Lara, Undelete Pio.gif. That image is not copyrighted - despite what Betacommandbot says. Therefore it is not "unfree" under Wikipedia guidelines. (SQL and I are disussing this very thing on my talk page at this moment) Thank you KoshVorlon ".. We are ALL Kosh..." 15:33, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

Lara, The image is not copyrighted therefore not in violation of wiki policies. You apparently don't understand that part.

THE DAMN IMAGE IS NOT COPYRIGHTED - UNDELETE IT OR I WILL BRING IT BACK

Once again ....this image is not in violation --- if anything , yourself & betacommand are enforcing "policy" on basis of a belief which is , in itself, against policy. KoshVorlon ".. We are ALL Kosh..." 15:38, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

Behind the times?

I noticed this, and I think it is an overly defensive response. How about working with people to improve the current situation, rather than defending the status quo? You say "The fact that the March deadline is being questioned is laughable." Have you read this and this? In the first thread, Anthere (the Chair of the WMF Board) has admitted that the wording of the resolution may indeed be unclear. In that light, your comment that people questioning the March deadline is "laughable" looks a bit over the top. Would you consider retracting that? you also say that "Wikipedia is the free encyclopedia. Those who desire to bring non-free content into it carry the burden to do so within policy." - It has been reaffirmed many times that free should not be emphasised over encyclopedia, and that encyclopedia should not be emphasised over free. The two go together thus: free encyclopedia. The corollary to your statement is that: "Those who desire to delete encyclopedic content carry the burden to do so within policy." There are historic, educational, clearly OK under fair use, images being deleted along with all the other pictures. I don't have the time or resources to save them all. Would you consider helping out with that, or are you and others just going to defend BetacommandBot regardless of any appeals to improve the encyclopedia by making sure the historic pictures don't get lost? Carcharoth (talk) 17:43, 17 February 2008 (UTC)

From reading over that, the deadline does exist. So I'm not retracting it. I'm also not changing my view that if people want to bring non-free content into the free encyclopedia, it is their burden to do so under policy. I fix images that BCB tags on articles I'm involved with and those I come across when clearing CAT:CSD. That's the extent of my desired involvement which is why I support the idea of putting the burden on the uploader and making it a required step in the upload process. While some of the images could be saved, there are international copyright laws. The fact that they can be used under fair use doesn't mean they aren't copy-vios. And with that said, yes, I'm going to continue to defend Betacommand and his bot because he provides an invaluable service doing work that would be impossible to keep up with otherwise. This ridiculous proposal is blatantly biased... I really don't even care to put into words what I really think of it, as I get enough fallout on my talk page for various things. If people are sooo concerned about the historic images, 1. Quit bitching and get fixing, 2. Reupload them after they are deleted, and do so under policy. Problem solved. I'm a genius. LaraLove 18:09, 17 February 2008 (UTC)
You obviously didn't take the time to look at the work I do in this area. User talk:Carcharoth/Image clean-up galleries is one example of a list of images I will be undeleting and fixing. What I don't do is defend something when there are problems with how it is done. I do support in principle the valuable service BetacommandBot provides, but I see other bots and bot operators providing similar services in a less abrasive and more co-operative manner. Carcharoth (talk) 18:15, 17 February 2008 (UTC)

You could also comment on Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria compliance if you have the time. Unless you consider that to be "bitching"? Carcharoth (talk) 18:20, 17 February 2008 (UTC)

Re-reading the above, I'm going to apologise for having been a bit snippy. In case you are interested, have a look at Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria compliance#Weekly uploads and deletions and bot taggings. Discussion should be taking place at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content criteria compliance. Carcharoth (talk) 02:08, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

Redirect

It might not have been your intention, but your recent speedy deletion of the redirect Esp@cenet® under CSD#r3 did not actually satisfy this criterion. CSD#r3 reads "Recently created redirects from implausible typos or misnomers..." The redirect was created on November 30, 2005, i.e. not recently. Could I kindly ask you to restore the redirect? For your information, I have provided a further reason for keeping this redirect on its talk page (which was also recently deleted). Thank you. --Edcolins (talk) 21:19, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

