Plant articles

Hi IceCreamAntisocial; I added pictures to some of your plant species stubs recently. It is a pleasure to find so many articles already written. Thank you, Walter Siegmund (talk) 22:08, 17 December 2009 (UTC)

And now, for FV's traditional last-minute nonsectarian holiday greeting!

Here’s wishing you a happy end to the holiday season and a wonderful 2010.

FNA as ref

Just wondering, have you considered using FNA as a reference for new articles? I've found writeups like [1] for Petradoria super-useful; they are up-to-date, they cover outside-California where Jepson gets sketchy, and seem to be pretty authoritative. Downside is incompleteness, but all the Asteraceae are included now, which is a godsend when deciphering the 100+ DYCs found within a hour's drive of my house. :-) Now back to photo processing, I think I finally have definite ID for Eriogonum palmerianum... Stan (talk) 21:01, 3 January 2010 (UTC)

True, and for some reason it doesn't show up in Google's top hits, being crowded out by useless no-content gardening sites, guess those botanists haven't studied up on SEO... :-/ I usually have to add "fna" to the search to find it. Stan (talk) 21:14, 3 January 2010 (UTC)

Polemonium californicum

Polemonium californicum seems to be lacking an article, but it looks like you may write one soon.[2] If so, there are a number of photographs from which to choose at Commons:Polemonium californicum. Best wishes in 2010. Walter Siegmund (talk) 02:05, 9 January 2010 (UTC)

  • Nice! Feel free to place whichever pic you like into the article. Also I sometimes forget to link to the Commons page for each species, so fix as necessary! Thanks -IceCreamAntisocial (talk) 15:46, 10 January 2010 (UTC)
    • Splendid! I think you covered every important point. I enjoy seeing which picture you choose and it helps me take better pictures. The Commons tag can be helpful to other editors and readers. Also, for popular, much-photographed subjects, it is an alternative to an article crowded with pictures and galleries. Thank you for your fine work. Walter Siegmund (talk) 16:37, 10 January 2010 (UTC)

After looking through dozens of new articles about non-notable topics, and generally feeling disappointed when thinking about all of the time that will be wasted in deleting them, I felt positively delighted to see and read one of your new articles in the Special:NewPages list about the species of plantain Plantago elongata. Thank you so very much for your tireless work and for helping to keep new page patrollers sane.

  • You're welcome! I always like a new plant stub myself. -IceCreamAntisocial (talk) 00:48, 16 February 2010 (UTC)
    • Hah! Me too.
    • I don't know why this is, but some days are really good as far as the new content, other days are not so good, and there are some days, which I call "semi-automatic content days", when many of the new articles share a common theme. Semi-automatic content days generally occur around special events such as the Olympics, when several articles were created for basically every Olympic athlete and team, or an extremely motivated Wikipedian suddenly decides to add a whole bunch of articles around a common theme (e.g. the recent "visa requirements" articles: Visa requirements for Austrian, Bahamian, Ivorian, Cuban, Ghanian, Georgian, Finnish, Congolese, Dutch, Bruneian, Costa Rican, Chilean, Cameroonian, ... citizens). « D. Trebbien (talk) 01:33, 16 February 2010 (UTC)

Moehringia macrophylla

Thank you for starting Moehringia macrophylla. I changed the taxobox image to one that may better illustrate the species. Best wishes, Walter Siegmund (talk) 20:47, 2 June 2010 (UTC)

You are now a Reviewer

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 04:59, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

Ribes amarum

Hello IceCreamAntisocial,

Regarding your edit here, could you give me your rationale for not having a common name in the taxobox, when it already has the botanical name mentioned twice (albeit in two different forms)?

Just so you know, I'm not for common named-titles at all, for any biota, just for having at least one in the taxobox. To my thinking, taxoboxen serve as a sort of summary of names (among other things) for someone looking for it quickly. And a common name is one of those names. For a reader looking for more information, deeper explanations are to be found in the text.

Finally, I don't see any harm in having it there.

Ribes amarum
(bitter gooseberry)
Scientific classification
Kingdom:
Division:
Class:
Order:
Family:
Genus:
Species:
R. amarum
Binomial name
Ribes amarum
Synonyms

OR... How about having it look like this one, here, instead. I've noticed a few plant pages are presented this way already.

I'll copy this text to Talk:Ribes amarum, sans personalization, and you can respond there.

