retag it it would be accepted for CSD G11. Don't know what your opinon is. Then again User:MrManasharma is bound to be a G11. But you declined it yet again. So I think 3 should have been deleted. The rest 5 were mistakes from my part. I know that is actually a lot, and I would try and be careful, and would be happy if you comment about the pages which I have already mentioned that should have gone for CSD. Itcouldbepossible Talk 07:57, 25 June 2022 (UTC)
- @Tamzin And now User:DZ2022/sandbox, has also been deleted by Jimfbleak which had been CSDed by me before by CX Zoom and before you declined it. So was I wrong in tagging the pages? I think a few more can also be deleted. What is your opinion? Itcouldbepossible Talk 14:26, 25 June 2022 (UTC)
- Sorry to disturb you again Tamzin, but I have something to tell you. Both User:Jubaermahmudbd/sandbox and Draft:Olivier Nameche has been deleted by Jimfbleak. He agrees that they were promotional. For User:MrManasharma, he removed the social media like material. Waiting for your views. Regards, Itcouldbepossible Talk 05:12, 26 June 2022 (UTC)
- ICBP, you've pinged me three times to the same thread since my last edit. Rest assured, I will reply to this when I'm next available. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she|they|xe) 05:23, 26 June 2022 (UTC)
- Sorry but I thought there was some problems with the pings. Itcouldbepossible Talk 05:41, 26 June 2022 (UTC)
- You can enable successful/unsuccessful ping notifications in Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-echo.As to the matter of the G11s, as I said in my first message here,
Some of those 10 might be pages that some admins would delete under U5 (personally I'm quite conservative on that one)
. While, sure, sometimes a user tags something as G3 that the reviewing admin decides to delete as G2, or as A7 that the reviewing admin decides to delete as G11, if you are routinely applying CSD tags that don't apply, that is a problem, even if some other CSD might apply to those pages. One reason that it is a problem is that with each tag you are warning the users for violating a policy they haven't violated. You need to think about how things come across to new users. If we are going to be deleting their pages, they should be warned under the right criterion. So: If you want to delete a page as a U5, tag it as a U5. I'll be incredibly blunt here: Almost all U5 taggings are actioned, including many pages that the policy very clearly excludes from U5. I think non-admins would be shocked to see some of what passes for U5-eligible, according to a small number of taggers and patrolling admins who've turned the category into something that would be unrecognizable to those who participated in enacting U5 as a policy provision; I know I'm not the only admin who feels that way. (In fact, every admin I've spoken to except for those who regularly patrol the category seems to feel that way.) Now, I'm not saying that is or isn't the case with any of these in particular, but... I wouldn't read much into a U5, in terms of whether a page actually is or isn't policy-compliant. But, in summation: Don't tag a potentially U5-eligible page as a G11, when it isn't a G11, and be surprised when an admin just declines the G11 and cautions you for mis-tagging. No admin is under an obligation to apply a different CSD. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she|they|xe) 15:41, 27 June 2022 (UTC)- Really sorry for this late reply Tamzin but I was busy for a couple of days. I got what you said. And thanks for the successful/unsuccessful pings settings as well. Regards, Itcouldbepossible Talk 11:01, 10 July 2022 (UTC)

- Not all admins apply WP:CSD the exact same way, as you may remember from your discussion with Liz. ––FormalDude talk 15:45, 26 June 2022 (UTC)

Request on 15:11:19, 26 June 2022 for assistance on AfC submission by AnamikaWrites
Hi,
Please could you help me understand why you believe Pratik Sen is not notable to have a Wikipedia page? He is an extremely popular actor, very well known and his notability extends beyond the Bengali speaking population. Also could you help me understand the reliable, primary and secondary sources of reference please? - The references I have provided, have been scrutinized and cautiously selected with reliability at the core. - To ensure there was no hearsay or possible paid news, I cross referenced the references tagged with interviews by Pratik Sen (many of which are for TV channels or publications and are available on YouTube) to validate accuracy. Since YouTube links are not allowed, I could not attach the same to substantiate accuracy of content. - Is it possible to advise which of the references seem unreliable? And why? - The contents of the article I have tagged has neither puffery, exaggeration or glorification of Pratik Sen.
Since Pratik Sen works primarily in Bengali language cinema and serials, references are in Bengali dailies / online versions apart from English media.
Look forward to your insights. Very keen to have this article on Wikipedia as I do believe Pratik Sen has credentials like his contemporaries (who have Wikipedia pages) to support it.
Thanks & Regards ----
AnamikaWrites (talk) 15:11, 26 June 2022 (UTC)
- @AnamikaWrites Sorry Anamika for replying this late. Actually the problem with the draft is that, it doesn't have reliable sources. Take for example, reference no. 3,4, 5 and 6 in your draft, (among many others). They doesn't look like secondary sources and most of them look like are WP:SPONSORED. So, they cannot be accepted here on Wikipedia. Regarding notability, they might be (and is obviously) notable in the Bengali industry, but being notable elsewhere and being considered notable here on Wikipedia are two different things. There are many pages that are being deleted everyday because of notability issues everyday, even though they are highly notable to the outside world. They must meet WP:GNG. That is why making a biography related article on Wikipedia is the toughest thing. Moreover, there are other problems as well. The Filmography section should not contain Aany information about any non notable film as well. And it should be cleaner as well. I could have done that myself as well, but am a little busy. Could edit Wikipedia for over an week. Anyway, but also, the awards section should not include any non notable awards. Non-notable in the sense that they should have their own separate article on Wikipedia to be considered notable. Next the problem is that many of the nominations aren't sourced. They need to be sourced for verification purposes. This is all that I can help you in. If you still need more help, then you can check the Teahouse, and ask questions there regarding improving the draft. Please don't submit the draft again and again without making any improvements, as if it is once rejected, then it would be quite tough to approve the draft for submission again. Speedy deletion nomination of Category:KFC by country
A tag has been placed on Category:KFC by country indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself. Liz Read!