Recent or not, no one is going to search for a title with a symbol in it. Regardless of how long it's been overlooked, it doesn't make it necessary. Additionally, if you have further examples of WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS, please list it so we can review the appropriateness of those as well. LaraLove 21:41, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
Let me explain:
  • It might seem that "no one is going to search for a title with a symbol in it" (the symbol "®" I mean, esp@cenet with a "@" in it is the official title - I have just moved back the article to the right title, where it was for the last 3 years), but it is just wrong: some users do create articles with a "®" at the end (when the title of the article is a registered trademark), and therefore some users do search for such titles first. Such a redirect is therefore useful in some cases to guide these users to the already existing article. This avoids duplicate articles with different titles (before somebody takes the time to merge them). Redirects are cheap!
  • It is not an implausible typo, see for instance: Virginia A. Baldwin, Patent and Trademark Information: Uses and Perspectives, Haworth Press 2004, page 57 ISBN 0789004402 (google book and amazon will allow you to get the page). And, actually, strictly speaking, it is not a typo.
Cheers. --Edcolins (talk) 23:06, 22 February 2008 (UTC)
Sorry. I missed this reply before. I don't see the comparison with the book. That's not an article. And I really don't think people search using symbols... particularly those not easily achieved on the keyboard. LaraLove 04:12, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your response. I have asked for a deletion review of Esp@cenet®. Since you speedy-deleted this article, you might want to participate in the deletion review. Cheers. Edcolins (talk) 21:15, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

Yes, I am aware it has been deleted. And it was removed from my page by someone else. However, as a rogue admin, it seemed appropriate to keep the rouge admin category.... plus, because the reasonirg behind its deletion are so fucktarded, I can't possibly endorse it by removing the category from my page. I think it totally rocks now - it's in red and everything! ~ Riana 19:08, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
No doubt, it's even better for the following reasons:
  1. Rouge is a color, more specifically, a shade in the red family.
  2. Because it's red, it stands out; it says "look at me!!"
  3. It makes us even more rogue for being in it, which is uber l33t.
  4. Do we really need another reason?
Ridiculously awesome. LaraLove 19:18, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

Explanation wrt. Dana & mentoring

Noticed your comment to Dana here and thought I'd explain why you might not have been hearing much. I noticed another editor (can't remember who, I'll see if I can dig it up) a bit ago comment that he was under the impression that you partial wikibreak extended to taking a break from mentorship responsibilities. I was under the same impression, and likely so are others, which would explain the drop in "hate mail." --Infophile (Talk) (Contribs) 01:28, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

Hmm. Interesting. I pointed this out somewhere, I thought on his talk page, perhaps some other heated thread, that my semi-wikibreak did not cover my mentorship of him, nor other ongoing responsibilities, rather just any random incoming requests. If there are issues, I want to know about them, otherwise, I would have removed the banner from his talk page. LaraLove 04:05, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
Noting a few people who've made this assumption: ScienceApologist, Brunton (even after Dana tried to correct him), and Baegis (who does appear to have had some problems with Dana).
Personally, I also raised an issue about him on that page. I might have raised this issue with you if I'd known you were still active in mentoring him. Now, I haven't been personally involved in this issue, I just noticed that it was happening and it appears that his behavior frustrated another editor to the breaking point when he refused to answer questions about a study he wanted to cite for the article. Whig commented that he made it clear he wasn't going to answer it in Dana's defense, but in my view, that's exactly the problem. --Infophile (Talk) (Contribs) 17:04, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

Dear Ms Love

Apologies if this is not the correct procedure for querying deletions, but as the convener of the Westminster Committee on Iran, I would ask that you replace the page that was deleted on this important international organisation. We at the committee cannot agree that the page was “blatant advertising”. Whilst it clearly gave information on the group (including guiding principles, links to references in national and international media, and quotes about the organisation from the director of the IPU (a UN subsidiary) it was not a advertisement for the group. As I am no longer able to sign in having had the details deleted, I assume that this is the way I challenge a deletion. I will give it a little while before contacting the adjudicators.

