Oceania
I wonder how many people look up sports events in Oceania by month. Seems to me to be an utterly purposeless set of categories. Oceania is after all largely a technical term not in common usage. Just something to think about. --Falcadore (talk) 07:07, 4 April 2020 (UTC)
Events in Oceania by month go back to 1969, with "sports events" by month in Oceania being a subcategory; from then events and sports events are categorised by continent (but I may extend the subcategories for New Zealand and perhaps Australia further back than 2013). Category:Railway stations in China by opening year
Hey there, I didn't move it along with the rest of the nom because it was added in rather late into the nom (as I explained in the discussion here). BrownHairedGirl has listed it for WP:CFDS here, so we'll defer to that process (48 hour wait, which should mean that it'll be processed today). bibliomaniac15 17:12, 13 May 2020 (UTC) Yes, good idea. Hugo999 (talk) 21:58, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
I'm here to get some help from you because I'm not an engineer and you say you are an (not sure a Telecom version fits) engineer. I'm trying to categorise some images and having problems. Its to do with pumps and treadmills. First, please would you confirm this image shows a type of piston pump. Thanks, Eddaido (talk) 05:40, 7 May 2020 (UTC)
- Well I think so (though I am an electrical engineer); like a Bike pump.
- Well, I'm puzzled.
- In the centre we have a vertical pipe over a pool of water.
- There is a notched piece at the foot of this pipe and I suppose in the water. ????
- The pipe contains a canister (piston?) with a lid and a handle
- a. strings hang from the bottom of the canister
- b. the canister is suspended by a piece of rope from a crank.
Should I see the rope as a solid connecting rod? No. Please would you tell me how this device draws up water. Eddaido (talk) 04:48, 8 May 2020 (UTC)
Well I think the piston (canister) has a non-return valve in it so that water held above the valve is hoisted up when the piston is raised from the lower position. For an ingenious pump see Humphrey pump! Hugo999 (talk) 05:05, 8 May 2020 (UTC)
The Humphrey pump is great. Wouldn't like to live near one though.
OK, "that water held above the valve is hoisted up when the piston is raised from the lower position" and then the water goes where? Eddaido (talk) 05:28, 8 May 2020 (UTC)
Well it flows out at a higher level to "wherever" (it has been raised in level): Hugo999 (talk) 07:42, 8 May 2020 (UTC)
Asking you because I don't think the caption fits. You feel it does even if it doesn't make sense to either of us? Eddaido (talk) 09:55, 8 May 2020 (UTC)
@Hugo999: I take it you'd prefer not to venture an opinion ? Eddaido (talk) 07:26, 16 May 2020 (UTC)
WEll I think the drawing is missing some details; either a trough to channel the raised water from a nozzle at the top of the piston to ??? or a connection to the device to the left of the pump which could be a hose or pipe to take the raised water to ??? Hugo999 (talk) 07:35, 16 May 2020 (UTC)

Railway stations by year of opening categories
Hi Hugo; I see that you are doing a lot of edits diffusing the subcats of Category:Railway stations by year of opening into by-nationality subcats. (see your contribs)
This is all seems to be done well, but I just thought that I should point out that I am doing this by AWB, which is a massively faster and more accurate process, and also has the benefit of applying AWB's WP:GENFIXES. So in the last 24 hours I have done over 5,000 Japanese railway stations. Now as I do the remaining 3,000 pages in the list I made yesterday, I see it is akipping some articles which you have done manually.
So I just wanted to suggest that you might prefer to do edits which actually require human judgement, rather than using your time to do a job which is already being done more efficiently done by other means.
This of course entirely up to you. You aren't doing anything in any way wrong, and this is just a suggestion for how you may want to use your time. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 13:38, 21 May 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for that; good idea. Japan has even more railway stations than China? Russia needes extending back. And subcategories of Category:Railway stations in Korea by year of opening need some examination. Hugo999 (talk) 21:59, 21 May 2020 (UTC) Also Category:Railway stations in the United Kingdom opened in the 2010s?? (merge to GB categories?) Hugo999 (talk) 23:40, 21 May 2020 (UTC)

- Hugo, number of en.wp articles on stations is not the same as number of stations! Japanese stations just happen to be very well-covered on en.wp. About 8,500 articles with a year of opening.
- I have done Russia, tho categories will need some renaming (Russian Empire until 1917)
- I am about to do Germany, which has about 2030 articles.
- Beyond that, I think that diffusion by country+year is probably unwarranted. For example:
- Subcatting them by year will lead to a lot of smallcats, as has happened with Category:Railway stations in Russia by year of opening (total 508 articles) and Category:Railway stations in Canada by year of opening (total 520 articles). I wouldn't have started either of those sets, and although I completed them once they were part-built, I wouldn't oppose them being upmerged.
- IF smaller sets start being subcatted, I will bring them to CFD myself. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 23:54, 21 May 2020 (UTC)
- PS. Category:Railway stations in the United Kingdom opened in the 2010s is wholly redundant, and can simply be deleted. I will bring it to CFD tomorrow. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 23:58, 21 May 2020 (UTC)
- See WP:Categories for discussion/Log/2020 May 22#Category:Railway_stations_in_the_United_Kingdom_opened_in_the_2010s.
- The Category:Railway stations in the United Kingdom opened since 1948 is a different matter, since it also groups staitons by company. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 00:50, 22 May 2020 (UTC)

- PS: and Category:Railway stations in the United Kingdom opened since 1948 too! Re comments above I do not favour splitting Railway stations into heavy rail and light rail categories. Possibly served by the heavy rail article having a redirect from the light rail category (quite a few of the New York subway stations have redirects, though not for the same reason). But the simplest answer would be to make the Category:Sydney Metro stations a "non-diffusing subcategory" of Category:Railway stations in Sydney so that the stations could appear in both categories? PS: I think most of the Chinese metro stations I have seen are heavy rail anyway eg Category:Shanghai Metro stations. "China railway stations by year" is the only category I started (seeing the number of them in some years); not the Canada and Russia categories by year.Hugo999 (talk) 00:20, 22 May 2020 (UTC)
- If that's a response to the discussion on my talk, it would be better posted on my talk to keep the discussion centralised. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 00:51, 22 May 2020 (UTC)