Thanks for your time, Hamamelis (talk) 05:17, 27 August 2010 (UTC)

Relieved to hear it. Honestly, it wouldn't have meant that much for me either, but I wasn't sure if you were going to jump down my throat for it. It happens occasionally, mostly it seems over the littlest of issues. So, thanks for not caring, in this case. ;) Hamamelis (talk) 14:02, 27 August 2010 (UTC)

request for notification

hi -- I see that we're both making short pages on plants. Could you please ping me when you happen to create pages in English for these (they only exist in Navajo so far and the bots will completely miss out on the interwikis)

thanks. Choyoołʼįįhí:Seb az86556 > haneʼ 22:19, 6 October 2010 (UTC)

Removal of content

In this edit you removed two establishment categories from the article without your edit summary mentioning the reason for this. I have reinstated these categories. Could you explain why you removed them? Was it possibly done inadvertently? __meco (talk) 19:04, 23 October 2010 (UTC)

  • There were two articles about the school. I moved one of them to its current location (which has a better title) by simply replacing the one already there. In the process, your categories were deleted. I apologize profusely. It was nothing personal. Cheers, IceCreamAntisocial (talk) 19:34, 23 October 2010 (UTC)

Removal of content

You deleted revisions to the Kiddie Kandids page and I was wondering if you could explain your reasoning. I work for the company that now owns the studio and was asked to update the page. Thank you. AMFitz

  • If you work for the company, please do not edit its page. Tell your boss it is not appropriate. It is a conflict of interest. Please read the Wikipedia conflict of interest guidelines. If you continue to edit the page I will remove your content and the Wikipedia admins will probably block your account. Any content added to the article should be neutral and not advertising. The content you wrote was pure advertising and promotion of a company, which is not allowed on Wikipedia. Please also read Wikipedia's guideline on neutrality, which is a fundamental principle of the site and non-negotiable. I recommend becoming familiar with Wikipedia and its guidelines before submitting content. Thanks. IceCreamAntisocial (talk) 20:53, 4 November 2010 (UTC)

Thanks

The Bio-star
IceCreamAntisocial, you deserve this biostar for your consistent great work on plant articles and specifically for creating Wolffia arrhiza about the smallest vascular plant in the world! Keep up the good work! SmartSE (talk) 16:20, 6 December 2010 (UTC)

Wow that's nice! Thank you! IceCreamAntisocial (talk) 16:27, 6 December 2010 (UTC)

Turning Ten

On Saturday January 15, 2011, Wikipedia will turn 10 years and people all over the globe will be celebrating Wikipedia on that day. No event is currently planned for Orange County Wikipedians, so I am leaving a message with some of the currently involved editors listed in "Wikipedians in Orange County, California" & "Wikipedians in Southern California" to see if we might want to meet on that day, lunch, dinner, group photo or other ideas welcomed? I will start a "Turning Ten" discussion thread on my Talk page to see if any interest can be planned for and determined. I am located in Old Towne Orange off the circle. Tinkermen (talk) 19:33, 6 January 2011 (UTC)

New York Times article

Bravo![4] But not a surprise, for some reason. I thought Kat Walsh's comments on her personal wiki were of interest also.[5] Best wishes, Walter Siegmund (talk) 03:48, 1 February 2011 (UTC)

DYKs...

Hi! Thank you for nominating all those articles for DYK! If you need me to do any work on them let me know. I'm currently going through all the plants on the US endangered species list and these tend to have many juicy resources and research papers to cite, indicating good DYK potential. And I'm only on the C's! Thanks again and great work! Cheers, IceCreamAntisocial (talk) 18:35, 7 February 2011 (UTC)

You are very welcome, IceCreamAntisocial. You have been doing good work and your good work deserves the spotlight on Wikipedia's MainPage. Please keep your nice articles on rare flowers coming. I am not around every day, so I am bound to miss out at least some of your goodies. So please be encouraged to nominate your own articles for DYK. Happy editing. Cheers! --PFHLai (talk) 05:06, 10 February 2011 (UTC)

You tagged this article as a copypaste but left no url. In the edit log you said it was copied from wormbook but I can't find the relevant section of that site - could you point me at it. As most of that site has a compatiable licence with wikipedia so it seems likely that this isn't a copyright violation as long as we can confirm that the bit this was taken from has that licence. If it does then all we need to do it attribute the source properly. Dpmuk (talk) 13:28, 15 February 2011 (UTC)

