DYK for Prodeinotherium
On 9 August 2015, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Prodeinotherium, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Prodeinotherium is an early genus of proboscidean that had two tusks projecting downwards from its chin? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Prodeinotherium. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, live views, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page. |

Ocepeia review
Hey IJReid, I'm thinking of pushing Ocepeia to GA soon, as I think it likely meets criteria, but was thinking it might benefit from a peer review beforehand. My main concern, as it was in the beginning, is the "Distinguishing anatomical features" goes into too much descriptive detail, but some fresh eyes from general reviewers or WP Paleo might identify how best to improve it. Whaddaya think? --Animalparty! (talk) 23:15, 9 August 2015 (UTC)
- As long as all terms are linked it should be good. One problem is how closely the wording aligns with the non-free sources, but I will check soon to see. IJReid discuss 23:30, 9 August 2015 (UTC)
- Checks out [1]. Oh and Animalparty, maybe you could mention this on the Paleo Projects talk page. IJReid discuss 23:31, 9 August 2015 (UTC)
Cedar Mountain
Hello IJReid ! I've seen on your 'To do list' that you're going to draw animals of Cedar Mountain Ecosystem. I was wondering if you had intended to draw an overall view of ecosystem because it is a job that would interest me^^Foolp (talk) 15:20, 19 August 2015 (UTC)
- Foolp, well, the basis of my drawing is already finished, and it isn't very detailed in the landscape and plants. Also, my drawing is of the Ruby Ranch Member, just to let you know. If you want to you can draw the CMF ecosystem for sure. IJReid discuss 15:35, 19 August 2015 (UTC)
- That's OK ! I just wait to see your work and I'll do that Foolp (talk) 15:55, 19 August 2015 (UTC)
WikiCup 2015 September newsletter
The finals for the 2015 Wikicup has now begun! Congrats to the 8 contestants who have survived to the finals, and well done and thanks to everyone who took part in rounds 3 and 4.
In round 3, we had a three-way tie for qualification among the wildcard contestants, so we had 34 competitors. The leader was by far Casliber (submissions) in Group B, who earned 1496 points. Although 913 of these points were bonus points, he submitted 15 articles in the DYK category. Second place overall was Coemgenus (submissions) at 864 points, who although submitted just 2 FAs for 400 points, earned double that amount for those articles in bonus points. Everyone who moved forward to Round 4 earned at least 100 points.
The scores required to move onto the semifinals were impressive; the lowest scorer to move onto the finals was 407, making this year's Wikicup as competitive as it's always been. Our finalists, ordered by round 4 score, are:
- Cas Liber (submissions), who is competing in his sixth consecutive Wikicup final, again finished the round in first place, with an impressive 1666 points in Pool B. Casliber writes about the natural sciences, including ornithology, botany and astronomy. A large bulk of his points this round were bonus points.
- Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points), second place both in Pool B and overall, earned the bulk of his points with FPs, mostly depicting currency.
- Cwmhiraeth (submissions), first in Pool A, came in third. His specialty is natural science articles; in Round 4, he mostly submitted articles about insects and botany. Five out of the six of the GAs he submitted were level-4 vital articles.
- Harrias (submissions), second in Pool A, took fourth overall. He tends to focus on articles about cricket and military history, specifically the 1640s First English Civil War.
- West Virginian (submissions), from Pool A, was our highest-scoring wildcard. West Virginia tends to focus on articles about the history of (what for it!) the U.S. state of West Virginia.
- Rodw (submissions), from Pool A, likes to work on articles about British geography and places. Most of his points this round were earned from two impressive accomplishments: a GT about Scheduled monuments in Somerset and a FT about English Heritage properties in Somerset.
- Rationalobserver (submissions), from Pool B, came in seventh overall. RO earned the majority of her points from GARs and PRs, many of which were earned in the final hours of the round.
- Calvin999 (submissions), also from Pool B, who was competing with RO for the final two spots in the final hours, takes the race for most GARs and PRs—48.
The intense competition between RO and Calvin999 will continue into the finals. They're both eligible for the Newcomers Trophy, given for the first time in the Wikicup; whoever makes the most points will win it.
Good luck to the finalists; the judges are sure that the competition will be fierce!