Kind regards —Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.171.163.194 (talk) 15:35, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

I'll look back through my deletions to see what it is specifically that you're speak of. I've not done article deletions lately, so I'm assuming this was a userpage I deleted and subsequently blocked the name. If this is the case, it will not be undone. Userpages are to detail user's information and their contributions to the encyclopedia, not advertise their company or organization. Also, names of companies and organizations are considered promotional when used in such a manner.
I'll look into this now, just in case I'm incorrectly recalling my recent edits. If the above doesn't apply, just give me a few minutes and I'll correct or clarify. LaraLove 17:53, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
Yes. User:The Westminster Committee on Iran. Please note that Wikipedia does not allow "Advertising or promotion of a business or non-Wikipedia-related organization (such as purely commercial sites or referral links)" on user pages, per WP:UP#NOT. We're here to build an encyclopedia, not advertise our organizations. See also Wikipedia:USERNAME#Company.2Fgroup names. I'm sorry for the inconvenience. LaraLove 17:58, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

Dear Ms Love

Thank you for your quick response. Whilst we understand that Wikipedia is not a place for promoting businesses or advertising organisations, we fail to see how the page fell into either of these categories. The Westminster Committee is the only international organisation of its kind. The page described the background, guiding principles, activities and coverage of the group which has been in existence for over 2 years and has received press coverage in the Economist, LA Times, Times, Guardian, Independent and has been recognised by the UN’s InterParliamentary Union. Members of the group have been interviewed on BBC, PressTV, Irna and Saha television. I would therefore suggest that the group is deserving of a mention within the terms of the encylopedic function the Wikipedia proports to provide. I would request that you look again at the page. If there are elements that you feel are “blatant promotion or advertising” please delete them, but perhaps you could leave the main body of the text there. I recognise that you are an experienced and qualified editor but I would request that this matter also be referred to the ajudicators for further assessment.

An idea

User talk:Carcharoth#An idea, User talk:LaraLove#An idea

After this edit, I have been giving serious thought to the idea of opening an Arbitration case on the whole Betacommand issue. As a largely uninvolved user, it seems that the big problem with this debate is that no one seems prepared to compromise - Betacommand's defensiveness is completely understandable given the amount of abuse he gets, but it is also indisputable that if he satisfied some of the reasonable requests that have been put to him - be more communicative, answer questions, give more details of the bot code, etc - he'd get less abuse than he does currently. Similarly, the number of utterly unacceptable comments lodged in the reams of debate we have going on this issue beggars belief. If the ArbCom ordered Betacommand to give them copies of the bot code, he would give them copies of the bot code. If they ordered him to be more communicative, he would be more communicative. And if the ArbCom ordered that anyone making unacceptable NPA or Civility violations about or around Betacommand be dealt with harshly, then people would, eventually, stop giving him the thoroughly undeserved abuse that he's been taking all this time.

I'm posting this to you personally rather than take it anywhere public for obvious reasons. You're both active on Betacommand- and non-free-image-related discussions, and also on and around the arbitration committee. You also seem to have the most level heads of all those on WP:AN/B! So what do you think? Is this a good idea? Will the ArbCom hear it? Will we be able to get a sensible case heard without it collapsing like all the other Betacommand-related discussion? If it is a good idea, who should present it, and what should they say?

I would be delighted to hear your thoughts on this matter. Happymelon 16:05, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

I don't know that Betacommand would release his code to ArbCom. I'm not saying he wouldn't, I just don't know. He may chose to instead shut down the bot or, worse yet, leave the project. Putting that aside, as he's the only one that really knows the answer, we're working on correcting some of the communication issues. First, a FAQ has been created. There are other editors (Beta supporters) watching his talk page and responding to requests so that he doesn't have to, and it's not as if he's totally unwilling to respond to questions and requests. It's all a matter of how he's approached and what's being asked. His answers are also sometimes read in a tone different than they were written in, so it's not as bad as it seems. Though, after everything he's taken in the past few days, his responses are a bit more on the extreme side of fed up. However, in speaking with him, he's assured me that he's not going rogue or leaving, so as long as these little outbursts in red text are helping him deal, I'm not faulting him for them.
Specifically speaking on my feelings of an ArbCom case, I think that if everyone would just back off the man and give him some room to breathe, everything would be fine. All the images are tagged, the deadline is approaching, we have work to do. Countless hours have been wasted on that subpage, the "proposal" and pages, including the MfD, that stemmed from it. An ArbCom case, which I rarely am inclined to participate in for this reason, will take waaaaay too long to build and get through. Do you want to be taken to ArbCom? No. No one does. Betacommand deserves a break now. That "proposal" aka attack page was a slap in the face. An ArbCom case right now would be a kick in the balls. He does good work here, provides an invaluable service and he takes a lot of shit for it. Could he deal with it more politely? Sure. Could I slow my roll and defend him more calmly? No doubt. But people can only take so much or repeat themselves so many times before the tension gets high and the fuses short.
Wait until the deadline has passed. When legacy images aren't being tagged and it's just a matter of new uploads, and after some time has passed with the FAQ being used, and those of us responding to requests and questions on Beta's talk have taken some of the pressure off of him. If there are still problems at that point, then take it to ArbCom. LaraLove 16:38, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

