Question from Tahkilo (18:49, 2 August 2024)

[edit]

Hello my mentor, is there any highlights for me to translate a page on Wikipedia? --Tahkilo (talk) 18:49, 2 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Tahkilo Every language Wikipedia has different standards for inclusion, so you should use articles for creation at first. I dream of horses (Hoofprints) (Neigh at me) 18:51, 2 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Tasmeem Raima on Draft:Kim In-seong (11:10, 11 August 2024)

[edit]

Hello. How can I insert a picture & what is important to include in the biography section? Thank in advance. --Tasmeem Raima (talk) 11:10, 11 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Tasmeem Raima Pictures aren't important, and there's some complexities as to copyright. You can insert them after the draft is approved.
As to what's important to include, if it's significantly mentioned in a reliable third-party source (that is, a source that's been reviewed by an editor and wasn't influenced by In-seong or his band), it's important to include it. A message from Davidindia

[edit]

Thanks for the review of K. S. Anand. I noticed that you removed the sections. Is there anything wrong with it. I thought it is the proper format for creating new pages for politicians. thanks and regards! Davidindia (talk) 17:03, 11 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Davidindia For most articles, yeah. For stubs, section headers can be a bit overwhelming. I dream of horses (Hoofprints) (Neigh at me) 18:09, 11 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Got it, thanks! Davidindia (talk) 05:49, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Dave South Perth (03:53, 12 August 2024)

[edit]

Hello there, I have started to create an article for the Sydney artist and musician Carol Ruff. This is my first attempt, two things I'm not sure about, where do i enter the information that goes in the RH sidebar, date of birth etc... And where do I enter References and External Links ? TIA, Dave --Dave South Perth (talk) 03:53, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Dave South Perth First of all, if you have a conflict of interest (that is, if you know Ruff personally or professionally), you'll need to disclose that on your userpage. Also, jumping right in with writing an article is difficult enough that it's rarely successful, so I put a welcome template so you can at least have a tutorial, and possibly some assisted edits that should be easier to do.
Now, to answer your questions:
  1. You're thinking of an infobox, which is unimportant until you get the draft approved and published.
  2. You insert external links at the end of a page. Just put the official site there for now. Typically, references are inline citations that are inserted through the article. The main obstacle about writing an article, particularly about a person, company, etc. is that almost no one is noted enough to qualify for a Wikipedia article. This requires significant mentions in multiple reliable, secondary, third-party sources. Even when someone qualifies for an article, it's not always a good thing, because [...n]o one is perfect, so your faults may get reported, and overreported, and reported enough to end up on Wikipedia. Even if you have lived a life free of scandal, and your Wikipedia article is spotless, at some time in the future your first publicized mistake may well end up getting into that article.

Question from Pinkfloyedaudi (19:38, 11 August 2024)

[edit]

Good day..I'm trying to open a page about a South African actor. Now so far I'm not getting much help. --Pinkfloyedaudi (talk) (talk) 19:38, 11 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Pinkfloyedaudi The objections to your edits seem to be surrounding sourcing and copyright. Unless the actor has been significantly mentioned in multiple reliable, secondary, third-party sources, then unfortunately, they haven't been noted enough by others to have an article on Wikipedia. For people who are alive, we need to have photographs that have had their copyright partially or fully waived; honestly, this is true of almost all photographs on the English Wikipedia. Question from Exordi (05:46, 12 August 2024)

[edit]

Hi! I decided to help out a bit and start editing some articles, and just did the basic suggested edits for grammar and linking pages and such. However, I got my first suggested reference lookup, and I had a quick question before I start editing, since I couldn't find a clear answer in the MoS. I have the article "Paoni 1" in the Coptic Calendar (sorry, not sure how to link in this). I'm looking to add citations for the saint's days and commemorations. I have a source that says one of the commemorations as taking place on this day, but it is directly from a Dioceses of the Church and I am unsure as to if it would be considered a primary or secondary source, and thus if it would be suitable to cite. Could you give me some guidance? Thanks. --Exordi (talk) 05:46, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Exordi Good question! For this, as long as the subject of the article is noted enough to have one, then a primary source is fine for this specific situation; who else would know better about when a commemoration takes place? Besides, I'm picking up on the fact that this might be in a gray area, anyways. I dream of horses (Hoofprints) (Neigh at me) 18:05, 13 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks; the grey area I think you're referring to is that this specific source definitely isn't the original source of this calendar, since they're just a dioceses of a two-millenia old church, and the same calendar is present on many other websites of the church. Exordi (talk) 20:15, 13 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Exordi Right. I dream of horses (Hoofprints) (Neigh at me) 05:24, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Walking on Locusts

[edit]

Why has the John Cale album Walking on Locusts been redirected to his own article? It was a long-standing article, potentially notable due to being his only 90s album, and also due to having Talking Heads’s David Byrne on it — as well as Moe Tucker from the Velvet Underground. It just feels like a senseless, short-sighted redirect decision.