Five minutes to help make WikiProjects better
Hello!
First, on behalf of WikiProject X, thank you for trying out the WikiProject X pilot projects. I would like to get some anonymous feedback from you on your experience using the new WikiProject layout and tools. This way, we will know what we did right, and if we did something horribly wrong, we can try to fix it. This feedback won't be associated with your username, so please be completely honest. We are determined to improve the experience of Wikipedians, and your feedback helps us with that. (You are also welcome to leave non-anonymous feedback at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject X.)
Please complete the survey here. The survey has two parts: the first part asks for your username, while the second part contains the survey questions. These two parts are stored separately, so your username will not be associated with your feedback. There are only nine questions and it should not take very long to complete. Once you complete the survey I will leave a handwritten note on your talk page as a token of my appreciation.
Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you, Harej (talk) 17:49, 2 September 2015 (UTC)

- OH, ok it will be removed. IJReid discuss 22:13, 4 September 2015 (UTC)
- No worries, it has been deleted. The confusion stems from the fact that the SVPOW blog says you had released it under a CC license, which it apparently wasn't. FunkMonk (talk) 22:17, 4 September 2015 (UTC)
Apatosaurus
Will we be nominating soon? LittleJerry (talk) 19:53, 30 August 2015 (UTC)
- Not quite, the images become PD on the 27th of September, so maybe we nominate around the 20th? IJReid discuss 01:42, 31 August 2015 (UTC)
- Okay, I guess. Can't we still add the PD images later regardless of the date of the nomination? LittleJerry (talk) 02:09, 31 August 2015 (UTC)
- Yah we could nominate it whenever, but we should state during the image review at least that we will get a number more than may better illustrate subjects. IJReid discuss 03:50, 31 August 2015 (UTC)
- A problem just occurred to me about that. Nothing indicates Gilmore was a draughtsman (see for example here[2]), so he probaly didn't make the illustrations. Is there any info in the work about the illustrators? A workaround could be that copyright of the book/paper was probably not renewed, which would mean that it has long been PD regardless of who created it. But then again, if the illustrator wasn' credited, anonymous works seem to have slightly different rules:[3] Only PD 95 years from publication date... I'd ask on Commons Copyright before doing anything. FunkMonk (talk) 06:31, 31 August 2015 (UTC)
- Hmm, Gilmore does not mention anyone completing the figures (with the exception of Fig. 1, a life restoration, by Dr. A. Avinoff), so it would likely be an anonymous work license, so they cannot be uploaded as PD for about 25 more years. I'd say we can renominate Apatosaurus again now considering that there won't be any big changes for a while unless more papers are published during the FA review (like last time XD). IJReid discuss 15:35, 31 August 2015 (UTC)
- There is still the possibility that the copyright was not renewed, see for example:[4] But I'm not sure if the anonymity trumps that... Again, I'd ask at the village pump. In any case, doesn't SPOW alone have superior photos you could use? FunkMonk (talk) 15:44, 31 August 2015 (UTC)
- Okay IJReid, before the slit of bronto and apat, did the article still largely cite papers on legitimate Apato species? If it is the case that ajax and louisae were the more studied species then we should note that when we nominate. Also, are the specimens used for studying the growth of Apatosaurus still considered such? 22:47, 31 August 2015 (UTC)
- Well, it mostly relies on sections. The description is based mostly on the A. louisae holotype, history was based on the history of brontosaurus, but since that was part of its history it should be ok, classification is based on the conclusions of tschopp et al., and paleobiology as far as i know is based off of Apatosaurus as well. But one thing to note is that not all specimens were included in tschopp et al, and thus not all specimens can be classified into the current taxonomy. IJReid discuss 20:23, 1 September 2015 (UTC)
- Okay, I'm ready when your ready. LittleJerry (talk) 15:07, 2 September 2015 (UTC)
- Do you know for sure if File:Clash of Titans Saurophaganax and Apatosaurus.jpg and File:Baby Apatosaurus OMNH.jpg are CC? LittleJerry (talk) 12:40, 10 September 2015 (UTC)
- Yes, both are credited to Matt Wedel, and any pictures of the authors fall under the CC license of the blog. IJReid discuss 14:08, 10 September 2015 (UTC)
- Did you correct all the reference problems? LittleJerry (talk) 18:06, 13 September 2015 (UTC)