Towards the end of [1], you said "You pound the same problems into the page over and over while never offering a way to improve said problems". I ran into this as well. I'm pretty much done with him. He thinks he's somehow above me and I've learned it's best not to even acknowledge people like him. They're not going to get anywhere on their own. Some level-headed editors have joined in and are making some progress. We've already started making changes. They can keep complaining about the same things while not bothering to offer suggestions, but I've got work to do. And I'm not swaying in my support of Betacommand and his bot, just as they're not swaying from their position of opposition, so let me know if anything else blows up that may be of interest to me. It was nice meeting you, even in such ridiculous circumstances. LaraLove 13:44, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

Because I didn't know anything about what it takes to become an admin, I decided that I'd put off the RFA and start at the beginning with admin coaching. A bit of personal trivia, my only sibling, Larissa, was named after Lara from Dr. Zhivago. Interesting coincidence. Anyways, I await your reply. ~a (usertalkcontribs) 17:28, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

Wonderful. I've got an adoptee classroom, but you're my first admin coachee, so let's start with what you are most interested in and work from there. From looking over your edit count with WBK, it appears our interests are in totally different areas... but that could be a good thing. LaraLove 17:39, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
In the past few months most of my time has been spent thoughtfully replying to editor assistance requests (WP:EAR). Other time has been spent analyzing changes made to my watchlist or recent changes (the latter of which inevitably directs me to vandalism intervention). Every once and a while, I go on a search for citations or stumble upon an article in need of deletion (or needs saving from deletion). In other words, my interests are pretty disjointed and disorganized. Do you have any suggestions? ~a (usertalkcontribs) 18:21, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
I'm a wanderer. I float from one place to another depending on my mood. Avoiding certain areas, like XfD pretty successfully. As of late, article writing has been a big deal in RFA. Do you contribute to the improvement of articles? LaraLove 18:30, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
I have noticed that too. Most of my article improvement has been in small chunks. A citation here, copyediting there, minor rewording of sentences. However, one of my weaknesses is creating and sourcing large amounts of content from scratch. I'm interested in getting into featured articles or requested articles but I'm not sure where to start. ~a (usertalkcontribs) 18:37, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
What topics are you interested in? And do you have IRC? LaraLove 19:36, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
On Wikipedia, I roam from article to article (nothing in specific). I'm guessing, however, you're asking for topics more generally. I.e. topics that I have concentrated off Wikipedia that I might be able to concentrate on Wikipedia. They would be: computer software, sports (mountain biking, rowing, skiing, ultimate, skating, and blading), music (rock), movies, tv (comedy central/adult swim). Yes, I have IRC. ~a (usertalkcontribs) 20:35, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
Consider joining a Wikiproject and getting involved in their article improvements and collaborations of the week/month. That will help build up your wiki-portfolio for a successful RFA. If you hit IRC, you can find me in #wikipedia-en. It's a cesspool, but it's better than nothing. ;) LaraLove 20:59, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
Will do. I'll report back when I've found one that interests me. ~a (usertalkcontribs) 21:18, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

(ui) I have noticed that very few (almost none) of the Wikiprojects have collaborations of the week/month. In fact, some of them don't even have any organized article improvement plans/tasks. ~a (usertalkcontribs) 18:28, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

Interesting. Perhaps it's just been my experience with WikiProjects, which are admittedly in a narrow scope. Well, let me know if you need help or have questions. If you're interested in a particular style of music, they usually focus on one article, some even have projects for bands. LaraLove 18:31, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

Herro, Templatey??

Heyo Lara, Nick told me that you could help me with the construction of a new user page, templates and all! I just want it to look a bit tidier and once you just give me a better look for it, I can expand on the coding you give me. If you could hook me up I would appreciate it! Cheers! Wait, so you're a New England Traitors fan?

How'd that go for ya?

Did the Colt's make it to Super Bowl? Did they win ever game leading up to it? No, shit... that was my team. So to answer your question, it could have worked out better, but it was still a damn exciting season. BTW, it's almost March, so you might want to flip the next page on the calendar. You seem to be a little behind. ;) LaraLove 17:41, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