Thanks, Joe Vitale 5 (talk) 05:43, 17 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

To add, this is now his only studio album without a Wikipedia article… what was your reasoning? You’ve fluffed up his discography, Joe Vitale 5 (talk) 05:48, 17 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Joe Vitale 5 Notability isn’t inherited; a musical artist can have an album with plenty of other notable musicians on it, and the album can still not be notable. It goes down to sourcing, which Wikipedia absolutely needs but albums sometimes are lacking in. It’s possible that his other albums aren’t notable, either, and also need to be redirected (or just outright deleted). I dream of horses (Hoofprints) (Neigh at me) 07:19, 17 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Phalaenopsisis (21:02, 17 August 2024)

[edit]

Hi, how are you ? I wish to participate in a great project like Women in Red. Do you have some advices to help me get started on Wikipedia ? --Phalaenopsisis (talk) 21:02, 17 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Phalaenopsisis You probably should do easier edits for a while before creating articles for Women in Red. If your native language isn't English, there's probably another Wikipedia you can help more fluently. I dream of horses (Hoofprints) (Neigh at me) 03:59, 18 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@I dream of horses Many thanks for the advice! I'm going to start slowly, in order to understand the functioning, the rules, the typography. I have dual French-American nationality and I speak both languages fluently so I really want to contribute to both wikis and both cultures 😊❤️.

[edit]

Also Its my own experience making my own biography in my wikipedia. --Jatong85 (talk) 08:14, 18 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Jatong85 There is a way to get an article about yourself on Wikipedia, and you actually started out doing exactly that (going through articles for creation). However, at this point, you've had the articles you've created about yourself speedily deleted a few times, so my advice for this specific situation is to stop writing about yourself. @AGuyWhoOwnsTooManyGames Almost all of the time, talking to them helps. Knowing context would help with knowing if this is a genuine misunderstanding or something else entirely. I dream of horses (Hoofprints) (Neigh at me) 22:13, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@AGuyWhoOwnsTooManyGames That probably happen more than you realize. Guidance regarding a discussion

[edit]

Hello, I hope this message finds you well. I'm writing to seek your guidance regarding an ongoing discussion here.

I had hoped the discussion would be constructive, with all parties willing to compromise for the betterment of the article. Unfortunately, it has not gone as well as expected. Several editors (and some administrators) have applied what I consider to be an unneutral view regarding Scottish baronial titles. Their positions seem to be based more on personal opinions rather than scholarly references, and so far they have been unable to raise a good argument against my and fellow editors' contentions which are backed by proper sources. It's worth noting that some of these editors/admins have a history of reverting related edits without proper explanations. I believe their disruptive behaviour is ultimately detrimental to Wikipedia, as good-faith edits from fellow editors can be easily overridden by those abusing their power.

Given this situation, I would greatly appreciate your advice and guidance. Your input would be invaluable in helping me navigate this challenge constructively. Daniel Plumber (talk) 15:09, 26 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Daniel Plumber Actually, that's a civil discussion compared to other conflicts I've seen. Of course, WP:REVERT does note that a proper explanation is best practice, but even those acting in the best of faith can forget to do that. The assumption of good faith is required by policy, barring evidence to the contrary; typically, politely asking why someone reverted your edit should suffice.
You'll note that I left a note at the discussion about your message here. This is to protect you, since there seems to be some accusation of recruitment.
Apologies that I lack the knowledge to be of more help. I dream of horses (Hoofprints) (Neigh at me) 00:46, 27 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, and thanks for the advice.
I forgot to mention that, although I am not trying to recruit you, I was asking for your advice in your capacity as my mentor. This is to provide more context to other relevant editors when they visit your talk page ;-). Again, I really appreciate your guidance and perspective. Question from HazelTheHobbit (00:54, 29 August 2024)

[edit]

Sounds good! I was wondering, what are the overall guide lines for creating an article? --HazelTheHobbit (talk) 00:54, 29 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@HazelTheHobbit You start by making sure whatever it is you're writing about actually qualifies for an article. Then, at least for your first article, you write a draft through articles for creation.
Writing an article might be easier if you go through the tutorials, etc. I linked on your talk page. I dream of horses (Hoofprints) (Neigh at me) 02:36, 29 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Viceskeeni2 (12:01, 27 August 2024)

[edit]

Hello Mr. I dream of horses, I have a question: Because editors under 500 edits are forbidden from editing on topics of Azerbaijan and Armenia, can I stil ledit on topics of only Azerbaijan. Like for example a mosque in Azerbaijan, that has nothing to do with Armenia. Or just make other regular articles on other topics or do I need 500 dits until I can make own articles --Viceskeeni2 (talk) 12:01, 27 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Viceskeeni2 Looking at the spirit of the restrictions, I think you're fine as long as you don't start talking about the ethnic conflict that bought about those restrictions while editing the article on the hypothetical mosque. This is particularly true if you have a history of editing in other subject areas, and didn't just dive into editing about Azerbaijan. I will say, though, erring on the side of caution and doing 500 edits elsewhere isn't going to hurt anyone, particularly if you're going to write about anything controversial (politics, religion, etc.).
If you mess up, though, don't worry; unless there's something you aren't telling me, which I doubt, you'll just get a warning the first time. I dream of horses (Hoofprints) (Neigh at me) 12:53, 27 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Viceskeeni2 (talk) 12:54, 27 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Viceskeeni2 I want to clarify that:
  1. A genocide would definately qualify as a "conflict." If this conflict was (allegedly) perpetuated by the Armenians on the Azerbaijan people, then yes, that absolutely qualifies as being part of the Azerbaijan-Armenia qualify. That goes beyond "just an article about a mosque."
  2. This is what I meant by you'll just get a warning the first time.
