Hello again from the Help Project! In the last newsletter (which was quite a while ago sorry!) I talked about my fellowship and the plans for improving the main portal page, Help:Contents. Well I'm sad to say that my fellowship is now over, but very happy to say that the proposed improvements to that page have been completed and implemented. Do check it out if you haven't already. Another important and frequently used help page, Wikipedia:Contact us, has also seen a significant revamp. You may recognise the design inspiration from the new tutorial pages. In project news, we now have a subscription to the "article alerts" service. Any deletion nominations, move discussions, or requests for comments on pages within the Help Project's scope will now show up at Wikipedia:Help Project/Article alerts. So that's definitely a page which project members might want to watch. Any comments or suggestions for future issues are welcome at Wikipedia:Help Project/Newsletter. If you don't wish to receive this newsletter on your talk page in future then just edit the participants page and add "no newsletter" next to your name. |

Wikiproject Articles for creation Needs You!

WikiProject AFC is holding a one month long Backlog Elimination Drive!
The goal of this drive is to eliminate the backlog of unreviewed articles. The drive is running from March 1st, 2013 – March 31st, 2013.
Awards will be given out for all reviewers participating in the drive in the form of barnstars at the end of the drive.
There is a backlog of over 2000 articles, so start reviewing articles! Visit the drive's page and help out!

It's been a full year since the Teahouse opened, and as we're reflecting on what's been accomplished, we wanted to celebrate with you.

Last month January was our most active month so far! 78 profiles were created, 46 active hosts answered 263 questions, and 11 new hosts joined the project.

Open Help Conference The Open Help Conference will be taking place June 15-19 in Cincinnati Ohio, USA. The conference includes two days of presentations and open discussions, followed by team "sprints" - collaborative efforts to write and improve documentation. It has been suggested to send a team from Wikipedia/Wikimedia: to share our own knowledge about help, learn from others in the open source community working on similar problems, and to carry out a sprint to improve some aspect of Wikipedia's help. There may be support available for volunteers to attend from the Participation Support program (and your editor is certainly hoping to be there!) Please join the discussion in Meta's IdeaLab if you're interested, and/or have suggestions about what we could work on. |

- The Translate extension and Universal Language Selector were enabled on Wikimedia Commons on May 20. Commons users can now easily change languages, and translate pages with a friendly interface. [6]
- The Notifications feature, active on the English Wikipedia, now supports local blacklists and whitelists. It is possible to hide users (for example certain bots) from all notifications on the wiki. Also, e-mail notifications are now grouped. [7] [8]
- The first stable release of MediaWiki 1.21 for sites outside Wikimedia was published on May 25. [9]
- The tool storing information about languages (CLDR) was updated to the latest version (23.1). [10]
- Due to a software issue, users couldn't enable or disable Gadgets. The issue is now fixed.
- Future software changes
- MediaWiki will stop supporting XHTML 1.0 and HTML versions lower than version 5. HTML5 will now be the default language for pages created by the software. [11] [12]
- The software will check if all uploaded files are secure and match their type. [13]
- The Wikimedia Commons Android app will come out of the beta phase on its next release. [14]
- Account creation by manual log-in will now be recorded in the account creation log (bug 42434). [15]
- Links to file description pages will again be accessible directly from within videos (bug 43747). [16]
- The software behind recent changes patrolling was re-written; the change fixes issues related to patrolling new pages, among other things. [17]
- During a meeting, developers agreed on rules about making big changes to the software. [18]
- There is now a category to list pages with invalid music code. [19]

- The latest version of MediaWiki (1.22/wmf5) was added to non-Wikipedia wikis on May 29. It will be enabled on the English Wikipedia on June 3, and on all other Wikipedias on June 5. [20]
- The Tamil Wikipedia shared a Lua module they created to automate their Main Page. [21]
- There is now a test wiki to test new features in right-to-left languages. [22]
- The Thanks feature was added to the English Wikipedia; users can now thank others for individual edits. [23]
- The new interface for account creation and log-in is now the default on 30 wikis, including the English Wikipedia, Commons, Meta, and Wikidata. The feature will be added to all wikis after June 5. Users can return to the old look by adding ?useNew=0 to the web address. [24]
- Videos are now played in pop-up windows if their size on the page is smaller than 200 pixels (800 pixels on the English Wikipedia). [25]
- Opening your talk page now marks notifications as read, for wikis using the Notifications feature. (bug 47912) [26].
- All autoconfirmed users can now reset transcoding of video files; previously only administrators could do this. [27]
- The Nearby feature allows people who use mobile devices to see Wikipedia articles about objects and places around them. [28]

- The PostEdit feature is now part of MediaWiki, and will work on all wikis. (bug 48726) [29]
- The Narayam and WebFonts extensions will be replaced by the Universal Language Selector extension. [30]
- MediaWiki will now be updated every week, starting on June 6. Thanks to this, bugs will be fixed and features will be added faster than they are now. [31]

- The latest version of MediaWiki (1.22/wmf6) was added to test wikis and MediaWiki.org on June 6, and to non-Wikipedia wikis on June 10. It will be enabled on all Wikipedias on June 13. [32]
- An alpha version of the VisualEditor was enabled on all Wikipedias on June 6. Please test it and report problems. [33]
- Several VisualEditor bugs have been fixed; users can now add, edit and remove categories using the editor's "Page settings" menu.
- Wikimedia error messages will no longer link to the #wikipedia [[<tvar|meta-irc-chans>:m:IRC/Channels</>|IRC channel]] on Freenode. [34]
- The logo of 16 Wikipedias was changed to version 2.0 in a fourth group of updates. [35]
- A test instance of Wikidata is now available at test.wikidata.org. [36]
- Users can now patrol the first version of a newly created page if they visit it from Special:NewPages or Special:RecentChanges. [37]
- Translation pages will no longer include edit section links (bug #40713). [38]
- Future software changes
- A report on mobile upload errors was published, and software changes to reduce their number will come soon. [39]
- A request for comments on updating MediaWiki to use RDFa version 1.1 was started on MediaWiki.org (Gerrit change #67608).