WikiCup 2015: The results
WikiCup 2015 is now in the books! Congrats to our finalists and winners, and to everyone who took part in this year's competition.
This year's results were an exact replica of last year's competition. For the second year in a row, the 2015 WikiCup champion is Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points). All of his points were earned for an impressive 253 featured pictures and their associated bonus points (5060 and 1695, respectively). His entries constituted scans of currency from all over the world and scans of medallions awarded to participants of the U.S. Space program. Cwmhiraeth (submissions) came in second place; she earned by far the most bonus points (4082), for 4 featured articles, 15 good articles, and 147 DYKs, mostly about in her field of expertise, natural science. Cas Liber (submissions), a finalist every year since 2010, came in third, with 2379 points.
Our newcomer award, presented to the best-performing new competitor in the WikiCup, goes to Rationalobserver (submissions). Everyone should be very proud of the work they accomplished. We will announce our other award winners soon.
A full list of our award winners are:
- Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points) wins the prize for first place and the FP prize for 330 featured pictures in the final round.
- Cwmhiraeth (submissions) wins the prize for second place and the DYK prize for 160 did you knows in the final round (310 in all rounds).
- Cas Liber (submissions) wins the prize for third place and the FA prize for 26 featured articles in all rounds.
- West Virginian (submissions) wins the prize for fourth place
- Calvin999 (submissions) wins a final 8 prize.
- Rationalobserver (submissions) wins a final 8 prize.
- Harrias (submissions) wins a final 8 prize and the FL prize for 11 featured lists.
- Rodw (submissions) wins the most prizes: a final 8 prize, the GA prize for 41 good articles, and the topic prize for a 13-article good topic and an 8-article featured topic, both in round 3.
- ThaddeusB (submissions) wins the news prize for the most news articles in round 3.
We warmly invite all of you to sign up for next year's competition. Discussions and polls concerning potential rules changes are also open, and all are welcome to participate. The WikiCup judges will be back in touch over the coming months, and we hope to see you all in the 2016 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement! Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. WikiCup 2016 is just around the corner...
Hello everyone, and we would like to wish you all a happy holiday season. As you will probably already know, the 2016 WikiCup begins in the new year; there is still time to sign up. There are some changes we'd like to announce before the competition begins.
After two years of serving as WikiCup judge, User:Miyagawa has stepped down as judge. He deserves great thanks and recognition for his dedication and hard work, and for providing necessary transition for a new group of judges in last year's Cup. Joining Christine (User:Figureskatingfan) and Jason (User:Sturmvogel 66) is Andrew (User:Godot13), a very successful WikiCup competitor and expert in Featured Pictures; he won the two previous competitions. This is a strong judging team, and we anticipate lots of enjoyment and good work coming from our 2016 competitors.
We would also like to announce one change in how this year's WikiCup will be run. In the spirit of sportsmanship, Godot13 and Cwmhiraeth have chosen to limit their participation. See here for the announcement and a complete explanation of why. They and the judges feel that it will make for a more exciting, enjoyable, and productive competition.
The discussions/polls concerning the next competition's rules will be closed soon, and rules changes will be made clear on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring and talk pages. The judges are committed to not repeating the confusion that occurred last year and to ensuring that the new rules are both fair and in the best interests of the competition, which is, first and foremost, about improving Wikipedia.
If you have any questions or concerns, the judges can be reached on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, on their talk pages, or by email. We hope you will all join us in trying to make the 2015 WikiCup the most productive and enjoyable yet. You are receiving this message because you are listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. We are about to enter the second week of the 2016 WikiCup. The most recent player to sign up brings the current total to 101 contestants. Signups close on 5 February. If you’re interested, you can join this year's WikiCup here.
We are aware that in some areas the scoring bot’s numbers are a little bit off (i.e., overly generous) and are working to have that corrected as soon as possible.--MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:03, 7 January 2016 (UTC)