Explanation

Please understand this explanation. It is true that I and my colleagues we enter a great number of facts in the text for the simple reason that in the documentation that we have found it necessary to supplement the text. Surely you see that these are just minor details, such as, dates, pages, spelling errors and others. Also please understand that English is not my native language and I need help with cleanup article. Anyway, I had no intention of even only in an 'International Art' to enter the missing data (dates and pages) and to completely stop working on an article waiting to be well acquainted with English ways and prepare for the cleanup of the article Wikipedia standards.--Despotović (talk) 20:07, 17 February 2011 (UTC)

Substing templates

You missed a vandalism template here. I fixed it. mechamind90 23:00, 22 February 2011 (UTC)

Per the note on your userpage

You've inspired me. Thanks for trying to help (with) Roberta Lee. You were right from the beginning. Thanks for all the California plant articles too, they popped up quite a bit on our new article list. Cheers! Valfontis (talk) 05:39, 8 March 2011 (UTC)

Thank you!

<blush> Thanks for the kind words! Conversely, your excellent article-writing motivates me to get out and wade through the brush looking for things! Been a little slow about clearing picture backlog lately, got another project going on, but I'm expecting to visit Florida in several months, and it looks like several of the rares you're been describing have populations close enough to go and do a little hunting... Eriogonum photo

Hello, I was inspired by your recent addition of the Eriogonum longifolum flowers to Eriogonum longifolium‎ and Eriogonum longifolium var. gnaphalifolium. So this prompted me to upload a photo I made last summer of the E. Longifolium var. harperi stalk. These are indeed impressive plants, over 6 feet tall! Regards. For creating the 4,000th article under the aegis of WikiProject ArthropodsBranchinecta longiantenna – I award you this barnstar. --Stemonitis (talk) 20:28, 5 September 2011 (UTC)

Hello IceCream AntiSocial! Thanks so much for the very nice new gastropod article about the very cool and rare Banbury Springs lanx. It would be nice to go see this little freshwater limpet if I was ever in Idaho. I don't suppose you would like to join WikiProject Gastropods...??? I think I may possibly have asked you that before, so I don't want to repeat myself, you are probably too busy with other areas. I wanted to say I just got back from almost a month in SoCal myself, I lived there in 1970/71. Like you I am female, a cat owner, a biologist and a senior editor, I favor semicolons, etc! We have lot in common. Best wishes, Invertzoo (talk) 21:19, 20 September 2011 (UTC)

  • Hello! Thanks for the invite. Right now I'm going through the endangered species list and putting up articles for species that don't have them. There are tons of mussels and things that need attention! I do like gastropods so I'll join up! Thanks again -IceCreamAntisocial (talk) 22:41, 20 September 2011 (UTC)

Aaaah... so you do like gastropods! I will give you the invitation!

A very big WELCOME to WikiProject Gastropods for you, IceCreamAntisocial, a new member! We are delighted that you decided to join the Project! Thank you for your interest and I hope you will enjoy further improving our coverage of slugs and snails. I know the marine gastropods of SoCal fairly well (although not the native non-marine ones) so who knows, maybe I can work on the same article as you some time! Again, welcome! Survey

Hi IceCreamAntisocial!

I have put together a survey for female editors of Wikipedia (and related projects) in order to explore, in greater detail, women's experiences and roles within the Wikimedia movement. It'd be wonderful if you could participate!

It's an independent survey, done by me, as a fellow volunteer Wikimedian. It is not being done on behalf of the Wikimedia Foundation. I hope you'll participate!

Just click this link to participate in this survey, via Google!

Any questions or concerns, feel free to email me or stop by my user talk page. Also, feel free to share this any other female Wikimedians you may know. It is in English, but any language Wikimedia participants are encouraged to participate. I appreciate your contributions - to the survey and to Wikipedia! Thank you! Hello IceCreamAntisocial, I hope you're well. My name is Aaron and I'm one of the Storytellers working on the 2011 fundraiser here at the Wikimedia Foundation. For this year's campaign we're seeking out and interviewing active Wikipedians like yourself, in order to produce a broader and more representative range of "personal appeals" to run come November. If you'd like to participate in this project, please email me at amuszalski@wikimedia.org. Interviews are typically conducted by phone or Skype and take between 30-90 minutes. (Note: This invitation is open to any interested Wikipedian — If you're reading this, and would like to be interviewed as well, please contact me.) Thanks!