WikiCup 2015 March newsletter
That's it, the first round is done, sign-ups are closed and we're into round 2. Forty-seven competitors move into this round (a bit shy of the expected 64), and we are roughly broken into eight groups of six. The top two of each group will go through to round 3, and then the top scoring 16 "wildcards" across all groups.
Twenty-two Good Articles were submitted, including three by Cyclonebiskit (submissions), and two each by MPJ-DK (submissions), Hurricanehink (submissions), 12george1 (submissions), and Cas Liber (submissions). Twenty-one Featured Pictures were claimed, including 17 by Adam Cuerden (submissions) (the Round 1 high scorer). Thirty-one contestants saw their DYKs appear on the main page, with a commanding lead (28) by Cwmhiraeth (submissions). Twenty-nine participants conducted GA reviews with J Milburn (submissions) completing nine.
If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Dear User:IJReid. Your User:IJReid/sandbox/Cladogram request/Archive 1 page was on overflow (template_include_limit). I have moved some items from the archive to the original page, and corrected the parameters of the archiver (archive %%i is required to allow the opening of another archive when the current one if full). Within one day, these past discussions should move to Archive 2. In any case, feel free to revert if you disagree. Pldx1 (talk) 19:47, 11 March 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks Pldx1, I did not know there was an overflow, and appreciate your actions. IJReid discuss 23:58, 11 March 2016 (UTC)
- The new archive, created this night by the archiving process, has been named User:IJReid/sandbox/Cladogram request/Archive %i due to a parameterization error. I have corrected my mistake (see https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User%3AIJReid%2Fsandbox%2FCladogram_request&type=revision&diff=709664991&oldid=709580549) and renamed the archive. Now, "Archive 1" and "Archive 2" are appearing in the archive box of page [[User:IJReid/sandbox/Cladogram request as it should be. Best regards. Pldx1 (talk) 08:36, 12 March 2016 (UTC)

Hi IJReid
I understand that the preferred skin type of T. rex on wikipedia is feathered but the image used shows regions that would have 100% been scaly (legs, tail) due to skin impressions we have found as feathered, because of that the scaly one that I put in is more accurate. If you can change it too a more accurate image you are more than welcomed too TheGamingMaverick (talk) 05:32, 11 April 2016 (UTC)
- There's a couple of problems with those claims, first, a few scaly patches from a general area doesn't show the entire limb would have been scaly. Also, scales and feathers can exist on the same patches of skin[5], so the presence of scales in sediments that don't preserve feathers doesn't necessary mean the absence of feathers. FunkMonk (talk) 05:58, 11 April 2016 (UTC)
- Furthermore, the fact that the legs are the same colour, doesn't mean they are feathered. Tyrannosaurus was not a green lizard :o).--MWAK (talk) 06:41, 11 April 2016 (UTC)

I have undone your cut-and-paste move
Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you tried to give Galveosaurus a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into Galvesaurus. This is known as a "cut-and-paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is legally required for attribution. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.
In most cases, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page (the tab may be hidden in a dropdown menu for you). This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Requests for history merge. Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 20:00, 26 July 2016 (UTC)

WikiProject Good Articles's 2016-2017 GA Cup
Greetings, all! We would like to announce the start of the 4th GA Cup, a competition that seeks to encourage the reviewing of Good article nominations! Thus far, there have been three GA Cups, which were successful in reaching our goals of significantly reducing the traditionally long queue at GAN, so we're doing it again. Currently, there are over 400 nominations listed. We hope that we can again make an impact this time. The 4th GA Cup will begin on November 1, 2016. Four rounds are currently scheduled (which will bring the competition to a close on February 28, 2017), but this may change based on participant numbers. We may take a break in December for the holidays, depending on the results of a poll of our participants taken shortly after the competition begins. The sign-up and submissions process will remain the same, as will the scoring. Sign-ups for the upcoming competition are currently open and will close on November 14, 2016. Everyone is welcome to join; new and old editors, so sign-up now! If you have any questions, take a look at the FAQ page and/or contact one of the judges. Cheers from 3family6, Figureskatingfan, Jaguar, MrWooHoo, and Zwerg Nase. We apologize for the delay in sending out this message until after the competition has started. Thank you to Krishna Chaitanya Velaga for aiding in getting this message out. To subscribe or unsubscribe to future GA Cup newsletters, please add or remove your name to our mailing list. If you are a participant, you will be on the mailing list no matter what as this is the easiest way to communicate between all participants.

ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!
Hello, IJReid. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
If you wish to participate in the 2016 election, please review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 22:08, 21 November 2016 (UTC)
How's it going?
Hi, you haven't been around much lately it seems, but I saw you did some expansion on Segnosaurus. Are you cutting down on editing, or is it only temporary? Feels lonely with fewer dinosaurs at FAC! FunkMonk (talk) 14:53, 20 November 2016 (UTC)
- Yeah, I've had to slow down right now, mostly because of school. It should be temporary, but it may last until about January (excluding Christmas break), when my French course, the one thing that's gonna kill me, ends. I also have several things going outside of the wiki that are relevant (3 phylogenetic analysis papers) that I am spending time working on. I have a skeletal of Segnosaurus in the works actually, [6], with really strange proportions. Once the feet are done then I will upload it here, but of course there are no photos of the feet of Segnosaurus. And still, I keep forgetting about Paranthodon, which is about as inclusive as it can get, and probably ready for FAC. IJReid discuss 16:09, 20 November 2016 (UTC)
- Hehe, I recognise that silhouette! Yeah, the only thing I might wonder about in the Paranthodon article is why the description section isn't first, as in other dinosaur FAs, but it does look ready to go... I'd also move the map to the right, so it doesn't clash with the heading below... Anyhow, getting actual stuff published is pretty commendable, but I hope that and writing here doesn't cancel each other out! Good luck with the French, can't help you there, hehe... I guess that's what you get from living in Canada. FunkMonk (talk) 16:16, 20 November 2016 (UTC)
- Yeah, it's not that I'm bad at French, but its just draining having a class for 2 hours 30 minutes of stuff that is either extremely repetitive or not teaching us anything. I think the Paranthodon sections can be easily rearranged, and I may update the reference formatting too. The publishing stuff is going to take some time anyways, because all three analyses are either huge matrices (our tyrannosaurid juveniles analysis), brand new taxa added (our spinosaurid analysis) or both (our titanosauriformes species-level analysis).
- Wow, how did you start the whole publishing business? By the way, don't know why I didn't ask during the GA review, but are there any images in the Paranthodon description from 1912? If so, they would be PD South Africa... FunkMonk (talk) 16:39, 20 November 2016 (UTC)
- Well, at first I did the little BC dinosaurs thing, which I got pre-printed, but haven't yet gotten it published (its a bit too much of a "review"). Then I met bricksmashtv, the guy that was uploading iffy skeletals, and he mentioned working on a titanosaur phylogeny, based on the Notocolossus matrix. The funny thing was, I had just been playing around for fun with the exact same matrix, and I had several taxa coded that he and Nima hadn't (He and Nima Sassani were already working together on it). He invited me to join the project, and I began doing the coding of taxa, until it got to tedious and things slowed down. Then he invited me to join a Discord with several other paleo-people on Deviantart, and on that chat I found a few people who wanted to do a spinosaurid specimen-level analysis. After that, a person who was in the spinosaurid group had decided to start an analysis on tyrannosauridae including different ages of specimens, to see how Tarbosaurus juveniles placed, to resolve Raptorex. (I will check the broom description of Paranthodon) IJReid discuss 16:44, 20 November 2016 (UTC)

- Not really, but with 3D models, like of the youngest Tarbosaurus, we can come pretty close. (I myself have actually seen in person several dinosaurs, from the ROM, RTMP, and RBCM, bricksmash works at the Arizona Museum, and the starter of the tyrannosaurid paper, Jonas, can visit the museum holding the only dinosaurs from his country, Netherlands, easily) IJReid discuss 17:03, 20 November 2016 (UTC)
- Yeah, Canada being one of the dinosaur capitals of the world compensates for you having to study French, I guess! The rest of us, who live in formerly submerged countries, don't get much to look at... FunkMonk (talk) 17:26, 20 November 2016 (UTC)
- The only problem about being here is just how big Canada is. The distance from where I live to the Royal Tyrrell Museum is probably around the entire width of Denmark, nevermind going from the west coast to Ontario to visit the Royal Ontario Museum! IJReid discuss 17:29, 20 November 2016 (UTC)
- Ah, didn't think of it that way! Might be as easy for me to go to the Naturkunde Museum in Berlin as for you to go to those big museums... FunkMonk (talk) 17:32, 20 November 2016 (UTC)
- Yeah, possibly. But Germany also has the cool fossils, with like the best preservation anywhere. Only feathers I've seen here have been those Ornithomimus ones discovered a few years ago. IJReid discuss 17:40, 20 November 2016 (UTC)
